Does all that mean that once this gets deployed I will not simply be able to log in to space but first have to fully recreate my character and all that? Is there no option to simply do that later and have an exclamation character portrait until that time? Makes no sense. I mean, say when that happens there's fleet ops and all that (as usual) do I have to first spend a few hours tinkering until I am happy since I can no longer tweak / edit the character portrait after saving it, or can I postpone it to later (which would make a hell of a lot more sense)?

No, there is a grace period as can be seen on Singularity when you attempt to load a character with an old portrait.

Excellent dev blog! Thanks!
A question? As mentioned in the blog CCP are doing a huge change in game play with this new character editor, as it will be the very first step into Incarna. In that aspect, what are our chances that we can truly dive into this tool by recreating our new character with total freedom this tool offers, by making it available for us to choose new race, bloodline and sex? After trying the tool for a while I am not particularily happy anymore with the Intaki, but have made some truly amazing characters for other races and bloodlines, and as the character will have much more impact on gameplay in the years to come then it have over the 5 years I have been playing so far I feel it would be fitting to allow us to recreate our avatar for the coming future! Pretty please with sugar and cream on top???
And if not ( ) what are the chances for that the intakis can get more hair choises than today? I like a little long hair, without going all the way into the rasta style wich is the only current option..

Information on how to use the in-game portrait capture that you discuss would have been, yknow, useful.
I'm glad you guys think you're "making history" by having a 3-D avatar creator. Whatever they sprinkle in your coffee must be really amazing stuff. Or, dare I say, "AWESOME" stuff!
Personally, I would be much more interested to see you make a quality game by implementing balance tweaks in a timely manner (AFs, black ops, EAFs, field commands... all neglected for years), making PVE content actually challenging and interesting (aside from wormholes), delivering on that industry expansion... ever, shutting down bots with prejudice, devoting more resources to the fight against lag -- seriously looking into multi-threading on the server side, updating or (even better) APIing the UI so it isn't so god awful.
You know what would be really awesome? Being able to engage in a 2000-person fight that was responsive and lag-free. Having more than a handful of ships to pick from that would not be laughed off the field ("hey guys, I brought my eos!"). Not having to click 100 times to batch up 10 identical invention jobs. Having mining be something lucrative and dangerous and requiring of some player skill.
Lastly, how many more dev blogs are we going to have to read about this character creator? We get it. It looks neat, and I'll probably spend a half an hour playing with it. And then what? What, exactly, are we going to be able to do with our new avatars? Where is the gameplay? I mean, I'm as thrilled to support synergies with WoD as the next eve player, but I don't think you guys have really thought this through.

I guess this means we won't be able to have a "character preview" just like the ship preview feature. It had been nice to see whatever char you look up the info for rendered and moving like in the char creator.

Considering how buggy the server vs client rendering is on SiSi, if the server rendering doesn't end up as intended will we be able to give it a few more tries to get it right or will we be stuck after the first attempt?

They cannot answer that right now. CCP is working really hard on polishing up the new character creator. Let's hope that it won't happen. In case it does, if there's enough complaints from us, then CCP will have no choice but to give us another shot at creating a new portrait.

It seems to me there is no technical reason for requiring everyone to recreate their avatars as the content delivery network could easily hold the existing static images (as generated for eve gate) alongside the new static images (as generated by the render farm).
I wouldn't want to imply that there are ulterior motives to this enforcement but

Caldari pic there = Awesome improvment
Amarrian lady = Horrible looking
They seem to have lost that haughty look the Amarrians had, a shame. So many of the chars really don't look all the much different from the others.
One would have thougth 23k years of evolutionary changes, on various and different planets would have created some differences between them all.
That, and the loss of differing head shapes (most notably for the Sebiestors) seems like a little more of everything needs to look the same.
Hopefully the hair and clothing textures and colors undergo a drastic improvment as well. Yeah, they flow and wave around all well and good, but the hair itself, looks flat and plain.

Will the character creator be working for Mac clients? It'd suck to have to redo my character without actually being able to see what's going on...
The last dozen tries I've tried to use it on SiSi I get nothing but graphical errors. (Granted, that was prior to Christmas. It may be fixed by now.)

Edited by: Mirabi Tiane on 06/01/2011 17:55:28 You really have no idea how much better the 2001 Amarr woman looks compared to the 2011 one?
Anyway...
I used to be very enthusiastic about the new character creation system and Incarna, but now I'm just depressed and trepid.
For the rich people who replace their GPUs frequently, it's fine and dandy, but for me...well...all I have is an Nvidia 6600 GT and I cannot afford to replace it in the foreseeable future.
I could learn to live with that, if only the character creation system's behavior was consistent. You see, on rare occasion I can run it with shaders on the "high" setting. It's extremely laggy, but there it is nonetheless. However, most of the time it fails to load, or if I change the setting while already loaded in, surfaces disappear or become black. Today I haven't even been able to load it with the "low" setting. We all know how buggy it is, so I hope that with some amount of work and polish it will behave more predictably. Because my GPU, even as pathetic as it is, has demonstrated a basic capability of rendering the high-quality shaders.
That said, why is there no "medium" setting for the shaders? Surely you can imitate the effects in a less resource-intensive way to the point where unfortunate players will have the privilege of knowing what color their character's skin is and what their hairstyle looks like on them?
(Yes, I've been screwed by progress and I'm butt-hurt.) _____________________________ ¬DesuSig |

The only big problem I have with the new character creator is portrayed by this blog and the amarr female example. The old picture is much better than the new one. The old one looks regal and impressive, while the new one looks realistic but dull and common. Problem being the old one is something I'd love to look like, while the new one I would avoid like the plague. Your team(s) has done a lot of hard work and the CC has progressed far from where it started, but you still have a lot of work to do before the new CC can replace the old one, let alone put it to shame and finally to rest.
Anyway things are starting to look impressive, so just keep working on it.

Definitely looks to me like CCP's programming for their ego instead of for the customer.
While I realize loading portraits in chat windows won't take as long, cause as much lag, and all, forcing them to load will still cause more client-side lag than NOT loading them. Change for the sake of change is not good. Please give us the option of NOT loading portraits. If I want to see the fantasy image sum fat dumpy middle aged Russian child molester has of himself, I'll load up station in Incarna. A microscopic image loaded in local is just enough to be annoying, not enough to be useful.

Nice link, thankfully it's not required to understand a subject in order to link a wiki page, else you'd be rather embarrassed now...
The characters generated do not fall inside the valley, they are realistic enough in the places that count. E.g. the single most important part of the face is the eyes, which are very realistic both in appearance and movement.

Hahaha yea, Caldari one turns from a night shift steel worker into a bad-ass action hero, while the Amarr goes from holier-than-thou regal "don't mess with this" to a dishevelled anorexic Goth high-school washout.
Perhaps the art crew just suck at drawing females, if so then a subscription to a lads mag + archive is in order me'thinks.
But if all else fails (which I am sure it will ) then give us the option to disable portraits entirely. I have lived without sound for years so I am sure I can live without peoples painful attempts at recreating what was lost.

So... what you want is Incursion, Incarna, and the subsequent 3 expansions right now, and believe that CCP is capable of such a thing? I wish I lived in your world.
Balance Tweaks: Faction Ships, Rockets, T2 Ammo, and Doomsdays PVE: Live Events and Incursions Industry: PI last release with improvements incoming Bots and Lag: Do you not read the devblogs? This is nearly constant work. Multithreading: I'm not sure what you think this will fix. It's a neat idea in theory, but would likely require them to rewrite everything on the servers to prevent races and desynchronization. Especially with the heavy reliance on databases, this would be a nightmare to do. UI: Again, read the devblogs, there are updates coming.
Fleet Fights: 2000 person fleet fight that's responsive and lag-free? Most things in real life that involve 2000 people aren't responsive and lag-free, let alone one where we're spread all over the planet. Ships: Find better/unique fits. This is balancing again, though. It's slow, but coming. Batch Operations: See UI improvements, they're coming (probably). Mining: Seriously? (Maybe Comet mining will fulfil this desire, but yea right...)
DevBlogs: They could stop writing DevBlogs. But then you'd complain about not enough DevBlogs. Avatars: Really? "What are we going to be able to do?" Incarna/Ambulation/Walking-In-Stations was announced in 2006. THAT IS THE GOAL.

You guys better at least add some badass Amarian headgear by the time Incarna hits. That and lots more clothes, hairstyles, tattoos, and accessories that we can purchase.
Also I have to agree that the old Amarrian pic looks better. I don't think it has to do with the levels of realism between the two. One thing I'll miss from the old system is the distinction between the races and bloodlines, they were over the top but right now they feel almost completely gone.
I really think that things like Amarian head pieces/hoods, tattoos for Minmatar, and buddlewrap clothing for Gallente will help bring some of it bad to each race.

Which explains why some of the bloodlines won't look the same way anymore, their existing proportions didn't look right when rendered with photo-realistic textures.
However it cuts both ways if their full body animations later on don't match the quality of the eye movements etc.

Everyone please read: http://www.eveonline.com/ingameboard.asp?a=topic&threadID=1435003
The server is rendering portraits in a way far different than the character creator does. This means what you think your character will look like may be far off.
Please CCP, let the client supply the server with our portrait(Upload) at time of character creation. This will ensure our characters look how we want them to.

This is actually an interesting concept and to case and point I actually hit this theoretical pit when creating a character for Mass Effect 2. In that game it was really creepy and awkward (started over); but in EVE I was actually attempting to do it for my character in 2003. So, it will be cool to see if I can actually get past the uncanny valley or fall into it again.

How long can we avoid updating our portraits using the new charactor creator?
Until you produce a tool even vaguely capable of creating tattoos and suitable clothing and hair options to produce an acceptable approximation of the portrait I have used for the last 8 years I would prefer to simply appear without a portrait at all.
I am guessing we won't get to change our appearance for free when you finish the character creator tool (SoonÖ i.e. maybe 2011) and that changing hair cuts or tattoos will tie into the introduction of micro-transactions in eve when walking in stations is released?

To be honest the new portrait looks appalling compared to the old one.
The old portraits had variety and a sense of difference amongst the various distinct races. The new ones just make everyone look the same (within reason) and ultimately remove all the racial distinctions and interesting clothing, hairstyles and adornments, makeup patterns and tattoos.
If I wanted to look realistic and 100% I would just use a photo of myself. No matter how CCP dress this up the character creator is hugely limited and removes a large amount of variety and individulity from our avatars. Perhaps I'd be more forgiving of it's huge gaps if I had any interest in the idea of walking about in a station rather than blowing up ships in space but I don't.

We need to option to save our "work in progress".
Working one or two hours on a portrait, getting "almost there" and then having to decide if all should be scrapped or accept it even if unfinished because RL call and there is no option to save an incomplete portrait is really a bad choice.

Still, the theory was made based on actual scientific tests measuring real people's reactions. The latest tests I've read about used doll and human faces as extremes, and morphed between them to get a pretty nice graph. The valley has been shown to exists in multiple independent tests, so it's more than just marketing fluff.

While I understand and appreciate where you're coming from, and agree with your concerns in large part, this thread isn't the place to vent. CCP Lopi and the other people working hard on the new character creator are not in a position to affect these things, and it's rude to rage in their thread for something they have no control over.
Side question for Lopi: I messed with the character creator last week (when SiSi was being nice to the Mac) but didn't get things the way I wanted. However, my new avatar got stored. Is there any way to tweak things so I can try creating it again? Also, some of the positioning controls (shifting the entire portrait) were not obvious -- are more cues planned for that stage?
The suggestion for saving a work-in-progress is a good one, if time permits.

Studies have shown that as long as the eyes are 'real', you can have pretty damn weird bodies/faces while still staying outside of the valley. So no, they wouldn't have needed to homogenize the looks for the sake of the linked link.

The very focus of the new character creator, as it stands, removes a lot of the feel and look of the old portraits. Hell, I can't even tell the females apart anymore - the amarr girls look like the gallente girls look like the caldari girls look like the minmatar girls (well, with a tan ).

Edited by: Lili Lu on 07/01/2011 00:43:35 While the new character appearance generator can create more realism in appearance it unfortunately has lost some of the racial differences that exist in the game protraits now. I'm sorta sad at what has been done to eve character creation.
First you made the choices meaningless in that stats or skills were no different tween races and bloodlines and schools. I'm happy that everyone is no longer rolling achura to get a 3 charisma but come on currently there are no meaningful choices to be made. Now you are doing the same to character appearance with this Incursion portrait generator. Fewer hair choices, fewer clothing choices, heck even the facial features are not as varied. And what choices there are in these features are the same for every race it seems. Where is the uniquely racial clothing and doos? Could you not just wait to release this with Incarna after you've been able to bring some more variety to this whole process? |

While you're at it, how about making the following changes:
a) make a setting such that portraits never load on the local member list (even when you right click->show info);
b) make the player/corp show info screens *never* default to the standings tab, as this can cause clients to lag for 1-15 seconds while all the standings crap is loaded when the client arbitrarily decides to open up the Show Info page with the standings tab open. This is not fun in lowsec/0.0 where you're often Show Info'ing neutrals.
You know, some gameplay-relevant enhancements while you're at it. Figured it can't hurt to ask.

This is the third devblog in a month that says "hey guys, there's a new character creator! it's shiny and p.s. you have no choice but to use it for all your alts!" I'm underwhelmed and displeased at what I see happening, so I'm saying something about it.
I'm truly sorry that CCP Lopi has stupid bosses (or stupid bosses-of-bosses) -- that happens to most of us at some point in our careers. I trust s/he has a strong enough sense of self to not feel badly when people are displeased at decisions over which s/he has no control.
I also, perhaps ludicrously, hope that people inside CCP who do make decisions read this sort of thing. It is my distinct sense that such decision-makers have not gotten the message and need to be reminded. If your CSM tenure has given you a different impression, it would be news about which I would be most interested to hear.

Bots and Lag: Do you not read the devblogs? This is nearly constant work.
I read them -- I even believe the ones about lag. It's not clear to me that you can single and double your way to fixing it. Small, consistent gains are great, but as someone who was super psyched to be in my first 1000+ fight until I realized how terrible the lag was, I don't have faith that nipping and tucking and adding up small improvements is going to be enough.
Originally by: "Callic Veratar"
Multithreading: I'm not sure what you think this will fix. It's a neat idea in theory, but . . . this would be a nightmare to do.
I think it will fix lag. I'm aware that more technical people than I can argue that it only *might* do so (and I realize it wouldn't be easy -- I just think it's a necessary component of the single-shard MMO eve promises to be but has not yet become). However, I think we can both agree that for reasons having entirely to do with CCP's development priorities, the option is not on the table, and would not be even if it were established conclusively that it would definitely fix the lag.
Consequently, we hear a lot about how well we don't know if it would work and boy it would sure be hard.
Originally by: "Callic Veratar"
UI: Again, read the devblogs, there are updates coming.
I think you're just satisfied with much smaller changes than I am. So now you can make menu choices optional on the main HUD and move some stuff around? Okay. How many dev-hours did that take? How about the font? the overloading interface? right click menus? I think the UI is the single biggest turn-off to new players.

I'm not complaining because my ping time to iceland is 85 ms. Have you been in a large sov fight? It is not fun, and not by 50 or 500 or even 5000 ms. It should be fun. Alternatively, CCP should stop promoting them and figure out some game mechanic to split up fights into multiple systems or somesuch. Don't show me a trailer with thousands of big ships from around the globe fighting it out, update the news site with info about the latest such goings on, and then act like I'm some ranting nutjob for expecting that to be fun.

Yep, there are a whole bunch of issues related to this.
The first, simple, one is that it should be technically very easy to serve up existing portraits until they are replaced.
The second is that a complicated character designer makes a game newbie-unfriendly. "OK, let's try out this spaceship game" / "Before you can play, you must spend an hour or two designing your character's entire physique, and if you later decide it's not what you wanted you'll need to pay real money for the privilege of changing it". I'm certainly not against the idea of cool character portrait generators, but unless that's what the game is about it seems silly to put such a road-block in the way of new players.
Or of existing players who just want to fly spaceships.
Suggestion:
(1) Quick portrait system. Your first choice is to pick a stock character from about 3-5 options per race. {Option: existing characters can use their existing portrait, at least until it needs to be more than a portrait / Incarna / When the King Returns}
(2) At any later stage, you can play with the portrait generator. You can do this as often as you like, whenever you like, and save as many "complete" or incomplete copies to your local HD.
(3) After creating a portrait, you can apply it to an existing character, at which point it is uploaded to the server and becomes your "official" portrait. You can do this twice for free per character; thereafter it costs (like remaps, except they don't regenerate and you can buy more)*.
* Alternative: once per character, plus once per account per 12 months.
As far as I can tell, this would deal with all the portrait-related issues. |

That would be an incorrect guess. You are asked if you want to open the character creator, select no and you go straight into the game.
Also if you have 10+ alts, you can just start the character creator, hit randomize a few times (top left hand side), hit save and be done with it.

Ive tried the new character generation on Sisi and I have to say it sucks.
There are no facial tatooes anymore, which is the main body blow.
The clothing options are basically, leather jacket or pajama's
The sunglasses are basically all the same, but with different tints.
Generally the options on skin tones, visually all look so similar there may as well be only 3 options
Background options are only about 1/3 what they are now
Visually, it all looks stunning, but the main differences between characters you see now will be just their pose... and wether they prefer a leather jacket or pajamaas lol

They keep avoiding the question, I hope CSM asked it for the recent meeting, because it makes a hell of a difference whether you can bypass it to do it later, or whether you get forced to deal with it and if something is not as you wanted (because you had a fleet op or something else to attend, or fun to be had) you'll end up having to shell out a plex or two in an upcoming microtransactions iteration several expansions later.

The UI isn't broken. Unintuitive? Annoying? More time-consuming than it needs to be? Yes. But everything works, it doesn't blow up randomly... it is not broken.
There will always be things in-game which may seem to be more urgent than things like new character portraits. Always. Meaning, once the current batch get fixed there will be a new batch which crop up. If CCP ONLY spent time trying to put out those fires, the game would never grow and become deeper.
Character creation is one of those things which seems frivilous, but taken in aggregate with other similar features it significantly increases the draw of the game (more people join, is more immersive for more people, etc etc etc). You'll be seeing the positive effects of higher-quality character creation LONG after you get bored of rockets not sucking.

I would like some "free retries" but this at least should be implemented. Witha possibility to start from a current portrait and tweak it or restarting from scratch.
IMHO, make new portraits "unconfirmed" until rendered on server side; first login after portrait is rendered it pops up full-screen with a "DO YOU WANT TO KEEP THIS PORTRAIT?" dialog, if yes it's permanent if no you keep using the OLD portrait and have to redo it.

That would be an incorrect guess. You are asked if you want to open the character creator, select no and you go straight into the game.

Mashie Saldana is correct, you don't have to enter the character creator on first login. People may want to log in quickly to update their skill queue or their PI programs or whatever, and they should be able to take the time to properly play with the character creator when they have the time.

Good clarification, despite the fact this was obvious from the SiSi builds...
What will be the "grace period" for not-renewing your character portrait? I guess CCP has some deadline in mind, so after the deadline it would be mandatory to recreate the portrait, right?

It's terrible. Just because it successfully compiles, doesn't bluescreen or delete boot.ini does not mean that it's not broken.
For example, ask CCP how many people still use PI? Of those, how many are not bots? According to recent CSM reports, CCP is so embarrassed by how low this number is that they told it to the CSM under NDA and refused to release it.
I agree there needs to be a balance between new content and improving old content. However, you should realize that PI was the 'new content' of the last expansion. They're releasing content that is "unintuitive, annoying, and needlessly timeconsuming" in the eyes of its defenders and then leaving it in that state for 6-8 months. Best of all, the excuse for not fixing it is that there's new content that needs to be released! And when that new content is similarly broken, when will it be fixed? Because there's yet more new content coming, to stack on top of everything else...
Also, I agree that portraits>rockets. However, rocket utility/effort to fix rockets >>>> portrait utility/effort to create portrait generator. There's no reason why balance changes need to be so hard or time consuming. UPDATE weapontable SET explosion_velocity = ###. This takes 2 yrs?

Solid idea -- particularly because the "snap portrait" button is producing results that don't look at all like what you see in front of you on your screen.

(1) Quick portrait system. Your first choice is to pick a stock character from about 3-5 options per race. {Option: existing characters can use their existing portrait, at least until it needs to be more than a portrait / Incarna / When the King Returns}
You can do this twice for free per character; thereafter it costs (like remaps, except they don't regenerate and you can buy more).
Even better idea here (emphasis supplied). I would retract 80% of my portrait-related rage were this implemented. Let me keep my portraits unless I think the new system is so cool that I want to update them. And, if 85% of players don't want to, how much revenue could CCP expect to generate from forcing players to use it and then having them have to pay to redo it a month or three later?
The remaining 20% of rage would be because, as everyone else points out: No tatoos, no gas masks, no visors, no crazy hair colors for gallente, no jewelry... Clothing is, in the words of another poster, either leather fetish or pyjamas Skin tones and features all look pretty much the same No save progress, no reset facial features to default in portrait mode (if you mess up the smile or brow raise or w/e it's impossible to revert

Maybe we're working under different definitions of broken. The one I use is [url=http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/broken]"not functioning properly; out of working order."[/url] The current PI UI does function properly, it is simply poorly designed. Bad != broken.
Quote: I agree there needs to be a balance between new content and improving old content. However, you should realize that PI was the 'new content' of the last expansion. That line of reasoning is predicated on the assumption that there must be a choice between EITHER adding new content OR making balance changes and improvements to previous content. That is quite obviously false; the coming patch includes new content (portraits), improvements to old content (new PI UI), and balance changes (rocket fix). There are multiple teams working on many different portions of the game; raging against team A for getting content finished because team B hasn't finished with the thing you want more already is not helpful, and makes you look like a troll and/or complete tool.
In fact, as I understand it the entire problem with PI cropped up BECAUSE there were multiple teams working on different parts of things. Each team worked really hard on each discrete part of PI (probably something like one team making the planets, another designing the production chain, another creating and materials-balancing all the different BPOs, etc). Once everybody finished they kinda took everything, threw it in a bowl, mixed it up real good, then gave it to a team and said "HERE! Now just polish it off by making a UI to pull it all together. We're going live in a week." The problem was a rushed final release... which ties in well with your next comment:

Quick fixes are bad, mmkay? They are prone to having unintended side effects, which frequently create larger problems than the one they were intended to fix. The "right" way to do it is to:
1. Identify problem/imbalance. Usually done by the community as a whole.
2. Confirm problem/imbalance is real, and not just perceived. By nature the game has "flavor-of-the-month" ships/fits, usually because they are particularly effective at something. This creates a lot of "ZOMGZ, [current FOTM] is hugely OP! NERF NAO!" static. If it's not actually imbalanced, the masses will switch over to FOTM ship since it's the FOTM... then someone will come up with something particularly good at killing the FOTM, creating a lot of "ZOMGZ, [FOTM counter] is hugely OP! NERF NAO!" static.
That's perceived imbalance. There's lots of it. Easiest way to find real imbalance is to leave it alone for a while; if it works itself out, don't do anything. If it stays/gets worse for a while (several months), address it.
3. Figure out what exactly is wrong. Not always so easy as it sounds. "Rockets suck" isn't the answer here, the answer is "rockets do not do enough damage" or "rockets cannot hit small/fast targets well enough" or "rockets do not have enough range"... OR ANY COMBINATION OF THE POSSIBILITIES!
4. Find something reasonably close to the best way to fix problem. It must both fix the problem AND not interact with anything else in the game to create additional, possibly larger, problems. EVE is a very complex system with lots of things which stack together in ways even the people who created it don't expect. That's a LOT of things to look at for any solution, and there are likely multiple possibilities for solutions on the table. That's a whole lot to check.
5. Implement solution. Can be non-trivial in ways you might not expect because of how something is made; think of a ship in a bottle. Your solution? "Oh, that's easy, the ship just needs to be outside the bottle. Except we can't break the bottle... and we need to use the same pieces for the ship. Crap".
6. Repeat steps 1-5 for the 2,000 other things people ***** and moan about.
Could CCP do better? Certainly, there's always room for improvement. Should they work harder on it? Probably.
Is it as easy as you imply? DEFINITELY not.

So, after four straight hours of playing with the Character Creator for this alt...here's what I ended up thinking: Does it make sense that Vherokior women living in the distant future would be copying the hair and makeup styles of 21st century Japanese emo girls?
Seriously. Does this make sense to anyone? Anyone at all? Even anyone who works for CCP? Show us the support for this in lore. Make a single logical argument in support of it. Anyone?
If not, why is it happening? Could it be greed-fed racial tokenism, aimed at the Asian market? They need to put it back on the drawing board, and release it maybe a year from now, as part of what it is--Incarna. Maybe a year will be long enough for common sense to prevail over greed.
Maybe.

What part of "knock it off" do you not understand?
This is, at best, your fifth "dev blog" about the same feature, which is 2 months overdue and was not looking very promising (read: it was bad) when it was available on SiSi.
Quote: We here at CCP believe that we are making history - a milestone in how character creation should look and feel in computer games with the capabilities to finely sculpt the appearance of your character with such incredible detail
Then you had better have logarithmically expanded the set of features, because the version we had access to before, even at its best moment was pretty 'blah' in terms of modern 3D character creators.
Quote: we decided to render all character portraits server side and let the EVE client fetch the portraits from our web-based Image Server
You mean like it does now?
You know everyone is going to be ****ed about not being able to make anything resembling their existing portrait so you're pumping this new system like it's the answer to all of our problems as if we'll get excited about having a new 32x32 in-game icon in the chat window.
KNOCK IT OFF.
We all know it's coming and we all understand why. Stop posting so-called dev-blogs about the same bloody thing over and over over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over again in some ridiculous attempt to make us feel better about it.
If you had time to type that SAME BLOG all over again then you should have spent it working on the patch instead.
Good day.

Well this character creator is a vast improvement. Creating the new character portrait is going to be a ton of fun. However, I assume that once it's done, it can't be redone. That would be a shame. It would be great to be able to edit your portrait from time to time as you wish, much as you can with your Xbox360 avatar. Just another way to involve the player in the game.

Now, by 'finely' and 'incredible detail' you mean a grand total of two alternate positions, right? Features which can be sculpted generally have a 'normal' center position, and two extreme positions in opposite directions--AND NOTHING ELSE. If you try and get something inbetween, it just snaps to one or the other. I take it that in Icelandic, 'finely' and 'grossly' are synonyms.
If honesty counted, the blog would say: "We dispensed with sliders because they would have revealed how limited the Carbon engine's character creation is, and came up with 'sculpting' as a smoke and mirrors attempt to con our players into believing this is very flexible."
Bet you honestly thought nobody would notice.

I don't know where you got this information, but it is not correct. The October Summit meetings mention what happened in the initial PI release:

Will you please give explicit instructions in how to save our currenct character portrait files (where are they saved?) and allow us to use the current ones until which time either third part or first party servers allow us to experiment for weeks and tweek what we hav saved incrementally.. then export it to eve?
Some characters will be easy but I had a really hard time getting this one anything close to acceptable.

Fire up your Tranquility client and log into the game. Find your character in a chat window and right click on him/her then click on Capture Portrait. You can do this for any character, i.e. you don't have to be logged in as the character whose portrait you're capturing.
Next, find your EVE folder. For me on a Windows machine, it's inside My Documents. Go into the "EVE" folder, then "capture", then "Portraits" and you should find the files. The name of the file is your characterid.

I've mentioned this in another thread but I'll mention it here too since it's probably more relevant here.
First, being able to save a character during creation to come back to it and work more later... I don't think this would be a nice feature to have, I think it's essential to make this a practical tool, especially since we've had no indication of how our character could be changed in the future or how much it might cost.
I'd really like some sort of answer from CCP as to how changes could be made in the future. I'm not keen to spend real money to make a change in the future, particularly if the character creator is released next week with the range of assets we have on SiSi right now. I would very much hope that if the tool is released with very limited art assets, then more assets are added in a future expansion, we shouldn't be penalised for having been in the game in January and forced to use the limited version. Revising our character after new art assets are added should be free.
Outwith that, I think our characters should be able to be changed when we want. I don't mind paying some ISK for this (although I probably won't pay real money for it) but the cost should compare to the real world. For example, changing my facial hair costs me nothing (I have shaving trained to 5, although I don't always use it). Changing my hair style costs me a little bit (but nowhere near the cost of a PLEX). Having plastic surgery to change my facial features is possible but much more difficult and costly.
It seems a bit of a waste for CCP to have done so much work creating this tool (and it IS a pretty impressive tool, although the art assets are limited right now) to force people to spend some time on it once this month then probably never see again because it might involve micropayments. Let us revisit the creator again and again at a reasonable ISK cost so we can appreciate all this hard work rather than being constantly stressed about having to get everything perfect first time.

What's our time limit to make the new avatars? A week, a month, 48hrs, what?
Why aren't you giving us the ability to start making an avatar then come back to it, save-restore-continue? If you are why isn't it mentioned in the blog just over a week out from alleged release?

Well, you didn't have to. As a result, very, very few people did, and this made a bunch of higher-ups at CCP look like morons for having invested resources in things that nobody wants to do (hereinafter "terrible gameplay").
The obvious solution to this problem is to force you to use these new features, which completely eliminates the risk that any new content will feature terrible gameplay. The next time CCP has a management meeting where they discuss what an awesome job they've been doing creating new content, they won't have to worry about whether or not lolplayers like and enjoy the content enough to voluntarily use it. Instead, after a couple weeks they will find that 100% of active characters have used their new feature. They will pat themselves on the back for a job well done, and later that night they will all feast on rancid shark fins.

I like the creator itself, but it makes every character look bland. The lack of headgear, tattoos and more unique clothing and hair styles is very, very disappointing.
A very good example is the Amarr female portraits in the blog itself.

Do you have TV where you live? In my area they switch from analog to digital and if you want to keep watching TV you have to switch too.
Do you work in a larger company where they use a central managed mail/calendar application? In my company they do and they recently switched from one to another.
Regarding Eve.. I don't use anything related to sovereignty mechanics or factional warfare. From my POV a complete waste of developer time.
And another angle to look at stuff.. CCP changed probing from the old (place probes at bookmarks and keep scanning until you hit the jackpot) to the new system. Could I opt out of the change? Could anyone?
TL;DR keep whining you little baby.

Yes there will be a point in time after which it will be obligatory to create a new character. It is not set in stone yet when that will be, but probably after a month or so.

As Bella Bee already confirmed there will be a grace period of around one month. The end-date will be announced when we know it and with enough notice for players to react. During the grace period players will be able to log into the game without having to go through the new character creator. As Bella Bee also pointed out, for those of you with alts whose appearance doesn't matter to you, there is the randomize option to allow you to speed through the process.
On the topic of more options, we really wanted to have tattoos out in this release but for various reasons we had to postpone them. Work is now underway to get tattoos as well as scars, piercings and more glasses in the game. In the next release we plan to introduce the option to re-customize your character from within the game to take advantage of all the new options. Expect to see more and more options coming in future releases. We have a lot of things we would love to see and we will be using feedback from this and other threads to help us make decisions on what we put in and when.

Thats fine, but as you say we can only postphone the character creation for one month. Does that mean if the tattoos get in after that grace period and after you have made your character you will have to remake your portrait followed by paying for it to replace the "old" one?

I don't think there's been any comments from CCP to allow us to remake our characters by paying for re-customization. It would be a bit sad if you can't tweak you character after you have created him/her. I know at least for me it's quite hard to get a character that I'm totally satisfied with only one sitting. You go blind to the changes after a while and what first started as mockery to apes and progressed to a identifiable human being, that on a quick inspection seems to have all faculties in place I know from experience that as the next day comes and I see the character fresh I immediately notice the "faults".
So for me it would be essential to allow remakes, either for against ingame ISK or after a certain time period (similar to neural remapping). Not being able to save the progress and finalize later will undoubtedly create some challenges for me.
But for sure, CCP has to allow us to totally remake our characters for free (ingame or otherwise) as they roll the improvements. A character designed without seeing the additional choices can't be created fully beforehand. I'm sure that CCP will allow us to customize freely within a bloodline. Although I'd appreciate to be able to change bloodline within a race. For example Intaki male to Gallente male as I totally detest the huge Intaki nose. |

Yeh what this guy said pretty much. I'm all for shiny graphics and the new portraits look fantastic. However they seem to have lost their racial 'flavour'
Nowadays you can load up a char and immediately identify race and bloodline at a glance. These new char's look very similar to one another, For instance that Amarrian female looks very much like a Deteis female I saw earlier.
This is by no means a gamebreaker, but considering the rich backstory of EVE, I thought a little more attention to detail would have been paid to each races characteristics.
ehhh, I doubt you can do much about it now this close to patch. My suggestion to get some flavour back is make the caldari more square headed, gallente skinnier, amarr wide and flatter faces (don't forget the hooked witches nose ;) ), and ofc minmatar just need to have sunglasses.
Originally by: Rocius Caldari pic there = Awesome improvment
Amarrian lady = Horrible looking
They seem to have lost that haughty look the Amarrians had, a shame. So many of the chars really don't look all the much different from the others.
One would have thougth 23k years of evolutionary changes, on various and different planets would have created some differences between them all.
That, and the loss of differing head shapes (most notably for the Sebiestors) seems like a little more of everything needs to look the same.
Hopefully the hair and clothing textures and colors undergo a drastic improvment as well. Yeah, they flow and wave around all well and good, but the hair itself, looks flat and plain.

That's because the underlying model essentially stays the same. You can warp it somewhat but the differentiation comes from the backgrounds, accessories, lighting, pose, makeup etc, not as much as the character face changing. I tried the old creator just yesterday to check out the lighting effects that are still better on the old creator compared to the new one.
On a side note, the new Gallente Intake "hi-res" update to the build 219412 made the nose a lot smaller. Hip hip hurray! |

Just finished reading the whole thread. Definitely not happy about the possibility of my char looking nothing like the one I create. That will result in much rage.
Also agree that 1 portrait adjustment per year would be a very solid idea. CCP should not be relying on this being a massive source of income via microtransaction. As someone who already forked out $10 for a face transplant I can emphatically say I will *NOT* be paying for cosmetic changes ever again.
Why? Because CCP will most likely revamp this again at some stage erasing all my hard work. If I wanna **** my money up a wall, I'll buy a beer ;)
Couple of further notes; Is it just me or does the new amarr chick in the devblog look like she has dead eyes, like she's had her soul shat upon for years and years? Seriously, like locking stares with a 45 year old hooker :/
That redhead chick on the other page? WOWEE, you're doing it wrong CCP :D :D
----------------
Yeh I think we all realise why you can tell races apart with the old char creator dude ;)
I think they should use a similar 'base' model for the new CC, rather than just building all the char's off the same model and then switching skintones/clothes around.
If you guys at CCP have already done this, my only advice is make it less damn subtle!

Originally by: Berikath In fact, as I understand it the entire problem with PI cropped up BECAUSE there were multiple teams working on different parts of things. We're going live in a week."
I don't know where you got this information, but it is not correct. The October Summit meetings mention what happened in the initial PI release:
"The PI team was newly formed when it was assigned the task of producing the headline feature for Tyrannis, and as a consequence of their inexperience as a team (as opposed to as individuals), they underestimated the difficulty of the task, and thus the feature ended up having only MUST user stories. Fair enough. Honestly, it was one of those "I think I remember..." things, so apparently I understood incorrectly.
TBQH, I don't see them as terribly different scenarios- both biting off more than the team can chew (in a given time) and allocating insufficient development time to a certain phase of the process are errors in organization which happen despite the best of intentions (and the overall point stays the same- multiple teams, workin on different things at the same time).

If you have your client on low quality graphics setting, then unfortunately the outcome of the server rendering can potentially be somewhat different. This is because with the low quality settings you don't see the shadows and the full textures that play quite an important role in the final outcome. The only way to really avoid this completely is to stop supporting the lower quality graphics cards but we didn't want to do that just yet.

What about some of the rendering differences that were flat out wrong as discussed in the test server thread? Things like hair NOT rendering server-side, the wrong colors of hair, clothes, makeup, opacity being maxed or min on things like makeup, eyelashes, eyebrows, facial hair. Some of the bugs from the test server thread are painfully obviously server-side rendering PROBLEMS. And most graphics in the gaming world tend to be scalable to some extent, having things flat out wrong between renderings is Not Good.

Apologies, I don't think I communicated the issue properly. The problem is not the inability of my video card to render the pictures properly but rather that sometimes the server renderings creates a result that is different from the original picture.
One issue seems to be that a selection of a long hair type in the client seems to be rendered sometimes as a very short hair by the server. Page 2 of the Test-Server thread as a few examples of these: Linkage
Please take a look at the the client rendering here, pictures were created with a Geforce FX480 and all graphic settings at high.
Client Server
The hair colour choice is most obvious difference. But the skin-tone is also slightly different and the eyebrows have the default colour instead of the one that matches the hair.

It's limited and not good overall. You cannot recreate what you already have, so I honestly am disappointed and think it sucks. The original character creator allowed for more variety. I hope you guys get the features in that allows someone to keep what they have already and improve it with high quality, and more detail.
I give CCP a 4 out of 10, they have taken advantage of new tech and hardware but failed to keep what the customers already have. Character portraits are how we have viewed these characters for years, they have a certain personality associated with those images, when you cannot recreate it you have failed to understand your own game.
Imagine that you have friends that you lived with for 8 years, you lived in the same house, and with a click of a button your friends would all change into strangers, they are same people but all look vastly different from what you were just looking at.
Point is get your guys to look at the original code and data again, or if you know already attempt to recapture what we already have if you cannot duplicate what you have then you have failed. Now not everyone is going to want to duplicate what they have but it should be possible.

I don't think the issue is anything more than content. The editor has the potential to create characters unmatched in any other game, let alone MMO. It's up to use and our imagination to recreate our characters as we see fit. Granted, we need more content. Honestly, this seems to be what people are getting hung up on. The actual character models of the original creator are far more limited, and honestly, I don't see how someone can say otherwise that the models themselves actually look that diverse.
What was diverse was the lighting, the costumes, the backgrounds, the decorations, the tattoos. These are the things that the new creator is missing, and will hopefully get over time. Why be so dramatic? This is an amazing step for EVE, and we should all embrace it. Over the next six months I believe we'll see a huge difference, and people will look back and say it was for the better.
I've been messing around in the creator for a week now and have had much success creating a variety of different looking characters, and damn do they look amazing in such high quality. So CCP if you read this, just don't forget what made the original creator unique, and give us all that amazing content so we can create some UNIQUE and fascinating characters!

Yeah, because whenever I pick up a new game I absolutely look forward to spending a week making a character not look bland.

The hair colour choice is most obvious difference. But the skin-tone is also slightly different and the eyebrows have the default colour instead of the one that matches the hair.
Thanks for the clarifications, I believe those issues should be resolved by now. If you're still experiencing issues like this then we would very much appreciate that you report them and include images of client and server rendering.

Who said I was working on the same character? As I said what is bland is the lack of extra content and I believe CCP knows this and is working on adding things over time.

It's the best way to push people to want to pay microtransactions. Wait 2-3 months past the expansion release and you'll see "magically" dozens of cool looking stuff being available... for a price.

I completely agree, I had real difficulty in getting Lady Mahra here to look regal on the new char generator but I just ended up with an attractive yet very ordinary woman.
While I don't have any particular symphathy for Amarrs in general, their ladies looked exactly like everyone imagines an Amarr lady would look.
Now they look like the old woman that comes clean my office, but much older.
Also, Minmatar without proper tattoos are going to look wrong when tattoos will be introduced.
I am quite deluded we cannot press a button to import our current character (and then "refine" it). I am just VERY attached to this character, I understand back in time I did some mistakes on her but like IRL, defects and scars are part of our persona's identity.
What we have outside is easily a mirror of the inside. What I can see right now is a bland and boring outside, it does not match with the inside, the character is "out of sync". - Auditing & consulting

So I went through and captured all the portraits of people I know. I didn't know it doesn't save the portrait with the characters name. I thought that would be an obvious feature.
So if your wanting to save a load of portraits be sure to name the files as you go...

Originally by: CCP Caedmon As Bella Bee already confirmed there will be a grace period of around one month.
This option to 're-customize' during later releases... can you please clarify if this means re-create the character as per the initial re-design; or, once the character's new face is set, just upgrade the adornments like scars and tattoos as the content is ready to implement?
Also, after the grace period is over, do we have to re-do all of the characters on an account during that one log-in, or is it only when you actively log into a particular character (ie. if you don't log into the other toons for several months, that is when you are compelled to do their face-lifts?
Final point (from an in-universe canon perspective): as long as you have paid enough for a quality clone from a top-of-the-line dealer, in theory you should be able to re-design your face each time you are podded, ie. like the Broker.

The only measure of success or failure for CCP management is revenue. Everything else is incidental.
Don't be surprised or annoyed by the fact that CCP's motivations may not be the same as player motivations. These guys are geeky professional computer nerds and they want to produce ground breaking entertainment technology. Fixing things that are broken sucks in comparison and doesn't look as good on a cv (or marketing copy). Do you want to get the award for "Most Improved" at work?
It's all about how much they can get away with in terms of churn -- bring in more subscriptions and avoid accelerating cancellations.
Yes, the new characters are skinny and bland. Apparently nobody is fat or Latino in the Eve universe -- or has any skin discoloration, pores, acne, pockmarks, freckles, etc. I'm actually surprised how Nordic they can make an Asian look -- but I guess that fits with a painted white face. Unless this is a complete fail (like PI), someone will get around to improving this eventually. Never fear.
As always, you can only really protest with your cash. Unless we are willing to cancel, we are all just blowing smoke.

My design skills are far below my demands, so I will need the help of friends to get my character right (not to mention that it will take me ages).
My problem now ist: How do I communicate about a specific aspect?
It would be nice if one could copy and paste all parameters or at least read them somewhere so one could discuss character aspects via chat or email.
I think I could live with something like entering "NA1.234NB2.23NC..." in a textfield to get exactly the same nose my pal sculpted in the 30 seconds of artistic wizardry he spared for me.
This also would give me a way to play around in singularity and then transfer the result to tranquility.
My 2 cents.

Why has there been no explanation about why you can't give us an ability to save partial work?
Clearly you're reading the thread and seen many people ask About it. Ignoring a valid question just rubs me sort of wrong
Also. You really haven't addressed why people can't just have a jpeg (or whatever) for 6 month or a year unt the beta period is long behind and all the features you want to add have are added
Maybe the most simple question is. "what's the rush?" it's easy for peoples imaginations to run rampant the wrong way when something really seems rushed

The ability to save or export the partial or complete work of character design, as some value or file that can then be imported later, would indeed spare many the duplicated effort, time, & luck necessary to recreate a portrait once one has been begun or nearly finished. Such a feature would be a thankful blessing, allowing portrait drafts to be done on alts or Sisi before making a final permanent commit.
However, aside from the lack of any such feature, or the current limited options for clothing, accessories, and backgrounds, the most noticeable lack in the new creation system relative to the current one we are being forced to abandon, is the lighting.
The current portrait lighting system on TQ is pretty outstanding. The transitions between lighting options can be quite striking, simultaneously varying the angle, color, & intensity of lighting not only on the character but on the background as well, shifting the overall presence & mood of the portrait in a way that is as yet mostly absent in the new system. There are only a handful of lighting angles, an intensity slider, very little color variation, and no apparent effect of the lighting on backgrounds.
If the current build on Sisi is what is about to be released on Tuesday, without anything at all close to the choices in lighting that have historically been available, then sadly a large portion of Awesome is being left behind in the transition. |

As a Vherokior female, I can attest to the concerns I have about the planned raid on my wardrobe by forces heretofore unnamed. I have already obtained some second hand clothing from a Gallente homeless people's charity, and I will simply have to wait until the Republic's tailors have fresh supplies. I am also extremely upset that the clone bay operators failed to correctly transcribe my Voluval & other tattoos, which are the only link I had to my parents and culture, may they rest in peace. -- [Aussie players: join ANZAC channel] |

On a 6 hour drive I just made I tried to ask myslf "how could I be more positive about this new portrait thing".
I do like to be positive and I did get on the test server to give it whirl before becoming worried.
Even with the old system I messed up a dozen characters that I had to biomass because of some lame look they had that I would need to stare at the whold time I played the game on them. I never had that probelem with other games..... not sure why i had probelms so frequently with the eve character portraits making the types of personalties that I like to play (usually, slightly vain, intelligent, self cofident, while being a bit of a whimsical eccentric)
What did I come up with that would make me a positive optimistic person trying to get with th new system?
If you gave us a firm commitment in a blog that we would all be able to redo our potraits once in the month of June, well, then I could cheerfully jump in here , do my best.. give some feedback about what I'd hope improved between now and June.. practice more on the test server and be readdy then to give it a final shot on the system you'd have then with all your planned bells and whisltes in place.
If I knew I'd get to do it all again in June, I could dwell on the positives of what is there in this first iteration and eagerly anticipate the extra we'd get down the road.

At any point during the character creation, right up until the point when you finalise your choices and exit the character creator, you can go all the way back to the start of the process and have another go. You can hit ctrl + F9 and take screenshots which you can view out of game, spin your character around and look at them from any angle. If you really, honestly need a month to get your character looking right then I think its safe to say you have major issues, and Im not talking about artistic ones.
You have a whole month, maybe a bit more before you have to have your new avatar done and dusted, and hopefully not much after that we will be able to go back in and add things like tattoos, those silly crash helmet visors and sunglasses to our hearts content. We won't get charged for that as CCP have already stated those things were intended to be in place for the initial release but they ran out of time, so there is no need to whine and moan.

I don't know,, with the old editor, every time i'd adjust a tattoo, or clothing i'd make coresponding adjustments to hair color or lighint or view angle. I'm certainly not saying I got them pefect even with the old system as you really couldn't save a work in progress, and come back to it a day or two later with adjustments.
Really what i did was move from getting characters from unacceptable to acceptable ... not from good to great.
Not having the final lighting , clothing or tattoos makes selection of facial shape impossible for the choices of one drive the choices of the other.

I vote for clearer instructions on which portrait will be used so that others who are playing with the creator trying to get a good look do not come out looking like me. Alas, CCP you have tricked me again into somehow giving you money for a game I do not want to pay for. I did not imagine myself spending $10 this month to actually want to log into eve, I didn't send buddy invites and buy plex to pay YOU. I did those things because I do not like paying a monthly fee for a video game, as brilliant as eve is, I am cheaper than it is brilliant.
So. . . How to explain to my wife, that I have to spend $10 so a virtual portrait of my alter ego can cure his down syndrome is the next task of the day, strange I didn't see that mentioned in the patch notes.

I like the character creator but agree that there needs to be a clear warning confirmation about which of your portraits is going to be used and a wider choice of hair styles and threads. There also needs to be an undo button if you don't like it or CCP need to give us all a second chance to un-gimp the mess we make first time ...

Character creation crashes my client. And I don't care that it does. Which would be a problem if I wasn't planning to keep my old profile picture. I have become attached to that profile pic. It has come to represent an ever immersive fantasy of me as a space pilot in a game called eve. Forcing me to change that image of who I have come to think of as myself (in game), is extremely disturbing. I don't even like playing alts as it destroys the illusion that I have a unique identity in this game. I don't think this was thought out and I am sure that there are other players that find this move invasive. I don't remember randomly messing with players accounts in the EULA as the character creation does not effect game play.

What kind of "plan" do you have ? Everyone gets an free re-create or, everyone may pay for one? Should we use the creator as soon as we can or should we wait till the new features are up?
I remember when you said, everyone gets a free remap, some got around 5% of one, and some got 200%. Maybe tell us what to do before we have to make the decition this time...
I'd quite like to know the answer to this one as well. :)

Unless we are willing to cancel, we are all just blowing smoke.
at least your guy looks Nordic.... my PVP character apparently HAS to be black since he was a Brutor (and we can't change between races). Shame on me for selecting a bloodline a year and half ago not knowing anything about the Eve universe. I'm just going to wait out for an update that allows Brutors to be more of a Germanic tribesman.

I have to agree with the complaints I'm reading regarding the portrait selection at the end of the process. Why would we be permitted to take four portraits, then not have the option of choosing between them? I took four portraits under the assumption I could switch between them depending on how I felt that day, which would have been a great feature.
Now I'm stuck with a permanent "WTF" face, that makes me look like a complete mouth-breather.

I added the hair and clothes but still could not see my characters face. I took a pic and saved it but was not ready to do so, but I did it hoping to see what it would look like. Will I be able to add some more features to my toon, because I am not happy with how the generator worked at this time. Please someone advise if I can redo my toon. Thanks

Yeah I'm pretty diappointed I have no tatoos anymore and that I'll probably need to pay for them in the future. Also the patch message made it sound like I would be able to mess with it for a few days but clearly I can't because I hit done instead of cancel. Also I didn't quite get the four pictures deal, and why it picked a random potrait, there should have been more instructions.
I would have like to spend more time tweaking my toon since I was required to redo something I have been happy with for 3 years.

First. I haven't actually logged into the character portrait creating tool yet, as I don't want to get stuck with a portrait I don't want (and might be forced to pay to change it). Also, I haven't downloaded the test client to test it there.
But, I have looked through a lot of the generated portraits and I cannot find any non-ideal looking portraits (except old amarrians, but they look good as old). It seems like EVE took a page from WoW, where you more or less cannot make ugly characters. WoW probably wanted to cater to those horny teenagers that now could play WoW and at the same time drool at their cross-dressing characters hot a** while running around. Though this is not WoW.
I might look like Jabba in real life, and secure enough about it to want to look like that in EVE. The only characters who's BMI is not ideal, are instead so beef that there is probably no body fat anyway.
Again, I have not actually tried the creator yet. After reading a bit more about I will try it out, and come back and apologize if I was wrong in my assumptions.

First, I am very impressed with the technology behind this new character creator. I love the high quality textures, the resolution, and the dynamic clothing and hair effects.
With that said, I'm very reluctant to make my character right now because like so many others, I don't want to get "stuck" with something I hate only to wish I had waited until the next iteration on this feature.
The two major problems I'm having right now:
1) Limited variety of options. Examples (most have been mentioned before):
- No height adjustment
- No accessories
- Limited hair styles and lengths
- Only one style of sunglasses in New Eden
- Need more clothing
1) Race and bloodline limitations
- I like my race and bloodline. I originally picked them partially based on the in-game description and partially on how the original portraits looked.
- Since I don't get to re-pick this for the new character creator, I'm stuck with whatever CCP decided these bloodlines will look like.
- One example, my original avatar was black. Now he cannot be black. I feel this could be offensive to a lot of people.
Now, I can see down the road actually walking around in stations with our new characters and visiting barber shops, dress makers, and eye wear boutiques, and then they (better) let us take new character portraits on a regular basis so we can show off our new shiny new hat (did I mention I miss my hat thing?). Things like character height do not seem like they would be flexible though, so I guess everyone will always be at eye level. Also, having multiple photos is a great idea which looks like it's already implemented, but it's just a tease by CCP. Right now, people are literally afraid to use this new toy, and that just sucks.
CCP, we need some elaboration on whats quoted below.

The creator itself is impressive but unfourtanetly for me that pales because of the very limited options. Not even close to get a decent likeness on most of the charachters (all of which i actually worked on when i created them to get something i liked).
Now most of the bloodlines look more or like the same. Same looks on many, same hairstyles, same clothing. I realize this is said to be expanded on later but we have all heard that song before. For soemthing that was meant to be one of two major parts of an expansion i class it a dissapointment so far.

Edited by: Shade Millith on 19/01/2011 03:08:05 My review
"There's plenty of things wrong with it.
The character won't bloody sit still
The face has too few moveable areas, and the movable parts have too smaller movement area. Making a snarl is impossible.
The lighting should be a moveable light source, not 7 preset ones.
Clothing options are almost nonexcistant. You have maybe 3 choices per item, and the rest is palate swaps.
There's less options for personalising the character. My character used to have metal plates on his face.
There is no proper preview of what your photo is, you get 4 tiny ones that don't show any detail. I can't even tell on them if the characters eyes are closed, because the character blinks!
Worse thing is, I'm going to be stuck with this, even if they fix these things later. Very unimpressed." ------------------------

I gave up trying to make my new portrait look like my old one, as I kept thinking "well it's vaguely like her, but it's just not her."
I thought about it for awhile and decided that would bother me endlessly. So I starting fresh and gave her a major new look. Although I managed to at least give her the same expression and attitude she had before.
I think having the character blink on the portrait finalisation stage is unnecessary, especially when photos are being taken at this point. A larger variety of clothes would also be nice.
However overall I'm satisfied with the new portrait. I'm also getting a kick out of seeing everyone elses. Amazing variety now. |

Well I really hope we get to do these portraits again at some point. When I was setting up my portrait, I took 4 snap shots that I liked. When I clicked "Save", I thought I was going to pick from one of the four snap shots. Nope! It took the current pose where I was just messing around. I hate this portrait, and its only the first day of me dealing with it

Yep, totally agree with ya on that one. What I find most odd though, is that I can create a completely new character in a free slot I have with no problems at all, but when I try to create a new face for my main character the one I actually use, it does not load in, so theres a mystery for ya. Any ideas on that one?, because I am completely bloody baffled by the whole thing. Did it really need to be changed?. Why change something that worked well, in exchange for something that is quite frankly a bit dubious.
I think maybe some creative work should be put in to the corporation management, it is more needed because at the moment it is a complete cludge fest regarding POS security blah blah, just a hint there on what you really should be working on CCP.

I absolutely love how the new character creator works and I'm deeply satisfied with the results. Sure, there could have been more options, but I am sure you will be able to buy more clothes in stations, maybe even have tattoos.
This said, people must be very short sighted when they complain about Dev waste of time, they should concentrate on gameplay things, etc. Since when graphic artists are the same programmers working on deep gameplay mechanics? They are different departments and using resources from one won't remove them from the other.

The point Id like to make is this:
These are supposed to be people from vastly different cultures that have been living on alien worlds for tens of thousands of years so why do they all dress like mordern day westerners? Do we dress like people from 100 years ago let alone 40,000 years ago and from another planet!
The tool its self is awsome but there needs to be more options and much more differences in style between the races and ability to make them look much more futuristic or alien in culture. Why the hell would an Amarrian be wearing a leather biker jacket, cargo pants and trainers!! Its just stupid and like saying that modern day dress is the peak of human evolution( in dressing terms lol) At least the amarr can still wear the hooded clock and look evil.

Well, I just got to see the new char creator today, and I think it's quite good. At least I've been able to shape the face as I like very quick (and I just couldn't make it in the old editor...) It was good to see much more hairstyles (which were almost non-existent for Sebiestors before...) The lighting for photos also looks amazing.
But, of course, as many people already said, the distinct features of all races should be brought back. You can hardly tell the difference between races now. By distinct features I don't even mean facial features, but rather tatoos, headsets, decorations, and cloathes. Really. There must at least be variety in clothes for each race. What we have now merely suits Caldari, or, maybe, Gallente. And it would be really nice if those features were implemented and we were given an opportunity to edit our avatars once again. I'm like a leaf in the wind - watch how I soar. - (ancient Minmatar lore) |

Yes it is quite valuable for telling the time, but not letting others see what it is, to wear the hooded clock!
Very ... erm ... "clock and dagger".
I myself say that the sliders' ranges are pitifully inadequate. At maximum, the age slider is only capable of a FEW wrinkles and at its full extent, the scarring looks like what might be left by a moderately bad attack of pubescent acne.

Yes, it's really just frustrating. Clothes just ridiculous, what a Harlem hip-hop style? Sunglasses are killing me outright. One kind of glasses? People, at least you've seen "The Fifth Element"? Why are removed, undo-redo? Khanid had a wonderful semi-transparent helmets and hoods, and now they are not. Where a red background with gold dragons? Where the "Fist"? Set the heap of lifeless backgrounds. Changing the light does not act on the background now!

The new editor is interesting but not nearly enough to be the best in the industry. The hair style and color options are far too limited - has noone heard about the invention of hairdyes.
Accessories Tatoos Implants Nails
Clothing and shoes styles are far too conservative and not nearly futuristic enough. You should be able to change the colors of the clothing styles and add remove pattersn from them. The backgrounds are rubbish. Since they are purely used in the photo taker - you should be able to import your own.
Seriosuly guys if you want to look at a decent range of options for an avatar creation program look at city of heroes.
IMHO - it looks like its pre-nerfed so that we all spend plex or microtransactions redoing them with more 'goodies' later on when walking in stations comes along.

everything looks beautiful. only two issues (IMHO, anyway):
1. there should be an option to make the character stand still. It wasn't a huge deal but it seems like it may not help the frame rate, and there's no reason I can think of why the character's head should be drifting left and right when I'm trying to adjust its cheekbones.
2. why on earth you'd not put a confirmation dialog box after clicking the Save button is just unfathomable.

Suckety suck suck...this runs like a dog on my machine. I want my round faced slap head guy with the tats back. When I try to recreate something close in this new thing I end up with Marty McFly ( complete with life preserver) or Vinnie Jones.... I think we should at least be able to choose to keep the old portrait. First time I came across a character creator that needs more graphics resources than the actual game. Something not quite right there eh?

Exactly. There's been threads and posts about this for months now, even proposals to change bloodline and/or race and/or at least swap portraits with other races/bloodlines - and neither CCP or the CSM (who are supposed to represent us) have EVER written any comment about this issue.
When I picked my character I chose the one who looked what was the best available to me at that time; only Achura and Khanids had access to this nice sleek hairstyle. Now I'm forced to look asian and have a very tanned look, while my original character was pretty pale and looked european. This is definitely NOT what I would have picked in the frist place, it's just forced upon me. Yes I know, some people couldn't care less, well do I care a lot!

Mind you, there's an important difference. Old clothes were fixed polygons, just accessories for the portrait. The new ones are designed to be actually worn and interact realistically with the body they wrap.

Exactly... and I'm having the opposite problem with another character. I chose Brutor because I liked the description and thought of a Germanic tribesman. Now apparently I'm stuck as being black.

You could be very pale skinned. The first of the alts I remade was a brutor female. I got very annoyed when I couldn't make her have the same skin colour she had before.

It's exactly the same for me.
When I finally managed to get the thing to log in to the character creator, instead of being able to recreate my original character, ( whom I loved the look of and spent ages on trying to get her just right, ) I found that I was only able to create a rather bland looking oriental. My character looked nothing like an oriental, but now i'm forced into having one or loose my skills.
The new portrait system is rubbish, the options are few and far between, the ability to choose colours for specific parts is non existent and were limited to whatever CCP think we should look like.
I originally chose my race for the portrait and the ships it had, ( I hate non symetrical starships ), but I had to leave for a bit due to various thngs, I came back to the game because I was intregued about the new Incarna system.
If it stays as it is, then i've decided that i'm not going to renew my account when the current time runs out. I refuse to play as a character that I can no longer recognise as my own.

My other character pulled it off by changing the features to my liking and the color palette allowed for a much lighter skinned Brutor.
Sothryn Omidira's creation looks great. I need to figure out what they did with the lighting. Frankly, I'm still disappointed CCP didn't let us change bloodlines.

This character creator is a real nice tool, but something bothers me. You can't create really old or fat toons, or at least "realistically" ugly. This is particulary true regarding the female creation. Whatever you do, you always end up with some sexy futuristic or manga-like b.... . I tried to make an old female retired pod pilot on one of my accounts and the only thing I could get was some kind of 30 yo sexy (more or less) blond.
Leave that part to the coreean MMORPG and their frustrated teen players! Give us the right to get real mature avatars inspace!

Actually I liked the new creator, its realism and especially that the characters can now be more diverse. But I've already faced some bug in my character's portrait - in the game it appears with the robe hood on his head, though I made it without one and it wears no hood on start page image. Now I'm waiting for the promised opportunity to redesign the portrait.

I've never seen an Achura or Khanid who looked anything other than Oriental under the old system, but I agree that the old portraits were a major factor in deciding which bloodline to choose (since there was negligible difference in the skillsets, and you could just fly to whichever part of New Eden you wanted to work in). It shouldn't be difficult to swap bloodlines (even if it's not realistic, but hey, changing your face halfway through your life isn't either) and I'd happily train Gallente Frigate or any other racial skills if it allows me to change bloodline and look like what I wanted to look like. I'm lucky my Ni-Kunni didn't really suffer much, while the Oriental portraits are all improvements in my opinion (they were always meant to be Oriental). Deteis, Brutor, Intaki and several others really need some love, though, or the option to change to something nicer.

Edited by: Valdemir Nonato on 20/01/2011 12:54:17 Also what about a little bit more more than the few limited choices we have regarding to hairstyle? There is like no interesting hair, especially for male characters; it's all short (except from the dreadlocks). Also usability in for example the backgrounds is far below optimal. And surely it should be possible to at least change clothing colours, limited and arguably unimaginative as they are? And maybe different types of (sun)glasses too?
Since we're on it, tattoos? The Minmatar poster girl has tats, we can't get any. Huh?
Besides that: do love it :)

Yes this indeed needs to be fixed. Would be nice to have more modifications to avatar then just stretch a lil here and a lil there.I mean come on if you are going to stick us with this toon let it be something that we like.not something we have to settle with. They should allow people to pick between races for these new avatars not everyone wants to look like trolls. Just saying.

Now that the expansion update has been postponed, this would be a good time to add larger snapshot thumbnails. Especially since snapshots are really that: taken just when your character may have her eyes closed or something. It's really important to get that right. Like the clipping errors in my hair. I assure you, they weren't there in 'big'.
Actually, the problem is even worse. Not only is the snapshot-making process, for the forum images, rather fickle, but apparently a different snapshot is being used for the log-in portrait (or vice versa?). To wit:

Chances are that everybody who cannot run the Character Creator now won't be able to run the game at all once Incarna is upon us. So they should take this as a warning, go to a friend with a modern computer to recreate their chars and in the meantime save some money to upgrade their hardware before the next expansion...
...or quit. Computer games are expected to evolve as hardware evolves, and the price for that is that we have to own reasonably modern machines. EVE may lose some players who are unable or unwilling to modernize their computers every few years, but it will gain or keep others who would quit if EVE's graphics were to stagnate.

I hate losing time updating something that matters so little about that game.
How about ship models update? Better gameplay performances? That would bring more to the game than increasing realism on a 32x32 pixel avatar picture...
