Hai guys!
After seven months and seven hundred cans of red-bull, I can finally show you guys what happens when you put New Eden, the Unreal 3 Engine and large quantities of caffeine into a blender.
Many thanks to everybody who helped me with this, whether it was inspiration, motivation, or ensuring I was well fed during its development.
Huge thanks to Kyoko Sakoda for his utter genius and support during this project.

It was alright. I think it could have used quite a bit more polishing.. it seems actually somewhat rushed. A lot more could have been done with the engine you're using - even provided the eve model's aren't all that great.
Nice concept and PROOF of concept, but I'd have polished it quite a bit more first. (Mainly I'm talking about weapons and explosion effects... really kinda subpar imho). Those huds rocked though!
Rushed is a bit harsh, Kale has had to learn a lot of the plug-ins and other tools he used from scratch and I know for a fact that he has spent many many months on this vid and I for one think it has turned out to be rather excellent. the story, editing and music are all solid and I happen to think it looks fantastic...but some may call me biased
time to cash in my Red Bull shares

The wrecks and effects. CCP can already do formation, but wrecks are just crap atm (except for capitals), as are the effects. Especially since cyno effects got nerfed...

I can safely say that all those hours and what could possibly be genetic-changing amounts of red-bull was well spent!
That was absolutely amazing, exceptional display of talent, imaginative use of software(s) and gave a real feel of a proper movie.
Voice acting and editing was superb as was the editing of the movie itself.
My only objection would be that it wasnt clear exactly why things were happening.
Its nothing big and could very well be contributed to me being hungover. Will watch several times more to make sure. :P
Again, a brilliant peace of work there Kale!

Ok lets give you some ratings now...
Audio/Sound: 8/10 - I did like the voice talk, but what I hated was this trance what so ever tracks. In the middle of the fight. It needs something more epic, like as you see in huge movies all the directors are using something vocal (epic) audio on the background of some action is happening.
Idea: 9/10 - was good, but I didn't understand the end. So it took -1 ball off the ideal movie.
Efects: 10/10 - DAMN! I LIKE IT! Well done, the efects and the grafic side. Amazing!
End rate: 9/10 - good work and everything. But as Eve Online player it is very hard to understand those new efects what you use. And ofc. the idea of frigs and ceptors coming out of Mothership Quote:

. Next time stick to the basics of game mechanics. As also the efects. You can do something good as CCP does with the videos : "Dominion Trailer" , "The Butterfly Effect" ... stick too as the game limits are.

What's wrong about it? Carriers can carry plenty of ships in their SMB, the thing they don't carry is the pilots - and you know that's probably only for technical reasons. It'd be so much cooler if you could actually dock up on a Carrier and do that. (balance issues aside...)

Jeez guys, firstly thank you so much for the awesome comments, they're incredibly motivational! :D
As a few have already mentioned this was my first jump into the Unreal 3 Engine, as well as my first for a fair few programs. It all began as a University project to show the progression of cinematics within game engines (which gave me the time I needed to produce this, as well as a deadline).
Because of that, I wanted to keep this Machinima as "pure" as possible. This unfortunately meant that I would be moving away from programs I was already competent with, like After Effects and other post production programs - and instead, I tried to get to a point where the movie could be watched entirely within Unreal. This put up restrictions, however, it also offered some pretty fun challenges - which led to some interesting manifestations, that wouldn't have made it into the movie otherwise!
I love writing EVE fiction, which was the real inspiration for this Machinima. This meant that the film was not going to portray a world ruled by game mechanics, but rather an alternate reality of EVE that I use when I write fiction.
Again, thanks for the comments and the feedback. I shall pass the sentiments on to everyone involved! Glad you guys enjoyed it! :D

The main programs I used were:
The Unreal Development Kit (for... well... everything... thank you Epic!)
3D Studio MAX for models and construction of skeletal ship animations.
Photoshop for the materials and textures.
Other programs used included:
Tri-exporter, for extracting the Eve models and textures. Kudos to Selvin for making that - and thanks CCP for letting me use them!
Adobe Premiere and After Effects for final composition and UI scenes - Kyoko physically scares me when he uses those programs.
Shadermap Pro for creating texture materials, mostly normal maps.
Sony Sound Forge, Adobe Soundbooth and Audacity for sound engineering. <3 JadeMotoko for her expertise in these areas.
Fraps, to record the footage within UDK.
And finally, a multitude of plugins for 3DS Max and After Effects, for epic ship violence! :D

Well the idea is good (nothing wrong of that). And I like it... And btw. if we want to talk as offtopic then there thread about CCP asking ideas of making new class of ships. And one guy was making idea of building new class of ships in eve: "Hive ships" use search to see more info, or click here ... Basicly it has same idea as in this movie: Like ships undocking from some other ship. And I myself are supporting this thing 100%.

Very impressive. Particularly your ship UI.
My only real problem is it didn't really feel like EVE. It's like a trailer for a movie that doesn't end up quite like how the trailer promised. The official Dominion promo had this same problem but to a lesser degree. Trying to appeal to the masses by making it more generic space sci-fi like.
This is still pretty awesome to watch on it's own terms however. A job well done.
PS. The Prodigy's "Invaders Must Die" Album is way overused.

Yup, because I had the same lightbulb moment that I think Kale had, except mine was a few weeks ago and Kales' (I'm guessing) must have been 7-12 months ago.
The bar has been set pretty high...and I literally cannot praise the efforts of Kale Tt all enough for dedication to the realisation of their creative vision. But the thing that really impresses me the most is the camera work. It truly is sublime. Tracks, zooms, dolly, swish cutting between everything on grid - it is masterfully choreographed and composited.

I really don't see the problem here... If you want to make EVE cinematically attractive, some liberties HAVE to be taken. I'd much rather watch this than a video of an FC setting up a gate camp and calling primaries. This is why it's EVE fiction; it takes place in the EVE universe but it has its own backstory and circumstances.

If I might add one thing. Since the voice overs did get drowned a bit at places, intentional or not, how about making a rather small and uninterrupting but yet easy to read subtitle somewhere on the screen? Subtitles in general makes it a bit less "movie-like" but it frustrates me personally more when voices get drowned out. Personal opinion, but would be much appriciated

Absolutely fabulous work! Impressive choreographed battles, really good voice acting, interesting set. It has it all! Except for pretty graphics. Gawd those textures are horrible, but I don't blame you for that. Clearly limitations of the engine.

i ran the 876mb file through divx convertor @ HD720 and it reduces the file to 360mb with no noticeable loss of quality
u will need divx player to view it but that is free to download from Divx
just a thought for those with slower net connections

I enjoyed watching this, and I appreciate the amount of work put into it, however...
I found the graphics in the vid to look much much uglier than the ones in the actual game. Too much swirly, massive red flames and junk. CCP did a very smart thing when they made the explosions blue - they look clean, and they make battle "cold". This vid did neither, and ended up looking incredibly messy and unsightful.
Also, the music was too damn loud. You can't play super loud music, then turn down the volume for 5 seconds when someone says something very quietly, and then turn it right back up again.
And for god's sake, next time you use alternate graphics, make sure they aren't brutally pixilated. There's nothing more jarring than seeing nice and smooth on one side and a bunch of colored blocks on the other.
tl;dr: This vid is halfway done. Was released before it was ready. Needs to be cleaned up bigtime. Points for effort though.
EDIT: I don't mean to gripe, but in real life the massive (minmatar?) fleet would have crushed the lone carrier and battleships rather quickly. Not to mention that they would have killed the jump freightors first. And the fact that you can't use bubbles in lowsec... I only wish that the maker of this vid had paid attention to detail... But now it's too late I guess.
EDIT2: And not to mention that they would have needed a titan to bridge all those battleships. On both sides. I mean, you could say that this are just minor details, but then what was the point of going to all that trouble and making the vid in the first place? People like me were bound to get caught up on all the details.
EDIT3: Actually, now that I'm watching it again... I heard the interceptor pilot saying "let's get the colonists out of here" in her little voice, and all I could think was NOOOBS died lol!
EDIT4: Interdictors don't need to sit on top of a target to bubble. So blowing it up was pointless. This is made even more apparent by the fact that the bubble isn't even centered on the dictor in the vid. And I'm sure everyone noticed this, but those weren't rifters.
EDIT5: Ugh. How did you manage to make your cyno and jump effects even more ugly than they are in game? I mean, honestly. Also, I may be wrong, but I don't think those naglfars were in siege mode. And the rokhs were charging with the ravens? Were they carrying blasters? What kind of weird fleet is this?
EDIT6: In a similar vein, I would have preferred to see a bunch of minmatar fighters come out... you could have done hilarious and wonderful things if you just tweaked the pilots inside and made them move a little.
EDIT7: Lol those interceptor pilots must be crazy, charging straight at the enemy. No transversal whatsoever. Should have been picked off in seconds, assuming the ships were all firing randomly, which seems to have been the case.

Yeah I thought that was weird too... The Caldari ships, who generally have the best range with their missiles, had to fly toward the Min Fleet? I know Min ships would get good range with the Arties, but no more than what the Caldari ships would get with Rails and missiles.
I really enjoyed this, but the attention to detail is lacking. The graphics aren't spectacular either... like the previous poster pointed out, they're much better in game and I've seen better in other player made movies. And it WAS hard to hear/understand what the characters were saying.
All that being said, I still enjoyed it. Think of this as constructive criticism. I'm looking forward to seeing future efforts by the creators!

Also, since some people here believe Eve videos are SRS BIZNES, let me reiterate a point already made by others: This video is purely for entertainment, and liberties will be taken to ensure an entertaining final product. This isn't Boring Eve Combat: The Video, this is two fleets slugging it out.

But they weren't slugging it out. They were shooting entirely at random. The pilots were dummies. I was rooting for the "good" side to die. Isn't that a bad thing?

I take your point, but... like 90% of the shots were missing. How do you miss a carrier and two freighters that aren't even moving? They weren't slugging it out, they were falling under the trope of More Dakka. Advanced technology be damned, these turrets will NOT hit!
Also, the commander who ordered those freighters to jump into an unknown situation with 500,000 people aboard is surely too dumb to live.

I enjoyed watching this, and I appreciate the amount of work put into it, however...
I found the graphics in the vid to look much much uglier than the ones in the actual game. Too much swirly, massive red flames and junk. CCP did a very smart thing when they made the explosions blue - they look clean, and they make battle "cold". This vid did neither, and ended up looking incredibly messy and unsightful.
Also, the music was too damn loud. You can't play super loud music, then turn down the volume for 5 seconds when someone says something very quietly, and then turn it right back up again.
And for god's sake, next time you use alternate graphics, make sure they aren't brutally pixilated. There's nothing more jarring than seeing nice and smooth on one side and a bunch of colored blocks on the other.
tl;dr: This vid is halfway done. Was released before it was ready. Needs to be cleaned up bigtime. Points for effort though.
EDIT: I don't mean to gripe, but in real life the massive (minmatar?) fleet would have crushed the lone carrier and battleships rather quickly. Not to mention that they would have killed the jump freightors first. And the fact that you can't use bubbles in lowsec... I only wish that the maker of this vid had paid attention to detail... But now it's too late I guess.
EDIT2: And not to mention that they would have needed a titan to bridge all those battleships. On both sides. I mean, you could say that this are just minor details, but then what was the point of going to all that trouble and making the vid in the first place? People like me were bound to get caught up on all the details.
EDIT3: Actually, now that I'm watching it again... I heard the interceptor pilot saying "let's get the colonists out of here" in her little voice, and all I could think was NOOOBS died lol!
EDIT4: Interdictors don't need to sit on top of a target to bubble. So blowing it up was pointless. This is made even more apparent by the fact that the bubble isn't even centered on the dictor in the vid. And I'm sure everyone noticed this, but those weren't rifters.
EDIT5: Ugh. How did you manage to make your cyno and jump effects even more ugly than they are in game? I mean, honestly. Also, I may be wrong, but I don't think those naglfars were in siege mode. And the rokhs were charging with the ravens? Were they carrying blasters? What kind of weird fleet is this?
EDIT6: In a similar vein, I would have preferred to see a bunch of minmatar fighters come out... you could have done hilarious and wonderful things if you just tweaked the pilots inside and made them move a little.
EDIT7: Lol those interceptor pilots must be crazy, charging straight at the enemy. No transversal whatsoever. Should have been picked off in seconds, assuming the ships were all firing randomly, which seems to have been the case.
Axe, its fiction mate, its a piece of fiction Kale wrote based on the eve universe, the game mechanics do not apply, if they did then that carrier would not have blown up after a couple of strafing runs from bombers. Shots missed because its fiction and it is just based on the eve universe, the only things to come from eve were the models. gripes like shots not hitting or the bubble in lowsec or the fact that a Titan or bridges would be needed to jump the battleships is irrelevant.
There are countless videos out there where there is in-game footage and battles obey the rules of game mechanics but this vid does not claim to be one of them.

And to those going on about the fleet moving forward, it makes sense from a military point of view, your trying to drive a fleet away from your weak targets, so push in under their optimal ranges so they will be forced to pull back so that they can defend themselves from the incoming ships. Do this quick enough and your weak targets end up out of range of enemy fire.

i downloaded the 720p file, which was rather big, but i had a good feeling abt it. a few hours later, it was done and i was blown away....
i felt like i watching a big budget studio film, like those of James Cameron or from Warner Bros!!! the effects were eye popping and the 360 camera pans throughout the movie were jaw dropping!!!
if ur a true fan of the EVE life, this is one of the very very few movies you MUST download!!!
my greatest respect to Kale Ryoko and everyone involved in this production!
deserves an Oscar if you ask me :)

p.s: your opening and closing credits are honestly the BEST i've ever seen for any EVE Online movie, heck they're even better than of the box-office movies i've seen!!!

The only problem that I have to point out is that you reversed the Ship Type and Ship Class information on the ships' info-graphics. A ship type would include carrier, battleship, interceptor, frigate, cruiser, etc. The Ship Class would include Chimera, Crow, Rifter, Drake, etc. This is why you hear Chimera Class Carrier, or in a modern-day real world example, Nimitz Class Carrier. I know, it's a small nitpicky sort of thing, but it's important enough for me to point out. 
I enjoyed the movie immensely, you have a lot of talent and I hope to be able to watch more like it in the future.

Not bad, not at all bad.
I loved the effects for jumping, cynos etc. Also the HUDs were very pretty. Production etc was nice.
I kinda felt it was let down a little by the voice acting, which was somewhat hammy. The girl's voice sounded very much like it was just being read from a script into a microphone, there was no emotion in pitch/volume/tempo etc which made it somewhat unbelievable. And that was a shame when clearly so much work had gone into the visuals.

Doh, you have a fair point sir. I think I did that because I got hung up on the "Type" column we have in the overviews in-game. I'll fix this next time.

I would like to say that it was absolutely amazing work!! UED is NOT that easy to work with, plus it has a lot of functionality that is not easy to learn quickly.
Of course there were some nit picky things that are mostly game universe specific that could be brought up, but I'm not worried about and of that. Very good job man.
I also loved the UI, and I think CCP might take a clue from Blizzard and steal (borrow/hire * for UI dev?) a very good idea. 8D
Glad to see someone else using the Unreal engine.

It's hard to say really... I found myself learning something new with the engine, every single day that I used it, that was useful to the video. Arguably though, the first two months of development involved a lot of time watching tutorials and playing in the editor itself, trying to see whether the concept was feasable (making sure I could get ships into the engine, have them look and animate properly, work with cameras, etc). Then I would look towards advanced things, like trying to add skybox reflection to the ships and static objects, as well as skeletal animations for exploding hulls...
I had the original EVE Trinity engine as an excellent benchmark to work with, and getting ships into Unreal, with materials that do it justice, took time. Once I figured out the basic ins and outs of how the engine worked though, materials, kismet (logic circuits) and matinee - the rest of my time started to pour into animation and meticulous keyframing...
... Oh, and attaching engine flares to all the ships... God, that took ages! :P

Took about an hour to download last night, and finally watched it earlier. Wow, big file for a relatively short vid is my immediate thought.
Secondly, I saw "Unreal engine" and immediately thought I was going to get something akin to Clear Skies. And I suspected it might have been a spoof of it when the camera panned out to show a Tempest in multiple pieces... :P
But when it came to pass that there would be no humans or other out of ship stuff, I was both saddened AND excited. Saddened because the Unreal engine is freaking fantastic, and excited because WOAH I didn't even know it was capable of stuff like that!
The voice acting while good, didn't feel... attached. Like they were coming from you on another plane of existence.
Loving the UI and those Rifters, and plot-wise a nice touch pitting Minmatar against Caldari. Sure beats the usual clichTd pairings, and had me squirming a little as they're my two favoured races in New Eden. Many explosions were many. And spectacular.
To anyone saying "ZOMG COULD LOOK BETTER" I recommend surgery for your frikkin' eyes, and challenge you to do better. Unless you're afraid of putting together something shoddy and looking like a tool in front of the thousands who regularly download Eve videos.

Enjoyed it for the most part. Some things I think were off. I think the voice Acting was a bit poor tbh for the main character. Maybe the writing was a bit cheesy I dunno.
Loved the motion graphics and the indexing of ships etc mid space. That was lovely. Some great shots. I did feel like it just zipped from one place to another too quickly in the fight and it got a bit confusing at times but it's a battle so I guess that's to be expected.
Overall good watch. Difficult to pull off something like this too but voice acting was a big let down for me sorry. Had me cringing a lot rather than believing. :)
(Here come the fanboi horde no doubt to smite my honesty)

Once I figure out how to add subtitles to an MKV, I'll release a version with them included. I think Youtube has some subtitling capabilities, so you might see them appear there first!

Haha, I think that was my fault actually. My sound engineering skills need more practice when it comes to trying to replicate certain radio effects. Too much high end, not enough low etc. This is probably why areas are a little hard to understand. JadeMotoko actually has an extremely talented voice!
Considering I had random corp mates do the voice overs for me, I was astounded at what they managed to achieve - over Ventrilo too! Personally I think they did an excellent job. <3 Omerta Syndicate! ^_^

I love it really nice work. I also love the idea of interceptors launching from carriers. (player operated ships launching from and traveling inside caps in general for that matter :HINT CCP:)

Yeah, ships nested in a titan would be nice, and wouldnt change the gameplay that much because the titan can already bridge ppl in anyway. As for the video, it is the best eve video out imho. A guy from the old Primary Alliance turned me on to this a few months back. I also want to bump the idea of making the UI like this and hiring these two guys. Great work fellas!

When I sit back and think how the Eve would actually look if it weren't an MMO, if it were the world we get glimpses of in the chronicles and such, it looks a lot like this. Congratulations, this is the best interpretation of Eve I have ever seen.

Jumping actually would affect space like that. You can't drop a small moon's worth of mass out of nowehere into empty space and not expect consequences :P

while this was intresting to watch, it did follow the typical american, "we win the day with the smallest thing" possible formula.
and is no where near clear skies, in storyline, composition or overall quality..

This and the clear skies vids are two different entities and to compare them is to state the obvious.
It's not about which one is better, it is about whether the artists involved in the productions achieved their goal and in both cases I think they did.
