Yes, but the name depends on what the ship is used for and what it may look like. For example: if I'm flying a Thorax used for ganking and piracy situations, it's pretty clear what to name it based on what it looks like and it's purpose. ______________ Some men aren't looking for anything logical, like money. I always change the name of my ships, whether or not I give them a name like "Santa" (now destroyed hurricane) or "Hurricane 019" depends on if I feel the ship deserves a name. Typically permanent ships have a name while expendable ones have ship type and incarnation number next to it. Sometimes I don't even bother with that and will just delete my name before ship type.

On the PVP front, there's been Polysynchronicity - Only covops I ever bought, been around for over a year without getting popped. Lucky Griffin - I named it this after I flew it from F4R to Amarr through hostile 0.0, without seeing a single hostile.
Most of my PVP ships I name by holding ALT and mashing the numpad until something interesting came out. My favorite so far is ALT-3331. Try it! ----------

Just a shame that EVE only allows so many characters for your ship name, so I can't use other favourites like "What Are The Civilian Applications?" and "Frank Exchange of Views."

Naming a ship the Hood is just asking for it... after all, remember the Hood :)
I named my very first BC "Hood". It died ten minutes later as I jumped into a camp.

Dragonnames from Dragonriders of Pern.
With blue/green/brown/bronze matched to the appropriate ship class, gold is reserved for capitals I'm yet unable to fly.
Though I am now getting the ability to fly other races and thinking of keeping the dragonnames restricted to Gallente.

I have a little system for naming whatever I fly: <Actual ship name> <Character initials>-<Three digit number>/<Two or three letters that indicate its purpose>
So for example, my Bestower (which for me is a "Cargo Vessel") is named: Bestower DT-501/CV
Not at all clever or entertaining, but I like the uniform naming for my ships and I'm never ever lost for a name.

I have several different naming schemes I use.
Sometimes I name them based on the general appearance of the ship, sometimes I give them just a random, cool-sounding name.
Lately though, I've been using song titles and Lyrics for name inspiration. So many songs have really cool sounding titles and lyrics, and I just abscond them for my own. Tactical Logistics using the last T1 Frigate hull!

Edited by: Helena Shun on 02/01/2009 22:45:55 Edited by: Helena Shun on 02/01/2009 22:44:57 I use the following format:
ABC-01D
Where A is the first letter of the ship's race... (or corporation in case of ORE ships) B is the first letter of the class of ship... (In case of collision, use acronyms) C is the first letter of the type of ship... (In case of collision within same class and race, use first few letters). 01 is a fitting indicator used to track fittings... D is a letter incrementing after each ship bought (if required, another letter is appended, representing a base 26 number for ships numbering above 26)...
So, for example, my second moa (Caldari Cruiser) using my fitting labeled 6 would be called CCM-06B
My tenth gallente shuttle (Shuttle craft, shuttle class) would be called [here is a special case since no fitting is applicable, it is using label 00] GSS-00J
My first amarr Abaddon (Battleship) using fitting 1 would be called ABsAb-01A
Not a perfect naming scheme, but it does the job.

I name my ships after discworld characters. I have most of the main characters from Ankh-Morpork already, I might have to get new ships just to be able to use more names.
Rincewind is the name of my badger mk 2 that has warp core stabs to help it run away.
Sergeant Colon, is the dependable but slow, and long employed Raven.
There's more of course, the Drake was named after lord Vetinari, some don't really have a reason, but I like Carrot Ironfounderson for the Hulk and Corp. Littlebottom for the mackinaw.
I rarely have time to do nothing but think about names any more but when I did I took it seriously.

I name mine after British WWII ships.
In PvP, always rename your ship. The Culture ship names is my favorite.
Banks is brilliant with his names.
All my ships' names are sentence fragments from any random song I happen to have in my head at the time.
oh , the culture ship names is the best: "liveware problem" "now we try it my way" "don't try this at home" "you'll clean that up before you leave" "subtle shift in emphasis"
my nyx is named Banzai Butterfly , after a song by the swedish group quit your dayjob. The lyrics go something like this: "die die butterfly , die die butterfly , banzai butterfly....." I am always yelling it in PvP :-D . you'll never jump alone

I name mine after British WWII ships.
Running around in "So and So's Cyclone" is really asking for it. Sometimes fleets will name themselves according to a plan to reduce scan clutter.
If you can't think of something witty, the good old "Asteroid (Veldspar)" will work fine. I've also had a grand time renaming my shuttle "Grendelsbane's Hyperion" and such.

One thing I never understood is why people name there ships USS something. US does not exist in this universe. FSS or GFSS - yes, RSS or MRSS -yes CSS -yes.
The only RL naming convention that can apply in this game is HMS - that is only if yu are flying Amarr.

I name mine whatever comes to mind. Most of the time it's Locus [whatever], after our corp name. Sometimes it's Loser, after our corp ticker. Any time I can't think of a name it just gets changed to "Wash Me"
At the moment I have three mission ships, 'cause I'm on hiatus from FW. They are:
Dominix: Locus Trashmaker Catalyst: Locus Trashgrabber Badger II: Locus Trashhauler
I also had a blaster Brutix named "Tap Tap the Red Nose," ala. Yoshi's Island. My series of Thorax's were "Thornery X" where X is the number of the ship. My favourite ship, a Crane, is "Locus Rum Runner" --- Burukt "The Eh Team" Vri'ra Locus Industries Amarr Militia Got shot down by a Moros, loved every second |

All of my approx. 210 different ships have name and with some many ships it can get hard to stick to a single logic, still I tried.
All my amarrian ships( except for my second hand navy apoc) are named after places near where I grew up. Used to be in the village itself, is up to a 20mile/30km radius by now. Most other ships are named for either a quality they are supposed to have( according to their info) or what they look like. This leads to names like: Trash Can, Ironing Board, Jawa Crawler and I forgot the rest.
Of course there are also people with a (very) twisted sense of humor in this game. In an older 'ship's names' I once read someone had called his hurricane Katrina.

The lyrics go something like this: "die die butterfly , die die butterfly , banzai butterfly....." I am always yelling it in PvP :-D

USS Yorktown was a carrier that was lost in the Battle of Midway, but delivered the dive bombers that sank the last Japanese carrier winning the battle.
USS West Virginia was actually SANK during the bombing of Pearl Harbor but was raised, refitted, and served with distinction during the war.

American, Ozzie, Kiwi and Japanese ships that fought in the Solomon Islands or New Guinea area during WWII. Frigates are named after Destroyers or smaller ships (one is PT124, the only US PT boat to sink a Japanese destroyer single-handed), Cruisers and Battlecruisers are named after Cruisers, and BS's after BS's. Industrials are named after Liberty Ships or Victory Ships.
The only exceptions is a Rapier named The Sweet P, which was the nickname of the USS Portland, and a Sacrilege named the Johnston, which never fought near these places but during the battle of the Leyte Gulf charged a huge Japanese formation including the Yamato, the largest battleship ever. Johnston and it's captain Lt. Cmdr. Ernest Evans didn't survive the battle, but they accomplished delaying and distracting the Japanese fleet allowing their targets - escort carriers who Johnston was escorting - to escape. 141 of the 327 men on the Johnston survived the battle. I have another Sacrilege named the Samuel B. Roberts from the same battle.
