Even if they can't just buy a new graphics card because of AGP/PCX incompatibilities... a new MB, some RAM plus that new SM 2.0 card wont cost more than a 100 Ç or so nowadays.
And if you can't afford that, you might want to think about your priorities in life and earn some money instead of playing MMOs...

Because everyone can just splash out for a new computer every time they update shader models. While the card is indeed, a piece of history, buying a whole new machine is a rather large undertaking for the uninitiated.

I think that with the dropping of the classic client CCP are also going to be dropping a lot of accounts from players that just don't have the money to have the latest machine or whatever.
I am lucky in that at the very worst if things are nothing but laggy & 3 FPS I only have to put up with it for 20 days until the game time runs out then I will just go play something else (easy come easy go as far as I am concerned)
It's the players that have multiple months left on their game time that can no longer play or even login to the game that I feel sorry for & am wondering whether they will be given their money back & their accounts cancelled or what.
I wonder just how many players will no longer be able to play EVE after this patch & whether it will be enough to make CCP sit up and maybe reconsider the dropping of the lower end support. (It's not just lower end either, I found the classic client ran better/smoother when there was a lot going on around the grid & I know a lot of people that take part in the bigger fleet battles liked it for the same reason).
Time moves on I guess and a new El-Cheapo GeFroce FX5 series card will only cost $30 or less.. It's just a shame.......

Edited by: Korcahn on 10/03/2009 15:20:31 I have a high end card - but the OP seemed to indicate they'd have to buy one to keep playing.
Also, I think the issue is the OP has no AGP slot - a common problem on cheap HP/Dell machines. ___________________________________

You jsut cant expect old technology to be supported forever.
At some point you have to upgrade your equipment.

even the dev blogs that were posted on the front page had information related to the loss of Shader 1.0 and that the classic client was going the way of the dodo..
I couldn't remember the shader version my laptop was capable of so i wrote a little application in C# using the XNA Game pack from MS to check.. And supposedly it does, but since I play with my desktop for the most part since the laptop is a little dated, I don't play on it much anymore (laptop is 4 years old now). ---------- Havand |

Apart from the fact that CCP did tell everyone and there were forum threads about it, you could not miss. Did you ever think about using the testserver ? But what for ? If CCP would change anything they would make a big event in game with alarm sounds and big warnings in form of words flying around in space for players like you so you would not miss it right ?

I patched just fine. I just hope in the future they don't scale the minimum requirements up so high that my laptop (with onboard video) can't support the game. I usually don't play seriously on my laptop, but I'd hate to lose the ability to trade/travel on it.

Best to go mid range or high end. never buy low.
Low end cards area waste of money
I personally think it's a total waste to buy 'flagship' cards/boards. A few months after you've payed double the price, it'll just end up as a 'slightly better than average' piece of hardware and despite paying a lot more for it, you'll likely have to upgrade at a very similar time as someone who bought the mid-range version.

The majority of people that shader model 1 loss affected, are people that don't understand the significance of it; CCP explained it poorly to them.
What they should have done is added a message on logon for users with non-sm2 cards telling them the apoc update would not allow them to play.

Meqander, you wil just have to try it.
probably no issue, but there is no telling how your equipment will handle a massive update like this.

Yeah, your right.
Thats why I suggested Mid range... high if you must have the latest and have the money to throw away.
Id never buy a low end card tho.

I have a 9600 in my closet that's been unused since 2005 or so. Your hardware was low end in 2001 and utterly obsolete by 2003.
There are MMOs whose graphics have not been updated since around that time (cough Anarchy Online cough) and will run on a cardboard box a real computer comes in. However, they look like Halflife 1 if they're lucky, and have an ever shrinking user base.
I for one am glad CCP updates the graphics, the engine and maintains their game. I don't want to switch to a new one, this one is fine for me. Demanding user have a graphics card made in this millenium is rational and good.
Oh, and on topic: finally got patched by downloading the _m link. Nice that it's an exe of the two needed files, since the autopatcher pops up a dialog box at the end asking if I want to delete the .rtp file and steals focus long enough to accept a default of "yes."

i am afraid no is the answer mate, its a SM1.0 or below card. you are looking for a card were the shader model or (PS) colom read 1.0 or above.
sorry to break it to you bro, hope you can afford the upgrade, and for what its worth, EvE looks awsome on even a SEMI new card. hope you can go shopping bro.

Honestly, if you play EVE enough to be that upset about having to upgrade a computer then you should go get a job and get off your ass that is rolling off the chair and make 40 bucks to buy a new card. And for AGP and PCI users out there:
AGP List on Newegg
PCI
It was on the forums. CCP told you. Stop whining that CCP is making you upgrade. Honestly, what was the last game to come out that support SM 1.0? Go play WoW on low.

by discontinuing SM1 CCP is probably killing many players with 5 accounts on crappy puters that do nothing but run macro miners anyway.
Name one game today that will run on an 8 year old card that is still mainstream today! Considering that, CCP has gone above and beyond by supporting the classic client for as long as they did. I've seen computers at the gargabe dump that support SM2! Go cash your welfare check and buy a new video card.
