Here's another screenshot, about 270km above the planet. Any closer and you start getting weirdness from the way the layers are used, I guess.

The ISS orbits at about 700 km. In EVE you come out of warp about 30000-40000 km from the planet. Even if you factor in the radius of the Earth (though I'm pretty sure that EVE calculates distances from the edges of objects), the ISS would still only be at 7000 km.
If you get down to those ranges, you'll see that the EVE planets are more than big enough. And vice versa: If you sit at 35000 km from Earth, it will probably be smaller than many of the EVE planets. -----

It's awesome that planets are getting the revamp they deserve and it looks like a very impressive first step. The cloud cover is a fantastic touch, if that's animated I'll probably spend a week just watching the planets :D. I did notice that the atmospheric scattering bloom is far too strong and the atmosphere is way too thick, but this may be because the planets haven't been increased in size yet. Photos of the earth from space don't have the same atmospheric characteristics as we're seeing in these screenshots and videos.
Another thing I'm wondering about is that underneath all the shiny and clouds, they look like dynamically textured spheres with bumpmaps. What happened to the idea of using fractal-based level of detail upscaling to generate further detail depending on zoom level? Is that in yet and is it limited to DX10 cards?

Aside from the fact that there are worlds that rotate very fast, or have very high speed storm bands in the upper atmosphere (Jupiter comes to mind).
If you were to observe Uranus directly, you could probably see it turn, it's a pretty big world (25,400 km radius) but makes a full rotation every 17 hours, the same for Neptune (24,800 km radius, 16 hour rotation). This is of course, assuming you were stationary relative to the planet.

Jupiter's rotation is just over 10 hours (the equator actually rotates faster, and the poles slower). Now ot's pretty simple to figure out how fast it takes to move one pixel in an image if you know the resolution - time per pixel is 10hours/Pi X image resolution.
So, if we imagine a 1080p resolution image of a jupiter like planet you'll be able to see about 1 pixel of motion every 5-10 seconds. Still a whole lot slower than what we see now, but observable to the patient (and god knows Eve has plenty of patient players).
If you measure the rotation of most of the planets in Eve right now they're spinning so fast they should fly apart.

When people found out planets weren't going to be in, CCP suggested the delay of 6-12 months would mean more than upgraded "higher resolution spheres", even claiming they were working on volumetric planets with simulated cloud effects.
Visually this looks like the same thing we have now, only with more texture layers and higher texture resolutions. If thats the case, it brings their graphical quality on par with that of other sections in EVE. But the more I think about it, the more I feel Trinity 2 and DX9.0c in general should be a stepping stone to something better.

Very nice upgrade. Hopefully we can see cities and such on the surface as well.
And maybe one day there will be significant fleet fights at planets and they'll be/appear larger!

Fit MWD and burn towards the planet? Here are some pics of Matar. I think the warp in points should be moved at least to half the distance they are at the moment. The new graphics don't really shine from the normal warp in distance. 1 2 3 4 5

Is it just me or do all the prime planets just use the same texture and only have different lighting ?

Might be, the new textures are quite high res, so they haven't done more of them yet? I'd imagine the graphics artists are making them manually at the moment. If they wanted new textures for all planets, they'd really would need some kind of planet texture generator or something.

Completely agree! Too bad you can't use procedural textures, it would look much better @ all distances.

Unfortunately, the few new planets I've seen haven't looked very good. They're largely a bright blur on my screen despite the fact that I'm running 1680x1050 at max settings. I think they may need to change how HDR and bloom affect planets. -Wrayeth n00b Extraordinaire "Look, pa! I just contributed absolutely nothing to this thread!" |

I have already filed a bug report for that, it's being looked at it says. _________________

Same problem here, and I use the same resolution as well. The new planets look completely white, like it hasn't loaded any textures at all.

I don't know my arse from my elbow when it comes to creating gfx effects, but would it not be possible to create some kinda random cloud formation animation in the atmosphere sphere?
Not too sure what CCP is capable or willing to do when it comes to planets.
Current new planets are better then the current celestial turds, bit it would be better to go the whole hog and do a great job instead of a quick fix that will have to be redone in x more years.
The gfx on the dust screen shot look pretty nifty, are planets of that quality too much for the trinity engine?.

new planets are better than the old ones for sure, but they arent really stunning. If i could i'd change some things :)
- move all stations way closer to the planet surface. Right now planets really look meh from an alittude of 10000km +
- warp to 0 brings you actually to a low orbit over a planets surface. How epic and emerging would it be to actually have fights with some objects in the background instead of the same space all the time.
- on the dark side of planets add city lights etc to show some civilization.
- work on the bloom effect. It burns out the textures to all white.
- add water. Where are the oceans? Right now it's all just mountains and rubble.
- add planetary flight :)
thanks

maybe make one playent like this, but not all. not every planet has civilisation and not every planet has water. some or gasplanets too and stuff. make them diverse. i think most planets should not have civilization.

Yeah, looks like they only have one new 'planet' that got applied to all the prime planets. It doesn't even have any visible water bodies and looks more suited for something dead rather than a major population center. Seems obvious that this is just a preliminary test and more variety is coming.
Though much better than what's on TQ, after all the wait I'm a bit disappointed, as I was (and still am) about the new effects. We'll have to wait and see, off course, for how this develops. ...

There are different planet textures there is one i forgot to take a picture of that was only a few jumps from fd-mlj that had a sweet hurricane on the surface with some really nice lightning affects will try to get some video tonight. For now though here are a couple taken from one of the planets in scolluzer. (Different texture than the prime planets) Pic 1 Pic 2 Pic 3 (Hyperion for reference)

CCP, bravo.
You guys keep coming closer and closer to bringing to life the world I've always dreamed of seeing during my lifetime. I'm patiently looking forward to seeing all the other designs you have for city planets (I.E. Coruscant [Second pic]), Gas giants, volcanic planets, Ice, desert, ocean, etc etc. The magic of having a game in space is the shear amount of details and differences you guys can make over time! You could even add scars to war-torn worlds.. oh man..
The only issues that I might have is 1: Will I be seeing sights like this in null-sec? and 2: Will stations be strategically moved to show this feature off more?
Throw the stations closer to planets (it's only a small difference in km), make some trailers and movies accentuating this feature, and watch the newbies come flying in. -------------------------------------------------- Please resize your signature to the maximum allowed of 400 x 120 pixels with a maximum file size of 24000 bytes. Originally by: AizenSousuke 2: Will stations be strategically moved to show this feature off more?
Originally by: CCP Chronotis Only a handful of the planet types have been made beautiful so far in this current build such as the core worlds (aka prime planets) (and those will get more prettier as better shaders are put in). The eventual plan is to bring the warp in points closer to the planets and we are also looking at moving the stations closer as well so you could have epic fights with the planets dominating the scene.

Any chance of someone uploading video footage? Pics are fine, but you really need to see video to get the full experience.

This makes me wonder, some people are saying that you come into a close orbit on WTZ, but so far I haven't gotten anywhere near to Caldari Prime, it's looking better but no close orbit yet, so is that because my client is a bit borked or is this close orbit only on one of the prime planets so far?
I was chatting to someone on SiSi earlier and we seem to be getting different effects on the planets as he has the full download install and I patched up from a TQ install, so perhaps there are some differences which are stopping me getting anywhere like as close as some players are able to get.
Just curious.

Edited by: Tres Farmer on 30/09/2009 12:37:05 - cloud texture resolution doesn't keep up with surface texture - bright horizon doesnt cover landscape, just 'oceans' thus making it look fake - procedural(?) surface texture should scale when getting closer.. lacks detail when closeup - surface procedure gamma is to high.. could use WAY more contrast and MORE saturation
though, nice work so far.. keep it up!
