I recently made the transition you're referring to about a week ago. I was also using the thrasher to blow through and salvage lvl 1 missions. Once you're able to jump into the rupture I'd recommend starting lvl 2 missions and using your thrasher ...

Thanks for the replies everyone. Sounds like the best thing to do is stick with the lower missions while training for more options. I'm certainly not trying to rush along but these lvl 1 missions are just about enough to put you to sleep.
