On account of having an interest in the fascinating language, I tend to give my ships icelandic names or use skaldic kennings.
Partly because of the cool Viking appearance and partly because it's a great way to remember vocabulary.
Let's see:
Got a Curse called Fjandinn (a mild Icelandic curse word :P)
A variety of hurricanes with names like Sl+ªmtve+¦ur , Eldingar, Sverd and a nice Sleipnir called H+íbrj+¦str.
Also have a Vagabond called Ekkif+¡nir+¡ :) Free internet to anyone who knows why :P

Sometimes i will jump in a shuttle or small frig and name it Bait if i want to AP travel for a bit. Most people leave a ship named Bait alone.
My Destroyer is my current salvager, it is name Little Janitor. This way when i get my Noctis it can be the Big Janitor.
My probing frigate is name the Nosy Neighbor.
My vexor is C0nVex.
My Mymidon is Luck's End. I did that because either it was the end of my relying on luck to be good at missions now that i had a reliable craft and skills. But also the idea that when you face it, your luck has run out. |

I typically name my ships by some obscure (or not so obscure) reference to the hull name. Gallente ships (typically named after Greek/Mesopotamian dieties) end up named after the same deity from another culture (my Ishkur is named Ramman for example).
A few of the names I can think of off-hand:
Helios - Sol Invictus
Orca - Space Slug (it's just so slow)
Noctis - Space Hoover
Loki - Sehaninie (it's surprising how few real trickster gods there are)
I also have names for Wolf, Cane, and Tornado hulls I have (and some others), but I'm blanking on them ATM. |

Because I always thought the Megathrons looked like the ship in Starblazer, I gotta '1337' thing going on that toon, and II cuz it's the second I've owned thus far. Just a personal way of keeping score.
My retriever is called Fetch :P
I don't really bother to rename my other ships. Although I did call my retriever "Orca" for a while, just for s's and g's. |

Others ships are usually named with slang for umm tacky descriptions of either sexual acts or female body parts.

I name based on size of vessel...
Most Cruisers, BC 's and all BS sized vessels get names or beasts from ancient mythology. For example:
Drake - "Thor"
Megathron - "Scylla"
CNR - "Achilles"
Raven - "Hephaestus"
Caracal - "Athena"
Rupture - "Gorgon"
Blackbird - "Loki" (because... ECM... is... tricky tricky)
Tengu - "Chimera"
Smaller vessels and some BC's are generally named after animals or weapons, though there are some exceptions. For example:
A/C Rifter - "Chainsaw"
Navy Comet - "Nodachi"
Blaster Merlin - "Cougar"
Arty Thrasher - "Vulture"
Navy Slicer - "Salamander"
Daredevil - "Gladius"
Exceptions...
Hookbill - "Fury"
Rokh - "...a puncher's chance." (so named because I managed to cap 2 'Canes and a Merlin in this bird alone) |

Frigates are always fillies and colts. Mane Six are Cruisers. BC's are BG Ponies. Battleships are Chrysalis, Discord, Celestia.

I haven't picked a meaningful name for a long time. Can't say I used any great historical events or literary ideas to help formulate names, but here they are some of my ships:
Combat Dominix: TrxR4Kidz - this was the first time I tried to come up with a coolish name.
Repper Domi: repXXorix
Ratlesnake fleet: 1) Fluffy Buny, 2) Good Ship Lolipop, 3) Mr. Bubbles, 4) Cupcakes
Thrasher: used as a salvage boat: Thrash Compacter
Cyclone : used as salvage boat: Recyclone

Fenrir : Uncle Fenrir

I tend to name combat ships with stuff lifted from various scifi novels, I use a lot of culture references normally lifted from here. Non combat stuff gets random names depending on ship function
For example
Noctis : Noctopus Prime
Caldari Shuttle : Tesco Value Badger (all shuttles get named Tesco Value ..racial hauler)
Probeing ship : Cartman
War hasn't been fought this badly since Olaf the Hairy, High Chief of all the Vikings, accidentally ordered 80,000 battle helmets with the horns on the inside. |
