Originally by: Cattegirn Is anything about the "victory" within Eve? Or is this essentially a meta-game hack? I tend to think that if game mechanic tools, like the alliance management UI, e.g., are "fair game" as far as inter-alliance warfare, the gameplay is bypassed entirely.
What is the difference after all between offering a hostile alliance *in-game* the services of your account's access rights to alliance management tools within the game and simply giving away your character for the same purpose? It is precisely the same thing as gaining account access to a hostile char and using your time in their account to disband their corporation and sell all their assets at a dollar to your own. The only difference is who pushes the keys, but the "mover" (the motivating force) is the same and both are "meta-hacks" of the game interface.
It is a hack, a simple accounting trick. It has about as much to do with the Eve Universe as accessing server privileges and going from there.
What would stop any director from potentially selling their account services for real dollars for similar stunts in the future?
The alliance management tools and the game mechanic (e.g., naming of alliances, corps etc.) are there to help *players* (not *characters*) manage their game, not decide inter-alliance wars.
For what it's worth...
BoB like many empires before them both ingame and in rl was brought down by a discontened member who decided that the best way to voice his unhappyness was to be a traitor in the ranks with access to all the tools needed to do the deed and get away clean with the added insult of selling out to the goons for maximum lulz. Working as intended.

No, it is a manipulation of the game control/ownership mechanic. Renaming labels on maps does precious little in real life.

Anything you do reflects back on your corp/alliance. Doesn't matter if he did it for himself, because if it benifit him it benifit his corp. And even if it happened only one time, it's still foul play and should be met with zero tolerance.
Just in the same way as one guy would ruin the good standing of his entire corp if he went around dishonouring ransoms or 1v1s. |

Even in vid games, you reap what you sow.
Is anybody else slightly reminded about George Orwell's book, "Animal Farm"? More specifically, how it ended?
Will this end the emo posts about the T20 Incident?
Such a huge shift in the political landscape will be interesting... I was momentarily worried that the goons would 'win' eve with this, but after some thought I now predict that ANY entity will collapse in Eve in some way once they reach a certain level of power. Lets call that point critical mass.
Bob is gone, now how will the swarm hold themselves together?

There's nothing EPIC about this... IF Goon had implanted someone into BoB with the intention of getting director status on the holding corp of the alliance in order to disband it then yes, it would be epic. However, having a bored jerk just "hand over the keys" to BoB is not epic at all. This wasn't planned, it wasn't anyone's idea ahead of time.
"Hey, look at me, I'm a director" "No wai! Prove it!" --gives access to forums-- "Neat, hey.. wanna disband crap I guess?" "Umm.. sure."
Totally not epic at all.

ROFL!
Ah, i so hope all this is true. It will be funny to see what happens in the resulting power vacuum in the ex-BoB territories now.
As mittani said on his mp3, if they were nicer to it's members this kind of thing probably wouldn't happen (as much).
I will be grabbing some popcorn and watching the forums with great interest today.

On the contrary, maybe the deeds that were done by themselves were nothing special but the effect it will have on EVE is truelly epic.

The epicness lies not within the deed itself but in the results stemming from that. Will be interesting to watch.
More popcorn please.

Start Reading Down From Here
the tl;dr version:
Assuming these Chat logs are accurate they show a few things
1. A Director of BoB's Executor corp 'defected' booted the member corps, took what assets were available and closed the Executor corp and therefore the Alliance (yes directors can do this, booting corps from an alliance is a simple right click and its instant)
2. As this character was present in many existing channels it was not a hack. (for the clueless if you log on in a 'new machine' you have to re add all your channels, including reentering passwords)
3. A corp was created named 'Band of Brothers' and joined Goonswarm. (this means an alliance with that name cannot be created)
4. Goonswarm now owns 'Band of Brothers'
5. Profit

I wouldn't like to fight SWA tbh, they have probably 30% of all pilots in EVE under their flag. |

Eh, one more reason not to go looking for alliances again. Why go through the trouble when spies rip out everything from under you. Trust always was a joke in this game. This is like the big red button that starts armageddon for some.
Frankly, I hated Bob only slightly less than I hated Goons but, this really is lame on so many levels. It would be just as lame if Bob pulled and it was lame when both sides perpetrated lesser incidents in the past. It just seems to mock any effort on anyone's part. And I'm skeptical at best this was all above the table espionage just based on prior shenanigans from both parties.
I really don't see this as getting any better. It worked once, why not again eh? |

So... the bob member corps make a new alliance. takes a couple of minutes. Then they work on establishing sov in Delve again. Who, exactly, is going to stop them?
Maybe they can't be bothered, but if they want to there's no reason for this to be anything but a speed bump.
Let the sad goons have their couple of weeks of being winners. It won't last long, their natural position is at the bottom of the food chain. |
