As ralitge said, few ships of this size can have the survivability of the Ferox. Some peole have managed to get over 11k shield hitpoints on the thing with insane resists.

I honestly have no problem with the "bore" of the projectiles in this game. Think of it this way. A Dominix is twice as tall as the Empire State building. Now think of large railguns in relation to that size, 425mm rounds doesn't seem so unfeasibl...
