Wow, Doom 3 gets significantly creepier and more intense once you get into the Delta Labs. I like it with less demons and more creepy **** happening. The absence of monsters can be alot scarier then when their in your face.
The Gamespot review where it says D3 doesn't build tension is bull****. They probably played it in a huge room with half their staff watching. You gotta be alone and in the dark for it to really work.

Whoever said Doom 3 has better singleplayer than the old original HL, must be suffering from a difference of opinion. It's ok though. Once your vision clears up from the amazing graphics, the creepy sound, the scary mood, and the variation of the get the yellow, red and blue key to open doors, you will realize Doom 3's singeplayer is nothing groundbraking.
It is fun though, still not HL. A great effort by id, you have to give them credit. More stoy telling in the first few levels of Doom 3 than all their previous games combined.

The only thing that made HL1 great was the immersion and length. Other then that, it was your typical shooter. Doom 3's level of immersion and atmosphere greatly surpass Half-Life's. Its easy to compare them because the two games are relatively similar. Both take place in research facilities overrun by some alien/demon invasion. Most everyone is killed but you, and you have to fight through the base. Eventually you take a juant to another dimension (Xen/Hell), except in Doom 3 Hell is supposed to be totally awesome (Havent gotten there yet) while everyone agrees Xen sucked.
Plus, Doom 3 doesn't have any *** jumping puzzles (Yet). I friggin hated the ones in Half-Life.

speaking of babies.. those little baby things with wings. hah I want one as a pet.
Anyway. Doom 3 is much more fun than I thought it would be. It managed to make me jump back a few times.

if you don't wake up, i'll have to stop kissing you. all that flailing has made you sleepy. you rest while i untie you. stay here until they find you. My hand made mannequin. i won't let them get you. they'll know you're mine by the fingerprints on your throat. isn't she lovely? isn't she wonderful? like the *****s that we are, swatting flies from the wounds we design. |

If you don't play this alone, in the dark, with headphones/surround speakers, you could stop playing it altogether. No point in playing it then.
Glad to see the comments about Delta labs since I saved there yesterday (just after I got in there)

Had my copy on the third--available in local stores (US, east coast). Haven't had much time to play, did little more than check it out, but it's an impressive game for darkness, gore, and mood (let alone the fact that it's a piece of gaming history).
My personal highlight, so far, has been watching a zombie eating a corpse through the grill of a catwalk. Sound effects have to be heard to be believed. Anyway, I later "confronted" the gut muncher and after he was dispatched ... the corpse he had been eating stood up and attacked me.
Though there is some truth to "this game costs $1000 to play," it runs well enough on a mid-spec system to be thouroughly enjoyable.
Gradient is hiring. Read our Code of Conduct before applying.

Agreed. I think some of the less positive reviews are because people are playing it incorrectly. It REALLY has to be totally dark, and you need to be alone. Also, the surround sound makes a huge difference. Try Zalman 5.1 headphones, I have them and they rule.
Also, an interesting tweak. Open DoomConfig.cfg in Doom 3/Base folder and find the line "image_cacheMegs". Yours might say 20 or 32. Depending on how much RAM you have, set it to 92, 128 or 256. Experiment until you get the best performance. Most people see a HUGE improvement in performance after doing this. It doesn't seem to raise your FPS much, but it appears to keep it from dropping as much during heavy rendering. For example, my framerate used to plummet when something hit me (blur effect), but now it stays smooth. You'll also see a large reduction in initial FPS drop when entering a new large area.

I'm in Delta Labs Sector 2 now. Just barely got there and saved and quit at 2 am. Then took about an hour to unwind and get to sleep by 3 so I could get up for work at 7. I spent most of that night working Delta Labs 1. I almost decided to give up and start over on the 'sissy' difficulty level to see if it would make it any easier. But I persevered... I just hope I Sector 2 is a little nicer to me.

I only play FPS when it's against other players (I have played Half-Life mods for 5 years now but I never bothered to go past the 2nd level I think in the HL Game itself).
So does DOOM 3 have multiplayer support yet? CTF? DM?

Edited by: Saibin Gias on 05/08/2004 16:27:31 thank goodness i reserved a copy!
i now pretty much only play at night, alone, lights off with a candle inthe backgroud..and headphones
Jay-sus..no matter what time of day i think about it i ALWAYS get goosbumps. and i dont scare..at all. but this scares me.
especially the little girl " follow me..common this way* sees bloody foot prints walking, but no body* they stole my dolly * demonic laughter ensues* "
holy crap!! so what if the multiplayer side is not that great yet. id really did a SPECTACULAR job with the single player. well worth the money.
if you play alone in the dark with good sound, you will mess your self damn i love this game.
currently since i only play for like..4 hours at night im only at..the waste treatment plant sector 2? i think it is? just after the reverents start showing up. null Cookware for sale. Non-stick Teflon.

Just about every enemy has a cool scripted "debut" in the game. I especially liked the pinky's entrance, and the lost souls.
