I don't think it was the cloaked ship they scanned out, but the iso-5. If the ship was loaded with the iso-5 the cloak probably couldn't disguise the ship's signature. If iso-5 can tear space/time it's probably a fair bet that a cloak couldn't hide it's signature completely. The Captain said that they only noticed the signature because it was what they were searching for (iso-5 sig).

Originally by: YunFu Yan I am very unhappy with this chronicle.
It seems way too forced and unlogical.
It feels silly and unrealistic that anyone would believe negotiation with rogue drones is possible, especially when their aggressive nature has proven itself so often already.
I completely agree. This was not quality writing, I'm afraid. It looks like something I would have written in an english essay at school.

I like the chronicle, it is perfectly written, and it gives lots of clues.
- Sisters of EVE, it's granted passage by everyone in times of need.
- Rogue drones not only can communicate to us, they have granted passage to Sisters of EVE in the past, hence the captain tries to do it this time, no 'Darwing Award' deserved.
- As rogue drones are a creation gone wrong of a Gallente scientist (is in one of the cronicles) and can communicate with humans, it is possible that Amarr scientists have come to some understanding with them and have some kind of deal.
- The banished Mimmatar Fleet may be still alive and is probably trying to return home.
- A continuos stream of '1' received of any communications channel its the rogue drone equivalent of the 'YARR!!!' of war, i you ever come across it, check your surroundings and be ready for battle.
- The Blood Raider and Thukker Tribe chasers may be about to arrive to the Sisters of EVE Apocalypse battleship.
- The cloaked Abbadon should have already detected drone's attack on the captain's ship.
Thanks for the chronicles CCP, they are just the perfect apperitive before what could be the biggest change to EVE...ever.

Originally by: Kylegar For the first time in a while, I'm dissapointed. I saw the last two chronicles evolving into a great chase, with the sisters of eve searching, the blood raiders trying to hunt them, and the Thukkers trying to kill the blood raiders, and discovering the superweapon at the same time the sisters did.
So you're saying the chronicle mirrors real life, where people make irrational and generally just plain dump decisions when greed takes over? And it leads to a pathetic and untimely death, plus lots of suffering?
Naah, bring back the plots that pushes our suspense of disbelief towards human behavior to the limit, and beyond. Those makes such great stories.

There even is a rogue drone agent somewhere in the Gallente COSMOS. When I ran the mission her avatar was labelled "Jove" but I think that was only because the database only knows the four player races plus Jove. In any case, she can quite clearly communicate, although you need to find some gizmo first (IOW, a haul mission) so you can accept her real mission. See http://www.eve-wiki.net/index.php?title=Drone_Mind_(1/2)_01010011_01001111_01010011_(L3)(Rogue_Drones)(Serpentis)

There is, or was, a regular agent mission where you face rogue drones. When you warp to the first stage a popup opens with some binary in it, and some guy translated it as regular ASCII message going something like "WE WILL PWN YOU" or such smack. Can't find a link to that at the moment though.
So a) drones can definitely communicate b) they speak the default language known in the EVE cluster c) they actually send the ASCII representation of the digits, which is extremely inefficient :)

Can you enjoy a story, if all you see is plot holes and people acting in implausable ways just because the plot demands it? These chronicles are so random and short, that it doesn't bother me in the least, but people following things closely or who are experienced in writing propably can't help but notice these things.
EDIT: Constructive criticism is never a bad thing. You need the feedback, if you want to improve your writing. I used to write walls of text with horrible grammar and didn't think how it all came across to others. It was pretty hard to follow. More random flow of thought than well thought out writing. I'm still far from a good writer, but thanks to some constructive criticism I've improved a lot. |

Rogue Drones harvest what from a sun? Unlikely. Droney droney melty. Just because CCP is too lazy to fix the clipping so that we can fly inside suns doesn't mean they can get away with this kind of stuff.
The density of this rogue drone superstructure, being larger than stars, as described, would create a gravity well that would act similar to a black hole, or a supermassive star, dragging everything around it toward it. Thus drones, SoE ships etc would not be able to function nearby.
Depending on density, the star would collapse under its own gravity and create lovely Mr Black hole.
It would either pull the sun into it, or vice versa? Considering the drones built it, they likly build it orbiting the sun, yet as its size grows they cannot move it into a different position.
Good read, too many holes though.
Also the plot line sucks.
size != mass -> being a superstructure large enough to eclipse suns doesn't necessarily imply mass on the same order of magnitude.
all of your assumptions concerning super massive collapse/black holes/major gravity wells would only apply if it were an incredibly massive structure; and not just a large one.

He paused, surveying his people.
"I want it," he said.
seems like something I would say.... didn't expect this from a sister. tbh I probably could understand his attempt to talk to the drones.... but i woulda packed a cloak and kept it running before I tried talking to them. |

Meh. I can't believe that you've so far failed to realize that "1" in binary is an expression of yes/positive/on.
This combined with the last line: "And the ship's captain learned that faith is not enough, for faith is blind by nature. Life needs insight. It is the dead, and the dying, that allow themselves to be led."
In my opinion the drones were saying that they were alive, truly alive, and thus truly thinking. As such they wouldn't be constrained by mere faith, tradition and function. That they wouldn't be led or controlled by anything but their own rationality. |

Yep nice story! And I do like all the tie ins with the incredible Empyrean Age novel! :) Though I second that the captian was very simple minded to try to reason with drones who do have quite a low chance to have a programming that enables them to solve morality dilemmas (looks like he wasnÆt that much of a scientist as I would have liked to believe from the beginning).
In regard to "parking" the superweapon: Well looks like Sarum wanted to hide that ship and I guess that near that super-isogen-5-hive is a quite secure place to do that. It might also have been an idea of the ôtrueö Sarum to limit her own access to the weapon.

I thought at the end of the EA novel, that the whole "incident" with Sarum's clone was the Broker inserting himself into her mind, in addition to her own mind.
As for everything odd that has happened since then, I think it's all within the plan of the Broker, only slowly being revealed to us over time. |

Great chronicle. I expect another one, as it wasn't said that the drones destroyed the hull.
Any way, negotiating with the drones may have been a good idea, but I would do it rather like "aling to nearest celestial object, send message, warp out when they start hitting the shield".

Edited by: Dennmoth Ferdier on 04/02/2009 08:44:59 I'm surprised to see the fact that this abaddon integrated superweapon has already been showed to us has been mentioned only once in this thread and left without notice.
edit: There was a vid about the amarr fleet clashing with the minmatar, where an abaddon launched a black-bluish energy sphere from its front that seemingly jumped from ship to ship, destroying them all.
I betcha the vid caused some speculation, but only now the lines between the dots start to connect.
Somehow this chronicle lights up a small glimpse of hope as to a new superweapon-class ship per race. Highly doubtful, 99.9% or so, but one can always hope :/ |

Of course you can negotiate with drones. Most folks just haven't figured out how to yet. The halfwit toasters you see floating in space are kind of a lower genus of drone - keep in mind there's sentient drones out there.
Another thing to keep in mind is that while humans acquire knowledge incrementally, drone intelligence evolves exponentially. The first one went nutso about 25 years ago - it's had all that time to learn. Imagine doubling your learning and capacity for knowledge every second, and you'll see why they've figured out how to mine blue giant stars.

1. Those drones aren't Rogue Drones you're talking about in the novel. The Rogue Drones in the novel didn't negotiate.
2. Proof or STFU. There's no fiction that states the Elders are Jove. they are referred to as mythical and the best of the tribes, that's about the extent of it. Not sure where you are getting the Jove-Elder stuff from. Confusing it with player fiction?
