I know I know, before you read this. I don't want to replace the Fanfest in Iceland. What I am asking is have another Fanfest or a down scaled Fanfest for the USA players. Most of the USA players can't simply pack and head overseas for the weekend in Iceland. I know about Defcon and the E3 show, but CCP doesn't really get a good chance to talk about the Future and advancements in one of the greatest games I ever played. Why GA, well because White Wolf (which is part of CCP, somehow). If CCP consider this option, I would love to come down and volunteer helping setup a week before Fanfest, and meet some really awesome people that created and support Eve Online. I would like to hear back from CCP and the others on this matter and tell me what you think.

Next Aussies will want a fanfest down there. Fanfests are exhausting for CCP employees, so I think one is enough for them.
Edit: And I've been to the Georgia offices, they aren't that big for a fanfest... they are offices with a backroom with pool tables and other trademark CCP stuff.

There are ton of buildings around Atlanta, GA. to provide space for Fanfest. If CCP only wants to do one Fanfest per year, than each year move to a different part of the world, I am sure everyone would hate that alot. To have a Fanfest for like 2 to 3 days, I am sure wouldn't hurt the employees of CCP, since they have people at the White Wolf offices. It doesn't have to be a full blown Fanfest with all of its parties. Just a meet and greet, with some discussions and meet other players is all.

the costs for flying to iceland are exponentially higher than to north america, or britian for that matter.
stating that cause the devs live in iceland as the excuse is pretty idiotic.

Your post is pretty idiotic.
Taking 80(I think that's how many devs were there this year) devs from Iceland to the US is quite an expense. It's not like CCP is actually making money from it, as is. Having to then spend even more money to have their employees there? Good luck.
Also: Iceland is nice. I think that getting a sense for the environment in which EVE was built is just awesome.

How many convention festivals along the lines of EvE Fanfest take place in the USA? If I were to try to name them all, I'd need more than one post here.
How many convention festivals along the lines of EvE Fanfest take place in Iceland? One: The EvE Fanfest. The only thing that came close here were the giant LAN-parties that were held in various gym halls a few years back. Even our film festivals comprise of just the cinemas suddenly showing European films for a couple of weeks. In this sense, CCP are true pioneers in Iceland.
The EvE Fanfest attracts alot of attention because it's not in the USA. It also attracts tourists to Iceland in a month that's generally anti-tourist, so you'll find others beside the EvE-people that will object to the Fanfest's departure.
At best, you may find a CCP booth + presentation lecture at one of the bigger generic gaming festivals, possibly even this year due to the retail release. Whether it's open to the public (*cough*E3*cough) is another matter entirely. |

So the people at White Wolf don't know how the game works? Who said 80 employee's from Iceland? Is CCP want to promote its product to other parts of the world? Sure there is festivals with a booth from CCP in the US, but its just that a BOOTH. No details, no inter action with people from ccp, just one guy, and a dumb model that never played the game or heard of it. So the employees of White Wolf can't host it?

Well just to be annoying as a counterpoint, I would go to fanfest if I could, but due to my previous employment the US Government wont 'let' me 'potentially defect' so no VISA for me... :(
But I agree I think that fanfest being in iceland is just how it should be. Iceland doesn't have a lot of traffic and Eve being one of it's most successful exports should still hold events in Iceland to attract more people into their businesses simply because I'm sure they all need it.
I had been given orders to Iceland a few years back and from what I hear it's beautiful, until the winter when the wind throws dumpsters at you or something to that effect.... though I never got to go, they shut down the Naval Detachment in Keflavik.... :(

White wolf are developing the World Of Darkness MMO, but as evidenced in the Alliance Logo Submission System Dev Blog. The Artists in Atlanta do touch up work at least on that aspect of eve, so I figure they probably do other Art Department things, I would guess they are probably working on all of the things involved in Ambulation or just spending their time on the WoD MMO.

Thank you. But the Fanfest doesn't have to be a big party like the one in Iceland. Just a gathering of people to talk about the future of Eve and upcoming new patch.

If CCP has to move out of Iceland, as per the recent dev blog, then it would be hard to imagine them not at least considering Atlanta already.
They already have a cooperative business arrangement with White Wolf, and North Georgia is packed with places where Fanfest could easily be held, such as the Georgia Mountain Center an hour northeast of ATL. ---------------------------------

No dev-blog EVER suggested they were going to move out of Iceland .
There was a news article on a website where they quoted Dr. EyjoG saying that they might be forced to move the company out of Iceland due to the investment regulations that the Icelandic Government put up. But those are largely removed now, likely as a result of that very article. Just because they move the company doesn't mean they move where they live.

First even if CCP did have to move as the article stated it would likely be a paper move to change the economic headquarters. As such this would have little to no effect on the actual staff.
Now as for a NA EVE Fest, if I recall was not one held in Vegas not that long ago? I would also like to see a North American fest and if one could be done that would be super. However I have always held that Chicago or St. Louis made more sense as they are centrally located and very easy for anyone to reach.

Eve is not UK, nor a US, or a Pacific Ocean (sorry, that includes Japan, Aussies (to early in the morning to spell right now), China and other parts of the East. Its a Global Game. If I wanted to get my product out, I would go to different parts of the world to bring in the fans and keep them hooked (or addicted like crack). Why can't there be a Mini Fanfest be in USA, Pacific, and the mother of all Fanfest in the heart of Iceland. I am sure there are offices that CCP has somewhere in the Pacific as well. Only a few employees of CCP from Iceland could go. The likelyhood of me getting to get a password, have off for 5 days of work, fly halfway across the world, in an unknown area, in the bitter cold, not knowning a sole person, for only 3 days. Never will happen for me.

It's either "cater a mini-fest in all parts of the world", or "cater a fanfest in one part of the world".
The latter costs less, as costs for these kinds of things are quite large.
You're saying "not gonna pay to get there, it's inconveniencing", yet you expect CCP to pay to get to you with no regard to their inconvenience...well...bit hypocritical i reckon.

Why not? Millions of people do it every day from every country in the world (including US), I don't see the issue ? Also, having the fanfest in Iceland proves how global the game is, when you go there, you meet people from every nook and cranny of the world, all brought together by a hobby they like :) It's part of the charm.

Can. But again, costs, setting up, etc.
You see, you might say "we only want a lil shindig", but if it's only "a lil shindig", people won't pay for the ticket which costs are directly related to the price of the EVEnt.
And then people would complain about the "lil" of the shindig, not go at all, EVE would get bad press, CCP would lose money, next years fanfest would compensate this by being "less" etc.
Would you pay 40 bucks to hear Wrangler talk in a boardroom about stuff? No, you'd expect more stuff.
It basically comes down to the age old; can, but is it worth it?
They CAN arrange it, but is it worth it? I CAN stick my ***** into a blender, but is it worth it?(just to get the sexual innuendo clear)

Nah but seriously, being honest here TC, just because it's expensive from you and you're from America doesn't make you special, in any way or form to get a mini-fanfest over there. Others can make it from more expensive places. Some can't. I couldn't this year, There's always next year.
But, if you do want a meeting, there is a section of the forum to organise get-togethers from local areas etc.

Let's face the hard truth, US isn't the centre of the world.
It would be much more difficult to make a Fanfest in US than somewhere else in the world.
Maybe American people doesn't know, but the visa and the other stuff your government wants is pretty much and ridiculous imho.
If we ever will see a Fanfest in another country than Iceland, it will be most certainly somewhere else than in USA.

Not the center of the world, but last report I read about player base put US players as the largest single group. I believe we single handedly make up over half of all subscriptions. So yes, having a US fanfest would be nice. No I don't think Iceland just before winter was the best choice either. If not the US, then mainland Europe works too.

Who said it was, get over yourself. The number of U.S players at the very least warrants a suggestion/recomendation for the possibility of a CCP sponsered event even if it isnt the full blown fanfest.

All other arguments aside, I am a family guy with two kids, a mortgage, car payments, a job that doesn't pay nearly enough, and a wife that won't let me move the family somewhere I can get a better paying job. (Job market in WNY sucks, BTW) I'm not alone in that situation among EVE players in the USA. Here's how it breaks down for me:
Fanfest in Iceland: Cool! Way too damned expensive for me to ever consider going.
Fanfest in Atlanta: Less Cool, but affordable and possible for me. I would go and also bring the wife.
And really, that's all that matters to me. Nothing against anyone else, but my family, time, and wallet are my primary concerns. I would recommend considering a Fenfest in Atlanta, if only because they will make more money off of the Americans whom they would otherwise not have access to.

Well tbh, it would be costly for CCP (Well more expensive than Iceland) to hold Fanfest in the US. I mean, they'd have to pay more for hosting it, getting everything there, etc. Its more tiring also for CCP, cos they'd be hung over after the last day, then they'd have to pack up, get it all back to Iceland, survive a 7-8hrs flight with a cracking hang over.. Iceland is just the easiest option and it wont ever be held anywhere else. ---------------------------

Why not do the old school thing and host a BYOC EVE LAN Party? Fund it by some sponsors (Nvidia loves lan parties), and a small entry fee, say..$20.
I went to a ton of LAN parties back in the day, not quite the same thing as Fanfest is, but damn is it fun to fly withOUT headphones and vent.

What is ignorant on his request (I find those stereotypical anti-ami comments much more ignorant, but maybe that is just me)? He lives in USA so he wants Fanfest in USA, everyone would like to have it closer... even for me (I live in EU) it would be much cheaper to fly to Atlanta than to Iceland, so I would actually vote for Fanfest in Atlanta. UK would be even better.

How about if some enterprising US players come together and make a budget that includes:
A. Location B. Cost of 5 to 10 Iceland -> location tickets C. Hotel costs + massive beer bill for the 5 - 10 Icelanders D. Promotion costs E. Staff costs F. Expected Sponsor income (Nvidia, that company that builds cases with EVE decals, etc) G. Everything else that comes with organizing these things.
Determine what the entrance fee must be, hold a little poll under US players to estimate attendence and if viable, pitch the idea to CCP.
I'd volunteer, but than the fanfest would end up in Amsterdam as the most convenient location for me.

While I can see Jone's point about the 'little shindig' but I think it could still be pulled off and done well without bad press.
My main point is why not have a smaller convention in different locations each year? Set one up in the US one year, Australia the next... you get the point.
Another thing previously ignored is that with larger population centers comes a larger base of local participants potentially willing to help out. Offer a free t-shirt or even some trivial in game item and I'm sure people would be willing to volunteer. Hell, you could even just let them try the new stuff first. There has to be at least one eve playing liquor store owner near Atlanta.
And yes, people will complain. I can already hear the "Well last year the Americans got [insert cool feature], this is all we Aussies get?!?" But really, would it matter? People will complain no matter what happens. It's what they do. With a large enough base of people someone would still complain if you gave out free money.
Lastly, a question: Does anyone know if the Fanfest in Iceland a profitable endeavor?

Maybe American people doesn't know, but the visa and the other stuff your government wants is pretty much and ridiculous imho.
If we ever will see a Fanfest in another country than Iceland, it will be most certainly somewhere else than in USA.
You're definately right... it should be in Canada. Considering our expansive reputation for being a funnel for terrorists (according to some folks south of us), we're the perfect place to host a bunch of Icelandic peeps who the UK have labelled as such already.

Like I said earlier, I would take off a week from work, just to go down to Atlanta, volunteer to setup the convention. Hell, I will be more than happy to throw in Thousand dollars on beer if that is the big fuss about. It doesn't have to be like a large Fanfest like the one in Iceland with all the parties, major label band. Just a bunch of people coming down to meet each other and talk about their experiences, 3 or 4 people coming down from CCP to talk about the up coming features and talk about the latest and greatest.

First, a larger fanbase is found north america than the rest of the world. Second, the costs are indeed much higher to fly to and from iceland , rather than england, or north america. Third, fly all 80 devs? booo hooo, drop a little cash for increased publicity and more cash generation. Nothing I said was " idiotic" but your responce is typical of the "Look at me, I am a CSM" crowd.

Fanfest being in Iceland makes it very expensive to go to. But on the other hand, it makes it very special. Now from my location, yes it is the US, it is 200 to 300 dollars cheaper for me to fly to the UK than Iceland. That is a lot of money (beer). I highly suspect that most other people will find that it is cheaper to fly to the UK than Iceland. The UK is a good choice for Fanfest as it is still close enough to Iceland that the CCP crew can come over without it being too prohibitively expensive.
Now would I like to see a Fanfest situation in the US? Yes. Would I like to see one in Atlanta? Yes. Now would I REALLY like to see one in nice sunny Florida? Hell yes. I mean come on CCP, wouldn't you LOVE to hit the beaches after being up in the cold? Nice booze, nice weather, nice girls.
We all want to see Fanfest come closer to our houses. We are all a bit lazy and we all want to save money on travel. But honestly, while Fanfest could be done in many places in order to make it chaper for the players to attend, there is only one place that has that special something that makes Fanfest different from any other event. That place is Iceland.
Now I do think that people should try and hold Eve related events on a more local area. Hit up some people to get sponsorship, get a place, get a keg or 3, and spread the word. Now if we can convince some of the CCP crew to come down to that event, it gets even better. I am sure the prospect of beer could bring SOME people to the event no?

(Job market in WNY sucks, BTW) I'm not alone in that situation among EVE players in the USA. Here's how it breaks down for me:
Fanfest in Iceland: Cool! Way too damned expensive for me to ever consider going.
Fanfest in Atlanta: Less Cool, but affordable and possible for me. I would go and also bring the wife.
And really, that's all that matters to me. Nothing against anyone else, but my family, time, and wallet are my primary concerns.
I would recommend considering a Fanfest in Atlanta, if only because CCP will make more money off of the Americans whom they would otherwise not have access to.
My 2 ISK.
Sorry man but it's not all about you. Why would u punish ppl who are single, can afford it, and don't mind traveling (like myself). Atlanta isn't exactly an Eve setting (hot, southern, sunny, city). Iceland is cold, dark, and rural and that is the perfect place for an Eve fanfest. I also live in the US and I wouldn't mind taking a flight to Iceland. Also it's easier on the devs and the devs are the rulers of you all.

It is not about geographic location, it is about costs. I checked prices yesterday, and it costs 2x more to fly to Iceland than to Atlanta, even though Iceland is much closer (I am in EU).

Depends on where you'd rather be.
Central europe, france germany ect...
North america...
Id be fine making a holiday out of either to include the fanfest, it would justify the costs involved and id get my holiday thrown in.
No intrests at all visting a freezing rock in the middle of winter spending the same ammounts of money for a few days just to do one thing.
If CCP were proactive as a company they would see that situation, you'll only ever continue to attract the hardcore fans to such an event as it is, not exactly fair to the playerbase who would like the chance to get involved.
Things change, the crux of the old issue was the lack of staffing levels, the chained to the desk, has to be in iceland ect...
Since CCP now tell you there 3-4 times in number now, have things changed on that front?
Why can't a company with millions in terms of revenue each month put on a small/medium event for a few days on a couple of dots on the planet each year.
There are far lesser organisations that do that for there audience, it's not like it wouldn't help with their exposure of eve. A friend of a friend is more likely to head to a fanfest and become involved in the game as a prime example, local press exposure, prior and previous to the event, casual intrests because of that, the general eve message spreads futher because of it.
All those things, keeping it on a frozen rock hidden away to all those but the most committed helps keep eve in the dark ages imho.

A stateside fanfest, even if it is smaller, can only help CCP at this point. Couple that with the fact that it is cheaper for the Euros, the aussies, and the americans to fly to north america that it is to fly to Iceland, then it is a win-win for everyone.
But man, as soon as you throw in "US" anywhere the euros all of a sudden go bananas.
Euro 1: Hey I'm going to get some fresh eggs
Euro 2: Ok can I come with you? I need some fresh eggs.
US 1: Hey I would like to go get some fresh eggs too.
Euro 1&2: OH MY GOD! You stupid, selfish american you want EVERYTHING dont you. You aren't the center of the world! Go away! Us MATURE, peace-loving citizens of a more civilized nation are going to get our eggs and YOU can't have any.

Like i said earlier, it's not about the location, it's about the cost/profit scale.
Let's say they throw a smaller scale fanfest in the US(or anywhere):
- the costs of the ticket would have to cover the location and other expenses, like travelling(including food, place to stay etc) for the CCP crew. - The costs for the ticket would exceed the expectations of, say, 75% of the people going there. They WOULD compare it to fanfest. - They would have to have a preliminary poll of interest, people willing to go there etc. - These numbers would have to cover the expenses. - If the numbers don't cover the expenses, the tickets will go higher or the expenses would have to come down. Higher tickets=rabble and less stuff=rabble.
It's all fine and dandy to say "this would be cool", ut you have to remember that CCP is NOT a charity(no matter what the employees say about their salary )

ITT angry Europeans who are against moving Fanfest to the US, even though it would be cheaper for them and their countrymen, purely out of spite.
My favorite bit is the "it's too expensive to fly and house 80 people!" shtick. It's not like they're your college buddies, it's a company that has a $35 million yearly revenue.
I fully endorse Vegas Fanfest for two reasons: it would be cheaper (not just flying there, but cost of staying), and to spite the bitter yurops. ----------

There are now a number of reasons why Americans are unable to leave the country. My mom visits Canada, for example, but only by car so she avoids being patted down or strip searched. I only found out about some of my student loans not being paid off when I applied for a passport and was declined for having a public default, then had to spend three months tracking down the collection agency holding the loans but not telling me about them (so they could maximize penalty interest). In that case, the amount has to be paid up in full before a passport can be issued, which can take years to do. I know three people who tried to apply for passports but lacked the documentation because the county courthouses with their records were burned down by others to destroy evidence for possible criminal trials, and several others who have already been told by the issuing authorities that their birth certificates and other documentation was not certifiable for passport/visa purposes, and will not even be usable for drivers licenses in the future because they come from rural areas that didn't adopt the same standards other places did for those kinds of documents. One recent finding forbids midwives' certificates from certain areas of Texas from being used for obtaining passports.
And that doesn't even touch things like identical names on the No-Fly List and such. I know two professors who aren't allowed to fly because of that problem, and they are still trying to figure out how to appeal that finding.
Those are the realities of Americans trying to get passports for the first time. Sure, each one only accounts for a small fraction of the population, but those are just the barriers I'm aware of. And I haven't tried to get a passport in ten years.

I would go as far as saying that people suggesting having Fanfest in Atlanta never actually been to Atlanta, or haven't set foot outside of the airport. It's nasty down there. If there is an argument against having a Fanfest in US, it's the location. People in their right mind do not voluntarily go to Atlanta!
Now, we could do Florida, and pick places like Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Orlando... or, since it's late 2009, New York City, and let's make it somewhere around upper west side, so i don't have to drive. ---
