i haven't actually picked up a book to read in years, can anyone suggest any good books?
I like anything except horror, im particulally keen on kings and castles, historic or medevil stuff - tales of heroes etc
but anyhing will do!

If you're into the fantasy genre, I would reccomend the Belgariad and Mallorean series, they're both five book parts to each series, in that order too.

Riftwars are good books and you can always grab the eve book. Only 1/3 of the way through but good so far (aside from the fat Amarrs fetish with toungs...)

Kings and castles... check out A Game of Thrones by George R R Martin. It's probably right up your street.

if your looking for some fantasy the wheel of time and the sword of truth series are pretty good, and for scifi the halo books are surprisingly fun to read |

George R R Martin: A Game Of Thrones.
Order this right now. When you get it, start reading and don't so anything else until you're done.
Then rejoice because there are 4 more books, and another on the way. |

They Myst series of books (Book of Atraus, Book of Ti'tana, Book of D'ni) All of these are actually in one thick book now.

Inferno, Purgatorio and Paradiso by Dante Alleghieri are pretty sweet..old, but sweet.
It's all written in verse, which is impressive, and you can pick up an illustrated version of it in Barnes and Noble for about twenty bucks.
The story itself is pretty imaginative, and I liked it. I am probably odd in the fackt that I didn't have to read it, it was just something for fun

'Shantaram' by Gregory David Roberts. He wrote it in jail, but had to write it again not once but twice because prison officers kept finding the drafts and destroying them. It's a masterpiece pure and simple.

books by Terry Pratchett are good if you like something with a bit of humour.
if fantasy tales are you liking (e.g: sword fighting, heroic tales etc etc) then books by David Gemmel or Simon Scarrow are a good bet.
if you like drama then Clive Cussler or Tom Clancy.

A great fantasy book would be the Princess Bride. Kings, castles, true love, sword fights, high adventure, it's got it all.

Except he forgot to include a freaking story in it  .
You said you wanted fantasy, but I'm not sure how this would fit in. I recommend Stephen King's Dark Tower series, 7 books in all. Without giving too much away, it involves a gunslinger, this world's version of a knight, in search of the mysterious Dark Tower. If you have read his other works, this pretty much ties a lot of them together. |

I haven't gone into fantasy much but a really good book I have found is Maximum Ride.
More sci-fi (not very heavy sci-fi liek star wars) than fantasy but is still a very fun read. |

The Redwall Series are fun to read, just skip all the song and dance and you'll be okay. I still consider the Chronicles of Narnia and Book of the Swords some of my more favorite series.
While were on the subject, I was looking for a series that was only 2 books long 4 years ago, but has probably been extended. It was set in a fantasy setting and revolved around a few people (a soldier, a tracker, a priest, and a few others) who has a history in their families of near-superhuman senses and abilities (the tracker has the ability to smell death or a bringer of death, for example). It involved an end-of-the-world prophecy that revolved around a horn (that is eventually blown, summoning a giant
Nevermind, the book I read was The Briar King and 1 other, but I found it! The Kingdoms of Thorn and Bone, I've read the first two books, and it seems to be a 4 part series.

Lord of the rings, much better than the movie. You could also read Ivanhoe, but I read it long time ago so I don't remember whether I liked it or not lol. |

Probability Moon is definitely a good read. So is The Green Mile If you haven't already picked up The Kite Runner you definitely should. If you're into magic, the Harry Potter series I guess... And Procyon's Promise I think was the name...wasn't bad.
Edit: And if you're into romance, anything by Nicholas Sparks is good. |

It spans 11 books (currently) with the 12th (and final) book to be released by the end of this year. Most fans are agreed that the first 6 books are the best, then Jordan seemed to get too caught up in his own world and characters. Books 7-9 are considered awful by some, mediocre by most. Book 10 is thought by almost all fans to be the worst of the bunch but 11 picks up the pace.
Sadly Robert Jordan died while writing extensive notes for book 12, which he meant to be the last in the series. Jordan's wife, Harriet (I think), asked another author, Brandon Sanderson, to complete the 12th book based on Robert's notes. According to Sanderson's website he's almost finished the first draft and the book should be published by the end of this year.
If you're looking for a long and complex series then you'll enjoy WoT. But if you lack patience then you really shouldn't bother.

If you are not a far right theist and think you can enjoy an alternate version of the the spit between heaven and hell, then check out To Reign in Hell. This book is a quick read and it is worth every minute.
"It deals with the revolt of angels in Heaven from a point of view that is primarily slanted towards humanising Satan."
The above author, Stephen Brust, is most well known for his Vlad Taltos series. This series was published in non-chronological order. So that makes a re-read very interesting. I suggest if you hit these read in publishing order and if finish the series and really like it then sometime in the future reread them in chronological order.
If you like music then This is your brain on music is a insitful read.
If you want some heavy reading Guns, Germ, and Steel: The Fate of Human Societies is real interesting.
As mentioned above I enjoyed the Wheel of Time series through the fith book. I have been on a brake from that for a few years, but I will finish the series at some point.

Tales of heroes? Well, I'm going through some classics, in audiobook guise.
Absolutely brilliant books so far are "The 39 Steps" and "Treasure Island".
Both have kinda heroic people in them. |
