Changing the time update interval has made a huge improvement.
The bug now hits maybe once in a 6 hour period, I'm hoping that altering the interval between updates to 15 minutes will cure it completely for me.

clock thingy fixed it for me :)
i update time every 20 minutes and get a 1-2 second skip instead of a full minute skip every 6 hrs.
Played for a week with these settings and all is gud.

Asus board with nvidia chipset, win2000, Windows timeservice disabled, still get the bug. when in space the screen begins to jitter, when in station the screen goes black
there were days, when i could tell when it will happen...exactly every 54 minutes. but now there are days it doesn't happen at all. when i did a fresh install of w2k (harddrive failure), i had a full month of bugfree gameplay...now it's back.

Edited by: TWD on 10/10/2004 00:56:51 \o/ for tip on setting the windows time update frequency to 15 mins.
seems solved for me.
still a fix is better than a work-a-round. |

I have this as well and I noticed its worse when your scanner is up. Try warping a few times with your scanner closed and see how it works. I dont think the game can update the changing distances on the scanner fast enuff and you freeze while it updates.

i have 2 computers i run eve on: #1 2x amd 2000mp(tyan tiger mpx s266n-4m mobo) 512mb ddr ati radeon 9600 xt(128mb) (eve dosnt seem to like dual cpus, i usually get a bsod within an hour if i forget to limit eve to cpu 0, limiting eve to cpu 1 can almost garantee a bsod within 15 minutes)
#2 amd 1700xp(a7n266-vm nforce 2 mobo) 512mb ddr geforce 4 TI 4200(128mb)
i get the stutter thing with both, although #2 a lot more often then #1, and surprisingly, i almost never see it if i dont have the autoscanner up...
hope that helps :)

That is one very interesting but lengthy thread with a lot of info and cross references. I have spend the last hour reading it completely including all references and will try to sum up the infos for the people who dont have the time to read everything there.
At first the solution which seems to work around this problem: http://www.softdevlabs.com/ClockMon/ClockMon.html
Optionally you may want to use the windows time service to update with a clockserver just in case your realtime clock doesnt give consistent values all the time: http://www.tunexp.com/tips/security_and_maintenance/changing_the_internet_time_update_synchronisation/
However - some people claimed that using the windows time service can lead to time differences itself while others say that it was a problem which was fixed for winxp. Decide for yourself if you want to use it.
Now for the (additional) Infos of interest: - nforce2 problem independant on motherboard manufacturer - problem doesnt seem to occur in win98/winme/linux - problem occurs in winxp and win2000 (pro?) - problem occurs independantly if your computer runs a lot programs or is idle for hours - appears on computers connected to the internet and those which arent - can be hard to verify - it can disappear for a while and re-appear after days - some people claim that the problem doesnt exist with v1.04 boards with pre-1004 bios while it consistently appears on v2.0 boards - the problem "seems" to be related to FSB speed, some say at 133 mhz it isnt existing, at 140, 141, 142 it instantly appears, at 143 it doesnt, at 100mhz FSB it never appears, at 166mhz it regularly appears, at 200mhz it appears. the FSB definately seems to influence it. - some people claim that setting "spread spectrum" in the bios to 'disabled' will fix it (http://forums.pcper.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=239397 and http://www.nforcershq.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=19631&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=104 top posting) while others say it didnt fix it or they always had it disabled. - some people claim that changing the configuration from uniprocessor PC to ACPI PC, disabling the ACPI and then re-detecting all devices fixes the problem. Other people say it didnt fix it for them and this "fix" can lead to a lot of hardware configuration problems and slow down your computer - so dont do it unless you are desperate and absolutely know what you do!

ive posted to many threads about this in patch review forum ive lost count.
as DC says, its happened for a long time, and I once thought it to be packet loss from the server and was blaming CCP.
I too have an A7N8X mobo.
Next time this happens to you: Turn off the PC, wait 2 minutes, turn the PC back on, launch Eve. It works 95% of the time for me.

Let me guess, your using a linksys router... I had the same problem for ages, made me buy a new router when i figured out that was the problem. Timekeeper lost a thron to a celest gank fest even though he had 2mwd, HIS LINKSYS ROUTER would drop packets upon activating mwd, giving him the "gray screen of death", while mine would randomly just completely freeze. So yeah, try different network equipment, if it's not a linksys router then try another type anyway, and mabye a different cable or dsl modem or whatever you have.
