Does all that mean that once this gets deployed I will not simply be able to log in to space but first have to fully recreate my character and all that? Is there no option to simply do that later and have an exclamation character portrait until that time? Makes no sense. I mean, say when that happens there's fleet ops and all that (as usual) do I have to first spend a few hours tinkering until I am happy since I can no longer tweak / edit the character portrait after saving it, or can I postpone it to later (which would make a hell of a lot more sense)?

No, there is a grace period as can be seen on Singularity when you attempt to load a character with an old portrait.

Excellent dev blog! Thanks!
A question? As mentioned in the blog CCP are doing a huge change in game play with this new character editor, as it will be the very first step into Incarna. In that aspect, what are our chances that we can truly dive into this tool by recreating our new character with total freedom this tool offers, by making it available for us to choose new race, bloodline and sex? After trying the tool for a while I am not particularily happy anymore with the Intaki, but have made some truly amazing characters for other races and bloodlines, and as the character will have much more impact on gameplay in the years to come then it have over the 5 years I have been playing so far I feel it would be fitting to allow us to recreate our avatar for the coming future! Pretty please with sugar and cream on top???
And if not () what are the chances for that the intakis can get more hair choises than today? I like a little long hair, without going all the way into the rasta style wich is the only current option..

Information on how to use the in-game portrait capture that you discuss would have been, yknow, useful.
I'm glad you guys think you're "making history" by having a 3-D avatar creator. Whatever they sprinkle in your coffee must be really amazing stuff. Or, dare I say, "AWESOME" stuff!
Personally, I would be much more interested to see you make a quality game by implementing balance tweaks in a timely manner (AFs, black ops, EAFs, field commands... all neglected for years), making PVE content actually challenging and interesting (aside from wormholes), delivering on that industry expansion... ever, shutting down bots with prejudice, devoting more resources to the fight against lag -- seriously looking into multi-threading on the server side, updating or (even better) APIing the UI so it isn't so god awful.
You know what would be really awesome? Being able to engage in a 2000-person fight that was responsive and lag-free. Having more than a handful of ships to pick from that would not be laughed off the field ("hey guys, I brought my eos!"). Not having to click 100 times to batch up 10 identical invention jobs. Having mining be something lucrative and dangerous and requiring of some player skill.
Lastly, how many more dev blogs are we going to have to read about this character creator? We get it. It looks neat, and I'll probably spend a half an hour playing with it. And then what? What, exactly, are we going to be able to do with our new avatars? Where is the gameplay? I mean, I'm as thrilled to support synergies with WoD as the next eve player, but I don't think you guys have really thought this through.

I guess this means we won't be able to have a "character preview" just like the ship preview feature. It had been nice to see whatever char you look up the info for rendered and moving like in the char creator.

Considering how buggy the server vs client rendering is on SiSi, if the server rendering doesn't end up as intended will we be able to give it a few more tries to get it right or will we be stuck after the first attempt?

They cannot answer that right now. CCP is working really hard on polishing up the new character creator. Let's hope that it won't happen. In case it does, if there's enough complaints from us, then CCP will have no choice but to give us another shot at creating a new portrait.

It seems to me there is no technical reason for requiring everyone to recreate their avatars as the content delivery network could easily hold the existing static images (as generated for eve gate) alongside the new static images (as generated by the render farm).
I wouldn't want to imply that there are ulterior motives to this enforcement but

Caldari pic there = Awesome improvment
Amarrian lady = Horrible looking
They seem to have lost that haughty look the Amarrians had, a shame. So many of the chars really don't look all the much different from the others.
One would have thougth 23k years of evolutionary changes, on various and different planets would have created some differences between them all.
That, and the loss of differing head shapes (most notably for the Sebiestors) seems like a little more of everything needs to look the same.
Hopefully the hair and clothing textures and colors undergo a drastic improvment as well. Yeah, they flow and wave around all well and good, but the hair itself, looks flat and plain.

Will the character creator be working for Mac clients? It'd suck to have to redo my character without actually being able to see what's going on...
The last dozen tries I've tried to use it on SiSi I get nothing but graphical errors. (Granted, that was prior to Christmas. It may be fixed by now.)

Edited by: Mirabi Tiane on 06/01/2011 17:55:28 You really have no idea how much better the 2001 Amarr woman looks compared to the 2011 one?
Anyway...
I used to be very enthusiastic about the new character creation system and Incarna, but now I'm just depressed and trepid.
For the rich people who replace their GPUs frequently, it's fine and dandy, but for me...well...all I have is an Nvidia 6600 GT and I cannot afford to replace it in the foreseeable future.
I could learn to live with that, if only the character creation system's behavior was consistent. You see, on rare occasion I can run it with shaders on the "high" setting. It's extremely laggy, but there it is nonetheless. However, most of the time it fails to load, or if I change the setting while already loaded in, surfaces disappear or become black. Today I haven't even been able to load it with the "low" setting. We all know how buggy it is, so I hope that with some amount of work and polish it will behave more predictably. Because my GPU, even as pathetic as it is, has demonstrated a basic capability of rendering the high-quality shaders.
That said, why is there no "medium" setting for the shaders? Surely you can imitate the effects in a less resource-intensive way to the point where unfortunate players will have the privilege of knowing what color their character's skin is and what their hairstyle looks like on them?
(Yes, I've been screwed by progress and I'm butt-hurt.) _____________________________ ¬DesuSig |

The only big problem I have with the new character creator is portrayed by this blog and the amarr female example. The old picture is much better than the new one. The old one looks regal and impressive, while the new one looks realistic but dull and common. Problem being the old one is something I'd love to look like, while the new one I would avoid like the plague. Your team(s) has done a lot of hard work and the CC has progressed far from where it started, but you still have a lot of work to do before the new CC can replace the old one, let alone put it to shame and finally to rest.
Anyway things are starting to look impressive, so just keep working on it.

Definitely looks to me like CCP's programming for their ego instead of for the customer.
While I realize loading portraits in chat windows won't take as long, cause as much lag, and all, forcing them to load will still cause more client-side lag than NOT loading them. Change for the sake of change is not good. Please give us the option of NOT loading portraits. If I want to see the fantasy image sum fat dumpy middle aged Russian child molester has of himself, I'll load up station in Incarna. A microscopic image loaded in local is just enough to be annoying, not enough to be useful.

Nice link, thankfully it's not required to understand a subject in order to link a wiki page, else you'd be rather embarrassed now...
The characters generated do not fall inside the valley, they are realistic enough in the places that count. E.g. the single most important part of the face is the eyes, which are very realistic both in appearance and movement.

Hahaha yea, Caldari one turns from a night shift steel worker into a bad-ass action hero, while the Amarr goes from holier-than-thou regal "don't mess with this" to a dishevelled anorexic Goth high-school washout.
Perhaps the art crew just suck at drawing females, if so then a subscription to a lads mag + archive is in order me'thinks.
But if all else fails (which I am sure it will ) then give us the option to disable portraits entirely. I have lived without sound for years so I am sure I can live without peoples painful attempts at recreating what was lost.
