What is the best pvp Battleship for midsize to large fleets. Fleet has it's own tackle, webs, painter, etc so you don't need to include them in your decision. If you wish to participate please list reasons why you think a certain bs is the best. Thank you. (I'm using this thread as a guide of which skills to train) |

so then you have decided that your end game goal would be to partake in mid to large scale fleet battles in a battleship class ship? but you asked for the best, the best changes with the metagame and by the time you skill up to fly one effectively the best will have changed.
What do you want?
a rock that can sit still in the center of the field and hit all likely targets while taking massive amounts of damage?
try an abaddon fit with megapulses and scorch and a huge buffer tank
do you want..
more beef but at the expense of getting primaried more often than not?
fly a megathron.
I'm just saying you want to go for the style you dig, not what's considered best.
but by generalization i'd say these things
Caldari- support-ish roles scorp - ewar rohk - long long range raven - missiles
Minmatar- jack of all trades master of none typhoon - lots of options, medium range dps and remote reps tempest - medium range, speed for engagement control, lots of utility slots mael - arties or ac's, a rock like the abaddon but mobility is an option
Gallente- aggressive and dangerous to fly Dominix - lots of options, dps from any range, neuts/blasters/remote reps Mega - slow, but when(if) it gets to it's target there will be blood. Hype - large plate + rep tank, more suited to small bs gangs where a local tank can count
Amarr - the total war machines, eft gank/tank in a golden can Geddon - insane dps options with a nice rock of a buffer scorch ammo means you don't need to move Apoc - insane range bonus, can be used effectively for a tachyon fit or a mega pulse Abaddon - rock of buffer power, last through many engagements, resist bonus means logistics ships make you god.
so what do you want from your fleet battleship? |

Amarr = i-win BS, just pick one for the occasion cos apparently its their "role" to have a class of BS for every range in eve while the other races "roles" seem to be rather limited..... |

hmm.. by 'rock' here I mean that it's a ship designed to sit in the center of battle; it doesn't move well, but it has the range to make up for that, it doesn't do the best damage out there, but it will outlast all the other ships on the field.

Well, as a 'rock' aka a ship that can withstand massive amounts of damage, tank goes first and damage output second. therefore the armor pumps and plates.

Hey thank for the great reply. I was first training up for a torp raven because of the massive damage it can throw at a painted bc/bs but my corp seems to think ravens are useless for pvp. Also I was looking at the mega but it's extremely short range is a big turn off especially with a buffer tank you move like a brick. I like the abaddon but how is the plat insurance payout on a teir 3 bs?

yep, their roles are rather limited, but that's only because the current tactic of choice is medium ranged battleships = fleet battles.
but when you design your fleet/gang whatever around a different tactic and devote yourself to it's execution entirely you'll get results, that's all there is too it.
a full gallente style gang with in your face dps ships gets tight on the medium range ships what happens?
a full caldari style gang manages to hold range while keeping opponents locked down
a full minmatar style gang lures a larger gang into smaller skirmishes by separating them at gates and in different systems/belts
but it's not like tactics end with racial backstory.... "SPEED + GANK = SPANK... Spank that ***** up" |

ahh, a tier three BS is of course the most spendy to fly especially all rigged up.
a geddon however is a friggen dirt cheap and wicked alternative.
I wouldn't say a torp raven is worthless for pvp. I see them in armor RR gangs all the time. 250 km range with cruise missiles is nothing to laugh about either. You just have to be in the right situation (therefore bring the situation to your favor) and you shine |

The med range laser ships burn in different directions and the gallente ships kill a couple but then have the choice of either chasing one at a time to get in range while the med range ships lay down the big hits, or just sitting still and waiting for it to be their turn to get popped.
Originally by: Vanthropy a full caldari style gang manages to hold range while keeping opponents locked down
And gets owned by lasers that have greater range than torps.

Rokh, end of discussion. Best range, second-best dps (second only to the Apoc, and not by much), but much easier to fit and tank than any other sniper.
If, for some bizarre reason, your mid-large fleet is not engaging at long range, get an Abaddon with T2 pulses. |

Train amarr, the rokh is maybe a little better at sniping than the apoc due to slot layout and its ability to fit eccm but that depends entirely on the situation.
But the truth is amarr BS have such a variety and available range of use compared to the other races rather limited use that they are much better to train for. |

QFT lol.
Ofc the Tempest is pretty good. It's only noobs / dumb peoples who don't see the whole thing about the Tempest who only fail with the ship.
ANY descent / experienced / skilled Tempest pilot today will say the Tempest is good, specially after Quantum Rise expansion.
And yes, there isn't anything that is called the best battleship. It's all about skills and experience on how a ship will perform. |

You cant go wrong training amarr battleships because each of theirs is good for its intended role.
they have a long range sniper a medium range moderate dps massive buffer tank a close range hyper dps gank ship (with enough drones for utility purposes/more damage)
The problem is their heavy cap dependence and lack of mid slots. If all you want to do is provide firepower at whatever range, then amarr is the race to pick.
You also get the bonus of having t2 mediums by virtue of training for t2 larges, since you already have t2 mediums training battlecruiser to 5 just for the harby is a great thing to do, as it will serve you fine in small roaming gangs where your battleship may seem sluggish.
you can't go wrong with amarr.
That said, they are limited. Amarr converts cap to dps, thats about it.
Gallente have nice battleships too, and the domi is very handy because of its flexibility. The Mega will always be awesome.
Caldari.. well... pve the problem with its sniping battleship is that fleets dont engage at the rokhs max range becuase its nobody elses max range. It makes for a nice blaster boat at medium ranges.
Minmatar. The typhoon is potentially awesome, the upside of typhoon training is you are also training missiles and shields, meaning that you can train caldari battleship to 4 or somthing for a raven to pve with. The tempest is good before you have everyskillat5loltyphoontraining.
its easy to think of amarr as overpowered and the obvious choice, and it is the obvious choice if you just want to sit there and shoot stuff, but you will always feel restricted by flying amarr. They are one dimensional.
Fly the ships that you think look best, that's the only good advice anyone can give you. I like all races battleships, i think they all have their own personality and can easily be romanticized

Very overlooked and very true. Rokh can dish out some serious damage with 8 blasters on board with some surprising range. I can't tell you how many times I've unloaded on a gang as we go gatecamp busting. Tend to get ignored initially because they assume you're carrying rails, by the time they realize you're carrying blasters, they've taken heavy damage, and your massive tank will probably keep you alive if they try to primary you. Works well in low sec in smaller gangs. |

Bwahaha!
Do you fly Amarr ships? They are nowhere near "i-win" ships. They are good, they have their place in a fleet but by no means are the be-all, end-all of battleships.
- They are all around whomped by all types of EWar. Easiest to jam. Tracking disruptors own them. Sensor damps own them. They are so insanely cap dependent NOS/Neuts own them.
- With a few rare exceptions they are all laser ships (turrets). They have the least capacity of any race to choose damage types. Pretty much stuck with EM/Therm.
- As masters of the "middle ground" their close range weapons have the worst tracking of any close range system (where tracking really counts) and their long range weapons are the shortest range of all long range weapons (where range really counts and tracking means little). Yeah you can use an Apoc for range but that is a niche sniper ship role.
- Their cap issues are such that they practically demand cap rigs and/or slots be used for cap rechargers. Slots other ships use for more useful things.
- They are also miserably mid-slot gimped. Ever try to tackle someone with an Amarr ship? Use ECM? It can be done of course but is largely a joke.
Not saying Amarr don't have their good points...they do. They also have their drawbacks as any ship in EVE should.

There is basically no ship which can use neut-nos-distruptor-DPS-ECM's-damps-etc.. Effectively at same time. And when it comes to fleet fights, then you got the back-up yourself too.. Positioning and knowledge of enemys weakness is more than the best DPS.

Yeah Amarr BS'es are really overpowered / I-Win. That must be very true when not a single Amarr BS or other Amarr ships have EVER won over my Tempest with the setup i use now on sisi.
Everytime i see an Amarr BS or other Amarr ships on my overview, i laught. Reason is, Amarr ships is the easiest ships to kill in my Tempest. It's because my EM and Thermal resists are kinda uhm, well, high.
They are so ****ing easy to kill that is shouldn't even had been allowed.
One of the Abaddon's i killed in a 1 vs 1 fight took a whole 160k damage before he died. But even that, i still killed him, even when the fight took like 15 mins.
Those fights are done on sisi after the web and speed nerfs got on sisi.

Many of those Amarr BS'es i have been fighting have been really good t2 fitted. And many of those players are also extremely skilled in Amarr. No i'm not saying everyone that i have been fighting is that.
But isn't is kinda funny that no Amarr BS'es have won over my Tempest for maybe like 8-9 months. Doesn't that tells you something?. |

The best battleship is the raven.
It sucks for pvp, its the 'newbie battleship'. Its small and looks funny. Few people actually like it, lots of people feel dirty using it, and some genuinely despise it. But despite all of this, its always there to help you get back onto your feet. |

QFT lol.
Ofc the Tempest is pretty good (i'm not saying it is the best). It's only noobs / dumb peoples who don't see the good things about the Tempest who only fail with the ship.
ANY descent / experienced / skilled Tempest pilot today will say the Tempest is good, specially after Quantum Rise expansion.
Yes i'm talking about the close range fitted Tempest. The Sniper Tempest is another story.
And yes, there isn't anything that is called the best battleship. It's all about skills and experience on how a ship will perform.

Edited by: Cyborg94 on 08/02/2009 00:57:28 Well, I want to thank everyone for their e-opinions and advice. So it's looks like ppl have had the most success with Amarr bs. I want a bs to be my primary ship I fly in fleets/gate camps, ops. I will start training Amarr asap, even though they are the fotm I have a feeling they will remain useful because their lasors use alot of cap and the payoff for that is good range and awsome dps. Thank you and keep the suggestions coming. Also how is em damage against armor tankers because most pvp ships armor tank so I'm a little worried about how much of my damage will be resisted.

If, for some bizarre reason, your mid-large fleet is not engaging at long range, get an Abaddon with T2 pulses.
Rokh DPS is smaller than APOC, tempest. maelstrom Megathron, Hyperion, Armageddon and abaddon (at the standard jsut over 150km sniper range). So rokh is good sniper. but no where near HIGH dps on that. ------------------------------------------------- If brute force doesn't solve your problem... you are not using enough

Poor excuse.
Many of those Amarr BS'es i have been fighting have been really good t2 fitted. And many of those players are also extremely skilled in Amarr. No i'm not saying everyone that i have been fighting is that.
But isn't is kinda funny that no Amarr BS'es have won over my Tempest for maybe like 8-9 months, also after i started to use the setup i use now on my Tempest. Doesn't that tells you something?.
After QR, yes (Before QR nope). But that if you talking about 1v1 or RR combat. On gankfest groups the mega pulse ships still rule over them.
comparign ships 1v1 might look okay but is something that happens so rare in eve (outside of sisi) that is almost irrelevant. ------------------------------------------------- If brute force doesn't solve your problem... you are not using enough

Torp Raven can hang with any other close range bs in a gang with the primary painted up, buffer tanked. Fairly cheap. And it continues doing 100% damage well beyond blaster range (cept neuts on a rokh with void, and even then 26km is the outside of its falloff), Scorp is great for RR bs roaming, jamming & remote rep support. And it's practically throwaway considering insurance buys you another ship + fit. Rokh is the best sniper (can buffer tank it and fit a max range snipe setup, so snipe fleet v snipe fleet you will get out alive much more often than your fleetmates). Rokh also a decent heavy neut blaster boat, 16km optimal and another 15 falloff with null. With 140k+ effective HP to go with it. This would be that caldari ROCK setup =)
The amarr whining and complaining is pretty lol. They are much more competitive than they used to be but far from OP. As many pointed out each ship has its roles, or in minmatar case the lack of a role being the role =) |

Even after being slaped around with the nerfbat for well over a year the thron is still nice. CCP hasn't killed it just yet....I'm sure they'll try again.
In gang PvP I use Megathron, Rokh and Scorpian. Really depends on what the gang needs on that day. Nevermind I burned alot of time on training both gallente and calradi battleships to level 5.
As others have said, the amarr battleships are really nice rides now. Considering the pain amarr pilots went through for several years it's about time they had some fun. |

Originally by: Cyborg94 What is the best pvp Battleship for midsize to large fleets. Fleet has it's own tackle, webs, painter, etc so you don't need to include them in your decision. If you wish to participate please list reasons why you think a certain bs is the best. Thank you. (I'm using this thread as a guide of which skills to train)
You were asking about BSes for midsize to large fleets. Many forum geniuses havent figured that out and talked about everything but not giving answers. Reading hurts.
1. Pure brutal and simple way (simple is beautiful) - Abaddon (HP/DPS/range) - Apoc (same) - Armag (same)
Forget about other BSes if you want pure DPS hard ship. Amarr are 'the best'.
DMG is all you want. Other BSes in your fleet SHOULD HAVE remote reps to repair you if needed. You also should have at last 1 remote rep to help others. Every BS in fleet SHOULD relay on other ppl remote reping. Lov slots should be tank/hp/dmg modules.
2. Second path... here winner is Scorpion. Make it GOOD tank armor or shield (you probably want to chose armor because other BSes SHOULD HAVE armor remote reps). Cruise launchers at hi slots, neutralizers, remote rep... Why scorpion? Because enemy fleet will PRIMARY IT. And your team will REPAIR IT AND SHOOT ENEMY SHIPS ("omg! Scorpion, primary, primary scorpion!!!111"). They will lose time at it and you have time to kill them. Your guys shoud have know that tactic and be ready to repair you. You can even jam your enemies while they are loosing time at you. Figure out best fit for you. Tank is a 'must have'.
And final reason for scorp... remember 2nd worst thing you can do to enemy in fight is... turn him off from fight. 1st one - destroy it. 3rd one is slow it or make him weaker. In all those 3 scorp will do his job very good. He does all 3 points ive mentioned.
1st path is best for exprienced pilot with many SP = good dmg. 2nd dosent require milions of SPs, you just need tank and jaming skills to be good at that role.
Good luck. |

Dude tbh every race as good BS's.
The current "omg awesomesause" is amarr for whatever reason as a few months ago they were the suck (althou they never sucked ppl were just dumb).
I for once have always used amarr ships but i always had a thing for minmatar so atm i'm training minmatar bs 5.
I am a great fan of the tempy, and the mealstrom is just bloody awesome, and as soon as i get my missle skills up to scratch ill be flying a typhoon aswell!!
Also my alt is galente and i can tell you that the domi is just pure joy, and althou its probably the cheapest BS of the game its probably one of the most feared. Also you cant go wrong with a mega, althou you are gonna end up being primary so you have to be carefull.
Amarr are great they always have been tbh, they have good dps gret tanks too, althou they move and alight like a bus with flat tyres, and forget about fitting a mwd in them its pretty much hell.
As for caldari, well never flown them much, but the scorp will always have its place in fleets, a torp raven is always something to be afraid of and the rohk...well never fought against them much, but there were a few blaster ones that were a pain.
But since you are looking for a bs for large fleets go amarr. They have always been the best fleet ships, because of their slot layout, their lack of mid slots make them very hard to use solo, and also they are slow like hell.
Other good chances are rohks, they have awesome range good dps, and its shield resist bonus makes them harder to kill. raven its ok too, althou missles take their time to reach the target.
Minie and galente have nice fleet ships too, althou since they have alot of more utility slots then the amarr and caldari ships, they really shine in small gangs/solo work.
