Most planets have been hit up so far.
Few missing are gas giants and moons.
Also if you stare hard enough you can see the magma move on molten worlds.
Currently i think the 'green' planets are far to many in number and not as well varied as they can be, Yes they're all different but they still look mostly the 'same' Pre-order your Sisters of ≡v≡ Exploration ship today, Updated 11OCT09

Also who says you cant have dusters fight on a gas giant? Maybe there is some small structure floating in the upper atmosphere of the gas giants.

I found if you set your client shadows setting to anything less than High the lovely planet effects vanish leaving you with a blue ball. Wonder if that's just while they're getting them set up or if it's going to be the way you see them with medium or low shadows on TQ.
The are looking much much better now, and the star field is noticeably more impressive too. ------------------------------------------------ You either need a punch up the throat or a good shag.

Look awesome. Been hoping for really BIG planets for a long time. That day seems to have come!
Question though:
As you get really close to the planet do you bounce off or just "pop" through to the other side?
Definitely hoping for a bounce off effect. Not perfect but helps a lot with immersion letting you feel it is really there and not just a graphic.
Doubtless we will still warp through them but that's ok(ish).

At the moment the planets are a huge disappointment to me.
I can only hope that the remaining month until release will be seriously used to polish up the details.
The lightning on the planets - especially on the dark side - is completely out of order, making the planets appear totally artificial pieces. Look for example at the roids, they are much better.
Then the different types of planets, they are also pretty gross. Especially the lava planet. Hilarious bright. Bright as the surface of the stars. Just lol.
Furthermore the atmosphere is pretty much a joke. Especially around the earth-like planets. Just a glowing orb around the planet. At best some sort of coloring depending on the angle towards the sun, but that's it as far as I can see. No atmospheric effects on the night side. Stars have same brightness when they shine through the atmosphere compared to the vacuum. Clouds are just appearing flat on the planet, they do not hover above the ground and cast shadows.
Then all the different planets. They have no real hightmaps, when you look at the horizon you will notice that in extreme, everything will appear flat. Also there is no lod!
Pretty disapointing especially since Infinity had much better planets already two years ago.
The good news though is that there is still one month left! And that is a lot of time to polish up things and tweak around stuff so that it can look really great.
The groundwork is in there I think, now the detail work must be done. Good that this is not a final release :-)

Have you ever considered that even Mount Everest will look like dust on the horizon? Earth has a diameter of ~12000km, Mount everest is just under 9km high. Clouds are arounds 2 and 20km up. From space it will look like it do in these screenshots, very very flat. Also if you zoom in you will actually see that the clouds DO cast shadows, just that you hardly will see them as they are a 1200th of the diameter of the planet with the sun at a 45 degree angle.

I think I died and went to heaven.
For me, the crappy planets were a real immersion-breaker, so its great to see them up close and personal.
Someone up above said there was no Level-of-Detail (LOD) - well there probably is, like the bump maps etc turn off at a distance. The planets are procedurally generated, so LOD likely isn't handled the same way as it is for pre-generated assets such as ships, stations etc.
Now if we can warp *around* the planets rather than through them... (ie like Independence War 2 which did warping par excellence) ----- VPN-Firewall Guide

Look at some pics from the space shuttle or satellites, you can CLEARLY see the clouds rising above the ground even at angles of around 25-40 degrees, not to mention 70+ degrees.
Especially important are the self casting shadows of the clouds.
But as I said earlier, the stuff on the test server is work in progress and there is still one month left to improve things and there are 'only' details to improve - but that needs to be done in my opinion. So it is not hopeless :-)

Do you get (I suppose not) any kind of damage when approaching the upper atmospheres? It's amazing how this effect is simulated in X3.

Yep.
Or, put another way, the earth is smoother than a billiard ball. That includes from the deepest trench in the ocean to the tallest mountain.
Quote: OK, first, how smooth is a billiard ball? According to the World Pool-Billiard Association, a pool ball is 2.25 inches in diameter, and has a tolerance of +/- 0.005 inches. In other words, it must have no pits or bumps more than 0.005 inches in height. ThatĘs pretty smooth. The ratio of the size of an allowable bump to the size of the ball is 0.005/2.25 = about 0.002.
The Earth has a diameter of about 12,735 kilometers (on average, see below for more on this). Using the smoothness ratio from above, the Earth would be an acceptable pool ball if it had no bumps (mountains) or pits (trenches) more than 12,735 km x 0.00222 = about 28 km in size.
The highest point on Earth is the top of Mt. Everest, at 8.85 km. The deepest point on Earth is the Marianas Trench, at about 11 km deep.
Hey, those are within the tolerances! So for once, an urban legend is correct. If you shrank the Earth down to the size of a billiard ball, it would be smoother.

I know what you are trying to say, but keep in mind that Infinity is little more than a graphical showcase, not a gaming environment. I'm sure if CCP wanted to develop a pure "planet simulator" they could come up with some amazing stuff, but they have other priorities to consider.

Most of them look pretty decent. The exception being the lava planet, which doesn't look good and should be very rare. The only planet that would have it's entire surface covered by molten rock would be some king of protoplanet. Even Mercury, as close as it is to our sun, is not like this.
A moon or planet with very active geologic activity (similar to Io) is one thing, but a lava planet is something else.

Absolutly love the new planets. Way to go CCP. But I would like to see further improvement in the future. They must be more cinematic and dramatic. Like this. (Couple of screenshots from a SciFi movie).
Adding dynamic content on the planets where u can actually see them move. And giving suns better effects. While having a Red Giant in the system(with dynamic flares and solar spots) it would give the whole system a warmer look due the intense red light and interacting with ships and stations to make their textures reder too. And the same with blue shining suns giving everything a cold glow to it. __________________________________________________

X3 doesn't have dynamic weather systems. It's planets are static textures - You can't get closer or further away than you already are, at least within reason (there's no warping in X3, just slowboating to the next gate). Not to mention that X3 only has about a hundred planets in total in the entire game.
Compare that to around 40,000 planets in EVE, and 400,000 moons.
EVE is in a totally different league than X3 by now.

actually, if youll believe it.. x3 planets are actually full planets. spheres in space, with textures and everything.
problem is that they, as stated, arent really that great looking.
