For me to get information I have to ask them, as they're the only ones who really knows what's going on. If they are going to answer me they have to focus on that rather than working on the problem. Therefore I'd rather go and ask them for the details of why this happened once it's fixed, rather than delay the fix by asking right now.

If this forum post is an "interruption" to those who are supposed to be fixing it, then someone has too much time to goof off on the internet, and they aren't taking their job that seriously now, are they?
For me to get information I have to ask them, as they're the only ones who really knows what's going on. If they are going to answer me they have to focus on that rather than working on the problem. Therefore I'd rather go and ask them for the details of why this happened once it's fixed, rather than delay the fix by asking right now.
Thats right. Fix first, execute responsible later.

Calm down, folks. I know and understand your frustration; I was in the middle of a mission as well, my ship might be in peril as well, but I understand that this kind of things happen. **** happens. It might be nobody's fault; things break down and get fixed. Might take more time or less time, who knows? EVE Online is a VERY complex game. I know that there's a gazillion things that could go wrong. We're playing in a huge universe that functions because of a large server cluster. One of the servers goes down? Big problems. A link between two servers gets cut? Big problems. Game crashing is part of the game too. So what if you lose a ship? It's bytes on a server, pixels on a screen, they can go poof in a second. Rinse and repeat. It's a virtual thing :)

EvE online game server(s) are pretty stable compare to others game servers. Names will be left out. No need to blame ccp, since the server(s) are locate in England. CCP was pretty fast to give info.
They who loose ships due to this crash may use F12 - petition and ask polite to get the lost ship back. I say. no big deal. There are other problems in the society that should consern peoples more :)

The truth!
The real reason that the servers went down isn't anything to do with the network. The truth is that the guinea pigs have been seeing that the hamsters have been getting all the attention. In a blinded hatred they quickly went in and murdered all of them. CCP is right now picking up the bloody mess and trying to buy new hamsters. Wrangler must be down there right now getting the guys. I just hope that they actually put up a better security system next time to keep the guinea pigs out.

Good man. Most of the time techies go largely unnoticed by the rest of the people and are allowed to actually work. Then whenever something goes wrong, when the techies most need to focus on the problem, everybody suddenly wants them giving updates every 10 minutes and attending meetings all day... The best response when there is any technical crisis is always the same- make sure the techies know it is happening, make sure they know the priority, get confirmation that they are working on it, tell them to let you know if there is anything you can do to help, and don't email or call them again.

Yeah wth is the deal with traffic advisaries? Who the hell gives a crap if some stupid gate in east jesus is open or closed. I'm sure it makes perfect sense to spam everyone who just waited in line to login with 15000 traffic advisory messages that are of zero relevance, just to add to the server load while everyone is trying to get back on. And if the gate im sitting at is closed I would find out alot faster by looking at it versus trying to pick out the one relevant message in the 15k that are spamming my screen rapid fire. |

You could use the downtime to properly read the EULA, especially the part about how the service is guaranteed (hint: or not). Edit: Not EULA, Terms of Service rather, but reading the EULA doesn't hurt either.

Who said its anything to do with the patch? The server has been reasonably fine since the main patch... could easily be a hardware failure or anyone of a number of causes, including bugs in code which hasn't been touched in years.
Wrangler doesn't have anything to do with getting the servers back up and running, all (sorry, don't mean it the way it sounds) he does during server failures is let us know when its likely to be back and once it is back find out it went away after the techies have done their thing (or if its a hamster fault the vet has done what ever needs doing, including visiting the local pet shop for a new one) -- Users are like a virus - each causing a thousand tiny crises until the host finally dies. |

Now what does that say about the game as a whole, and the money you spent, since this is the case?
I'll be honest... I'm more mad that they didn't have a Plan B for this level of a crash, than anything else. Correct me if I'm wrong...
Wait, let me stop myself for a second. If you are a dire hard fanboy of the game, don't reply. If you have played +5 years and will justify this with how great the game is, don't reply. If you want to make a comment about how I should "suck it up like a man," don't reply either...
Anyway... my point is, that if they have only one dedicated server for EVE, why wasn't a precautionary, secondary server available for something like this? Does CCP not have the money for one? Or is it a matter of the fact that they failed to see this kind of circumstance arise?
I'm not saying that EVE sucks because of "technical difficulties," but I will say that I fault them for not preparing for a scenario like this, especially since this just happened a week after the new expansion came out. In a programer's sense, it just seems like bad form for the company overall.

Watching the "que count" and "players" count, it looks like folks are getting through the que - at about 10 per minute - but quite a few are crashing out or logging out every minute and nobody has been actually getting into the game for 20+ minutes now. I have a feeling there's another reboot comming - this isn't throttled, it's pretty much throttled to DEATH.

Not to mention that sometimes it's not due to the server itself, but the ISP's they use to get EVE to us as soon as possible (and they use multiple carriers).
Sometimes, you just can't get what you want. ---

So much for the moaning, but if it's a 'network issue', how much of that is beyond CCPs' control ?
We all know about the server issues, with load balancing and so on, but there's bound to be some things they have no control over. A network problem can start hundreds of miles away, as anyone with some network knowledge will know.
Think of the problems your home network gives.. and multiply it...
I think due credit to CCP for being on the case so quickly, unlike other games. And at least a MOD shows his face here to tell us what he can, when he can.

It's really great to hear CCP finally admit that there's problems with Dominion! The other day I had so much lag after installing that patch. (PROBLEMS AFTER INSTALLING PATCH) but yet when I posted about it, eve players did noting but write negative responses to my post. Funny that all of a sudden there's no problem with the game. BTW it wasn't the cable company, not was anything wrong with my $2700.00 computer system, because all was checked by a PROFESSIONAL and passed inspection. IT WAS THE PATCH, but yet we have the people who hide behind their computers terminals and attempt to antagonize other players with their STUPIDITY! SUCK ON THAT! You know who you are!

We're very open about when there are issues with the game. We have a known issues page where you can review current issues with Dominion and possible workarounds for many. Wanted to point that out as some people may not be aware of that.

Not to mention that sometimes it's not due to the server itself, but the ISP's they use to get EVE to us as soon as possible (and they use multiple carriers).
Sometimes, you just can't get what you want.
But that's just it. If they stick it all on a "performance pretty" cluster to get the players to play it, and "pray" to whatever deity they believe in that it won't crash seems like a bad idea overall. I know systems crash, I know that servers get disconnected...
But not having a set of backups to work with is a bit illogical. Yeah, having a fast, sleek server is nice, but putting all your eggs in one basket isn't the best choice either. I know that WoW, Matrix Online, FF11 have some ****ty machines used as their servers, but when they crash, it's not nearly as dramatic as this...
I also think it has to do more with the dynamics of the game itself. If you DC in, say, WoW, and some **** ass 13 yr old kills you while you're standing still in the server's perspective, all you have to do then it run back up to your body and "get your body back"...
But if you disconnect in EVE, and your ship was roaming in 0.0 space. Then when you wake up in the station after being pod killed you've lost alot of things that you can't get back... stuff that may cost billions of ISK to buy again, and time to re-obtain...
I guess it's the flaw with how much everything costs in the game, and that cost directly links to the time spent. You spend TIME to make ISK, to get better ships, and to obtain better standings at stations. It's that TIME you can't get back when your ship is destroyed, you implants are gone, and your jet cans have expired because "OMG WTF SERVER ERROR ****ING ****!", and then you have to spend MORE TIME to regain the SAME stuff you lost and worked so hard for...
So yeah... bit of a rant, but with this kind of gameplay, it makes server errors like this even more dramatic. It's not that the server crashed. It's that we all spent alot of time to acquire our ships, our attributes, and our valuables in this game, and losing that symbolic expression of "hard work" is... I guess heart wretching... because of some sheer dumb circumstance like this...

No one can anticipate when things will go wrong, especially if it is something that is beyond their control there is bugger all someone can do but wait. At least CCP got the matter resolved fairly quickly. With other companies, people may need to wait til the next day, so in that respect we're lucky.
Perhaps in the case of hardware failures, CCP does have backup servers, hard drives, datanases etc, but if they do, it still takes time to get these things in place when the main hardware falls over.
Another thing you might want to remember, is it is late Saturday night in Iceland, I don't know many workplaces where staff give up their weekends the way Wrangler and Fallout and the guys behind the scenes have. If it was my workplace, the person on call would be telling the customer the earliest they could help is Sunday morning.

Fault? There's not much CCP can do about unexpected network failures. Hell, even the greatest administrators couldn't stop most of the issues that the server experience. When you can anticipate AND stop a server failure, then you'd be the richest admin in the world.
Besides, the server was down for a whole 30 minutes...not like the sky was falling. On another note, I also have an annoying sig.

I doubt the CEO of CCP would resign over an outage.
The server is back up, people are online and playing again, be thankful, not flameful. Nothing is perfect, things break down, things get fixed, but it takes time.
EVE isn't the be all and end all of life.
I get annoyed too when I can't get online or can't play EVE, but I don't come on here and flame the people with "WTFOMG CCP GET THE %%^$%&* GAME WORKING AGAIN!" that are busy working their butts off trying to fix the problem during their LATE SATURDAY NIGHT.

You cannot get any IT related service or product for 15 dollars/euro's a month and expect any guarantees. Most if not all products offered in this price range are best effort services.
Your expectations are unreasonable. You are not being ripped off. You are getting exactly what you payed for. A response time of 5 minutes, and a solution within 30, are extremely fast for products in this price range.

If that's so, if you went to a doctor and his response time is 2hrs but you have to pay 30grand, is that reasonable at all.

I'm only backing up CCP because I recognise the reality of the situation...something went wrong, it took them time to figure out what, they fixed it, we are playing again, they said sorry something is wrong, they explained what happened to my satisfaction, I am back in EVE doing what I was doing before the outage on one screen, and typing this mesage to you on the other.
Yes we're all Mortals, but is 30 minutes of time in an artificial world THAT important to you? I'd be the first to admit I am addicted to EVE, but not to the extent you seem to be.
I explained to you in a previous post, I imagine CCP never garauntee a perfect service, just the best they can provide. If perfect is what you are after, you're going to be disappointed a lot in life.
If game time is so important to you, why are you here flaming the providers of your enjoyment so intently, rather than on TQ playing the game? Go! Play! Be happy that the problem was fixed so quickly!
And remember that in reality, it doesn't matter how much you pay someone to provide you with a service, it takes time for the work to be done. Nothing in the world is instant, not even instant coffee...

Hi everyone.
I'm Valar, the senior virtual world database administrator for EVE Online.
I'd like to start by offering sincere apologies for the outage tonight. At first we believed we had a network problem, but it quickly became clear that it was the database that was the actual issue. I seem to have not communicated it properly to the community team that there was not a network problem, so they continued talking about those in this thread and that was a mistake on my part.
The problem we had is not connected to the Dominion expansion. It is actually exactly the same problem as caused the crash we had last Sunday at 23:49, before the deployment of the expansion. This is a hard crash in the SQL Server engine and the SQL Server does not fail over automatically after the crash, so our high availability system does not work in this case. We have a high priority case open with Microsoft and they have escalated it to the SQL Server development team and they are looking into the problem for us.
For the people that were wondering about our backup servers and redundancy. We do have a standby SQL Server that is an exact copy of our main one, in a shared storage failover configuration. If one fails, the other one should take over. The failover is not seamless and in the past it has always crashed EVE.
The game simulation is run on a cluster of machines, 20 CPUs for proxies and over 200 for solarsystem simulation. We have some machines not running any solarsystems, so if one machine goes down, the solarsystem is mapped to another machine. All client connections to the systems are lost while the system is remapped. Node deaths in EVE are very rare nowadays so this does not affect a lot of people. Most disconnects are due to external factors, like ISP peering problems. ---- Virtual World Database Administrator Operations department CCP Games |

As Wrangler said, he didn't want to disturb the techs while they were working on the problem. As I said in reply to that earlier, an update after the fact makes more sense, than trying to get one during the problem.

The difference being that you waited 30 minutes, payed 15 dollars for the entire month and health care is just a tiny bit more important than a game.
Otherwise a great comparison...

They can, and are. If you have a problem with your ISP you have to call them, hold for some time, get an underpaid and undereducated employee on the line to explain your problem to. They may or may not escalate the problem to the people actually supposed to fixed the issue. If the problem is somewhat serious it's unlikely to be fixed within 24 hours. This 'service' costs you about 20/30 euro a month.
A small business paying 200/300 euro a month can get the same problem fixed within hours.

Originally by: CCP Wrangler The following is from CCP Valar, who posted below:
---- Virtual World Database Administrator Operations department CCP Games
Update: We have now stopped throttling logins.
Update: Tranquility is now up, but logins to the server are being throttled due to the issues we are experiencing.
Update: The server is now expected to come up at 22:20 GMT/UTC.
We are bringing the server back up after experiencing network issues. The server is estimated to be up at 21:50 GMT/UTC.
Welcome to the wonderful world of the non-yielding scheduler fault problem.

Thanks Valar for the clarification. I seem to have been one of the ones getting in before turning in, and retrieving my ship which was scampering about, I don't know where!
Seems a lot of folks still have issues late into the night.

Edited by: Pteranodon on 06/12/2009 10:51:56 Some of my thoughts on the deployment of new patches and if you don't agree- well we are not arguing that, just be democratic.
Many years ago I worked with a utility company who supported tens of thousands of customers.
They had a whole floor of a large building stuffed full of computers effectively a parallel test infrastructure. Every single application used by that company was tested to destructive down to the level of DLL analysis & conflict tables being mapped where various applications had known issues. If any changes or updates to the infrastructure where planned they were tested months in advance. Upgrades were subsequently smooth & problems were very few.
My take on the Eve update patch situation is not enough testing with the user base being used as a feedback machine to correct issues. I have the opinion that the infrastructure as it stands at the moment cant support 50K users logged in at once. A history of all the major crashes seems to point at when there are large numbers of users in game. When do we get large numbers of users?- after patch day of course.
As for the databases- I'm no expert but there has to be something better than SQL to manage the data-lets face it it has legendary reputation for being flaky.
Why have content updates twice yearly. Why not nine months development & three months testing. Seems better than rushing out hasty patches of new flaky content?
My final comment is that I pay to play Eve not sit in a queue of 500 waiting to login & I have paid enough subscriptions to earn my point of view.
The test server is a mute point because even when we test & provide feedback you at CCP will do your own thing anyway so get rid of it for public access & use it yourselves as Eve as it stands could do with an awful lot of testing.

I still don't understand why companies with real internet services use half ass solutions like a clustered Microsoft SQL environment .... go buy Oracle on AIX or Solaris like a real company ... there is a reason you don't see AMEX, Visa, or any large EDI like structure running Microsoft SQL to support their public facing front ends (or mission critical back ends). Hello you think Microsoft is running its Peoplesoft or SAP systems on Microsoft SQL .. guess what, surprise surprise, they aren't.

I had suspected a DB issue right after getting back into the game after the crash. Getting back in I found my sister core probes gone from my launcher and 10 additional sisters combat probes in there instead.
I wonder when the fall-back DB gets its content replicated as I had indeed been using combats but had unloaded and loaded the cores fairly shortly before the crash I think (was afk at the time of the crash though, so not sure how shortly before that was).
It also seems weird that those 10 probes suddenly "materialized" out of thin air (and the cores vanishing into said thin air). If an outdated replicate DB had been the issue I'd have expected to have the cores in my hold and 10 of my owned combats in the launcher instead (the previous state of my ship before loading the cores).
The DB being such an integral part of eve, I hope these issues get resolved quickly. Regards, Dahl.

That's what I love about Microsoft fanatics, always making excuses for the vendor. Fact is CCP's primary business driver is Eve which means, like with any business driver, it needs to be resourced properly. It is irrelevant if Microsoft and CCP are working to resolve the issue, the fact is their solution failed. CCP chose to go with Microsoft SQL who anybody worth their salt in the real DBA world knows, just not the click monkey SA's who maintain databases, is that Microsoft SQL clustering solution currently has, and always has, serious HAC and performance issues.
I am not bashing Microsoft here for the sake of bashing them, their products are great for what they are meant for and even MSSQL has its places, but this isn't one of those places. You say Microsoft probably gave them the best deal and they shopped around but I doubt it. In my experience businesses don't factor in TCO, MTTF, reputation loss, support and sustainability cost, etc etc when going with post products, they simply look at the initial price tag for the application and my guess is CCP did the same; as the old saying goes "nobody gets fired for buying Cisco or Microsoft when it fails, you do get fired if you buy some other vendor cause everybody knows you should only buy Microsoft of Cisco". Oracle has some seriously competitive pricing as do the VAR's (IBM, Sun, Fujitus, etc etc).
Also the fact they aren't back up in twelve hours (still having massive gate closures) means they have some serious DRP problems also. At this point they prob should have realized ten hours ago to just roll the db back and drive on. As far as I can tell the geeks are running show and instead of doing the right thing after thirty minutes (shut the whole thing down, initiate DRP, and rollback) they are trying to debug on a production environment; somebody in the business office needs to reel them in. At some point the cost to company reputation by downtime outweighs the cost of losing some lost SP.

The mail issue is fixed, a relog should clear up any issues you still have.
Note that blaming MS for the issues we had now would not be fair as the startup issues were caused by an improper shutdown and the mail issues were caused by new code deployed with Dominion. The mail SQL procedures were also a major contributor to the SQL load problem we had after startup. ---- Senior Virtual World Database Administrator Operations department CCP Games |

It wouldn't have been a proper patch without any serious problems since that's what happened with all the major patches. Compared to the earliest patches this is just a tiny glitch.

Edited by: Florio on 06/12/2009 15:42:35 Hi, I've been having untypical problems over the last few days too. Namely lag spikes where EVE freezes. Lost a ship to it and it is regular enough to make EVE pretty unplayable at this time, certainly PvP. No idea why it is happening but lag like this has not happened to me for almost a year. No other internet problems, no change of computer or settings or net provider.
edit/ i'm on Windows xp and eve voice has been fine.
