That is probably what it'll come down to I assume. The troops themselves shouldn't be live, that would make things rather boring. Just drop a clone-factory to the surface as a sort of insertion pod and let them sort things out on the ground. Send in support vehicles as you are able, and have fun.

No wai ! I find it hilarious CCP think console gamers will buy into another new FPS , this time with added monthly sub , and that they think they will stay around long enough to sustain the game.

There's no doubt that the biggest and safest market opportunity for CCP is this EVE Online community - they are the most likely to buy a new EVE related game. However, forcing them to use a console will cut significantly into number of people willing to buy this product.
CCP may be trying to target new audiences, completely new people, even tho that would bring less money in short term.
Still, they should have at least supported PC audience.

Edited by: EX Cmd on 18/08/2009 20:40:28 I have been wanting RTS and FPS element in eve online, but not like this. I wanted them as part of the mmo that we already play as one game. I really hope that FPS and RTS elements are incorporated into EVE Online on the PC in the future. I definitely will NOT buy this game because it's on a console and not fully part of EVE Online. I would be willing to buy it if it was released for the PC as an EVE Online expansion (fully integrated into the current game) that I had to pay for. The wait continues .

If this game is what it promises, it offers something no other FPS game has: consequences. Seeing your clan not just ruling some stats, but actually taking territory, and being respected on message boards for accomplishments - that's something that has to appeal. I'm not an FPS gamer, but I have to think that consequences and a political map has a lot of appeal, just as that had enough appeal to me to get me into this here spaceship game.

Actually, while that is a nice idea and many people even fear it to be true, I seriously doubt that CCP would allow FPS gamers to have any control over 0.0 sov - or even interfere with 0.0 alliances in any meaningful way.
You only have to look at CCP's implementation of Faction Warfare to understand what I mean. This new FPS thing is going to be very similar - there will be new goals and objects, but they will have 0 impact on actual game world. Nothing in FW really matters - no real system sec changes, no station take overs, absolutely no impact on anyone not wanting to participate.
If CCP was too afraid to have consequences for FW, what makes people seriously believe they will be different for something even bigger and more important - such as 0.0 sov?
No, for better or worse, we will not see planet-side FPS have deciding factor in 0.0 sov or alliance 0.0 warfare.

If it does look like that when it comes out, I know there's a shooter I may just play more than Bad Company 2.
Edit: Plus, EVE realised and shown from ground-level is definitely, definitely welcome.

If WiS is the pc version of Dust ie we cant fps but we can command etc in conjunction with the usual eve space fleet battles it will be epic.
I expect there will be a pc port of the fps eventually, but dont panic, ccp is already in bed with microsoft and co.
I also think CCP rightly predicts that the vast majority of eve players wont give two hoots about fps combat but will instead be creaming their pants over the command and logisitcal potential of WiS/Dust.
Being able to perform battlefield support roles and what have you would be awesome, but I can see a WiS that is primarily as planned, originally, just less vague and evidently aimed at being a top tier of Dust's more blood n guts actioneering.
I think, this is sincerely, the single most ambitious project ever created in persietant worlds. I'm really, truly, excited.
Bravo CCP!
I hope it works. I really do.

It says "Intaki system" in the lower left corner in the beginning of the trailer. A 0.1 system. So propably only low sec. Maybe this will be the change of low sec that the forums have been screaming for?

ok this would be nice, but still: low sec does not have any sov mechanics

Dear CCP
I know its been said already, i know you probably wont read or respond to this, but i gotta say my piece regardless: Making a console only game, tied into eve, is the DUMBEST most self defeating move since Blizzard excluded LAN games from Starcraft II. Honestly it may even top that "foot, meet shotgun" moment
Consoles offer sleek, stilyzed self contained experiences, even the ones that make heavy use of community. They are like movies really, you watch it, watch it again with friends and then head off towards the next blockbuster. You are targeting a demographic with a very short attention span, be they old or young, they are all console-gamers. The game format is contained in the device itself: compact, standalone, complete. The DUST'ers will never truely get involved with the scope of things, and so they'll move on, eventually they will. If you do this i guarentee you that in 5 years, eve will be live and kicking, and DUST514 will be one of those half rumors the old hands throw around at the gatecamp.
And that dosent even take into account how utterly crappy a gamepad is for FPS and RTS games. Infact you'd be hard pressed to find worse genres to shoohorn into a console.
Nice looking game CCP, really. Very very nice, but a wasted effort, doomed to obscurity at birth, forgotten by the next E3.
There, thats my complaint, all done.
P.S. Why in the name if all that is holy didn't you integrate this into the client or release it to PC. We'd pay extra you know we would, you JUST went over all the RMT stuff, i can't even imagine the actual rl currency involved in those numbers. You KNOW we'd pay. so whywhywhywhywhy

The way i see the planetary combat easily integrating into the eve universe in real time would be with planetary bombardment.
Make it so that a friendly sieged dreadnought near your planet = you can call an orbital strike.
That's the simplest way to do it, anyway.

I rather imagine that to be able to bring DUST troops into the Sov fight for a planet, you will need to have a POS on at least one of the moons of that planet.
This would mean that your combat prowess in EVE would determine whether or not DUST troops even enter into the Sov equation.
It is also quite possible that you own can have a POS at the majority of the moons at a contested planet, but still loose control of the planet (and its accompanying Sov) if your opponent makes the DUST contract lucurative enough, or has their own group of skilled DUST players dedicated to the task, or simply supplies them with more and better equipment than you do... bringing about the defeat of your own ground based forces there.
The average rank and file DUST player could possibly care less, if he is just there for the in-your-face combat.

K: But this won't enable one to watch fights in DUST from within Eve and the other way? CCP: No. In the PC game you will make offers to DUST marines. This group of mercenaries, will be in the center of DUST. The marines accept the mission, if the conditions are right and the result will be sent back and influences the gameplay of the PC game. But there won't be a Spectator camera or similar things.

To quote from the video: "and DUST will become One of those inputs". As hilmar says it, there will be other ways to influence sov as well. I think all the panic about console gamers controling the sov in 0.0 is a tad over the edge.

He never said that. He said that you can still attack/defend/claim planets without playing DUST 514.
And this is true. You can request that the ground troops do it for you.

There are two pages of Dust 514 threads. Game looks awesome. Of course if it looked bad at a presentation that would be epic fail.
Anyways can someone point me to the thread which discusses Dust vis a vis ambulation? IE I want ambulation how will this affect it? Positively negatively, not at all... Is there anywhere where CCP addresses this? In otherwords help me find the thread please.

As somebody who hates console gamers and everything they stand for this brings sadness to me. This quote from the interview bit in particular really gets me:
CCP: Shooter on a console are different as shooters on the PC. We want to concentrate on developing a good console shooter.
There *IS* no such thing as a good console shooter, just look at the abortion that is Team Fortress 2 on consoles, vs. TF2 on the PC. All of them are equally inferior to PC versions. I bet you won't even be able to rocket jump right in it. The lack of a PC version is deeply, deeply disappointing. -----------
