So I get my latest issue of PCGamer...and the review of Doom3 is the highlight. I get so excited, I put the magazine down and take off in the car to the local software stores.
First stop...nothing. Second stop...nothing. Third stop...nothing, but I am told August 4th it hits the shelves. I can hardly wait!
Who's gonna be playing Doom3 August 4th besides me?
Eagerly waiting, MrBinary

Doom3.com says August 3rd is the "ship date". But I've also heard that it'll be Aug 6th (or later?) before you see it in stores
I fully expect to not be playing Eve for at last a week or more after I get Doom 3.
Anyone have any info on Hlaf Life 2 release? Again, I heard something about it being available in August, through Steam? HL2 will probably be an even bigger time sink than Doom 3, since the original is my favorite game of all time...

Except the two best FPS in the last 10 years have been on consoles... (GoldenEye and Halo) I mean jsut look at all the new games, all of them derive something from GoldenEye or Halo.
And another tihng, mouse and keyboard are multimedia tools, not designed for gaming, whereas a joy pad has been built from the ground up for it, and if a game like Halo uses it properly it can be far far superior. ------------------------------------------------ I've always owned Kehmor, cheap as chips off Ebay

I don't really understand what the fuss is all about - all the hype about Doom 3 has been about the graphics requirements.
The previews have not really been that good - Doom 3 is probably a good game but the genre has been done to death and all it does is add to sparkly bits to it.

Have you even played them? The only people who say that are hyper sensitive PC fanboys...
Go out there, complete GoldenEye on 00agent, and Halo on Legendary, then come back and say that it wasn't the best thing you have ever payed. And play it on Xbox it was crap on PC as it was designed for a controller. ------------------------------------------------ I've always owned Kehmor, cheap as chips off Ebay

Not a chance, HL and Quake 3 are the 2 best FPS games to have come out in a very long time, the only other games that even come close are a handful of slightly more recent ones that were built on modified Q3 engines anyway. Oh, and some silly people might say bf1942 as well, but i never really liked it.

KILL THE JOYPAD USING FR34K!!!! DON't YOU KNOW MOUSE AND KEYBOARD IS THE UBER 1337 STYLEE????

Mouse and Keyboard JUST multimedia tools???
Try asking how many people out of the Competition in Texas for Quake 2 with a massive $200,000 prize used Mouse and Keyboard and how many used Joypads...
Halo = Over-rated (Yes i have played it X-Box style)
Goldeneye was one of the greatest 1st person shooters ever, but only 'cos the controller shape of the N64 was the closest joypad to match Mouse/Keyboard functionality matched with its use of good modes of multiplayer.
Mouse/Keyboard started off in the world as multi-media tools but have evolved into the best control for games going. With fast keys the setup possiblities are good for personal preference and because people use the PC Mouse alot in general day stuff (The PC has become something most people come into contact with regularly) the hand eye for it is practiced all the time in the most meanial ways.

Keyboard = an extremely inprecise digital control.
Mouse = extremely sensitive analogue control.
Joyad = Two analogue controls.
See?
And maybe the reason thy were using Keyboard and Mouse for those games is because those games were designed for use with a keyboard and mouse? And PC joypads are ****. Heres a little fact for you, keyboards were specially designed to be awkward to use, originally people were typing too fast and kept breaking them, so they made them much much harder to use. ------------------------------------------------ I've always owned Kehmor, cheap as chips off Ebay

I spent almost 15 minutes trying to talk a girl in my local best buy to grab me copy out of their back room. 5 mins, to see if they had their shipment yet, and the other ten asking,(begging),nicely to get one. Oh well, didn't get it, but it was more to see if i could actually do it. I can wait, don't really want that bad.

It scared me real good a couple of times, not a bad game at all. The beginning of the game is a bit Half-Lifish though.

Edited by: Gundog Prime on 01/08/2004 22:05:59 Seriously Frost88 you keep talking about what things were ORIGINALLY used for and other ideals in the PAST. Mouse/Keyboard users could wipe the floor with Joypad gamers for the simple reason that while a joypad relies on a tiny little joystick trying to make fine tuned aiming within the microseconds it takes to get fragged, the mouse can give you massively more control on the same shot thus giving you the headshot a joypad would otherwise gift you a general hit. Basically due to the mouse being a more precise instrument it aims better...
Im sure you're never gonna agree with me, or i with you so post your post on the subject but i'm through with the back and forth
PS If keyboards were designed to be awkward the designer failed as most secretaries can speed type at ungodly velocity --------------------------------------------------------------

FACTS:
1) FPS were created for PC (not console). They are ment to be played with Mouse and Key
2) Halo was originally designed for PC. Mr Bill bought it and re route it for XBox (wich is no more than a Pc in a big black box)
3) I've played Halo on XBox (not mine Xbox,i don't spend money on consoles) and on PC (twice)....and I can assure u the "controller" of xbox sucks compared to mouse and key.
4) FPS --> PC It doesn't matter how much money Mr Bill spends he won't be able to change that
You know that MS created a controller for FPS? (I got a promotional video of it when I bought my SideWinder2) It didn't go too far

After playing through the first few levels in Doom 3, i'd say it doesn't live up to the hype. Unreal 2 can still match up to Doom 3, they don't really differ that much, except that Doom 3 is mostly indoors, and Unreal 2 outdoors. The character shading is the biggest difference.
The best part about Doom 3, however, is that it's damn scary
It scared the **** out of me in some places, especially during my night sessions... I haven't seen this kind of "scaryness" since Aliens vs Predator, and that should say alot.
Doom 3 is a classic FPS, not an innovating one. It does what it's designed to do, which is play well, good to superb graphics, and a mood which has next to no competition in other games except AVP.

Is that a good thing or a bad thing?
I personally found Unreal 2 drastically limiting and quite generic. It had potential but they went a bit nuts cramming in as many different locations as possible instead of spending time on the thing that mattered most, the gameplay.
So basically I didnÆt like Unreal 2, it sucked quite badly to put it in a far less eloquent manner.

A friend got it yesterday and say's it's basically the best game he's ever played. (He plays an awful lot). Some might not like it, of course, I might not even like it, but I'll see for myself August 13. Damn Swedish releasedates, curse them all!
Check out http://coop.doom3maps.de/ though... A Co-Op mod being made. And to those with a referance to AvP... I still have nightmares about airducts after playing the marinecampaign in AvP 1 and 2... Alien is the best as I don't have to have the whole house light up when playing. I know, I'm a wuss.

Originally by: Frost88 Heres a little fact for you, keyboards were specially designed to be awkward to use, originally people were typing too fast and kept breaking them, so they made them much much harder to use.
Using a QWERTY keyboard for controlling a game has absolutely nothing (zero, zilch, nada, bupkiss, etc) to do with why the QWERTY keyboard was laid out the way it was. The myth centers around type-writers anynow, not keyboards.
And "made them much harder to use" is also incorrect. Please do some research before perpetuating myths that you may have read on some website somewhere.
There are also many many studies available today showing no measurable difference in speed or usability between QWERTY keyboard and Dvorak keyboards, as a point of interest.
Many joypads also use ONE analog control (stick thingy), and ONE digital control (cross-pad thingy). Most games I've played with a joypad the cross-pad portion of it used for things like strafing if I remember correctly. Which is exactly the same thing you use a keyboard for in an FPS game.
Basically: whatever the heck floats your boat. you like joypads, use 'em. you like keyboard/mouse, use those!
But don't quote "facts" that are patently NOT "facts", but simply some piece of (dis-)information you picked up somewhere. blah.

The reason Microsoft bought up Bungie and made Halo for Xbox was because it worked! And irrespective of controller Halo is the best quite simply. It looks ok at best sure, but it plays like a dream, it has the best AI, a freaking fantastic physics engine, proper working vehicles including a bloody great hang glider thing. A brilliant level design (except the library, not sure what happened there), and the sound! Oh man I loved Halo's sound, 3000 confirmed voice samples and quite possibly the best music in any game ever, except possibly the theme tune from Metal Arms... ------------------------------------------------ I've always owned Kehmor, cheap as chips off Ebay

Tron 2.0 was excellent, the game itself had areas so well designed and set it felt like being in the world of Tron you grew up with.
Then the light-cycle game was there too....personally i found it as if not more addictive than the game
As a Tron fan and a person who always liked the idea of worlds inside computers as a kid I found Tron 2.0 to be my favourite FPS of all time. Not as scary as some, not as tactical as others...but the Enviroments rawked --------------------------------------------------------------

Having been lucky enough to play pretty much every FPS of the past five years (thank you Mr Ten Day Refund ;)) I have to agree with Frost88. Halo is one of the best examples of the genre, it takes some wonderful gameplay dynamics and mixes in an extremely well realised universe.
The other games that you mentioned are also great (my personal favorites include No One Lives Forever 2, Far Cry, Soldier Of Fortune 2, Half-Life and Medal of Honour) but IÆm a firm believe that out of the genre Halo and Half-Life, and now Far Cry, were the only games that have been able to deliver the most consistently rewarding experience.

I love FPS and have played most popular ones over the years, Halo hmmmmm..... those cutesy little midget cartoonish monsters with the pathetic whimpers and skrieks just killed the game for me, I ended up hating it.

Originally by: Frost88 The reason Microsoft bought up Bungie and made Halo for Xbox was because it worked!
Keep in mind, HALO was a completely different beast when Microsoft bought up Bungie and put em to work. It was looking more like a hybrid RTS/FPS (in 3rd person mode) than a standard FPS. I remember watching a EARLY development video with dev commentary, and one of the quotes was "Remember when HALO used to be cool?"
HALO is a good game, no question. But it was obviously rushed, and nowhere near as good as what Bungie was capable of. Level design stopped halfway through the game, and the rest was just a repeat of what came before. (again, they were really rushed) Physics didn't strike me as being anything special, nor were the vehicles. (the warthog handled WIERD) The best part of the Game was the AI. (if you played on legendary, which made all the difference in the world)
If you want to get an idea of the gameplay Bungie is capable of, play the marathon series. Quality stuff there dispite it's age.
I think Halo 2 will be Bungie's redemption. They know what Halo could have been, and now that they've been given the time to do it right, the sequel will deliver in ways Halo never came close.
Back on topic, I've had Doom3 for a few days now, and despite the ANNOYING random hard-locks, it's been a very enjoyable game. It's got more plot than you'd expect from a Doom game. (not saying much) It also does an excellent job setting the atmosphere, and making each encounter memorable. The game constantly keeps you off balance and uncomfortable. You never have as much health and ammo as you'd like, and you never have the room to maneuver you want. It's dark and claustrophobic. The encounters catch you off guard, and are very close quarters. If you remember the first run-in with the Skarrj in Unreal (in the tunnel) you know what Doom is like ALL the time.
Oh, and the fact that you have to put down your weapon to use the flashlight is pure evel genius. You have a choice. The ability to see, or the ability to shoot. Pick one.
EDIT: The multi-player maps are well suited to the dark, claustrophobic gameplay of the SP game. You just couldn't have 20 people running around those maps and have it be at all enjoyable.

Blah Halo and Farcry the best FPS games? That's highly debatable. Don't forget Half-Life and the only thing that could possibly beat Half-Life is Half LIfe 2. Developers are still trying to match or surpass the singleplayer bar set by HL 6 years ago. Even after playing Doom 3 for over 5 hours, I agree it is a great game but Half-Life 2 will be even greater. Lets not even mention the fact that the beginning of Doom 3 was a total rip from Half-life. Check it out.
Certainly Farcry is a good game but it falls into the category of an "in between filler" game. I beat it at the hardest setting and I already forgot about it. Nothing truly memorable except when you first play and go "wow that's pretty," and the better AI then you get over it.
Halo was a good game too, but it is so overhyped because the platform jocks don't have too much to brag about as far as FPS goes so they hold on to it like it was the second comming of the messiah.
I know I won't be talking about Halo and Farcry 10 years from now. They will only serve as mere anectodes in the pillars of gaming, only to be shadowed by the likes of Doom3, HL2 and possibly STALKER as the most important releases in the beginning of this decade.
/turn_off Dramasound01
Ofcourse, this is my opinion
"The human species suffers from a dimensional limitation. They are not able to understand that matter and mind are just one aspect of something more fundamental. We must strive to expand our perspective so we can see what our true reality is." Deep toughts by Mr.Pops, while consuming large quantities of Blue Pill and staring at the EVE gate in Genesis.

I'm getting a bit angry ehre....
People are trying to force their own personal favorites onto other people. The reason i mentioned those other fps (and i forgot to include Sin, go figure) is that there are many great games that are very comparable in quality to Halo and Doom 3.
The only real difference between them is how you perceive them. Giants is one hell of a good game if you like the abstract humor and setting of it, and also the really neat ideas in the gameplay. Same with MDK.
Far Cry is a classic Dr Moreau kind of story with absolute gorgeous graphics. It isn't innovating on itself, but it has a good solid base.
Doom 3 is the scariest game since AVP, which is also still a very good game. The graphics are top-notch, the mood is super, the gameplay is back to basics, which is a good sign when seeing the lot of "innovative and groundbraking new games".
Halo is more generic, but what it offers is good. It's rock solid goo fps fun, on either pc or xbox. Nothing more can be said really....
Half-life is an fps with a story. It also offers the illusion of freedom of movement, which ahs been implemented VERY well. It's full of surprises and twists and turns in both gameplay and story.
Unreal 1 and 2 are the game you play for the scenery and atmosphere. Who can't remember the first time you leave Vortex Rikers in Unreal 1? Harobed village? And in Unreal 2, the second sanctuary mission (the rainforest), and the drakk homeworld?
Tron 2.0, with it's truly unique graphic style and gameplay?
Max Payne, with a mood of "film noir" which sucks you in the game like no other one does?
And that's only shooters. There's literally thousands of games out there which all deserve to be played. No one can really look at a game objectively, and most people who poisted in this thread refuse to look further than the length of their nose, which is a real shame.
Just a partly off-topic rant....

I have Doom 3 and it is friggin awesome. If you have the hardware to run, buy this game now.
Also, make sure you have 5.1 capable soundcard and some Zalman 5.1 headphones (Or full 5.1 speaker setup). I invested in the Zalmans and its reaaalllly worth it. This game is scary as hell, and the level of immersion and atmosphere is unparrelled. Half-Life can suck it, Doom 3 is the new Gold Standard for Single Player gaming.

I gotta disagree
I found Doom 3:
- repititive - boringly dark - the same old type of gameplay
Overall, I've played a few levels into it, quite a few hours, and I've now quit. It sucks
On a good note, the sounds are absolutely spectacular, and the graphics/shadows/lighting too. But I just find the game play/storyline lacking and uninteresting.
I really really really hope Half Life 2 will be better.

If you want to be scared play Project Zero (on Xbox with DTS) or the sequel (not sure how good this one is), I watched my friend play that for 15 minutes in our local Game Store, it was fully lit and the shop had quite a few people in it, we had to stop playing it was freaking terrifying. Quote: Doom3 : Performance Tweak - English
The basic idea is to extract alle pk4 files (e.g. with Winrar) and put it all in the /Base folder. Doom3 then doesnÆt constantly have to extract these files anymore while playing. Stories go that people that had to play in 800*600 medium can now effectively play it on 1024x768 high or even 1280*1024.
Note: The orginale pk4 files have to be removed after unpacking them, otherwise Doom3 will still use them. You can e.g. rename them to *.pk4.bak, so you can test if it works (and if it doesnÆt, go back to the old situation).
Note2: Multiplayer joining does not work anymore with this change à so keep a backup of your Base folder, so you can just switch
Quoted this from several Doom3 message boards. I'll try this tonight for sure |

I'll try this tonight for sure
Did it work ?

Hehe, I love the Thief games
Just played Doom 3 and on first impressions I'd say it's intense rather than scary. Scary for me is like "I'm in a room, the lights have just fizzled out - I wonder if there's a monster lurking nearby" whereas Doom 3 is more like "I'm in a room, the lights have just fizzled out, I know damned well there's a monster in here, I just don't know where exactly."

Edited by: Sochin on 04/08/2004 18:57:08 Just played a few rounds of multiplayer for the first time. I have to say it's pretty fun. Not much thats out of the ordinary except for the lighting and audio, but it is highly entertaining. I backed a guy into a corner and punched him to death to win the round, it was awesome.
There are virtually NO good servers out, so you can either host a listen yourself or join someones elses. I'm sure we'll start seeing dedicated servers on decent pipes popping up shortly.
Single Player:
One interesting thing to note is the Marine difficulty mode. Its fairly easy, with ample med packs everywhere, so you don't start getting dangerously low on health until like 10 or 15 hours into the game. I think id designed this difficulty mode to minimize dying, as it sort of pulls you out of the immersion. The medpack distribution seems to be planned to keep you at certain health levels. Early on in the game I rarely dropped below 90, but now halfway through the game I hover around like 30ish. I'll find a pack to bring me to like 50, then 30 seconds later I'll get hurt and itll bring me back to 30ish. Sort of adds a tension to the game.

Yeah. And I got that 'this is SO cool' feeling on one of the levels when I heard a female voice whispering 'follow me' and 'this way' while bloody footprints appeared by themselves on the floor leading me down a deadend hallway.
And you can't forget about the Turkey Punch game in the lounge area. That's the best part of the whole game.

Wow, Doom 3 gets significantly creepier and more intense once you get into the Delta Labs. I like it with less demons and more creepy **** happening. The absence of monsters can be alot scarier then when their in your face.
The Gamespot review where it says D3 doesn't build tension is bull****. They probably played it in a huge room with half their staff watching. You gotta be alone and in the dark for it to really work.

Whoever said Doom 3 has better singleplayer than the old original HL, must be suffering from a difference of opinion. It's ok though. Once your vision clears up from the amazing graphics, the creepy sound, the scary mood, and the variation of the get the yellow, red and blue key to open doors, you will realize Doom 3's singeplayer is nothing groundbraking.
It is fun though, still not HL. A great effort by id, you have to give them credit. More stoy telling in the first few levels of Doom 3 than all their previous games combined.

The only thing that made HL1 great was the immersion and length. Other then that, it was your typical shooter. Doom 3's level of immersion and atmosphere greatly surpass Half-Life's. Its easy to compare them because the two games are relatively similar. Both take place in research facilities overrun by some alien/demon invasion. Most everyone is killed but you, and you have to fight through the base. Eventually you take a juant to another dimension (Xen/Hell), except in Doom 3 Hell is supposed to be totally awesome (Havent gotten there yet) while everyone agrees Xen sucked.
Plus, Doom 3 doesn't have any *** jumping puzzles (Yet). I friggin hated the ones in Half-Life.

If you don't play this alone, in the dark, with headphones/surround speakers, you could stop playing it altogether. No point in playing it then.
Glad to see the comments about Delta labs since I saved there yesterday (just after I got in there)

Had my copy on the third--available in local stores (US, east coast). Haven't had much time to play, did little more than check it out, but it's an impressive game for darkness, gore, and mood (let alone the fact that it's a piece of gaming history).
My personal highlight, so far, has been watching a zombie eating a corpse through the grill of a catwalk. Sound effects have to be heard to be believed. Anyway, I later "confronted" the gut muncher and after he was dispatched ... the corpse he had been eating stood up and attacked me.
Though there is some truth to "this game costs $1000 to play," it runs well enough on a mid-spec system to be thouroughly enjoyable.
Gradient is hiring. Read our Code of Conduct before applying.

Agreed. I think some of the less positive reviews are because people are playing it incorrectly. It REALLY has to be totally dark, and you need to be alone. Also, the surround sound makes a huge difference. Try Zalman 5.1 headphones, I have them and they rule.
Also, an interesting tweak. Open DoomConfig.cfg in Doom 3/Base folder and find the line "image_cacheMegs". Yours might say 20 or 32. Depending on how much RAM you have, set it to 92, 128 or 256. Experiment until you get the best performance. Most people see a HUGE improvement in performance after doing this. It doesn't seem to raise your FPS much, but it appears to keep it from dropping as much during heavy rendering. For example, my framerate used to plummet when something hit me (blur effect), but now it stays smooth. You'll also see a large reduction in initial FPS drop when entering a new large area.

I spent most of that night working Delta Labs 1. I almost decided to give up and start over on the 'sissy' difficulty level to see if it would make it any easier. But I persevered... I only play FPS when it's against other players (I have played Half-Life mods for 5 years now but I never bothered to go past the 2nd level I think in the HL Game itself).
So does DOOM 3 have multiplayer support yet? CTF? DM?

Edited by: Saibin Gias on 05/08/2004 16:27:31 thank goodness i reserved a copy!
i now pretty much only play at night, alone, lights off with a candle inthe backgroud..and headphones
Jay-sus..no matter what time of day i think about it i ALWAYS get goosbumps. and i dont scare..at all. but this scares me.
especially the little girl " follow me..common this way* sees bloody foot prints walking, but no body* they stole my dolly * demonic laughter ensues* "
holy crap!! so what if the multiplayer side is not that great yet. id really did a SPECTACULAR job with the single player. well worth the money.
if you play alone in the dark with good sound, you will mess your self damn i love this game.
currently since i only play for like..4 hours at night im only at..the waste treatment plant sector 2? i think it is? just after the reverents start showing up. null Cookware for sale. Non-stick Teflon.

Just about every enemy has a cool scripted "debut" in the game. I especially liked the pinky's entrance, and the lost souls.

Earlier I posted that multi-player was limited to 4 players. I just realized that is the case only for setting up non-dedicated servers. When multi-playing there just isn't much room for more than 4 anyway.
However, I've already seen some dedicated servers with a max of 16 or more players, so that once some custom levels and map packs come out, I'm sure we'll see some serious deathmatching goin' on like with Quake 3.

I've been playing it for a few days and although I love the general atmosphere I'm finding the gameplay quite repetitive...
I know by definition a shooter is repetitive in nature but Doom 3 is like going back ten years and forgetting about everything that's been added to the genre. The entire game is all about the shotgun and trying to survive the random enemy spawn points. It's not so much a case of skill but how quickly you can spin around.
It's a fun game but the random spawn points, sliding walls, boss battles and complete lack of tactics makes it somewhat annoying at times and ultimately lacking for a modern shooter. It works in that it's a remake but as a modern shooter...it still has nothing on Halo or Far Cry.

Has anyone found any secret levels? Old Doom games were pretty rife with them, and the only secret I've managed to find is that PDA full of thank-you notes from ID Software right before you battle the Cyberdemon.

Go out there, complete GoldenEye on 00agent, and Halo on Legendary, then come back and say that it wasn't the best thing you have ever payed. And play it on Xbox it was crap on PC as it was designed for a controller.
I agree totally here, there is no way if someone playing halo on an x-box and someone playing on a PC that runs the game the same, that the keyboard and mouse user wouldn't win.
Playing deathmatch UT2004, Quake 3, etc etc, without a keyboard and mouse you might aswell not bother coz those are some serious frag fests that require lighting controls, not some slow ass controller movements where by the time you aim you're dead...
And I've completed Halo on Legendary in both single and coop modes, mouse and keyboard is just better, no matter how you look at it.
