I thought Iceland is a brilliant place because its pretty much right in between europe and USA... if anyone should have their own fanfest it should be Asia/Australia or maybe even the russians.... :P

Being a low brow American, perhaps I misunderstood the OP when he said he did not want to REPLACE the current Fanfest.
Or maybe I am not so oxygen starved I can read the d**n thing unlike those posters on the tall European marble pedestals of self-righteousness, claiming unfairness to have an additional event stateside.

It is not about geographic location, it is about costs. I checked prices yesterday, and it costs 2x more to fly to Iceland than to Atlanta, even though Iceland is much closer (I am in EU).

It wouldn't have the same feel. Its like taking the Olympics out of Greece so they become a political bull**** tool and end up being a huge money sink... oh wait...

Depends on where you'd rather be.
Central europe, france germany ect...
North america...
Id be fine making a holiday out of either to include the fanfest, it would justify the costs involved and id get my holiday thrown in.
No intrests at all visting a freezing rock in the middle of winter spending the same ammounts of money for a few days just to do one thing.
If CCP were proactive as a company they would see that situation, you'll only ever continue to attract the hardcore fans to such an event as it is, not exactly fair to the playerbase who would like the chance to get involved.
Things change, the crux of the old issue was the lack of staffing levels, the chained to the desk, has to be in iceland ect...
Since CCP now tell you there 3-4 times in number now, have things changed on that front?
Why can't a company with millions in terms of revenue each month put on a small/medium event for a few days on a couple of dots on the planet each year.
There are far lesser organisations that do that for there audience, it's not like it wouldn't help with their exposure of eve. A friend of a friend is more likely to head to a fanfest and become involved in the game as a prime example, local press exposure, prior and previous to the event, casual intrests because of that, the general eve message spreads futher because of it.
All those things, keeping it on a frozen rock hidden away to all those but the most committed helps keep eve in the dark ages imho.

A stateside fanfest, even if it is smaller, can only help CCP at this point. Couple that with the fact that it is cheaper for the Euros, the aussies, and the americans to fly to north america that it is to fly to Iceland, then it is a win-win for everyone.
But man, as soon as you throw in "US" anywhere the euros all of a sudden go bananas.
Euro 1: Hey I'm going to get some fresh eggs
Euro 2: Ok can I come with you? I need some fresh eggs.
US 1: Hey I would like to go get some fresh eggs too.
Euro 1&2: OH MY GOD! You stupid, selfish american you want EVERYTHING dont you. You aren't the center of the world! Go away! Us MATURE, peace-loving citizens of a more civilized nation are going to get our eggs and YOU can't have any.
If I had an Alt I would probably post with it... |

Like i said earlier, it's not about the location, it's about the cost/profit scale.
Let's say they throw a smaller scale fanfest in the US(or anywhere):
- the costs of the ticket would have to cover the location and other expenses, like travelling(including food, place to stay etc) for the CCP crew. - The costs for the ticket would exceed the expectations of, say, 75% of the people going there. They WOULD compare it to fanfest. - They would have to have a preliminary poll of interest, people willing to go there etc. - These numbers would have to cover the expenses. - If the numbers don't cover the expenses, the tickets will go higher or the expenses would have to come down. Higher tickets=rabble and less stuff=rabble.
It's all fine and dandy to say "this would be cool", ut you have to remember that CCP is NOT a charity(no matter what the employees say about their salary )

If I had the time and money to spend on something like EVE Fanfest, I'd much, much rather go to any city in Iceland than Atlanta. Atlanta is dreadful. (At least choose an interesting US city like New York or New Orleans.) |

ITT angry Europeans who are against moving Fanfest to the US, even though it would be cheaper for them and their countrymen, purely out of spite.
My favorite bit is the "it's too expensive to fly and house 80 people!" shtick. It's not like they're your college buddies, it's a company that has a $35 million yearly revenue.
I fully endorse Vegas Fanfest for two reasons: it would be cheaper (not just flying there, but cost of staying), and to spite the bitter yurops. ----------

Fanfest at my house tbh.
I have just as much right to want fanfest at my house as any American claiming that fanfest should be moved to the US to suit them better.
I'll even have those little sticks with an onion, cheese and hotdog sausage on and everything.

I am against another Fanfest. There is a hard physical limit on the amount of alcohol that even the liver of a CCP staff member can take and I would fear the worst for their health.

Be happy with the fanfest we get, its on youtube if you arent able to get there. Its something extra ccp do and dont really have to do. If your that against traveling be glad that you have access to the internet and all the information that came from the fanfests for far less cost and effort than those who actualy go to the fanfest.

There are now a number of reasons why Americans are unable to leave the country. My mom visits Canada, for example, but only by car so she avoids being patted down or strip searched. I only found out about some of my student loans not being paid off when I applied for a passport and was declined for having a public default, then had to spend three months tracking down the collection agency holding the loans but not telling me about them (so they could maximize penalty interest). In that case, the amount has to be paid up in full before a passport can be issued, which can take years to do. I know three people who tried to apply for passports but lacked the documentation because the county courthouses with their records were burned down by others to destroy evidence for possible criminal trials, and several others who have already been told by the issuing authorities that their birth certificates and other documentation was not certifiable for passport/visa purposes, and will not even be usable for drivers licenses in the future because they come from rural areas that didn't adopt the same standards other places did for those kinds of documents. One recent finding forbids midwives' certificates from certain areas of Texas from being used for obtaining passports.
And that doesn't even touch things like identical names on the No-Fly List and such. I know two professors who aren't allowed to fly because of that problem, and they are still trying to figure out how to appeal that finding.
Those are the realities of Americans trying to get passports for the first time. Sure, each one only accounts for a small fraction of the population, but those are just the barriers I'm aware of. And I haven't tried to get a passport in ten years.

Well if things keep going as they are now CCP might be forced to relocate and if they pick to move in with their White Wolf offices then I guess the Fanfest will be in Atlanta.

This tbh. There is something to be said about flying halfway around the world to a country you know next to nothing about...to spend a weekend getting drunk with a throng of people who also enjoy your favorite game.
(not to mention I've been saving for years for an international vacation and is probably the only way I'll talk myself into going).

I would go as far as saying that people suggesting having Fanfest in Atlanta never actually been to Atlanta, or haven't set foot outside of the airport. It's nasty down there. If there is an argument against having a Fanfest in US, it's the location. People in their right mind do not voluntarily go to Atlanta!
Now, we could do Florida, and pick places like Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Orlando... or, since it's late 2009, New York City, and let's make it somewhere around upper west side, so i don't have to drive. ---

Therefore... you want CCP employees to leave their Iceland HQ AND their Atlanta offices... to some random location that has no relation to the game... spending alot of money and their time.... destroying their livers... just so you don't have to apply for a passport and pay for a ticket to Iceland (probably one of the coolest places to visit in the world).

We had a fan fest in Los Vegas awhile back and it was fun. CCP seemed to enjoy it and said they would come back some day...so why not somewhere in the USA??
But I do agree Atlanta may not be the best place, how about Panama Beach FL or Phoenix Arizona (has a international airport)?
