I have been flying Gallente for more then 2 years now, including entire T2 cruiser line, mostly HACs. Got some nice skills in gunnery/drones including Med Blaster Spec V to maximize Astarte DPS
Short and simple, is it worth investing 400mil into a ship + unknown amount(say 100-200+ mil) into fittings and not having it dying to the first T1 BC??
And base, fitting tips would be also good, no need for exact fitting setups, since its a Sub-System based vessel. But general tips would be welcome, like gank/tank tips or gun choise tips.
Tnx

IMHO it is the only one of t3 that do not worth it. It works greatly if you plan to use it in one of two very specialized roles then and well worth the price.
The roles are:
THE BRICK - you can get stupid amount of EHP from Proteus so it will work perfectly as baiting ships and so on. MELTAGUN - it can get huge damage with ok tank as well. But you have to get to point-blank range to apply it that is extremly difficult for such slow vessel. So it works greatly if someone provide warp-in at 0 or for undock pvp.
Both of those roles are usually needed in hisec/lowsec pvp :(

fit good decent buffer tank(150 to 200k ehp), rails and long rang points. Just play out as a heavy arazu and your buddies will love you

hi n0thing 0/
I ve started a proteus a few days ago with the same questions. I can insure you that it is a very good ship and it's worth. In fact, in such a ship you can see Gallentean pilots happy to train gallentean skills...
I ve a few tips to give you, include fits and tactics. Just drop me a line IG. I will be happy to share informations with an ex mate.

The Proteus is worth its price. It's quite horrible for PVE, but makes and excellent PVP ship. To summarize, because most has been said:
- Buffered bait ship: 2 or 3 plates, drone or hybrid subsytem gives you a great brick - Buffered blaster boat: downgrade a bit the tank, and you'll get a great blasterboat, slow as hell but great DPS/tank - Covert ganker: either choose the Super-Arazu as someone said; with LR point and rails, or use a faction scrambler with the appropriate subsystem, and you can makes something that does 350-400 DPS, and tanks either around 500 DPS in an active config, or a 20k + armor buffer.
You can also make a decent boat for close range armor HACs gangs (bonused point and crazy buffer)

Yep, of course it depends on your intended environment, targets and tactics. Properly fit Prot will make mincemeat out of pretty much any BC. Ehp and Dps are also quite scalable to your wishes. If you spend a little more you can have 1k dps with decent buffer, or 450k-900k ehp still with some dps left. Or something in between.
It's not the best cloaky ship I'd say (covops fit), but there are some specialized uses for Prot there too.

Except the tengu, which is epically awesome all the time, the t3s are only "worth it" in some very specific roles.
For the proteus that'd be: LR scrams on a stupidly sturdy hull Okish gank with a cov cloak Decent gank with great buffer OP buffer
So, if you find yourself in situations where you need that role filled and where you won't die a lot then yes, it's a great ship.
SP loss on t3 losses is brutal.

Yeah, exactly how critical is it to get SubSystems skill to V? I mean IV isnt that brutal, but how bad is bonuse loss? ---

Originally by: n0thing Yeah, exactly how critical is it to get SubSystems skill to V? I mean IV isnt that brutal, but how bad is bonuse loss?
Depends on the subsystem: -The offensive/defensive ones are pretty critical offering large increases in dmg (often 2-3 individual bonuses tied to the offensive) and tank. -The electronic one (at least for the proteus) is usually scram range, so again, pretty amazing. -You can probably get away with the engi/prop one a bit lower.
Ejecting or logging off before your ship dies prevents SP loss. Which skill you lose is random. So if you have 3 of them at 5 and 2 of them at 4 you have 3/5 chance of losing a lvl 5 skill.
I've found timing the ejecting to be surprisingly tricky.

How about, trying to shield-tank this thing and go gank on it?
However after some trying, including some EFT check, it keeps giving me around 570 dps with even CN Ammo taken into account and 3x MFS IIs.
And shield buffer gets rather weak, fields around 40k ehp but that it. ---

Hmm. Just realized the second fit was a bit fail since I didn't notice the free PG to allow for a 1600mm plate which gives it another 50k EHP. So changed the post to add that.
yep after seeing these fits, the proteus is definitely useless and only fits a few niches. nevermind the bs ehp and dps on a cruiser. and it only goes 1.2km/s?!?! man thats horrifically slow. /sarcasm

One of setups Im in trouble to figure out is this ^^.
The buffer setup is quite easy to build, after you spend some time in EFT and looking at items in-game.
Apparently Im cant afford plugging implant sets _and_ fly 500mil ship, so yeah you get around 200k EHP with good skills.
As for the cloaky version, I tryed something along lines of 2 stealth sub-systems, but I end up with:
450 dps w/ Neutron IIs 63k EHP and a cap boosted Med Repper. Oh and a 15km scram range.
Problem is,
- theres no drones, even no place for 1 Light T2 wave. - if you take off the armor repper and go with buffer, how your planning on repping yrself if your alone in no-stn space?

Edited by: erdna xela on 23/07/2010 12:16:17 I have the armor rep, enought buffer to deal with my ONLY target, med rep to keep me alive in case off. 1 set of fighting drones and 1 wave of ECM drones.
The main problem with all set up in game is the same for T3 ship. If you want dps you have to buffer it. If you want to tank, your dps will be lowered. But with the T3 you have the opportunity to speedtank, so with a good buffer and resist and one armor rep you will be able to survive in most of situation. IF YOU PICK YOUR TARGET. I test it in low sec and WH, pretty dangerous place to be with this kind of ships without any rep. I use to gank and gtfo, rep while in warp. One rep doesn't remove many resist/buffer but can give you more time sitting in the system or in position to catch more targets.
Exemple on sisi (i know but sisi has the advantage to confront you at overpowered ships with a dedicated fit to burn you)
So on sisi : tanked Drake - powned but slowly (risk to be ganked) tanked harbinger - powned pretty fastly harbinger dps - powned without any trouble tanked hurricane - powned fastly hurricane dps - the faster powning of history cruiser - fresh meat BS - too long to pwn but they can't hit you. Inty - drone's game
On TQ Plexing drake -> under a minut to gank. industrials ships -> too bad you were anchoring a POS... POD -> Surprise !!!
So you can attack until BC T1 sized without "any" trouble. Tanked drake are too risky because of time. Cruiser T2 depents of which type. Recon --> to avoid. Rapier can't kill you but keep you uncloak on grid and you will flash like a santa three. You have a chance against a falcon... but i will not try it.
So i don't have many other exemple to give you on TQ cause i just test the fit right now. But i think you can imagine yourself the limits and the fun with the test/kill i said before.

Tengu does this, with ~13km greater rage and a bigger buffer/atvie tank. Also it can select damage types. Proteus does have drones though, with space to carry a few sets of ecm.. ***The EVE servers and their patches*** |

forget drones on proteus if you play it in this way. Take fighting drones if you play it short range and/or ECM drones to escape. If you use rails, take only the ECM drones, and take moar !

Ok, well, after doing some more research, both in-game and in EFT I ended up with those 2 configs:
Config A
Has Neutron II guns, does 473 DPS with Caldari Navy ammo, 2x MFS II. Got 56-57k ehp(armor hp is 11773), with 67/79/90/57 resistances, and a Medium Rep. Can go up to 1030m/s. Rigs are 1x Anti-Exp dmg, 1x Trimark, 1x Hybrid dmg rig. No drones at all.
Config B
Has Ion II guns, does 433 DPS with Caldari Navy Ammo, 2x MFS II. Got 46-47k ehp(armor hp is 7547), with 74/83/92/63 resistances, and a Medium Rep. Can go up to 1103m/s. Rigs are 1x Anti-Exp dmg, 1x Trimark, 1x Hybrid dmg rig.
Has 100m3 drone bay, with ECM/Light T2 drones. Total DPS with wave of T2 light drones is 533 DPS.
So? What would be better off? I mean, Id say at first that Config A is good, but then, it has no drones, its slower and heavier due to 800mm Armor Plate, while Config B has drones(scare tacklers away?), is slightly faster and agile, but has low armor amount??
Please advices, seen tengu another day with 2x Shield Extenders, and 3x Shield rigs. Went 0.o at it, compared to my poor setups. ---

I noticed from the description of the covert reconfiguration module that it has a Jump Harmonics Modifier of 2, the same as a Recon ships, SB's and Covops. Am I correct in assuming that the Proteus can use a a Covert Jump Portal? if so, this could make an interesting addition to cloaked gangs.
