On 2 occasions in the past - planned DT's have been back up and running fast than they have said, many many many more have not.
also at one time, when the Delve npc stations where put in the game, several of us managed to log in about half way though the DT and register offices in delve --

Yes, you will have more SP when you log back in if you were sensible and set a skill training that allowed for an extention in the DT period.

Tell me CCP why are you totally incapable of predicting the future? Why are you not able to accurately premonise unexpected problems? Why haven't you hired Miss Cleo to tell you when unforseen problems are going to arise and your expected downtime isn't met? I demand CCP fix these problems IMMEDIATELY or I will cancel all 1.73 of my accounts! I want more free SP too.
Oh, and fix the idiots that completely fail to comprehend what it means when someone says they expect the servers to be back up at some certain time. They are far more annoying than when DT's take longer than expected.

Usually I couldn't care less about downtime but tonight I overestimated CCP. My logic being.. after the most recent kerfufle (its a word... !) with downtime, I assumed they had overestimated the patch downtime to be safe. And I really wanted to try some stuff in eve.. so I stayed up assuming I'd be able to log on at the latest 13:30.
Anyways by the time servers are up its past my bedtime now... and mummy will get cranky and hit me if i stay up. Also mummy = boss and hit = fire.. for turning up late. and drunk (maybe thats not CCP's fault.....)

Seriously, I think the programmers should have recovered more sleep before trying to tackle the SP give away. And really, a day's worth of SP is what we would have gotten if there had been no outage. So I don't really see that we are getting anything "EXTRA" OR "FREE". All this work/outage for what?
For me, server start up is the one time of day I have the freedom to put in some EvE hours. Delays during server start up mean that my playtime is seriously impacted.

Edited by: Sylthi on 29/06/2010 14:45:48 So, how much SP compensation does it earn you when they are late compensating? I mean, is it a factor, or a power maybe? Just need to know so I can start calculating. Also, does it compound? I mean, if they are late getting you the compensation for not getting you the compensation in the first place, does that factor in?
I mean, for a game that is SO heavy in math and physics, you think they could come up with more accurate time estimates. Just saying. *

Well no, since there are always going to be unexpected problems that come up. What they should do is estimate a completion time far greater than what it will actually take, rather than being optimistic and failing. ____________________

If you don't like the wait time, leave. Don't you have something better to do than whining about a company's patch days and being a little late? Seriously people get lives.
You all don't know a single thing about running a company, let alone what it takes to deploy various fixes, additions and new programs (i.e. SP pool distribution). It's not easy, so give them time. I swear it's the same everyday, you lot just get more and more impatient.
"Give us compensation!" "CCP is a horrid company!" "You idiots can't do anything right!" Honestly, if you think that way, take your money somewhere else. We don't need whining and b****ing here again and again every patch day. Go play an offline game or something that has no downtime at all, I'm sure that would be more to your liking. Don't forget to contract me your stuff on the way out. :)

Thanks for the feedback, but I really should have done a /sarcasm on and /sarcasm off switch, because I was being VERY sarcastic.
TBH, I am shocked that CCP is compensating us ANYTHING. In the 7 years I have been here this is the most meaningful compensation I can EVER remember them having done. I mean, they have credited the entire customer base a day or two of time in the past, but back-dated SP is MUCH better.
So, yeah, I can wait. It's just sadly funny is all that you'd THINK there would have been some pressure for them to meet the deadline this time.
Cheers! *

There is one single question. Why they are setting the expected downtime every time too early. Everyone would be happy if they say:" Ok guys extended downtime till 15:00 UTC and they finish their job at 14:30 and not one hour here and one additional there. Next time CCP when you announce an expected downtime end publish the time you need and not the time you think it takes in a perfect world :). This is no flame no whine only a suggestion.

True. But constantly failing at job-time completion estimates isn't lunacy, in just plain incompetence; no matter how you slice it. *

Yeah, I find it an odd an irksome habit of theirs to extend the estimated downtime completion by like half an hour 4-5 times a patch. It makes you feel that the estimate is exact when they give an exact time a mere hour in the future, but that slips by and all you get is another adjusted estimate.
Seems kinda funny though that we are stuck grumbling over extended downtime deploying the reward system to compensate us for extended downtime, coz I saw precious little else in those patch notes...

If I might be so bold as to make a constructive suggestion, perhaps the folks who estimate the downtime could adopt a policy of under-promising and over-delivering. Add 2-3 hours to the actual DT estimate to set people's expectations, and then when the servers are up before that, people marvel at the fact CCP always gets done faster than anticipated.
...or remove the time estimates altogether. The estimates create reasonable expectations, and missing the marks creates dissatisfaction that's wholly avoidable.

There is a bit of unfairness in this, Australian players losing basically a day worth of play while a lot of Americans will just log in when they normally do, download the patch and don't notice any lost play.
So, would random downtimes be better? So it's not European players snatching all the nice ABC ores right after DT?

CCP do not do this deliberately. They don't build up your hopes falsely, just to tickle their sadistic urges. **** happens, particularly in software deployments where you are dealing with such a gigantic live system. Very, very few large scale deployments go according to plan.

I don't expect that CCP are bothered by the whining at all, in fact, probably quite the opposite. It must be quite financially encouraging to see that a large number of your subscribers entire existences revolve around your monthly subbed internet spaceship game. That's the sort of player base addiction you can take to the bank..........!

Yes there is some unfairness in this, but this is one of the pitfalls that comes with being worldwide and also single-server. You know the deal when you sign up, and when I was in Aus (east coast) for a year, DT served as a great reminder to **** off to bed so I was awake to go to work tomorrow. Sucks more for West Aussie TZ though, I agree.
Random DT is not the answer (because I don't think there's really a question about DT itself). Big releases on the other hand never start at downtime, they start much earlier. Perhaps they should start all these smaller patches before DT as well, with the aim of having the server back in time for normal DT, which gives them an hour of screw-up time by default.
The US is obviously the biggest market, and their schedules are always designed to cause the least impact there (commercial sense of course). Perhaps this would be an idea?

Edited by: Zverofaust on 29/06/2010 16:02:15 I really feel sorry for CCP. I've been developer on some comparitively tiny indy projects and I really hate criticism or when things go wrong -- and I only have to deal with a few dozen players. I can only imagine the nervous breakdowns some CCP employees have every time this **** happens (which admittedly is quite frequent).
I'm pretty bitter about it but I've also accepted that Eve is not some life-sustaining sustenance, the lack of which threatens my well-being and livelihood. It's a game, and there are quite literally thousands and thousands of other games out there to choose from if I really have an irreconcilable problem with CCP or Eve. I'll still play it and so will most of you.
Edit: Also, I lolforgot to set more training time on one of my accounts, so it stopped training just before DT started. I meant to last night but I got tired and fell asleep. Any chance of more reimbursement CCP? ^_^
