I love FPS and have played most popular ones over the years, Halo hmmmmm..... those cutesy little midget cartoonish monsters with the pathetic whimpers and skrieks just killed the game for me, I ended up hating it.

...DOOM 3 multiplayer pits up to 4 battle-hardened marines against one another...
WTF?!?
I didn't realize that they were going to limit it so much. wow

Originally by: Frost88 The reason Microsoft bought up Bungie and made Halo for Xbox was because it worked! And irrespective of controller Halo is the best quite simply. It looks ok at best sure, but it plays like a dream, it has the best AI, a freaking fantastic physics engine, proper working vehicles including a bloody great hang glider thing. A brilliant level design (except the library, not sure what happened there), and the sound! Oh man I loved Halo's sound, 3000 confirmed voice samples and quite possibly the best music in any game ever, except possibly the theme tune from Metal Arms...
Keep in mind, HALO was a completely different beast when Microsoft bought up Bungie and put em to work. It was looking more like a hybrid RTS/FPS (in 3rd person mode) than a standard FPS. I remember watching a EARLY development video with dev commentary, and one of the quotes was "Remember when HALO used to be cool?"
HALO is a good game, no question. But it was obviously rushed, and nowhere near as good as what Bungie was capable of. Level design stopped halfway through the game, and the rest was just a repeat of what came before. (again, they were really rushed) Physics didn't strike me as being anything special, nor were the vehicles. (the warthog handled WIERD) The best part of the Game was the AI. (if you played on legendary, which made all the difference in the world)
If you want to get an idea of the gameplay Bungie is capable of, play the marathon series. Quality stuff there dispite it's age.
I think Halo 2 will be Bungie's redemption. They know what Halo could have been, and now that they've been given the time to do it right, the sequel will deliver in ways Halo never came close.
Back on topic, I've had Doom3 for a few days now, and despite the ANNOYING random hard-locks, it's been a very enjoyable game. It's got more plot than you'd expect from a Doom game. (not saying much) It also does an excellent job setting the atmosphere, and making each encounter memorable. The game constantly keeps you off balance and uncomfortable. You never have as much health and ammo as you'd like, and you never have the room to maneuver you want. It's dark and claustrophobic. The encounters catch you off guard, and are very close quarters. If you remember the first run-in with the Skarrj in Unreal (in the tunnel) you know what Doom is like ALL the time.
Oh, and the fact that you have to put down your weapon to use the flashlight is pure evel genius. You have a choice. The ability to see, or the ability to shoot. Pick one.
EDIT: The multi-player maps are well suited to the dark, claustrophobic gameplay of the SP game. You just couldn't have 20 people running around those maps and have it be at all enjoyable.

Blah Halo and Farcry the best FPS games? That's highly debatable. Don't forget Half-Life and the only thing that could possibly beat Half-Life is Half LIfe 2. Developers are still trying to match or surpass the singleplayer bar set by HL 6 years ago. Even after playing Doom 3 for over 5 hours, I agree it is a great game but Half-Life 2 will be even greater. Lets not even mention the fact that the beginning of Doom 3 was a total rip from Half-life. Check it out.
Certainly Farcry is a good game but it falls into the category of an "in between filler" game. I beat it at the hardest setting and I already forgot about it. Nothing truly memorable except when you first play and go "wow that's pretty," and the better AI then you get over it.
Halo was a good game too, but it is so overhyped because the platform jocks don't have too much to brag about as far as FPS goes so they hold on to it like it was the second comming of the messiah.
I know I won't be talking about Halo and Farcry 10 years from now. They will only serve as mere anectodes in the pillars of gaming, only to be shadowed by the likes of Doom3, HL2 and possibly STALKER as the most important releases in the beginning of this decade.

Ofcourse, this is my opinion
"The human species suffers from a dimensional limitation. They are not able to understand that matter and mind are just one aspect of something more fundamental. We must strive to expand our perspective so we can see what our true reality is." Deep toughts by Mr.Pops, while consuming large quantities of Blue Pill and staring at the EVE gate in Genesis.

I'm getting a bit angry ehre....
People are trying to force their own personal favorites onto other people. The reason i mentioned those other fps (and i forgot to include Sin, go figure) is that there are many great games that are very comparable in quality to Halo and Doom 3.
The only real difference between them is how you perceive them. Giants is one hell of a good game if you like the abstract humor and setting of it, and also the really neat ideas in the gameplay. Same with MDK.
Far Cry is a classic Dr Moreau kind of story with absolute gorgeous graphics. It isn't innovating on itself, but it has a good solid base.
Doom 3 is the scariest game since AVP, which is also still a very good game. The graphics are top-notch, the mood is super, the gameplay is back to basics, which is a good sign when seeing the lot of "innovative and groundbraking new games".
Halo is more generic, but what it offers is good. It's rock solid goo fps fun, on either pc or xbox. Nothing more can be said really....
Half-life is an fps with a story. It also offers the illusion of freedom of movement, which ahs been implemented VERY well. It's full of surprises and twists and turns in both gameplay and story.
Unreal 1 and 2 are the game you play for the scenery and atmosphere. Who can't remember the first time you leave Vortex Rikers in Unreal 1? Harobed village? And in Unreal 2, the second sanctuary mission (the rainforest), and the drakk homeworld?
Tron 2.0, with it's truly unique graphic style and gameplay?
Max Payne, with a mood of "film noir" which sucks you in the game like no other one does?
And that's only shooters. There's literally thousands of games out there which all deserve to be played. No one can really look at a game objectively, and most people who poisted in this thread refuse to look further than the length of their nose, which is a real shame.
Just a partly off-topic rant....
