Edited by: Aynen on 11/02/2009 03:43:42 For those who engage in Factional Warfare: Do you feel that you can get good fights on a regular basis, or that most of the time you or your fleet are flying around hoping for a fight that usually doesn't come, or is otherwise disappointing? |

The latter. It's a lot like looking for a fight in LowSec, except you trash your faction standings instead of your security status.
Really, though, you just need to check out the faction warfare stats. The kills per day are like, what, around 1% of the total militia population? Even giving some allowances for alts, spies, people who don't log in much, etc, that's really pathetic.

Compared to 0.0 PvP, FW is a gold mine of small pvp combat. Problem people face is they put fleets of 20-30 out there, the other side avoid them.
If you ain't getting the fights.. check how many blues in local.. and move on.

Look for contested systems and go to them, most of the PVP I find when flying in ops happens over plexs, but also if your in a fleet of 20+ flying around don't expect small 6 man fleets to come at you there is a difference between being chicken and being stupid. When I do get kills in fleets it is normally because we have found a small plexing fleet in a contested system and engaged. |

Edited by: Raimo on 11/02/2009 10:31:13 Ditto to Evil and Smokin Gunn. Grab a Ceptor or AF and go solo or get together a small gang of frig and cruiser hulls and you're guaranteed fights. Most don't want to (knowingly) engage a blob unless they have a bigger or better gang themselves, stick to small mobile stuff and you will most likely get a lot of action. ---

I've mostly done one of two things in FW so far:
-Go into a big fleet and hope for an equally big fight.
-take a frig and look for friendly plexes to take.
The big fleet aproach usually means hours of travelling and waiting and very little actual fighting. The second option is actually not ment for running into fights since I wouldn't do defensive plexes in anything costly. In the rare occation that I do run into a 1 vs. 1 fight, it's usually a scout belonging to a much bigger group.
Either way, it's not really the result I'm after. I asume that for most people, the point of joining a fleet is getting into a fleet vs. fleet fight. But they don't seem to happen quite as often as I'd like (or perhaps I just have poor timing). And 1 vs. 1 fights are usually interrupted by back-up flying into it.
Is this the case for you guys too or am I just unlucky?

Here's where you are doing it wrong. Take a frig and look for unfriendly enemies to pop. You will go pop a lot as well ofc but with experience you should start winning some as well.
And yeah, the big fleets often are very boring, no surpise there. I very rarely join general militia blobs for this very reason. There are better FCs whose blobs suck less but they are still blobs.
So either go look for fights solo and probably die a lot but have tons of fun doing it OR try to get some likeminded pilots together for smaller 5-10 man roaming gangs, be it for plexing/PVP or pure PVP. ---

Well, it's the only way to learn really, just go looking for fights proactively. Ofc with experience you will learn to avoid the most obvious traps and know your viable tragets better etc but it will always stay risky. That's the beauty of EVE PVP really. ;)
You know about mashing the warp to (a random celestial) button when your ship is hitting structure- trick, right? Losing clones in low sec is rather hard. Lag and mistakes will do it once in a while but usually you should be able to get your pod out. ---

I guess you can bore yourself to death in FW if you are in teh militia without a corp - all you can do is 1on1, which is unlikely to be found as most single ships either have a gang near them or they run because they think you have a gang close to you.
The other thing you can do is flying in militia gangs which lack coordination and often end up in spy-infested minor blobs the other side usually avoids.
If you're in a good corp with regular roaming gangs, avoiding to fleet up with militia members alltogether, you can have quite some fun - most often vs pirates, but yeah - you get small gang warfare on a regular basis.

For sure, theres tonnes of small gang pvp out there. At [WOLFY] we get almost constant small gang skirmishes and we never have to run plexes regardless of what 22nd and FOOM say! Best advice to anyone in the militia's who want small gang is to look at the corps within faction war and sign up to the ones that do what you want to do.

If you start blowing up, click on a station in your overview and spam the "Warp to" button. Your pod will almost certainly make it out alive. (In a system without stations, use stargates instead.)

There's about 800-ish people online between the four militias at any given instance in time, and something on the order of 8000-ish people enrolled in FW overall, yet on a daily basis there's maybe 400 kills. I don't doubt some people are enjoying Faction Warfare and find it meets your PvP needs, but as an overall effort to facilitate constant PvP combat, Faction Warfare is a failure.

Seems there is quite a great divide here. A lot of people saying that good encounters are common, while the numbers say that most people don't get any action.

Which is why I keep referencing the faction war statistics, since if you try to go by anecdotal evidence it's just a matter of which side of the discussion is noisier.
Of course, trying to interpret statistics is easy to do wrong too. Your best bet might be to just take the fight-finding advice of the people posting in this thread and try it yourself, and draw your own opinions. It's entirely possible Smokin is right and I'm just doing it wrong.

Depends on what Faction you join. If you join Caldari, if you go for large group PVP you will find a lot of headless chickens blobing to their deaths at the hands of a Gallente fleet.
If you want to go plexing (I could only wonder why....) then your looking at a lot of people in full T2 ships with warp Stabs, so generally they could just run away at the slightest hint of trouble.
If you join Gallente you'll be in 30 man fleets almost every night and 70+ man fleets weekly on a POS op. The Federal Defense Union has a LOT of good Fleet Commanders whereas the State Protectorate seems to have none at all. And if they did i'd like to hear who they we're, as surly they must have left in an /emorage.
Don't mean to smack in local. But. you want the facts? There they are ^^^
Personally? I'm in a good FW corp. We get good fleet battle almost daily, be it small gangs consistings of Assault Frigates and intercepters, or larger gangs involving Battlecruisers, cruisers and the such.
Weekly we tend to do a large 70 man fleet on the weekends involving 30+ battleships, don't know when during the week it is, but it's pretty much a given that sometime during the week there will be a large fleet to crush something or other. And if the fleet doesn't just end up camping the Nourv (Caldari home system) gate in Tama, we crush their POSs for punishment for not coming out to play.
Though as of late the Caldari have been seeming to try and grow a pair, bringing in ECM and such to fleet battles, unfortunatly they just don't seem to have the high SP pilots that are willing to throw ships away at a moments notice like we do. Don't know exactly how thats working out though....
Also, if you havent noticed, this is the CaldarivGallente FW. The Amarr and Minmatar I have no clue on. Isn't as big of a show as this one, not to ding either sides.

Well, I'm in Gallente FW, and as far as organisation goes, there are some frustrating bits. There is very little animo to take systems from Caldari, which means Caldari now have 20 more systems than we do. Few people seem to care in the slightest. Caldari seems to be more willing to make a collective effort, which I would have liked.

Well the thing is, is that the Gallente militia has kind of (secretly) realised that it really doesn't matter who owns the system your fighting in. And as such we've stopped careing.

Been in Caldari Militia for 9 days now and have learned that Caldari militia have a few small problems,
1st spys, thiers lots of em
2nd were out numberd, HUGLY, as posted above the Gallente fleets average 30-70 and some times form up to 3 fleets were Caldari is 5-22
3rd ship types, Caldari are limited to frigs and cruisers, anything bigger and the Gallente will come looking for you because they are starved for targets in this day and age.
4th Lag, i'd like to think this is mutual, evidance proves otherwize, i'm gonna stick with coincidance atm before settleing on conspiracy.
Any atempt at making a brute force fleet is usualy met with a massive blob of heavy gear including the occasional carrier.
All this generaly forces us to use gorrila warfare tactics, this includes swinging from the plex's and throwing bannana's and feaces /join Cheeze & Whine Club

We don't plex and unless they make plexing worthwhile we will probably never plex. If that offends the way you played the game then tough!

1) and we don't have to deal with any spies at all do we?
2) Caldari have more pilots in their militia than the gallente. Is it our fault we want to pvp instead of plex?
3) Maybe if you didn;t plex all the time and put together decent fleets you might be able to fly more than stabbed up t1 cruisers.
4) Yep thats right we never get lag, its all a conspiracy against the poor caldari. Lag happens to everyone, live with it!

FW offers a target rich environment with objectives within that environment to wrangle over. It is a fantastic playground if you can take advantage of it.
Whether that translates into "FW offers good fights" or not depends very much on the individual or the corporation.
The key to solo combat in EVE is the same in any target rich environment: aggression.
FW has some advantages that other parts of EVE do not have. 1. The enemy organization is less solid than it would be in 0.0 and 2. the plexes themselves are fantastic battlegrounds.
The fact that enemies cannot warp to support their allies inside plexes makes them an excellent battleground for faster ships who want to get mostly even fights. I regularly get into interceptor fights where I am the only friendly and there are 5-10 hostiles in a plex, yet the actual fight I get into is a true inty 1v1 because of the plex mechanics and a lack of caution on the part of the other inty.
But anyhow, it depends very much whether you personally are willing to be agressive enough to take advantage of the opportunity FW gives you. If you are not agressive about it, then you are the target of those who are agressive and it is likely that FW is going to be an annoying place for you. It is important to be the hunter, rather than the hunted.
And after you get into enough fights, then you begin to get an instinct for those fights and increasingly will start winning them or immediately avoiding the fights you know you cannot win.

You should see being outnumbered in the OMS/Tama fights as a good thing. It means that Caldari pilots are wising up to the fact that blob on blob fights are laggy and not fun, so their going elsewhere to find PvP.
Oh, and can we please lose the smacktalk about plexing, this is not CAOD lite. You don't like plexing, you get fights. I like plexing, I get fights. Thats all that needs to be said, tbh.

**Sorry need to hijack this thread**
Honestly, this is great! Some one in the 22nd pointed me to this post a little steamed about some of the posts from the Ladys and asked me why I wasn't mad as well.
Simply put, I love PR and I don't care whether it's good or bad. You're talking about us. Every time you say "22nd", you basically send me 3 more recruits. Keep it up Ferris' Buellers.
So whatever you think you're doing by carrying on this crusade that we only plex, (which your guys know is not true) or plexing isn't something you need to concern yourself with, only makes me laugh harder.
Let me fill you in on a little something. While we've been plexing AND PVP'ing in Verge Vendor, you want to know who has noticed? CCP.
Now when the company that makes the game, includes stories of your accomplishments into part of the game lore for role players... Well quite frankly... We win.
Caldari offensive could Starve VV Prices rise because of war in VV
As always much respect to FOOM, also pilots like Loren Gallen, Val Erian and the like. Who know FW is won in a multi-tiered game where plexing, PvP, solo, small gangs, blobs & cap ships all have a part.
Anyone who says their favorite part of the game mechanic is the only one that matters is just telling you openly they've quit trying to win at the part you're kicking their arse in?
