Edited by: baltec1 on 17/01/2010 21:25:50 Gotta say. After playing it for a while I just dont see how it can be called an MMORPG. It simply has no RPG in it at all, the pve is not much better than in eve and the pvp sucks balls. It is also the most risk free game I have ever played. If you die you dont even have to start the mission again, it just continues from where you left off...
Its fun but Im not paying a monthy fee for a star trek freelancer. Oh and it seems their forums are not very secure

baltec I feel you. It's just a big singleplayer game with a few multiplayer options thrown in. Hell, there's more NPCs wandering around stations than there are players. That's gotta be a bad sign.
Anyway, I was reading through the STO forums and came across this thread. I somehow find it amusing that STO being released may actually be a boost to Eve subscribers ;D

EVE Online: "The Universe is Yours" Star Trek Online: "The incredibly scripted bubble you are in is not yours and never will be because of the Prime Directive"
I think that about sums it up. EVE is for dictators, STO is for followers.

Lulz are to be had in that thread:
"After playing this game throughout CB and into OB i have gone into depression due to the fact that i have been waiting for this game for 2+ years and it didn't deliver."
Predicting that this guy's EVE career will be hilariously brief...

what a waste of a good title. ship control is useless, you cant go directly up or down, graphics look clunky and old. And the cream of the crop the groundside combat is simply laughable, what a way to ruin a truely fantastic name. eh? |

So much for STO stealing eve subscriptions

I tried hard to like it, I love Star Trek. Played it over the last 5 days. I'm not giving Cryptic my money for that.

Well, I am in the OB and enjoying it quite a bit. I laugh at all the people ragging on STO based on less than a week of game play in a beta in which only @ 20% of the content is unlocked at the moment (the rest is unlocked this week). MMOs all take time to germinate into a good game, even EVE...it is head and shoulders above what it was when I started in 2006. I have faith STO will prosper as well...likely in a quicker fashion as well as they are going to have far more actual subcribers than EvE (as a niche) could ever hope to.

Well its a good thing developers don't listen to the unwashed tro.. err masses as by all accounts eve was a ginormous turd when it was first released with pretty much zero content past the ability to mine in your noob ship and then lose it to someone in another noob ship that was armed and pointed instead of kitted out to mine. STO is a big ole carebear riskless pve oriented massively single player game and it will get droves of subs if the ingame chat is any indication as I quit listening to the 'opinions' of forum poasters regardless of the game loooooooong ago.
tl;dr: If you like star trek and carebearing then sto is gonna make you a very happy camper which if wows subscription base is any indication it will be the next big thing in casual mmo's. Eve as usual will plug along with it jaded and hateful niche playerbase weeding out the new subs at a steady incrimental rate leaving only the strongest to resub for another month.

I have fond memories of Eve from June 2003, when I started. Though it was my first mmo so perhaps that clouded my judgement a little. I hope I'm wrong about STO, Star Trek deserves to be translated to a good mmo.

Early 2005 for me and yes eve has clouded mine and everyones judgement due to it simply being the best there is. That however doesn't mean that because sto isnt eve that its not a good game. Saying that, after exploring all the current content in the begginer zones in sto I am fairly satisfied with the experience so far and will probably sub up later this year when its not lulz overpriced at a AAA single player game price. $50 to get entry into a carebear mmo? Nahhhhh..

diferent is, eve is a sandbox game, content is not required, the players generate that themselves, i have barely ever touched missions.
i mined, i kill peoples and take there stoof, occasionaly rat.
in sto (ive been playing it a week now...) is far too instanced for my liking every 20 feet you move theres a loading screen, and because of the instancing the "rp" is well, ****ed...
its SFC/BC with a subscription fee, and quite franklly its not worth a subscription fee, if it was F2P wit hmicrotransactions - which it is going to have along side the sub anyhow id buy it for the "need a break from eve time".. -----------------------------------------------

Which is why I quit playing the beta(to save the content for later) and will now wait patiently for steam to offer it at 75% offish.

The space combat is a lot of fun.
The content is very basic atm, but theyve got the basics right I think and this could develop well.
It is EVE? No, never will be.
Can you pick up and play for half hour without any worrys?
Yes. Something EVE will never be.
Your brave and I like it. Same reason why I like STO more than WoW/EVE. It's even more casual friendly than those two and beside, it's aweshume! It's STAR FREAKING TREK! My scientic officer looks like female spock :o

I played again last night. I got some help understanding their missions/map setup. That allowed me to enjoy the game more. I actually had fun and didn't get sleepy or bored!
STO is easy and forgiving. If you're suffering from Eve related combat fatigue you could switch to STO and do space battles on easy mode.
However I don't think STO will have long term appeal to players that want a real challenge.

what utter crap, a space based game that, you cant move your ship freely, spiraling down or up to get to a target, If bridge commander can get it so right for the ship combat and its 5+ years old why cant they get it right. LAZY!!! eh? |

Yeah I know! How dare the devs have a buggy and unoptimal set of game mechanics and movement controls on a beta release!

try not to be a muppet! the games devs have stated that the movement controls and lack of direct up down movement is by design. eh? |

Yeah and they also said that they are still looking into if it was a wise design descision.

No argument from me about that though it really only effects the pvp side of the game and I'm completely uninterested in that part of it.

The mapping system doesnt have auto pilot, so going to do a quest in another sector is much harder to find!
Ive been playing since the 13th of Jan, I was disappointed that flying through space would be fun, but the system is hopeless. This game is more for Royal Trekkies.
I will just stick with eve as a royal eve freak!

Have to give them some credit tho..
....Had to be hard making space feel small.
And yes i know not all areas are open yet, but i also know the ships are about the scale of a toy model.

Most of people bashing here are so called "hardcore nerds" that will sink happily hours and hours to their favorite ******* (whatever it's called, EVE or WoW) but when something *ALERT ALERT HI DEFENSIVE MODE ENABLED* casual comes along, they go nuts and screams how bad it is. Those who says that WoW is casual, for 1-79 levels it is but once you start playing WoW @ 80, it's far from casual if you want to be something other than blue geared quest poop.
And don't get me started with "EVE is casual too", it's not and you know it unless you live in deep inside denial cave or something.
So yeah, STO comes and will fill my need for casual sci-fi MMO. Already canceled WoW

STO is to EVE, like a Pot Noodle is to a proper dinner. Quick, naughty and enjoyable but I wouldn't want one every meal.
