I dont think she did that badly, most of the "annoying" things people are mentioning are simply a result of nerves, which make her not want to leave silent patches in the commentary.
She then fills this with observations that are obvious.
90% of you would do pretty much the very same thing.
My only advice to her would be:
Calm down, take a deep breath, you are not required to fill 100% of each fight with talk, it's better to NOT tell people obvious things to fill a "void"...an obvious thing which takes long to explain and then forces you to gloss over something /important/ happening.
tl;dr
she did fine, just needs to slow and calm down a tad.

Funny enough, all you do is talk, talk, talk on the forums, and you don't make a single worthwhile post. I guarantee you'd have been 100 times worse. Not to mention, CCP wanted them to talk about things that might seem obvious to veterans, hence the reason why CCP Soundwave asked Verone to explain the difference between Armor Tanking and Shield Tanking. I think anyone who has played EVE more than 5 hours knows the difference, but that's what they wanted.

You don't have to be a good athlete to form opinions about their performance. You don't have to be a good singer to say that a song sucks. Why do you have to be a good host to say Brianna doesn't know what she's doing?
Oh and btw, Brianna started calling the Sleipnir Cyclone first.

I think it was kinda cool a girl would be on the commentary team, knowing no matter what she said she would be bashed and flamed be the hordes of horny nerds playing EVE. I'm no EVE veteran, but as a player that don't really know much about the game i think she did a good job.

Never ceases to amaze me, how everyone who sits back and leaves it to others always know best. These poor old commentators would get slated by all the serious spaceship experts whatever they did/said - so props to all of them, just for doing it.

It was a win for CCP and for me. My wife had been ignoring me as I watched the tournament, even my rofl reaction to the Jitacam commentary (pls lets have that on Youtube) did not attract any attention. Once Brianna started commenting a match she came and started watching with me, asked about what was going on and, after a few matches actually said: "Maybe I should start a character of my own...". So you know, maybe we will have something to talk about in the future. |

I convinced a bunch of my friends and family to watch some of the tourney today. They had almost no knowledge of EVE, I think Brianna helped them understand what was going on better than the other commentators.
Both the expert analysis and the beginner explanations have a place. Keep up the good work

This. I was thinking just that as I listened to her commentary, she was explaining a lot of basics which I thought was nice for new players and spouses of players who are watching under sufferance!
Sure she made mistakes, but who cares how she pronounces Scimitar and states the obvious sometimes.

I enjoyed her commenting. And she said stuff like 'die in a fire' and 'kicked their faces in'. I really liked that ^_^ Also I have heard some male commenters stumble over ships names and making mistakes like just not seeing kills happen. Keep it up.

Edited by: Geana Tem on 07/06/2010 07:50:17 Brianna, this is EVE, you need to have some helluva kinda tank to do what you're dong. Stick to your guns, you're doing fine - and I'm sure - will only get better.

I'm not going to touch on the quality of her comment. For all I know she could be nervous or simply aiming her comment at the carebearish/newbish end of the spectator segment. I mean seriously, how many times did Verone get asked to comment on the difference between armour and shield tanking? Are you guys gonna tell me the lot of you didn't know all that within 6 months of playing Eve? Looks to me like the commentators are making an effort to at least occasionally make the commentary accessible to people whose experiences in either Eve or PvP are somewhat limited.
Now as for her accent... everyone has one. Her command of the English language is good enough to be understood by the masses; sounds to me like she's comfy enough speaking it. So she mangles a couple words - it's not like English language spelling is very helpful to start with. Are you aware that the combination of letters 'ough' in English can correspond to 8 different sounds? It's not obvious at all to a foreigner that the C in scimitar is silent. I'm sure all it takes is letting Brianna know the correct way to pronounce.
People will always cringe at something or other. Frankly, I cringe at the way Verone (or most English native speakers, really) pronounces some alliance/pilot names, but you know what? It doesn't matter. His commentary is good and enjoyable. I'm sure for the newer people who wanna see what all the hype about the tournament is, Brianna's so-called obvious comments are helpful.

I believe Verone started with people having their faces kicked in, but yes the commentary and banter between Verone and Brianna were rather nice to have over the matches. As for them stating the obvious, they need to keep things at a level where non-players (or new players) can also understand what's going on to some extent. Besides the action is rather fast at times, stuff dies in an instant and they're only human there's only so much they can process all at once.
I'm pretty sure Verone could give us a high-level tactical blow-by-blow analysis of the fight, but that's hard to do live and this way more people can enjoy the videos.
If people genuinely feel they are doing so badly, apply for the commentary positions yourselves next time and see if you do better. I know I certainly couldn't do it better Live.

<Irony> I'm also glad kil2 and Angel Hun are there. Otherwise we eventually might have commentators who could tell an AC from an Artillery. </Irony>
Point is: all commentators make erros. In my opinion, they all did good. They nicely talked throught the fights, filled the boring gaps with a few comments (some like those, some not, but you can't please everyone).
And about pronouncing *names*: "Skimitar" sounds perfect in my language.
And if you feel flaming Brianha for their pronouncing, you better also start swearing at the other commentators, who can't for the life of them pronounce "Arbeitaholics", "Rote Kapelle" (CCP Soundwave got that almost right once) or "Legiunea ROmana" (they even spelled that wrong in the schedule). They know for how long that those allies do take part in the tournament? They know for how long that they can't pronounce that right? Have they ever bothered to contact one of those allies and ask how it should be pronounced?
@all flamers One final word: please do us a favor and apply as commentator next time and let us all know about it so that we can rip your commentary apart. -- EVEWalletAware - an offline wallet manager |

Brianna did well on her first try, especially if you compare her comentary with that of the guy on the first day, she did much better than he did.
of course she sometimes lost the overview and did some mistakes, but she tried not always stating the obvious and she tried to improve. its a big difference if you talk to your ally mates or commentate for thousands of listeners. contrary to the guy on the first day, I plead for giving her another chance next weekend. besides: even the more experienced commentators made some faults. you wont get a perfect commentary - even if you try it yourself. i'm sure that most of you will fail epic trying to commentate.
