...as long as you go figure why a bunch of parents/societies/schools/governments will not consider what their part in it might have been.

Mr Bilko, we are not just gamers you know!
Some of us are students, doctors, lawyers, civil servants, pensioners, war veterans (even WWII veterans I wish!), journalists, phychologists and the list I'm sure goes on to almost as many ********s are sitting on a chair playing this game...
Please take in consideration that a bunch of gamers are not always those 15 year-olds whose whole universe or excitement revolves round a game they play!
(I sincerely apologize for maneuvering myself round the swearing-filter, but I hope you do see that I wrote that word in a playfull way. Also, please take in consideration that 15 is only a number that came to me at the time I wrote it and that I don't have that opinion for every 15 year-old around. Intelligence after all does not go hand in hand with age...)
As for the matter discussed I blame the education system which is provided both by the government and the church together. I will not analyse this because political or religious postings are not allowed by CCP on these forums. But consider where I lay the blame as food for thought...

Quote: DonĘt you find it a bit odd that people want to ban a video game (which does have a rating on it in case you donĘt know), or band (also rated) every time a violent crime is committed by a child, yet we seem to be ok with watching dead bodies burn on the news channels? We get to watch an actual war, in real-time, but god forbid we be allowed to murder a bunch of made up people. Try taking that crap off the air and watch the "free-speech" crap pour in.
The issue is not simply that we are seeing images of bodies being burned to death and mutilated on TV (which actually in the western world we ARENT, most of the stuff is highly censored). The issue is that we live in a society in which state sponsered mass murder deemed ok, and the corporate media will invariably apologise for state violence. Simply censoring images does not change the fact that thousands are being murdered and maimed by our governments.
Therefore it is not the media who is to blame for showing this real life ultra-violence, but the state/society, which is RESPONSIBLE for those actions in the first place.
This is why it is so odd, when such a society condemns individual acts of violence (understandably) such as this kid murdering his friend, yet fails to condemn the state murder of thousands.
Such a society is fundementally flawed, and using games, or other media as a scapegoat for individual acts of violence will not change that.

Why cant the game maker be held responsible or at least partly? All you have to do is look at some of the hatemail people send in eve to see how much the game has influenced them. Game makers need to stop worrying about how much money they can make and start worrying about how there games influence people. Just sticking a mature rating on a game and thinking all will be okay doesnt cut it. People say society is to blame, well is the gaming industry not part of society? Are the people who work in the gaming industry not a part of society? Some people say the killer was not of sound mind to begin with, well what about the mind set of a group of people who decided to develop a game where the sole purpose is to go around killing people?
Games have a lot of influence on the people who play them. Game makers know this and that is why they should shoulder some of the responsibility.

serg, that is completely stupid. It's ALWAYS the person's fault. If I don't go out and kill someone after playing a game, why should anyone else?
Makes no sense to make that connection. -----------------------------------

Edited by: Dolemite2K on 31/07/2004 19:01:07 I while back I was at a friends house drinking and we played a bit of Ninja Gaiden on my way home i tryed to run on a wall like i did in the game and fell on my ass and spraind my ankle. I think the fact that i was drunk played a bigger factor then the game but hey maybe i should sue the developers anyway
99.9% of people who play games knows that it's just that a GAME and if for some reson a person goes out and tryes to copy what he sees/does in the game then it's something wrong with that person. Manhunt has a 18+ rating the dude was 17 hmmm maybe,.. bear with me here, it could be the PARENTS?. It takes more then a game to **** a person up and if you simply blame the game the you are totaly missing the point. Crazy people won't be less crazy without this game ----------------------------------------------- Life is like a long poo that you have to take a bite of every day |

Ok lets take a case study here, who here has watched these cartoons before?
1 : The premise is simple, a Cat tries in vain to catch the Mouse while the Mouse tries his best to injure the Cat with EVERY object available or at least the Cat finds his own way to injure himself in the chase.
2 : Premise two, a Coyote tries in vain to catch the Roadrunner while the Roadrunner tries his best to injure the Coyote with EVERY object available or at least the Coyote finds his own way to injure himself in the chase.
Now at what point did any parent stop and say that the idea of these was violent? And for that matter if any parent had insisted his/her child had harmed an animal because of either cartoon they'd have been laughed at. Why have things changed since then? Society is full of people with their hands out!
Violence has been with us all along but only in the Modern day, in the world of Lawsuits and welfare scams, have people begun to assign blame to the media. Why? Like i said Society is more so now than at any other time full of people with their hands out screaming 'I WANT...I WANT' and not 'I DESERVE...I DESERVE'...
Violence hasn't changed, but Society has....
Sad....Sad but true

A statement said: "Rockstar Games is a leading publisher of interactive entertainment geared towards mature audiences and markets its games responsibly, targeting advertising and marketing only to adult consumers aged 18 and older."
The firm said all its games were passed to the BBFC for classification.
The Entertainment and Leisure Software Publishers' Association, the video game industry body, said: "We sympathise enormously with the family and parents of Stefan Pakeerah.
"However, we reject any suggestion or association between the tragic events and the sale of the video game Manhunt."

so heres my 2 cents...
if banning things works so well, lets just ban crime! "well i was going to take your money and kill you, but apparently thats illegal now...thank god the government made that law!" of course this sounds silly . it is.

Sick game with no redeeming values.
Sick act by a kid who should have never had access to that sick game.
Dumb arse parents of the sick kid who didn't take that sick game away from him.
I feel sorry for both families who are caught up in this mess.

That last "game idea" was over the line for what is acceptable for this forum. It has been deleted and if I see anything similar the poster will be given a nice vacation from posting here.

Manhunt is also the most violent game ever made. But it is also a horrifying psychological expirience, the concept of murdering human beings in cold blood all in the name of light entertainment is an unpleasant concept that you aren't supposed to 'enjoy' in the normal sense.
