Edited by: Chienka on 03/07/2009 11:53:42 BBC World (on TV) just had a news article on this, with regards to the RMT of the ebank ISK.
They seemed to find it pretty amusing, but avoided mentioning the fact it was EVE.

Didn't you know? Band Of Brothers is a corporation in GoonSwarm.
As for the article, yes. It's horribly misleading and is full of technical errors, but meh.

I do wonder if it is fair for International news organizations to mention his name and location:
"The theft was carried out by EBank's chief executive, a player known as Ricdic, now known to be a 27-year-old Australian who works in the technology industry. His full identity has not been revealed save that his first name is Richard."
Maybe his intention all along was to rip off EVE citizens and he was simply role playing. The BBC article might cause people to question his morals and trustworthiness.
He must of known CCP would track the isk. The person that paid cash would of lost the isk once CCP followed the trail. So someone is now out of pocket by approx 5000 USD. If his current or prospective employers found out about this incident, I wonder what they would think of him. He seems fairly happy to talk to the media and seems quite boastful about the whole event, so its highly likely they know.

Tell them what?
You can buy GTCs for real dollars and exchange them for ISK via the forums or the in-game market.
They just left out the GTC part since nobody cares how the transaction-flow is, only that CCP condones buying ISK with RL money is important.

CCP does not condone buying isk with real money, the transaction flow is important. Selling GTC does not equal buying isk.
You cannot buy "kredits with real dollars" as the article suggested. You can buy GTC with real dollars which you can exchange with other players for isk. The difference is significant.
CCP makes no additional money from GTC sales that are converted to isk, if you consider that the buyer of the GTC would have to pay the subscription fee if they could not pay with isk. Net profit for CCP remains the same and it has no negative effect on the EVE economy, unlike illegally trading isk for real cash from farmers.

Yes, I have noticed it comes from Reuters (it mentions it at the beginning of the article). I just never imagined I would be reading about EVE Online among the swine flu news and other local political stuff on a local news site - so it still surprised me a bit. _______________________________________________ The ShadowMaster -
