Don't know, but at the moment things seems stable.
By putting the audio=0 switch into the prefs.ini file on one of my installs has so far allowed me to run two clients Eve in normal mode, using SP2 and DX9c (thats a given since SP2, huh)and all latest drivers, without problem for the last 24 hours.
Things are looking hopefull I think.
And, would firmly point in the direction of the audio drivers +- Eve +- SP2 interaction as the source of all this.
Just hope someone at EVe/Creative tech support actually does something about it.

Right.
Got a reply from MS. They've had a look at the debug files, and as best as they can tell at this stage, it would appear to be related to the audio drivers.
They havn't looked very deeply into this, as quite frankly it's not their problem, but at least it is *some* degree of progress.
So, that leaves CCP and Creative yet to get back with anything meaningfull helpful on this issue.
So far no word from creative at all, and I've not heard back from CCP tech support since I gave them the debug file results.
Personally, I'm amazed to have gotten a meaningfull, insightful, and helpful response from MS so quickly - less than 24 hours!
If anyone has any info from CCP or Creative regarding this specific issue, would be extremely greatful if you could post it here.

Im here to add some detail.
I've had the problem with Eve prior to SP2 but after DX 9.0c. I've got an Audigy with the latest drivers. I think the dog lies buried in DX 9.0c and Creatives POS-drivers (they have ALWAYS made crap drivers).
. . . Awaiting more and hi-bit rate music - with bated breath ... |

Have a bit of info to add:
Knocking Audigy hardware acceleration down one notch has removed the many eve crashes I experienced. I still suspect DirectX 9.0c as playing apart, apart from the obvious fact that creative wouldn't know a properly designed sound card even if it came up and offered itself to them for free.

Thanks for the info Sister!
I'm currently in New York, so can't follow your advice to check it at the moment.
Still waiting on a response from Creative regarding this issue, but I can say that MS believe it to be an issue with the creative drivers, and put it down to tighter programming in SP2 (or DX9c)highlighting errors in the Creative driver coding and so stopping at them, where as under SP1/DX9b these were ignored or un-noticed.
As I said, Creative have said nothing. Hopefully CCP can persuade them to take a look at this, if CCP can verify for themselves that this is an issue, and the source lies with the Creative Drivers.
Whilst I believe we need info on workarounds in order to be able to play the game at the moment, I absolutely believe that we should be pushing for a solution to this issue, as why should we have to handicap our expensive hardware just to get it to play the game, when we SHOULD be able to have all the bells and whistles working. That's what we paid for after all.
And reducing hardware acceleration is essentially doing just that. ITs a troubleshooting thing to cover up sloppy programming.
Anyway, here's hoping for a solution soon-ish.

ok im having the same problem as you when I completely turned off the DEP in sp2 I could play for about 6 hours (rather than 5 mins) but it still crashes. I have just dropped the hardware acceleration down 1 notch so I will see how that gets on and I have gone back from the latest creative drivers to 5.12.2.252 so hopefully that might make a difference.
But my question is where in the perf.ini is the audio option cause I cant see it. Also I am right in thinking that people are talking about the perf.ini file that's in the cache folder. We live for the one we die for the one |

the file is called PREFS.INI, and yes, it is in the Cache folder.
You *may* need to turn off the options to hide system files (open one of your HDD's in explorer, find the settings under 'Tools', 'Folder Options', 'View', 'Hidden files and folders', and check the box for 'Show hidden files and folders', and also uncheck the setting for 'hide protected operating system files (recommended)'.
That should allow you to see the prefs.ini file in explorer so you can load it into notepad and edit it.
I also tried disabling DEP, but with no noticable benefit.
