Hey, I just simply wonder where you got your ship's name from?
My ship I choosed for this thread is my Iteron Mk5. It's an awesome ship and I fell in love with her the first time I saw her. I choosed to name her after a famous song and freighter named "Edmund Fitzgerald"
The song I made for my boat represents multiple accidents and experiences I have with my ship. I will start from the top and explain them all to you, so in the end, you might understand just how much this ship means to me!
"The legend lives on from the Chippewa on down of the big lake they called "Gitche Gumee." The lake, it is said, never gives up her dead when the skies of November turn gloomy. With a load of iron ore twenty-six thousand tons more than the Edmund Fitzgerald weighed empty, that good ship and true was a bone to be chewed when the "Gales of November" came early. "
This part represents the huge cargo hold of the Iteron Mk5. It also represents each time I get locked at a gate or undock. How I fear for the worst and can be compared to when a sailor notices a little stronger winds than usual.
"The ship was the pride of the American side coming back from some mill in Wisconsin. As the big freighters go, it was bigger than most with a crew and good captain well seasoned, concluding some terms with a couple of steel firms when they left fully loaded for Cleveland. And later that night when the ship's bell rang, could it be the north wind they'd been feelin'?"
This part represents that my ship, is the pride of my corporation aswell as me. It also shows how good of a Captain I am and how good my fellow mates are. Also you can se the obvious meaning of me "concluding some terms with a couple of steel firms". That obviously means me doing some hauling for me friends and picking up various courier contracts.
This last two parts are quite emotional for me and I which to share them with you and hope you understand how important my ship is to me.
"Does any one know where the love of God goes when the waves turn the minutes to hours? The searchers all say they'd have made Whitefish Bay if they'd put fifteen more miles behind 'er. They might have split up or they might have capsized; they may have broke deep and took water. And all that remains is the faces and the names of the wives and the sons and the daughters."
This part right here represents the danger of the Amarr - Jita highway. When I wrote this song I had a special journey in mind, it was a dark night here in New Eden. I had just left from Amarr in my Iteron Mk5 and was heading towards Jita to deliver some goods. You can see the part naming "God" (Amarrian space) and how "When the waves turn the minutes to hours?" represents the long journey I embark on. The last few lines is when I lost an Iteron Mk5 on that journey. How the families home in Amarr miss us and want to know what happened to me and my crew.
And as a final I saved the most emotional part.
"The wind in the wires made a tattle-tale sound and a wave broke over the railing. And ev'ry man knew, as the captain did too 'twas the witch of November come stealin'. The dawn came late and the breakfast had to wait when the Gales of November came slashin'. When afternoon came it was freezin' rain in the face of a hurricane west wind.
When suppertime came the old cook came on deck sayin'. "Fellas, it's too rough t'feed ya." At seven P.M. a main hatchway caved in; he said, "Fellas, it's bin good t'know ya!" The captain wired in he had water comin' in and the good ship and crew was in peril. And later that night when 'is lights went outta sight came the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald."
This two parts right here... They are actually from the infamous event of 'Burn Jita'. The first out of the two parts represents my struggle to make profit during those horrible nights, with the hurricane wind being the gankers who roamed my seas then. The last out of the two part is the time... The time when... When Edmund sank(To later be ressurected from the depths of the space ocean)! I was actually moving two Gilas that time, it was my final journey for the night. I was just one jump from Jita, it was so close! Then they got me!
I saw they locked me and my shields were gone, my armor and my structure in the secound after that. All was lost! Out there in the ocean was me and my pod... My crew didn't make it, neither did "Big Fitz".

Well.
I have an alphanumeric naming system.
The first three letters correspond to the ship's role. The first letter is for the purpose of the ship. M for Missions, I for industry/mining, H for hauling, etc.
The second letter is for the weapons systems on the ship. R is for rails, H for heavy missiles, U for autocannons, etc.
The third letter corresponds to the first letter of the ship hull.
Following these three letters are a dash and 3 numbers, which are sequential for each ship version. The first one is always 001. If one gets blown up, or another one with the same fitting is made, then 002.
And after that, I choose a random Empire system, constellation, or region name to round it all off.
Makes it easy to see what ships do what... At least in my mind.
EDIT: So, an example is my Rifter. It is named 'PUR-001 Josameto'
P for PvP, U for Autocannons, R for Rifter, and 001 since it's the first one I've made. |

I am a huge fan of Iain Banks "Culture" novels and so I use a fair few of the ship names from there.
E.g. Brutix blaster boat - Dramatic Exit Talos - Size isn't everything Dominix - Space Monster Myrmidon - Uninvited Guest

I occasionally do this as well, especially when travelling through low sec. Other names are "Lastesel" (load-donkey) for my badgers, or "flunder" (flatfish) for the drake. PvP frigs are usually the ship type and a number to keep count, e.g. Rifter II and so on. |

I actually fight a futile fight against the burger-like throwaway nature of EVE spaceships by giving them names that mean something to me. In RL and most of the sci-fi canon, ships are unique. Even mass-produced sailboats are treated as unique by their owners, and as the size grows, the more unique they become.
In EVE, a ship generally has less significance than a common car. I wish they were somehow less burger, and more Enterprise and Millenium Falcon.
Gallente ship design and game physics remind me of the ocean, and the wonderful creatures that inhabit the depths. So, I choose appropriate and cool-sounding latin sea creature names for my ships. Name is attached to hull+fitting, and subsequent incarnations get a number added to them.
For example my cloaky Proteus is Mokarran, or the great hammerhead shark. That's what it looks like, and that's what it is, an apex predator striking from the depths. Myrmidons are seahorses, Talos is Barracuda.
Romantic, yes, nerdy, sure, but I do love spaceships. And the oceans, too.

WW2 till today... like the Kawashima Maru, a bulk freighter. Not all names come from warships.
Japanese ships are mostly named after cities or landmarks. Chinese after animals or famous people. "I wish to have no Connection with any Ship that does not Sail fast for I intend to go in harm's way."
