Thought I'd post some pictures of StuffÖ that happened today for those interrested.

As you can see we had a decent bonfire burning in our datacenter today. While not the primary reason for the delayed patch tomorrow this was definitely a pretty big contributing factor. This morning we had an alarm triggered on a powersupply in one of the bladecenters containing the Singularity testcluster. When reseating the powersupply which is part of a routine troubleshooting procedure before replacing with a spare part it somehow mysteriously, even magically (cause yet undetermined, and this is the first time we have this happen) managed to cause an internal short circuit in the bladecenter, completely fry one of the blades and seriously singe a few of the others. As you can imagine this caused us to immediately pull the bladecenter out of service and thus shutting down our primary public test server while we were juggling hamsters between cages to make StuffÖ work again.
Having Singularity, which is our primary staging server, shut down for several hours on the day before a big deployment is far from ideal, in fact it is critical as we use every hour right up until the last minute to test, retest and test again that everything is working. So add this to other issues that we were dealing with today and the prudent thing to do was to delay the patch and have a second dress rehearsal tomorrow, this time hopefully without incident.
Oh and by the way, the hamsters are still alive if somewhat visibly shaken.

See, this is what happens when you dont pay the Hamsters enough. They go on strike and instead of setting steel barrels of wood alight for warmth, they set light to your blades instead. I demand a pay rise for the Hamsters, before they burn out a TQ blade

FYI, the servers are located in London, UK - it's getting colder though, but probably not cool enough to keep the servers at optimum operating temps

Fixed and yes it was inappropriate of Tuxford to do that. I have a final on wednesday. My other account was to launch a fully purchased bought and paid for by no one but myself grinded isk Thanatos when the refunded SP was supposed to be brought in. So yes. I'm upset. Of all the people that have are ****ed over this. I'm probably one of only a few that actually have something of value riding on it. A corp mate basically tried to compare his fighters 5 delay to this. There's more to it than that. A lot more.
I would however like to know the OTHER reasons this patch was delayed. The fire's a nice bit but it's not the primary factor. So then since you guys are watching this. Point blank what the hell started this boulder down the mountain?

That blades should be preserved and be like a plaque or something. Sometimes PC parts looks good in office decorations.
Wonder how bad it smell too...
I want CCP to show them in Fanfest so people could smell how fried hamsters smell.

CCP: Try relogging, clearing the cache, reinstalling the server and filing a bug report. I can find nothing in my logs to indicate you have a problem. As such you cannot be reimbursed for your "loss".

The physical location of the server cluster _IS_ in London. As far as we know. They never claimed they moved it to Iceland. Just because the "main IP" for EVE in general is listed as belonging in Iceland doesn't mean that's where the server is. Heck, geoip databases hardly ever claim anywhere near 100% accuracy anyway.
P.S. At least TQ is in London, but I assume that also goes for SiSi and Multiplicity. Although that's not guaranteed. SiSi and Multiplicity might be physically located in Iceland.

So...I'm figuring that the PS was drawing high current and the molded plug was getting a bit soft. When you reseated it, one of the supply pins in the softened plastic got folded over or pushed into another causing a dead short.
Wouldn't be the first time I've seen this. Next time advise your techs to see if the male and female plastic socket are hot and soft. If so, don't reseat it till it cools...and it will do it again, so might as well assume the PS is shot.

Word of advice:
Don't use IBM Blade system, it sucks. IBM spends too much money on "Smarter Planet" advertisement and big heavy unrealistic system like Grid Computing or System Z (WTF) ... Best blade system so far from the view of a CIO is HP Blade Matrix structure, also open for EVE Data Center a better road map of using not just x86 base server, but maybe (at some point in the future moving to a new Tukwila processor for high-end computing.
Seriously, EVE Lag can be greatly improved (reduced) if CCP decide to invest a bit further in the fundamental infrastructure technology, given how much tech-savvy CCP want to appear to be.
Just stop fooling with SMB (yes, I called it Small Business), start thinking like a serious Enterprise.

Obviously this is a hot topic, and there have been many inflamed customers setting the forum ablaze over this malfunction. While I'm sure the incident will spark debate for days to come, let's douse the flamewar before it begins. It seems your server may have strayed too close to a 'cosmic anomaly' or caugh fire due to pilot error, or burned with fire therefore the logs (logically therefore) show nothing, or more honestly - we are an insurance company, you didn't actually expect us to pay on a claim did you? I have to disagree with that. While I never was a great IBM proponent, I always found their hardware to be as good if not better than anyone else's. Not faulting HP hardware, they as very good too, but ask HP why they are still 2nd fiddle to IBM in the business market.

As you can see we had a decent bonfire burning in our datacenter today. While not the primary reason for the delayed patch tomorrow this was definitely a pretty big contributing factor. This morning we had an alarm triggered on a powersupply in one of the bladecenters containing the Singularity testcluster. When reseating the powersupply which is part of a routine troubleshooting procedure before replacing with a spare part it somehow mysteriously, even magically (cause yet undetermined, and this is the first time we have this happen) managed to cause an internal short circuit in the bladecenter, completely fry one of the blades and seriously singe a few of the others. As you can imagine this caused us to immediately pull the bladecenter out of service and thus shutting down our primary public test server while we were juggling hamsters between cages to make StuffÖ work again.
Having Singularity, which is our primary staging server, shut down for several hours on the day before a big deployment is far from ideal, in fact it is critical as we use every hour right up until the last minute to test, retest and test again that everything is working. So add this to other issues that we were dealing with today and the prudent thing to do was to delay the patch and have a second dress rehearsal tomorrow, this time hopefully without incident.
Oh and by the way, the hamsters are still alive if somewhat visibly shaken.
just one question, why do you run your blades with only _one_ CPU? that's not very efficient.

Fuses and breakers are likely to trip before your home computer is going to burn anything. Those blade servers have some pretty massive power supplies. It appears that most of that power got shorted into one blade, which is why it fried. If you read the post, you will see that the power supply was already causing problems, and it was tinkering with it that triggered the fire. The server did not burst into flames all on its own, while the dev's were sleeping.

You know, I hear tech III servers have this subsystem which reduces heat damage. Might want to look into that.

I've only had something similar happen plugging the power switch into the wrong part of the mother board of a really, really old computer once. Had melted plastic dripping on to my hand when i switched it on lol.

Actually theres an awesome idea why not make the program use free CPU power from other computers on the network too process data across the entire universe. (yeah i know it probably doesnt quite work like this but i feel im onto something here.)
