Well the player driven economy arguably is the most unique thing Eve has, so its no small thing to hurt. Take the economy away and Eve becomes far less interesting and probably would not last very long.

Actually, part of the credit goes to CCP for allowing the community to scam and kill each other, our corporations and alliances. Their hands off approach has fostered a great community. Although at this moment i think they might regret that. :)

Ive played on servers in other games where logoff to save your character from death was a bannable offence. And the rule was enforced too. The death system was very harsh in that game too. I think its the only real answer to that kind of behaviour.
