I am unsure as to how many other people share this fascination, but the Size of the Universe and everything in it just completley astounds me. The scale of this game is just as amazing. The size of the Systems and Stations are incredible. Yet one thing I am unsure of, is the size of the ships we fly around in. I zoom in close on my various Caldari vessels and there are lines of blue square-shaped lights. Are these tiny squares windows that cover most of a 'floor' inside the ship? If so then these ships are gargantuan. Or are these blue squares just decorative lights and the ships are infact much smaller.
Anyone able to share any info on this subject?

OP what you'll find in EVE is what I deem "the curse of the inconsistent windows".
Like you, any time I see a glowing patch/area on a ship in a sci-fi context, we assume it's a window (unless it is obviously a light). My biggest pet peeve in EVE is that the ship designers have felt that adding little glowing things all over the place just because it looks cool has completely destroyed the ability for us to perceive the ship's sizes properly.
There are some ships which obey the "window light" rule, namely very large ships. Others, such as small frigates, the rifter, etc, you find yourself thinking "well if that patch of light is a window, then this ship has to be ten times larger than the specs say".
In short, ship design in EVE hasn't been given much thought. There are impossibly believable features all over the place (like km long ships with itty-bitty cockpits sticking out in the middle of nowhere), not in the least the improper use of the light=window rule.

Yes, please remember that next time you step off from a height and presume gravity. The assumption is from every standard space sim that every existed before EVE and obeys the rule. Take a look at any ship from any of the well-known space sci-fi's and you'll see they obey the rule. So yes, I'm assuming that, because it's in the general set of assumption one takes when going into a space sim MMO, and not that lights exist on a ship because "ooooh lights are pweettty"

Edited by: Bazzyrick on 14/01/2011 15:41:09 Several things confused me about determining the size of the ships. One of them was ofc the window/lights thing. Some are obviously just flashing lights, but then some do look like windows. Another thing is some ships (again I'm talking from Caldari experience) Have a large opaque glass cover where I'm assuming the bridge is. They never seem to be on the same scale as the other 'windows' on the ship, if we assume thats what they are. Another thing I also didnt know that the ships in EVE arent to their correct scales. I havent got past Battlecruisers yet.. so (begs for forgiveness).

Is there a Bridge? Bridge is a command center on a vessel, but since it's all done from the Pod, I would assume there isn't the need for a Bridge. So those large opaque glass covers you see (I'm thinking of the Manticore personally, though there are others) might just be large glass opaque covers.
I've never noticed the window size comparison for smaller ships, though one could assume that the windows on a Kestrel are just smaller windows, maybe portholes, and the windows on a Raven are full ceiling to floor windows.

I already knew about the chart and size of the ships but what I feel we really need is some way to emphasise the size of them and give a feeling of scale.....like the engine trails for instance?
I think that some sense of scale is missing.

Capsuleer ships tend to be regular ones with a pod fitted though, so I guess the covers would be bridges on a ship with a normal crew.

I like to think (for my own role playing purposes :P) that there is a bridge but my holographic avatar is on it giving orders even though most are done by my thought.

I'd always assumed capsuleers didnt stay in their pods all the time it sounds a bit stupid, especially considering we can have numerous clones not in the pod and will be able to wander freely around Space Stations (This summer I believe?). I thought the pod was fitted to our ship somewhere like an escape pod and we were on the bridge commanding a crew or piloting the ship alone/with a crew.

According to EvE lore, we are not "stuck" in our pods. When we dock we can leave them (this is what Incarna is all about, instead of imagining ourselves leaving the pod we will be able to actually do it).
While in space though, we are technically in our pods (you can imagine otherwise if you wish) as it allows us to interface with the ship directly and cut out the "command structure" of a traditional crew. This allows us to do things deemed "impossible" by "normal" people and is [supposedly] why killing NPC rats is so ridiculously easy.
The clone thing is something that is directly related to our pod. If the pod suffers from even the slightest hull breach then the equipment we are hooked into "copies" our minds, transfers it to a new body, and kills the old body (if it's still alive). If you are killed outside of the pod (and without all the equipment that you are hooked into) then your mind cannot be transferred and you die a permanent death. Though, this might change with the advent of DUST 514 and Incarna, so who knows. _______________________

tho, what of jump clones? i would assume if your out-of-pod death can be confirmed, you would be wise to have a clause in your will where you last active jump clone is awakened? ________________________________ : Forum Bore 'Em : Foamy The Squirrel - [jedi handwave] "There is no spoon." |

Jump clones are a separate system. Think of them as "extra bodies" that are "blank" until your mind "jumps" into them, leaving the old body as the "blank" one (in other words, you still need equipment to transfer your "mind").
Also, I believe there are some in-game "laws" setup by the various empires to prevent more than one clone from being "active/functional" in any way at any given time (something about ethics and impersonation... I'm a bit fuzzy on the details).
This doesn't mean that some people can't/don't add a bit of "creative flair" to their fanfics. I wrote one awhile back that had Jump Clones act almost exactly the way you perceive it as (i.e. if you die out of pod your jump clone becomes active). _______________________

That Crysis engine video was really quite illuminating.
So, lemme get this straight - Battleship = really big skysc****r sized, Dreadnaught = floating fortress, and Titan = floating city... with the firepower to wipe out several major population centers in a single attack. Fun! And frightening...
