That's done with filters.
You mean, like something a camera drone might do? To allow you to even be looking at a star in the first place? Or even blindingly bright laz0rs on the battlefield?
Not sure what this reply has to do with Hubble filters. ________________________

And yet you're having to default back to Camera Drones to justify how something becomes "Realistic"

In real space you wouldn't see laz0rz unless they are pointed right into your eyes.
EVE has nothing to do with realism so please stop trying to find "realistic" reasons for what they did with stars.

Have you never heard to not look directly into the sun
I can't even see the sun on TQ right now the light from it is so blinding.
And really how often do you fly to the sun?!
To me it just looks like a bunch of whining soley because someone changed something.
Chalk me up as a supporter. +rep CCP
P.S Bring back the old cyno effects or at least have the option for it kthnx.

Of course, it's the star. It is expected to work like that.
Heck this new star *might* even work only if they didn't have to put that overused boring ripple effect again. Also adding few animated flares here and there wouldn't hurt.
But after all, I still don't understand why they had to waste time to fix something that wasn't broken in first place, instead of working on cyno, sensor booster etc. So many problems in the graphics department and yet they decided to work on something no one has complained about.

Yes, because the recent changes to the plantary graphics and postions had nothing to do with reaslism.
I'm sure this isn't that last change people won't be happy with, but I do think people are making a "moutain" out of a "molehill" here.

I'm not sure where you get your information and/or data from - but locations of planets have not changed at all, neither are they going to. ________________________

Well, they need to remove the seam in the corona, add more polygons to the ball, because I can see the corners of the dodecahedron, add solar flares and review the sizes (350k km diameter red giant for example).
Stars definitely need more awesome. --------

No, but the types of planets at certain distances from the sun, and the stats for most planets will change in the patch to be more realistic.
To me, what it boils down to is the new methods they are using graphically and what is affected. If the new shader does great with planets, moons, and ships but not quite as well with suns, I can live with that.

"Postions" as to what type is at what orbit, among other things.
Originally by: CCP Incognito Edited by: CCP Incognito on 12/05/2010 15:01:49 Yes we have been working with a Astro Physicist to produce planet types that are more realistic to there orbits and their star systems. Changing planet radius has a game play impact on existing player items so we tried to avoid that at all costs....
...Given that there was still 150 odd planets that we had to change radius on, but that is not bad give there is 67k+ planets in eve...

I know, but kinda yes. Ice planets, for instance, won't be closest to the sun anymore. They will either change it to something more appropriate or swap it with a planet near the edge of the system. So not really moving their positions, just making what is in those positions the appropriate type.
Edit: Except apparently for the 150 they DID move.

Only changed radius of planet (not radius of orbit), they didn't physcially move, since that would play hell with moons and POSes.

Haha, fantastic! I didn't think of that one. Completely true though, I believe its due to the Rayleigh scattering effect we can see laser pen beams. In space there is no dust particles.
Very valid point...
So.... Eternum P, you will also note that that image albeit using filters is spherical not the hexagonal shape stars now look like on Sisi.

Ehrm am i the only one that has noticed taht looking at the sun on an unpolarized screen would not only burn your eyes out but also couse serius skin condisions
i dont know how the "cameradrone" (tm) works but i find it hard to belive it polarizes the sun and the sun only the fact is that when we warp to the sun we shouldnt see nothing at all, maby the slight shadow of our ship bot not even that cuz light can act as waves enveloping the ship. without polarisation your wehole 360¦ view would be white, WITH polarisation you would be able to view the sun and its flairs but everything else would be black
so thats for the RL sun arguments in this thread
however as my comment on the new sun grp. i WOULD like it if the poly-edges were fixed and flares added instead of the "gravitational disortion"

Considering what we see from Camera Drones is a signal into our brains. i dont think what we see really matters since we cant go blind from it. We not using our eyes.

I read that they were changing the suns and I too figured they would be more realistic looking, in line with how the planets changed. After looking at the links they look ****ing **** (Very bad).
CCP why do you make such a good game with even more potential, and then mess it up so drastically? Are you crazy?

Maybe this is what they mean by "Corifying" more of Eve, they're replacing all the useless redundant effects with one master effect that can be applied straight to anything!
I can't wait 'till they fix ship explosions

Yeah and for those "but it's realistic!" people... single stars, no matter how big, are not even remotely massive enough to cause gravitational lensing - if it was what CCP wanted to show with that ripple effect: http://imagine.gsfc.nasa.gov/docs/features/news/grav_lens.html

The ripple effect is supposed to be the corona, I think. For that, it's not too bad (except the seem at 3:30) but a corona alone doesn't make a star, it needs flares to be a burning ball of fusing plasma. Only stars without flares would be white dwarves and such. --------

While all in all it might not be very cool looking and all, but it seems to be lighter on my graphic card. The fan doesn't run like crazy as it does now when I go to a star. And I have a pretty decent graphic card (NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GTX+ with 512 RAM I think)
