I believe you need at least a GeForce FX / Geforce 6 for shader 2, so no.

From wikipedia here
Some entry-level video cards supporting pixel shaders are considered affordable. As a result, replacing an unsupported card with a newer one is not only viable, but may also be more desirable than using workarounds.
Get another card. There were AGP cards dirt cheap that would work. Probably a total of $30 + shipping? Newegg is your friend.

Name one game today that will run on an 8 year old card that is still mainstream today! Considering that, CCP has gone above and beyond by supporting the classic client for as long as they did. I've seen computers at the gargabe dump that support SM2! Go cash your welfare check and buy a new video card.
Counterstrike, teamfortress, infantry, quake 3, battlefield 1942 ..... another good mention is World of warcraft, 8 million players or something, yes?

I'd like to point out that this isn't just a matter of buying a new card for Ç30 for anyone who's been running this on a laptop, such as me. I've only just started playing but I think I'm now going to have to stop, since I can't afford to pay Ç500 or more for a new system. And I'm reasonably certain that I'm not the only person who isn't hardcore enough about eve to not read the forums regularly. I for one haven't seen anything about this update axing support for low specs until yesterday.

Ok, people. There is another solution. There are SM2.0 (and even sm3.0) emulation programs floating around the net to allow you to run things like Oblivion on a geforce2.
Google away and have fun spending tens of hours to save begging for a free, obsolete graphics card which WILL run eve on craigslist or similar.
I've recycled computers more than capable of the task years ago. If you get lucky someone will take pity and donate their ancient PC to you to avoid hauling it to a recycling center.

People need to remember that although it is CCP's way forward to drop support for the lower end clients doing so is going to affect a lot of players & with the current $$$ issues around the world not many of those are going to be able to run out and spend $$$$ on a card to play a game they have already paid to play.
I think CCP may be taking a big gamble in the dropping of the classic client for the re-launch of a retail version/expansion, & that it is very possible they may end up loosing more players than they gain with this new direction.
I guess they have probably considered what they will be able to do if the dropping of the classic client causes the loss of too many paying accounts (won't say customers cause some have multiple accounts) & whether it would then be too late to get those players back is another thing.
There are a few other space based Genre MMO's coming soon so maybe they will support the lower end cards....
If you wander around in 0.0 or Lowsec with no idea you WILL end up dead! and whinging about it on the forums will get u nowhere! |

If that is indeed the specs for the new client, then thats bugger all. I have an 8 year old computer that is close to that (It only has 1gig HDD and the RAM was upgraded from 64mb to 1gig somewhere along the line), so unless your living in a cave there should be no complaints! O_o
also, bout 4 or 5 years ago iirc a Geforce 6600 was about ú40~50

i hope to hell and back your taking the ****, but if your not then no it wont.
ATI do a good line in cheap cards that support AGP connections
also the Nvidia 6 and 7 range of GeForce cards are ok. there not amazing but there cheaper than a 9900 and they fit in to an AGP slot on an onld mother board.

All of the initial FPS games you mentioned are as old as the hardware you're talking about. Simply because they have withstood the test of time well does not mean they are comparable to modern mainstream releases. I played Warcraft for several years and if Blizzard had released expansions like the ones CCP do, then I would probably have no reason to visit this board.

I think that with the dropping of the classic client CCP are also going to be dropping a lot of accounts from players that just don't have the money to have the latest machine or whatever.
I am lucky in that at the very worst if things are nothing but laggy & 3 FPS I only have to put up with it for 20 days until the game time runs out then I will just go play something else (easy come easy go as far as I am concerned)
It's the players that have multiple months left on their game time that can no longer play or even login to the game that I feel sorry for & am wondering whether they will be given their money back & their accounts cancelled or what.
I wonder just how many players will no longer be able to play EVE after this patch & whether it will be enough to make CCP sit up and maybe reconsider the dropping of the lower end support. (It's not just lower end either, I found the classic client ran better/smoother when there was a lot going on around the grid & I know a lot of people that take part in the bigger fleet battles liked it for the same reason).
Time moves on I guess and a new El-Cheapo GeFroce FX5 series card will only cost $30 or less.. It's just a shame.......
Shader model 2.0 isn't the latest machine, it's a 5-year old machine. Hell you can buy a brand new pc for $2-300 that will easily run eve premium on max settings flawlessly. And as for players with multiple months left on their accounts, there's no excuse for not knowing, CCP has released Many news postings/dev blogs etc and even press releases which were covered on independant news sites. CCP is not responsible if people put blinders on and don't pay attention to widely available information.
I also believe they had stated that only a very small percentage of the playerbase had cards that weren't capable of sm2.0 and of those an even smaller percentage would be unable or unwilling to upgrade if necessary, so the actual number of effected players will be fairly small and likely quickly replaced by the new players coming in with the new boxed version.

Computer Cheapness There are plenty of video cards there for under 2 or 3 months of Eve time, take a 2 or 3 month break and then you can afford a video card. If you pay to play the game then you should be able to afford new equipment at some point. You expect a car to last you a lifetime? house? dog? cat? Too bad we can't download new ones of those eh?
The fact that your even still playing on something that old is beyond me, get a new card, it'll be like a new game for you, twice! :P

No one said the games mentioned had to be new. It's obvious they're not SM4.0 games.
edit: SM3.0 can run roughly double the instructions of SM2.0; its awfully slow compared sadly.

If you would like to be left in the dust with those games then so be it. Go play them. By the way, counter strike Source, the newer one, has replaced the original for all but the poorest players.
http://unity3d.com/webplayer/hwstats/pages/web-2008Q3-shadergen.html looks like about 2% of the people that play games use SM1 still. SM1 is the 8 track of computer gaming.

Sorry to hear you have outdated hardware, everyone who has any background in computers knows the minute you buy hardware its outdated the next day. It is an ongoing process like eating or going to work and paying taxes. If you are unable to afford the next gen or something compatible I suggest you find a different hobbie. Even my highend machine is outdated but I will be playing for a few more years hopefully.
When and if my system does not meet the requirments to run a game, I will not point blame towards the game makers but only come to the conclusion I need to update or stop playing
