This is for all of us that have had those wonderful *facepalm* moments while we play this game. We learn something, see something, or read something that makes so much sense, we can't believe we missed it! For example it took me seven months to realize that if I hold down the Ctrl key while clicking on enemies it targets them! Boy did that make my life easier, especially salvaging.
So do you have a quick tip or a small piece of advice that would make a new player's life easier? Perhaps something in the UI they my not know about? Post up and I will update a master list. Try to keep them to a few lines at most. I'll get things started.
-Holding down the Ctrl key while clicking on objects/enemeies/etc will target them as you click on them -If you hit Warp to Zero, then turn on the Auto Pilot, your ship will jump as soon as it leaves warp since you are within range. Disable Auto Pilot and repeat for faster traveling. -When you are looting wrecks, jetcans, or any object in space pressing Ctrl+A will select all the contents at once and let you drag them to your cargo hold -You can create multiple tabs on your overview. This is very useful when you are exploring, mining, traveling, etc since you can set each tab to it's own display profile. -Cybernetics 1 is all that is required for +3 stat implants. It will greatly improve your training times if you get this skill soon enough -If you haven't already done so, look up EveMon and Eve Fitting Tool. They are two of the most helpful Eve apps out there.
And that should get us started. Remember, keep it simple and straight to the point!

- Shift clicking 'n' dragging on a stack of items lets you split that stack into whatever you want! - When Mining, travel right up to a clump of Asteroids. Bookmark your location. Mine to your hearts content. When your cargo is full, warp to the station as normal, then warp to your Bookmark; no more traveling to the roids! Especially good when hauling! - When Mining, always spilt your lasers onto seperate roids, this is so your mining two roids at the same time without the drawback of the annoying 'The asteroid is depleted' message all the time! - When doing the long slog of learning skills, train the memory and intelligence skills to level 4, then straight onto the advance memory and intelligence skills to level 4. That way all your other vital learning skills will train much faster! - Don't train all your learning advance skills to level 5, only your desperate attributes! Especially with an Intaki toon like me, with very low perception, this way you wont waste weeks of unneeded training but that annoying Battlecruisers and Battleships V will more than make up for it!
All I could think of at the moment.

-Even industrial characters need to learn how to shoot stuff. Combat missions are easy in the beginning and can help you raise standings which lowers taxes -Drones are universal. All races use them and they help/protect your mining ships if you go that route. -After your first month or two, start planning your skills for the future. Set goals for the short term benefit and long term plan -Lots of Eve related info on the web and here. READ READ READ!

- dont buy things you cant afford to lose, i know that CNR looks pretty but....... - Just becuase you can fly something doesnt mean you have the skills to use it well, train the skills then get in the ship or risk losing it - dont be lazy and buy things from the station you are in, read the market details well as a few jumps could save you lots |

As an addition to the previous poster: when buying stuff, if you actually WANT to buy it in the station you're in, don't just click on "buy", you may end up with stuff in another station and/or wondering where your stuff is
Also: when mining in 0.5 to 0.9 systems, carry combat drones, not mining drones (especially when you get yourself a barge/exhumer) as you can get extra income from blowing up the rats while you mine (and mining drones aren't as good as lasers especially in bigger mining ships) - yes, I did try mining with drones and lasers in the early days and nearly lost a cruiser. ===================================== It smells of spoon! ===================================== |

PAY ATTENTION when buying stuff off the market...a common scam is to reverse the numbers for "quantity" and "price" in the Market window. The columns are right next to each other, so they are trying to trick you into buying cheap stuff at really expensive prices.
You don't want to be be buying 1000 light missiles for 217,000 ISK each.

The amount of skill points a character has and the amount of experience a player has are two totally different things.
As was mentioned, Learn how to fly your ship well. If you have experience, you can fly a T1 frig with deadly efficiency against larger ships. Skills help but it's experience that really counts. |

Get used to using the scanner, especially while mining. Try scanning as far as you can, find a point of interest and try rescanning at a closer distance until you have a general idea how far it is. From there, try figuring out what direction it is in. Learning how to use the scanner properly could mean the difference of life and death in lower sec and 0.0 areas. |

Drag your ship from the Ships window into the Station to make it active. Save your salvage and train a few simple skills to build items that sell for a lot. eg: CCC's and Cargohold optimization rigs. Create multiple sections in your Buddy List.

In space, you can drag items from cans/wrecks to the "cargo button"(not sure the correct name, the circular one on top of the "scanner button" anyway) directly, without openning your cargo window. |

Edited by: Joe Starbreaker on 11/02/2009 07:19:00 You can move things on the interface that may not appear to be moveable. For example you can move the icons of the ships you have targeted: look for the little "crosshairs" symbol that appears above and to the right of them.
You can click-drag to move the buttons that represent your modules. Since the top row are activated by F1-F8, move essential items like your MWD, warp disruptor, etc. to this row so you can activate them more quickly in combat.

Edited by: Buga Buga on 12/02/2009 12:15:14 - Shift-click on the Info Icon opens a separate window. Very helpful when you want to compare things.
- Jump > Align to station/gate > Hit the AB/MWD button > Hit the cloack button > Align, uncloak and warp. Saves your ship from those pesky gate campers (doesnt work really well in a bubble but it's still helpful).
- Write the system you want to travel to in a chat window, right click > link solar system> right click set destination. I do this because it's faster than opening the map.
- If your have systems bookmarked you only have to open people and places > places and right click set destination (that if you dont have 2000 bookmarks like some people).
- Go to you map, settings and select "Instant" animation.
- Use the market quickbar folder option. You can save a ship setup and access it very fast. Make a folder named "Ham Drake" for example. Then go to the search button, search for the items you would put on a Ham Drake. Right click on the item and "add to market quickbar". Repeat for all the items. Takes a little time at first but after that you can make another fit almost instantly (assuming you are in a trade hub or the items you need exist in that region). Don't forget to move the items in the folder btw
- If you have the habbit of collecting stuff, ie keeping loot from missions, use station containers. Label them as "High" "Mids" "Lows" etc. I like my item window tidy so I use a bunch of them named "Meta 1 High" "Meta 2" etc "Faction" "Important stuff" etc. I know people that sold their implants because they accidentally selected more than what they wanted to sell.. or people that sold their faction stuff because they were dumb and did not use a container.
- Always rename your ship, if you're not a carebear. "Buba's Caracal" is not a very nice name but "ds4f34fvvnf dfdff" can save you some times. Also, in a fleet, a fun and very helpful thing to do is for all the ships to use the same name like 20 ships named "Buba's Falcon".
- Remember that 1 jump is too far away and 1000 isk is not that much money. You can make millions if you use this rule when trading.
- Dont be lazy, look up the info on your next victim. Even if he is 1-2 months old he could be someones alt, someone that could be uber at Eve, someone that can pwn your ass.
- Use everything you can to gain advantages over the others. This includes programs (NavBot, Evemon, Evefit) and various sites (Eve-central.com is a good example).
- Dig up any information you can find on your targets. Again, don't be lazy. I use whatever I have at hand. I start with the game, I use locator agents, I ask around. I use killboards to search for them and see what they usually fly and what they killed in the past to make an idea on how skilled they are. Finally, I search their chars on ineve or eve-sheet and, if I am really lucky, I can get a crapload of info on them. Knowing their skills is, almost, half the battle won
Will think of more after I get some coffee /edit grammar

It also saves you a lot of time. Like with the market quickbar you can make a container named "Ham Drake" where you put your fit. If you need a Ham Drake you only have to buy the ship and open the container and voila a very fast fit ready to go into battle in a few seconds.

- If you PvP dont be lazy, look up the info on your next victim. Even if he is 1-2 months old he could be someones alt, someone that could be uber at Eve, someone that can pwn your ass.
- Use everything you can to gain advantages. This includes programs (NavBot, Evemon, Evefit) and various sites (Eve-central.com is a good example). All can help you with ship fits, tactics, navigating, planning, etc.
- If you PvP fit several ships and keep them where you fight. If you get blown up you can always dock and come back with a new ship ready to pew pew.
- Remember that if you get blown up in your ship, get out and get docked ASAP. When you are in your pod you are risking all that money you spent on implants and any douchebag in a rookie ship can blow up your pod if they want too.
- Always use keyboard shortcuts. Ctrl+space for example stops your ship. It is useful sometimes when you just initiated a warp to command and you don't want to anymore (either because the fleet is going somewhere else, there's danger or whatever). This is a default shortcut but you can set up custom shortcuts for a lot of stuff. Use shortcuts for your drones (attack, orbit, return, etc), items, windows, etc

My fault actually. I added or subtracted a bit from your stuff, like PvP specific and what not. Station containers are nice, but they also have that wonderful cool down period before you can get rid of them, plus they have all that password/locked fun stuff. Freight containers offer a ton of space without the hassle. |

1) Large lists of things can be selected by clicking on the first and then shift clicking on the last. You can also use ctrl-click to select or deselect single ones within the list.
2)You can put bookmarks into separate folders; for instance bookmark the systems you use a lot and put then into a folder called 'my systems'. Put the stations you dock at into another, and so on. You can sort the bookmarks by type to make this easier. Then you can open just the systems folder to select your destination quickly and easily. Other points in space become active under a sub menu, without making a long list whenever you right click anywhere.

If you are in the habit of just dumping all the rat loot from ratting and missions into your station items window as I am, take a little time to check the market value of the items once in a while.....I found a few ECM modules I had sitting around that I was able to sell for over a million isk each. Also, I use station containers to sort my items, but if you have station containers, never choose the select all/repackage all option in the items window. I did, and found out the containers were repackaged and all items were now outside the containers and needed re-sorting! |

When doing a mission, I always read the mission description in the journal entry, even after accepting the mission from the agent. Some missions appear to be a simple courier mission, but the description in the journal will be specific...if it says "encounter" there will be fighting involved! Also, check the mission description to see if there are frigate class or smaller gates in the mission, this will save you from taking a cruiser all the way there, only having to return to switch ships when the cruiser cannot pass thru a warp gate. One more tip, the mission reward is generally commensurate with the difficulty of the mission, so that is also a factor when deciding which ship I will fly that day. And, if you find yourself starting missions for a new faction or race, and find level 1 or 2 mission grinding a bore and not challenging, try doing the mission with the smallest, weakest ship you can field. That will surely create more of a challenge and up the excitement a bit! |

To add to mining bookmarks tip: warp to belt, bookmark "Scordite 1", warp to another belt, bookmark "scordite 2", warp back to "scordite 1" - begin mining. This is faster than ambling at 62 m/sec in a Hulk.
Once you've exhausted the scordite in "Scordite 1", bookmark other scordite roids that are farther away in that belt as "Scordite 3". Warp to "Scordite 2", rinse and repeat.
This way, you always warp to the 'roids you want to mine, thus negating traveling time.

Let me add to that to *always* and before accepting a mission from an agent to read the mission description FIRST.
The reason is simple, if you don't you might have accepted a mission that lands you in low sec. Or you end up with a courier mission with more cargo then you can ship under a certain time. Once accepted and then declining a mission will cost you standing with the agent, his corp & faction.

Edited by: Maria Kalista on 07/03/2009 13:14:10 - Don't accept freeform contracts. They're always scams.
-Don't buy your PLEX via contracts, just use the market. A bit flying around will get you one or more with an acceptable price.
- Once bought PLEX can be activated remotely, in other words you do not need to pick it up from the station you bought it in.
- If you have to go through low sec, try to plan it 10-5 minutes before DT or right after DT if you have no experience with low/ 0 sec.
- When CCP is patching don't download the first patch that comes up while they're still working on it. Just wait until the servers are up, then DLL the patch.
- If you buy something from contracts, make sure where the item is. You might end up with an expensive item waiting for you 6 jumps deep in low sec.
- Read carefully before accepting courier contracts. Be sure you can dock where you have to pick up/ deliver --> like Player owned structures/ stations.
- Always set a long skill ( long as in DAYS) before CCP introduces a new patch/ expansion to Tranquility.
- If you mission near hubs expect to see other players in your mission salvaging the wrecks you left behind and even loot them. If you don't like that--> don't mission near hubs.
- Read carefully (EVE is a lot of reading & math) the description of the ship you want to fly. It very clearly states the bonuses that ship has. Like on a battleship it might say something like: Quote: Special Ability: 10% bonus to Large Energy Turret capacitor use and 7.5% bonus to Large Energy Turret optimal range per level.
Per level means per level of the skill book Battleship.

You can play eve however you want.
You can make loads of money mining
You can make loads of money mission running
You can make loads of money with PVP
You can make loads of money scamming other players
You can make money any way you choose to play
And you can loose equal amounts of money on any of the above
You can diversify your character as much as you want, and still make loads of money
You can make loads of money solo
but you dont need loads of money to enjoy the game
You can win engagements even if you are flying a ship that you just think looks cool, even though people on the forums told you to buy the other one.
The same goes for weapons - if you want to use missiles, train and use missile boats, don't shun them because someone told you that they have a rail-boat that does a billion DPS, and you will loose every engagement you have becuase velocity x flight time equals ... blah ...
Even so, read the forums.
Eve is a game best suited for the long-term. It will last you longer than Halo 3 did. You may not enjoy it if you can't come to terms with that.
You don't need two accounts to play
In effect, this is a huge sandbox - don't let some kid tell you that you can never win 'cause you're using the wrong spade or building the wrong castles. If changing your play style stops you from enjoying your time, your missing the point.
I started playing a long time ago, and my game didn't really take off until I started setting my own goals based on what I wanted, not what I had been told was right.
Ask for, and listen to, advice - but take it as advice only.
You win EVE by having fun.
(In saying all that, I'm not advocating buying a Caracal, fitting it with beam lasers, camping a gate in 1.0 and waiting for the cash to roll in from the ransom demands. Though I've never done that before ... maybe worth exploring)

Amazingly, no one has mentioned the drone shortcuts it seems.
Press esc to get the menu, go to shortcuts and set keyboard shortcuts for the drone commands.
Also, if you have a high end video card and your card is going nuts generating 150 FPS melting itself, in the display menu set the interval to 1. Now the card will only display the amount of FPS that your monitor can actually display. Use CTRL-F (I think) to display FPS in game. |

That trusted corpmate you've known for years? He's out to get you.
That lost little new guy in his rookie ship? He's out to get you.
The trader you're about to make a tidy profit from? He's out to get you.
That GM you petitioned about losing your ship to a scammer? He will listen patiently to you, ignore your request, log on to his other account and get you.
As for me? I don't know you well enough yet but give me sufficient time and I'll be out to get you as well.
Welcome to EvE.
