OH THANK GOODNESS YES! Less metagaming FTW.
Aw, sorry bro. I guess you'll have to deal with the "metagaming" of someone knowing when it's possible to find you for a while longer.
I sure hope you don't "metagame" yourself offline when you're done at the end of the the day. That would be cheap.

When I log in and 30+ targeted mission runners log out within 2-3 minutes, it's a problem. If this goes through, plus the removal of local I can see a new golden age of PVP dawning. Too bad that if it ever happens 95% of the 0.0 peeps will flee to highsec.

Simplicity--the art of maximizing the amount of work not done--is essential. (third line from the bottom)
Uh... is it supposed to say that?
Yes, but here's how it should be understood:
"If the task can be accomplished in a way that requires less work than the chosen solution, that solution is preferred"
In other words, if you have defined your problem precisely, doing extra work is waste.

No offense but what an aweful choice of name:
COSMOS historically is a total fail area of EVE, with unique missions that were implemented and forgotten about.
COSMOS "Mini-Professions" that never really got past adding an exploration complex or two (literally) plus a module.
Unique and mostly useless (sub Tech 2), expensive to build, COSMOS items that only now after years of being forgotten are finally sellable/searchable on contracts.
An unwise choice of name if you expect to whip up excitement for what sounds like an (unnecessary IMHO) Facebook/Social networking page for Eve.

I don't post a lot but how can things improve unless the community is involved. This looks dumb, so I hope it pans out for you guys. I just wonder if the community feels strongly about this flopping, wouldn't allocating these resources elsewhere be more beneficial to the game? You guys have plenty of issues to fix and half-a**ing the "new content" never goes over well. ================================================ 00:59:14 Notify The Guardian Veteran is too far away, you need to be within 48400.0 meters of it but are actually 57737.3598289 meters away.

I hope this provides some tools for corp management. Some way of organising notes on members out of game, and allowing directors to search through them.
Also, some way of seeing members skills would be nice and in some way linking them to set skill plans, to see who can fly what ships, or whether new members have trained learnings up or not (ineve is a bit inadiquate, and I don't like having everyone in EVEmon).
All this on an external web page would be really really nice, here's to hoping COSMOS provides a small portion of this.

A very poor choice of Name. I doubt that EVE really needs to go Facebook-ish.
Also the whole name is fail, since the original COSMOS Feature is broken since its release and has been abandoned long ago. Now a lot of people just got reminded of that.

Depending on what there doing with this depends on how useful it will be...if its a out of game Facebook as some people have suggested we don't need it...if however it gives me a way to contact people in game without being in game that would be awesome. I'm a gamer when I'm not working I don't always play eve but if people could give me a yell when stuff was happening or a mission was being run I'd happy log in...so this might be good...seems a funny choice of name though

Working as intended IMO, since I dont really need WiS.
If Cosmos gives us better tools for corp organization and communications, that is a far better tool and far more needed than any avatar butt swinging in a station has ever been. --

This will be more than just "Facebook in space," if what I have heard about is true. For example, an integrated calendar for event planning. I don't know about you, but that would be incredibly awesome for me. Perhaps we will also see integrated corporation announcements (both public and private) / blog system. Maybe this will also finally cure the very limited biography space that the serious role players have been complaining about for a long time.
Don't be so negative, give it a chance. It may end up being a really cool feature. If it ends up being really crappy, then you can bash it as much as you'd like.

Edited by: CCP Caedmon on 21/07/2009 22:12:52 IÆve done my best to answer as many of your questions as I can below. As I said in the blog, this was only the first of many. We plan to release a new blog every couple of weeks and will give more details of new features and future plans as we go. Watch this space!
Will we have mail-list functionality in an early release? The mail system we are designing will be more in line with the mail clients we all use out of game. We want to reproduce as much of their functions and flexibility as is useful in-game. The old in-game mail has served us well, but the world has moved on and itÆs time for an update. There will be more details on the new mail system in an upcoming devblog.
Why call it COSMOS? Thanks for all the feedback on the name. We agree that this might be confusing and for now COSMOS is a working title only. We may change it if we can think of anything better (suggestions, anyone?) or we may choose to keep it. CCPOveur really loves the name. He also feels that any confusion will quickly disappear post-release as this is such a different part of the game and if all goes to plan it will have a much higher profile than the feature that is currently known as COSMOS.
COSMOS and the API? We are already thinking how best to get COSMOS features into the API. We want to give you guys the tools to continue to do all the cool stuff you do with EVE data. As always it is a question of priorities, but it makes sense to get as much as possible into the API as soon as possible. Otherwise, as CCPExplorer says, ôlife will find a wayö and you guys will get the data you want by other means.
Skill Management in COSMOS? This is planned for a later release of COSMOS, i.e. after Winter 2009.
Two-way Friends list CCPGangleri already covered this but to reiterate - the two-way friends system builds on the system we already have in place. You will still be able to see whether people are online without their knowledge or agreement. Two-way friendship will allow you to control access to your information and content on COSMOS. Also the Game Designers are already foaming at the mouth at the thought of the future gameplay possibilities.
Chat Client Out of game text and voice chat are both on the roadmap for later releases of COSMOS, i.e. after Winter 2009.
iPhone Apps There are currently no firm plans to release a CCP-made iPhone App. This is in no way connected to iPhone envy induced by AppleÆs decision not to launch the Jesus-phone here in Iceland. There are some player-made apps out there though.
Further Features COSMOS will be an integrated part of the game, so we feel that when you change your market orders, contracts, skills or corp/alliance membership in COSMOS you are playing EVE just as much as if you were logged into the client.
The first release of COSMOS will be Winter 2009. We wonÆt see anything on TQ before then. We are planning to get changes onto Singularity as soon as they are ready for public testing.
New forums are high on our priority list. They may come in Winter 2009, if not, expect to see them soon after. As this will be solely web-based, we should not need to wait for a scheduled TQ expansion.
Profile and Content Privacy We want to give you ultimate control over who sees your profile data and other content. We are implementing a privacy system across all COSMOS features to let you do that. Viewing nearly all content will require log-in. Public forums will be a likely exception to this.
In-Game Browser We do have plans to upgrade the in-game browser for the Winter 2009 release. Indeed, a lot of what we want to do with COSMOS depends on it. One of the other Scrum teams is working on it and there should be a devblog coming soon with more details.

If this is Evemail v2 then please grab all the developers from all the teams and throw them on this for a week.
Fast, easy communication is massively important. It is cricical to creating room for eve to grow.
Currently the evemail system has the market, producers, organisers and everyone ham-strung.

Could we please have some sort of Webalizer statistics type app for this? Instead of people//locations of the internet you would have people/systems/regions/items/markets in EVE.
ALSO! Please make an official integrated wikified Killboard.
edit;
An eve 'real world' player geography map would be great for face-to-face meetups and beat-ups.

You are aware that out of game communication networks have reached a level of professionalism that you usually see in large real life corporations? I wouldn't be surprised if some corps used Lotus Notes since i heard of some using SAP.. I'd say that just about any feature in current mail and IM systems would be useful.. You'll have to put a lot of work in it though to compete with the robust and tested platform we've been building with synchronzed log-ins for jabber, forums and teamspeak. There's a good reason why no big alliance uses eve voice, so don't let that happen to COSMOS.

Wouldn't it make more sense to make COSMOS a front-end of the Api, and not the other way round?

Does this mean you'll be actually using standard protocols like IMAP/SMTP or just that we'll have a more complex internal system? Will we have APIs for it, specifically, if it's not using IMAP/SMTP?

I think I speak for most 3rd party devs when I say we feel that making the APIs available is more important than making COSMOS itself. As I said in an earlier post, with access to the right APIs you'd already have COSMOS and more. Of course, if APIs do not become available we'll simply do our own thing, but unless you let clients authenticate to COSMOS with the API, you'll have applications asking for EVE usernames/passwords to login to COSMOS and computationally click buttons. Not such a hot plan.
Will COSMOS provide any other functionality? OpenID provision, perhaps even a Jabber service that alliances could extend?

Perhaps if you tried using a browser that was compatible with the internet you'd be better off? Firefox and Opera have been around for a while, and there's now Safari and Chrome to try too.

Seems like people dont like the idea of a "facebook" site about eve.. I have to say the same thing, im disappointed. Just thinking about facebook makes me want to puke.
On the other hand, upgrading the mail and all that is communication (eve mail, mailing list, in game browse, etc...) is very welcomed to me. I for one sinserely hope that I can stay in touch with my corp members when Im not in the game...still trying to recruit and all.
But I really hope that this doesn't take more than 30% of their time so they work less on the current issues in eve. Cause I want my WiS and my manufacturing named items..>NOW.
P.S: walking in station is optional, they showed it on one of their video's, you click on an icon once your fully docked. you dont have to click on it if you dont want to. But if theres ISK to be made...Im there for sure.
p.s.s: for the dev team: didn't you agree some time ago that smaller updates is better than one big huge update ? well, return to it please cause this is not working very well. <-- (cloaking bug...lag in jita..blah blah)

Please consider using an IMAP/SMTP set up, as others have suggested. It doesn't need to send/receive mail from other servers, but using pre-existing protocols would allow everyone to use these more powerful email clients that already exist. Let's face it, you guys are known for making a good internet spaceship game, not a good e(ve)mail reader. BYO standard mail client also means all platforms get native support without any extra effort required for porting if CCP decides to provide its own desktop evemail client. And if you decide to go down the custom-API-only route, it just means everyone who cares will end up running evemail clients alongside their regular email clients anyway.
Originally by: CCP Caedmon Chat Client Out of game text and voice chat are both on the roadmap for later releases of COSMOS, i.e. after Winter 2009.
Another request to reuse an open standard, this time XMPP. Again, it doesn't need to be federated with the public XMPP network, you don't risk leaving users on any platform behind, and we don't end up having to run another application that duplicates functionality we already have built into our desktops.
Having a chat system attached to EVE with as little barrier to entry as adding another account to the chat client you are already using could also save a lot of hassle exchanging out-of-game IM details and finding out they use a network you don't have an account on. Everyone would just have addresses like "[email protected]" as their IM address. You could also use the shared roster support to automatically provide everyone with a contact list of everyone in their corp.

If you decide to use IMAP/SMTP for mail and XMPP for chat, then the iPhone (and lots of other phones) will already support your shiny new communication toys out of the box.

Have you looked into using WebKit? It's built for embedding into other programs, and it's available under a BSD-style license. Compared to the current IGB, it's standards compliant, it can render real websites people actually use, it's not horribly slow, etc...
OpenID support One further suggestion, not related to any of the other points above, is to make your new COSMOS thingy act as an OpenID provider. This will provide an alternative to the IGB's trusted headers that can actually be used to authenticate users. It could also mean that we would no longer need a giant stack of usernames and passwords for each of the EVE-related websites on the net, and sites can know that the guy registering as "Character Name" is really who they say they are.
Since OpenID authentication would mean players only ever send their password to CCP's servers, it can help avoid the security risk of players using their EVE password on a site that gets compromised, or is run by a dishonest admin.
And hey, logging onto your corp's forums by clicking a "Log in with COSMOS" button would be pretty awesome.
