Man I'm full of problems tonight, but this has been a problem with me for awhile.
So when the Xbox 360 first came out, I obviously bought one in the first few months. And about the beginning of this year I got my Red Ring. So I sent it in, got it fixed and it came back. And it worked fine for awhile. But then problems started coming up, first my Xbox 360 stopped connecting to Xbox Live, there was nothing I could do, I just couldn't connect, and when I did (right before I outright couldn't connect) I had the worst lag.
And then it started freezing on me, giving me the "It cannot read the disk error". And funny thing is, when it first started telling me this error, it was when I was trying to run a Demo off my HD that I downloaded a long time ago, and then a video.
And now it has gotten worse, so bad that it just Freezes right before the beginning logo can come up (when the ball turns around and says "Xbox 360") and I can't get anything past that. And I can't seem to figure out what is wrong.

In before typical "The problem is that its a 360" reply.
In reality, the 360 has a shocking failure rate. The days of consoles outlasting the TV's they're connected to are long gone. I have a friend who's been through 3 units in a year. Just from casual play.
By the sounds of it - your 360 is just bricked. If its still on the warranty, send it off for repair - otherwise put a hammer through it and buy a new one.

It got a Red Ring the day before Warranty was due to expire, so I don't have it anymore. I heard there was a shop nearby that would refurbish the 360 for less than the cost of buying a new one. I really liked the games for 360 that I couldn't get for PC (Halo 3, Halo ODST, Halo Wars, Mass Effect 2, I know I'm naming off mostly halo but ODST has been on my mind for quite some time now). So I'm wondering if that is worth it. I'm not too sure about shelling out for a new 360 just yet anyway, the games wont come out for awhile (till fall I think) and I just finished saving up the money I need to get a new computer, which I need to replace this 8 year old computer so badly. ________________________________________________

The new 360s are so much better than the old ones. I just got myself a new basic 360 when my old one got the red ring and have never had a problem with it, plus its very quiet.

Have you tried paying the labor cost and sending it away to Microsoft for repair? I got my first "Red Ring" experience not too long ago but it wasn't three segments that were lit up but rather two. This meant that a quick $100 USD fixed the problem and they sent me a new console that supposedly has a minimal "Three Segments Going Red" percentage. I have been using it quite alot recently but having a tiny house with the kitchen close to the TV has made me sacrifice CoD:WaW time for PC time. :'(

Ya basically is what this shop does, so I'm not sure to go to the shop or microsoft, because the problems started happening after I Sent it in to microsoft.

well, you'd have to ask yourself... sending it back to MS the first time, let you play on the machine for what... half a year or so? paying $100 for another few months of gaming... versus buying a new one that will probably last longer than the old machine have to date.
- Karma, surprised his own machine hasn't given up yet.

I would go to Microsoft as they send you a replacement rather then fix your Xbox360. Your fixed Xbox360 will go to the next person who sends their unit in. And so on, the cycle continues with Microsoft's great customer service and replacement. Plus, the shop which you speak of might be a legit shop which gives you a good warranty or just a fake that takes your Xbox360 and sells you a non-working one which ends up transforming into a Decepticon and killing your living room. That's just might idea though :P.

True, but I've had microsoft just take money away and not refund it before, which is why I was considering using something else to get it fixed.

I would sent it to microsoft for repair. I would guess that if you sent it in the beginning of this year it got repaired with the old style useless mo/bo and processor etc. I sent mine in a couple of months ago (in Europe), and they must have been using the new stuff by then because it is way quieter now, and thus supposedly more reliable (?)
It would only cost a few $ more though I suppose to buy a new basic Xbox and stick your old H.D. on it , and that way you get a new warranty. I dont' know if they are using the new internals across the range now, but I read on some forum a few months ago that the cheapest Xbox was the only one that would definitely have the new internals at the time (in Europe anyway).

Under European laws (if you live in an EU country) it's extended to 6 years from the original seller/shop you bought it from, although you will have to prove it was a manufactures fault and not a user one.

Edited by: KingsGambit on 04/07/2009 09:58:29 A lot of bad luck in this thread. *Knocks on wood* Thankfully my Elite hasn't had a single problem, even with my slightly ham handed (successful) attempt at opening it up for errr...small firmware alteration purposes. I've had it on for perhaps 12 hours at a time, more than once (forgot it on, left it on between playing on it, etc) and not an issue. It sounds like a banshee when the discs start spinning though, but now I worked out how to install games to the HDD thru the dashboard it's fantastic.
I know there were design faults in the earlier/earliest models but as I understand it the newer consoles (ie. last 2 years) are unlikely to suffer from those. -------------

To be fair they're looking more reliable than 360's, so far, a friend has had a hdd problem with his PS3 that couldn't be resolved so he bought a new hdd and had to start from scratch with his games.
I've got both, the 360 mainly because of friends and the PS3 was an impulse buy as I was looking for a blu ray player at the time, I like them both but prefer the PS3, taste thing more than any belief in its superiority over the 360.
Had my 360 for @ 18 months, so far no problems, mind you it doesn't get as much use as the PS3.

Well i had to have my PS3 replaced under warrenty after it developed some very odd faults like restarting the console when i quit resistance 2 after a network connection error, also it liked to crash a lot, whats more it was outside of the warrenty and they still replaced it \o/

SOE don't make the playstations nor do they deal with most of the online parts of the PSN, XBL however is a requirement to use proper online gaming which is what i disagree with, if i buy the console and the game i should be entitled to play it online without paying even more to the people who made the console.

For most tasks a Silver XBL account is good enough, and i believe all consoles (Or most?) come with a free lifetime silver account. _____________________________________ Haruhiist since December 2008

Not quite correct, everytime you make a new gamertag you are given a 1 month gold trial then a lifetime silver account.
