I have Doom 3 and it is friggin awesome. If you have the hardware to run, buy this game now.
Also, make sure you have 5.1 capable soundcard and some Zalman 5.1 headphones (Or full 5.1 speaker setup). I invested in the Zalmans and its reaaalllly worth it. This game is scary as hell, and the level of immersion and atmosphere is unparrelled. Half-Life can suck it, Doom 3 is the new Gold Standard for Single Player gaming.

I just bought Doom 3 on your recommendation, Sochin, so if it sucks I'm billing you.
P.S: august 13th release date in the UK. If you pre-order with Game you get a free Doom 3 t-shirt!

I gotta disagree
I found Doom 3:
- repititive - boringly dark - the same old type of gameplay
Overall, I've played a few levels into it, quite a few hours, and I've now quit. It sucks
On a good note, the sounds are absolutely spectacular, and the graphics/shadows/lighting too. But I just find the game play/storyline lacking and uninteresting.
I really really really hope Half Life 2 will be better.

If you want to be scared play Project Zero (on Xbox with DTS) or the sequel (not sure how good this one is), I watched my friend play that for 15 minutes in our local Game Store, it was fully lit and the shop had quite a few people in it, we had to stop playing it was freaking terrifying. THEY COME THROUGH THE FLOORBOARDS! ------------------------------------------------ I've always owned Kehmor, cheap as chips off Ebay

Quote: Doom3 : Performance Tweak - English
The basic idea is to extract alle pk4 files (e.g. with Winrar) and put it all in the /Base folder. Doom3 then doesnĘt constantly have to extract these files anymore while playing. Stories go that people that had to play in 800*600 medium can now effectively play it on 1024x768 high or even 1280*1024.
Note: The orginale pk4 files have to be removed after unpacking them, otherwise Doom3 will still use them. You can e.g. rename them to *.pk4.bak, so you can test if it works (and if it doesnĘt, go back to the old situation).
Note2: Multiplayer joining does not work anymore with this change ą so keep a backup of your Base folder, so you can just switch
Quoted this from several Doom3 message boards. I'll try this tonight for sure |

Hehe, I love the Thief games
Just played Doom 3 and on first impressions I'd say it's intense rather than scary. Scary for me is like "I'm in a room, the lights have just fizzled out - I wonder if there's a monster lurking nearby" whereas Doom 3 is more like "I'm in a room, the lights have just fizzled out, I know damned well there's a monster in here, I just don't know where exactly."
If you see what I mean
--------------------------------------------------------------- "Meantime, all around me is violence and robbery, coarse delight and savage pain, reckless joke and hopeless death." |

Edited by: Sochin on 04/08/2004 18:57:08 Just played a few rounds of multiplayer for the first time. I have to say it's pretty fun. Not much thats out of the ordinary except for the lighting and audio, but it is highly entertaining. I backed a guy into a corner and punched him to death to win the round, it was awesome.
There are virtually NO good servers out, so you can either host a listen yourself or join someones elses. I'm sure we'll start seeing dedicated servers on decent pipes popping up shortly.
Single Player:
One interesting thing to note is the Marine difficulty mode. Its fairly easy, with ample med packs everywhere, so you don't start getting dangerously low on health until like 10 or 15 hours into the game. I think id designed this difficulty mode to minimize dying, as it sort of pulls you out of the immersion. The medpack distribution seems to be planned to keep you at certain health levels. Early on in the game I rarely dropped below 90, but now halfway through the game I hover around like 30ish. I'll find a pack to bring me to like 50, then 30 seconds later I'll get hurt and itll bring me back to 30ish. Sort of adds a tension to the game.

Yeah. And I got that 'this is SO cool' feeling on one of the levels when I heard a female voice whispering 'follow me' and 'this way' while bloody footprints appeared by themselves on the floor leading me down a deadend hallway.
And you can't forget about the Turkey Punch game in the lounge area. That's the best part of the whole game.
