Who remembers this game? Who remembers flying down the side of a battleship from one end to another taking about 30 seconds? Who remembers the bombers you could fly? Who remembers interceptors shooting down torpedos? Who remembers their jaws dropping when watching the Colossus engage that Shivan battleship?
Damn I miss that game. I have the first and the second along with the expansion for the first. Good story, excellent graphics and sounds (at the time), briliant shooter I thought. Weaving in and out of destroyers and battleships along with their awesome beam weaponary was just soo much fun.
Anyone else remembers this game? |

I remember flying between two battle ships in a nebula. I couldn't see either of the ships but then suddenly you could hear their beam weapons charging and they started slugging it out with me dog fighting between them dodging the enemy ships and the beam weapons cris crossing the combat area.
I'm going to have to re install that now....

Edited by: Cetshwayo on 21/12/2004 16:00:28 Oh yes. fighting in nebulas was amazing as well. Can hardly see anything and suddenly this huge red beam crosses your path lol. Insta-death if you flew in it . The shear size of the ships and beam weapons were awe-inspiring. Shame Volition is no more

Loved freespace, the first and second were both great. I loved doing a bombing run on a capitol ship. The online play was fun also.
On the box it showed the scale of the ships, huge capitol ships and the tiny little ships. Wish there could have been more in that series.
These are just my views and they could be wrong.....often wrong if you listen to my wife. |

Remember when i first got freespace, the intro blew me away, had never seen cgi quite so nice.
That was just the setup for what was an amazing game, it was just so fluid compared to the other space games id played before.. colony wars ect....
Think the best memory was the sound of the shivan fighters zooming past you... amazing.
Tempted to reinstall, few years ago i bought the fs2/cfs double pack for a tenner, be well worth visting it back for christmas.

LOVED both of them. Can't get FS1 to run under XP though. But there is a way to port the missions to FS2.
Since they realeased the source code to FS2 leagally on the net, there are tons of great mods for it including an awesome Bab-5 mod. EVE-I.com~THE Info source |

LOL I am sorry, I think I have it back home. Many of the Freespace sites (I think one was FS central or something).
There are still FS servers up amazingly enough last I checked, but they were laggy and not very full. It would be awesome if someone actually brought this back to life. I would love to fly with and against you guys in FS, especially the BAB 5 missions!!!!

I just got my FX5700U today. I reinstalled the stereo drivers for it, and tried Freespace 2.
It's really freaking..AWESOME!
I've only tried it with the Open Freespace program (posted earlier in this thread somewhere) but it rocks! Seeing Freespace with depth...I'm giddy with excitment.
All you need is a pair of 3D glasses (page flipped or anaglyph (red/blue glasses like you find in a comic book)) and an NVIDIA card with the latest detonators (one that can easily play Freespace, my old GF4MX420 choked a bit here and wasn't nearly as smooth as this new card is). Head to http://www.nvidia.com/object/3dstereo_45.23 to get the Stereo drivers. Don't worry about the 2K_XP part, I'm running ot on Win98 just fine. Once installed, you need to reboot (these drivers are complimentary to the Detonators and work fine with any Detonators newer than the 45.23s. I'm using the 53.04s right now). After that, you control the drivers by going to Start>Settings>Control Panel>Display>Settings>Advanced>-You Card's Name->Stereo Properties. Select your galsses type and click 'Enable by Hot Key'. You'll be given a short medical test to make sure this isn't going to cause seizures or something. If you can't apparently see the block sticking out (even after moving your head around) then press escape, hit no, and go back to what you were doing. If you can (99% of you will be able to) then press escape and hit yes. Set the seperation to 10% and press okay (more if you use page-flipped, like to 15 or 20).
Now load freespace open. Start playing a mission or multiplayer game. As soon as you are in, press CTRL+T. Now you should see 3D. Good luck to ya. Oh, and make ABSOLUTE sure you press CTRL+T again (to turn off 3D) before you win/lose a mission or before you enter a menu screen (like pressing escape or F2 or something similar) because the menus are messed up in 3D. You will also see a performance hit when 3D is enabled (the card is working double for both eyes) and there will be a slight performance hit even when stereo 3D is off in all 3D games. To turn this off, just go back to stereo properties and press 'Disable' and OK.
For those of you w/out 3D glasses (yes, all of you), you can get them here:
Anaglyph (Red/Blue.; note that higher-quality glasses means less eye strain and headaches and more enjoyable 3D-ing):
http://www.berezin.com/3d/3dglasses.htm <- I use thier Mirachromes and hihgly reccomend it! http://www.rainbowsymphony.com/3danaglyph.html http://www.3dglasses.net/free3dglasses.htm <-Free glasses, but they are very cheap and can't be used for long. Be warned.
Page-Flipped (note: The higher the refreshrate of the card AND your monitor, the better. About 140Hz and up is HIGHLY reccomended to stop eye strain (the refresh rate is effectively halved for page-flipped goggles since only one eye sees the monitor at a time). These are quite an investment and are way too expensive for those who just want to 'see what it's like'

I love these games! One of if not the most awe-inspiring moments in any game i've played was in FS2 when you are in the nebula with your two corvettes feeling invincible, then the comms channels are filled with panic chatter of something jumping in that's off the scale...
Then you see not the ship but the four beams (well one beam since it's all that will fit on your screen, even being a few kilometers from it!) build up... then you see the silhouette of that spider shape on the scanner as command screams over the radio "jump out! Jump out!"
I just froze when that first happened, then died.
I love the way the game builds you up with patriotism for the alliance as you crush the rebels then the shivans, and the way it then bashes you down into a feeling of desperation as the alliance is forced to retreat in response to what you find at the end of the game
And actually, I liked the intro to FS1 better. That poor panicking pilot, the scale of his tiny fighter as the Lucifer jumped in! Why didn't the bloody traffic control lady listen to him! ------------
We come in peace. And tanks. |

Yea the cutscenes in the first one were very nicely done. Like someone else said, how is it possible for a company like Volition that made this masterpiece to go bust? I think it's probably due to the failure that is Red Faction.

I loved both Freespace and Freespace 2. In fact I just downloaded Freespace 2 again from BT, one of the CD's of my original copy got *****ed and I haven't been able to play it since =(
Both great games though, the best space combat sim I've ever played. It's a shame it had to end before FS3 came out.
I remember weaving around enemy fighters picking off Helios warheads before they hit my capital ship, then pulling a quick 180 to rip apart a pursueing Basilisk and hitting the afterburners while launching countermeasures as missile warnings sounded on my HUD. Or TAGing an enemy fighter and watching my capital ship's beam turrets pulverise it an instant later, while flak shells exploded all around me. Massive beams washing over capital ships and cruisers, totally vaporizing an enemy fighter that happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time in the process.
Or dashing through Shivan space piloting a stolen Shivan fighter, trying to avoid detection while scanning subsystems of the massive Sathanas class juggernauts, while Sathanas after Sathanas jumped into the system mounting for a full scale attack on Capella.
Was a great game =)

Mmm FS 1/2 rocked the cashbaa Best game ever to bee made. Broke meh first joystick from playing to much FS, the atmosphere that game managed to create has yet to bee topped.
Marriage betwen FS series and EvE would bee innteresting -------------------------------------------------> What I look forward to is continued immaturity followed by death.

Nah you can find the iso's of the disks out there, specifically on Bittorrent is where I got mine. And this isn't illegal, because I bought the game the day it hit the shelves ;)
In fact, I convinced my parents to buy a new computer just so I could play it =D

Just finished it for god knows how many'th time, still soooo damn good Shame there's no immediate replayability, but give it a year... Maybe there's some decent mods.
Looks great without anti-aliasing too, jagged edges not too noticeable, pretty rare.

The replayability is there, with FRED2 you can create your own missions and even your own campaigns, just need to get some people to put some of those together and it's like a whole new game again =)

How does this game work? I mean, do you need a Joystick? If the game is that good, i might buy it...

It's your standard fair space shooter, think freelancer, starlancer ect...
Blast um up, joystick required.
For me did it better than most, it just felt dead right. When it first came out i couldn't put it down for a while, originals better imho than the sequel, something you just have to try.

Mouse+keyboard works ok for me, but joystick would be great (those flight-sim ones).

Do not listen to these joystick-lovers! you don't need a joystick. to be a very good fighter there you need to familiarize yourself with the numpad. not kidding here btw, it's uber for tracking in freespace. (i know i kicked KD's ass with guns there just cause i use numpad and he joystick) ------------------- :: finite horizon :: killboard ::

I miss FRED2 Made some amazing missions for that game. Having a massive fleet (bigger than the ones in EVE probably) with beams shootin everywhere is just simpy briliant. First time I played the last mission (and lost it obviously ) I knew I just had to keep going at it. It's just a simply briliant game and I doubt any other space-sim can best it.

lol the first time I played the last mission I tried desperatly to keep all the ships alive, I must have redone the mission a dozen times before I finally kept every transport except for 1 alive, only to find out it didn't matter one bit =P
Heck even multiplayer was a great time, I'm still ****ed they didn't make a Freespace 3 =(

"to my knowlege, there is a freespace 3 in the works, derek smart is making it. yes you heard me, derek smart, grab your guns, its time for a raid."
From what i remember, Derek Smart toyed with the idea of buying the rights to the title... but the outcome was, the arcade'ish concept of Freespace doesn't really fit with his idea of 'fun' so he's going to stick to making games set in his own universe...

"I remember stories of a glorious civilisation, of cities with spires that reached the sun, of a blue planet with vast seas, of people with myths of humanity everlasting, of children who saw in the embers of dying stars the destiny of their race, and they hurled themselves into the void of space with no fear.
They say our people have no present, only a past filled with horror and a future they can only dream of.
Now we forge a new alliance to guard the tomb of space, and to find within its cold expanse the salvation of our race." |
