I'm at a point where I want to start running lvl 4s, and I can afford one of these. However I just can't seem to decide which. At this point they cost about the same and they both look like really good ships.
Both my torp and large energy skills are a bit low. My overall gunnery is about 2x higher than my missile skills though.
So what are the pros and cons of these ships?

If you've never ran a level 4 before I suggest you start with something much cheaper. This way if you screw up you wont lose a Bil+.
Once you get more comfortable with the level 4s you're running and are using Eve-survival guide constantly then move on up.
Personally I've only used the Torp Golem and I love it. Never used the Nightmare.

So maybe try a navy raven first?

Try a NORMAL raven. Yes, you do less DPS, but it means you can lose a couple while you learn the tactics of running L4s, and then have some capital left for when you do want to upgrade. If you can complete L4s solo in a raven (especially the harder ones, such as Blockade and Worlds Collide), you can complete L4's in a CNR/Golem/Nightmare, since they have similar/better tanks with better gank. (Note: The Nightmare is only really useful for Sansha/Blood/Drone missions, where it's high EM/thermal damage is put to best use. It will suffer versus Angels) --- Sig Starts Here --- Lord Haur - Imperial Academy Logistical Support

Or Apoc what ever you like more(Turrets or Missles). Even if the Abaddon is the more efficend(ganky) Ship in the end, I would not advise to start L4 with it in the first place since it isnŠt this forgivealbe like the Apoc is. ---- Nerf Tank - Boost Gank!

Nightmare needs a lot of skills to make it godlike. Dont jump into one right away, to start with get yourself an apoc/abaddon. It might also be worth your time to look into a paladin. The nightmare will get a tank + spank while the pala get the same spank, less tank but 40k tractors.
Pala takes less time to train and is cheaper than a nightmare too. But having said that, there is nothing more bling than a nightmare for mission running

Edited by: Hirana Yoshida on 14/02/2009 22:45:45 Easy enough query on paper
Both Golem and Nightmare makes excellent missions ships, extreme damage/range/tank on both of them.
Before deciding you need to answer this: Who are you going to run missions for?
If the answer is any of Amarr corporations, the Nightmare is unsurpassed as most enemies will be Sansha/Blood.
If any other corporation, the Golem will probably do better as the amount of Angel/Guristas/Serpentis rats increase significantly making lasers less effective.
See? Easy peasy.
PS: Even with low weapon skills they are both far better than CNR's. Get one and tank it heavily while training weapon skills and increase gank as skill increase.

Big Golem advantage as well is being able to fit torps + range rigs + tank, which can't effectively be done on normal raven or CNR
I do not see why man should not be just as cruel as nature. |

I've searched but either I'm not doing it well or (less likely) there's not many out there.
Can someone please link me to some good mission-running Golem setups? It's going to be a few months before my skills get there but I like to prepare early and all.
Thanks.

With a new update coming early March, any advice now could be obsolete in "a few months".
http://eve-survival.org/wikka.php?wakka=MissionReports is your friend for lvl4s. i check even missions i know.
On the original q: Golem vs Nightmare for missions i'd say Golem. More adaptable damage-vise.
Personally i do lvl4s and i fly a Machariel. Lucius Rex

I think a good option, is spending 1/4 of the isk on 4 ravens, set each one up with rigs for specif damage types ao u can cover all missions with a decent tank. If u losse one ship meh, youll have insurace + ur 3 other bs. If u get disconected, u mess up or u get it wrong learning lev4.s that nice ship will die and then ur stuck unless u have another bill floating about

You can swap all sorts of things in the midslots and still kick ass.
The point is with those implants and rigs you can lob T1 torps to like 35km, Javelins to ~60km. You can crank up the tank to handle AE bonus room WITH an afterburner to get in range of 50km orbiters with T1 torps, or throw on a cap injector for an OMGtank.
