Just checked them out and it ain't so bad. Not as blobby as before, slightly less good looking. Not worth the rage tbh. Sol: A microwarp drive? In a battleship? Are you insane? They arenÆt built for this! Clear Skies - The Movie

Can't believe I waited to post 3rd page in a thread full of truth.
This is ridiculous CCP, you can SEE vertex SEAMS on the `solar flare` effect. HORRIBLE, TERRIBLE.
I am guessing you are moving all your effects over to a new shader model. But, that doesnt mean you have to make them all look like utter poo in the process.

And therein lies the problem. Implementing "Less good" effects over and over is a very bad trend to make a habit of. And CCP seems to be making a habit of it. _____________________________________ Haruhiist since December 2008

Give it a month and nobody cares/remembers what the suns looked like before.
And Jesus, how can anyone like the formless gasblobs they are now?

If you don't like them, leave the thread. You've stated your opinion and (barely) backed up your reasons for your opinion.

I love how the stars are now geodesic domes, rather than spheres. I can see the edges of the texture planes. It really is quite sad =(
System stars used to be my favourite place to chill out and watch the world go by. Now I'll just be getting cranky about the lack of effort that's gone into them. [Aussie players: join ANZAC channel] |

People like strangest things, like new "instaturn" animation, for example. Some even think that it's more realistic way to move for ship with only one(!) engine than slowly turning around. Even if we're to imagine that there are secondary engines on all ships - what's a point of main engine if secondary engines accelerate ship faster than main one? Still, people do like it and it's a great worakaround for animation team than scaling up turning animation speed with ship mass/agility.
IMO, better to have good-looking formless gasblobs than bad-looking glowing glassballs.

Just dropped on Sisi to check this out, warped to the sun, and found it quite mirthful to witness the dawn of a new age of Polyedric SunsÖ.
Seriously, CCP, I hope this is only some "work in progress", and not the final version of an "improvement"...

CCP had to change the old star graphics in preparation of the new star mining content.

Edited by: Fikreta on 22/05/2010 16:31:05 Seriously, CCP improved warp travel, autocannon fire, nosferatu... and did excellent job with planets, hats down for that. We can discuss about the gate jump effect but it's more or less ok. Problems are:
a) they started to use that same gate jump/wormhole animation for too many different things with barely noticeable variations which makes them all boring and repetitive; b) they ruined or just removed plenty of other cool effects like slingshot rays on acc. gates, engine trails, cyno, sensor boosters, web, scrams, blasters, railguns... now the stars as well.

Common CCP!! please make your game better!!! bring back the old cyno effect(possibly an even better one) keep our suns the way they are and fix the @$%$^ sound!!! make it realistic(sound from our own ship). Oh and engine trails are way cool!

I can agree with the cyno, the old sun looked like a giant space amoeba and needed to go, eve has sound?, and engine trails always sucked, good riddance.

For nanofits, trails were good for making sure you were moving the way you thought you were at a glance. But don't really make any difference now.
The new cyno jump effect is good, it shouldn't be used for jumping out through gates though. ------

Big white polyhedrons with copious amounts of flare and bloom, topped off with a scaled-up stasis webifier effect. There was a time when I enjoyed warping to stars and just spinning my ship in front of them, because they looked so nice. That time is clearly about to end. Now the stars seriously look like something you'd do for fun in 3DS Max or Maya in 30 minutes. Like, a high school 3D assignment. Bring the old one back.

Bleh.
And what do you think a star looks like?
If anything they didn't change it enough. "The issue is" that they are attempting to graphically generate realism, the new version looks more real, it is just that it is lacking some textures.
The old one looked "pretty" but it did not look like a star. So cry more

Is it really about realism? Have you recently seen a real warp effect?

Because in a game where space has friction, realism is more important than not looking like utter crap.

There is always room from artistic creativeness in those cases, but I think we have seen stars before. I will have to check to be sure though.

By all means show me a vid of what a real warp effect looks like and I will stand corrected.
And this is supposedly the sun in the visual spectrum It looks even less impressive.
Also:
Blane Xero: it is well known by now that EVE takes place in mineral oil, so yea cry more. Could you imagine how unplayable the game would be if anyone could sit on an AB or MWD and accelerate indefinitely? Graphical realism + artistic merit = a good game. Well duh??
And yea, cry more.

Well now that's a misplaced blanket statement if I ever saw one. Graphics are not a "One size fits all" deal. There are times where (and I use the term grudgingly) "Realism" fits and times where it should take a back-seat. In my opinion, this is one of the latter times, which is why I drew my previous comparison, AKA the "Mineral Oil" thing. It was to show that sometimes Realism is not the order of the day.

You mean, like something a camera drone might do? To allow you to even be looking at a star in the first place? Or even blindingly bright laz0rs on the battlefield?

The new effect is a lot better than the old one, more realistic. But could use some more improvement if they have time.
