What is going on in Yulai? Yulai-Kemerk gate was packed. Local is a mishmash of chatter. Is there an incursion going on already?

The Revenants in Yulai certainly seem to think so, but yes, catching Sansha Kuvakei would be a nice feather in any troll's hatà ùùù ôIf you're not willing to fight for what you have in ≡v≡à you don't deserve it, and you will lose it.ö ù Karath Piki |

I only went to watch the attack, it was massive lag so decided to leave. I found a load of ships sat on the Tourier gate and wondered what was going on, then I found out when I attempted to jump out to leave others to the lag, we were all stuck trying to jump out.
I eventually just logged. ------------------------------------------------ Quafe is people! |

I'd also like to commend you on your great new traffic advisory approach:
- Accept the jump-in request, don't execute it and start a timer.
- After the timer is elapsed inform the user that the original jump-in request is expired.
- Don't accept further requests

0_o I didn't expect a response, but awesome, thanks!
It was a real disappointment unfortunately due to the fact that everything completely died on it's rear, but at least you know now what to expect when you get players all excited and it's a high-sec event!
I'm sure you guys all did what you could to get it stable, I'd love to go to other events, but it's left a bit of a sour taste when you can't really even communicate what's happening except for with out-of-eve tools.

Lets put it this way. I think at max Yulai was at just below 1700 people.
I turned all brackets and effects off. I couldn't shoot. I couldn't align. I couldn't release drones. If I did at planet V, I'd then all of a sudden warp to the sun and 5 minutes later 4 drones (out of 5) would be released. No idea what happened to my fifth HG-II. Then when I finally got the drones back in... I'd warp to Planet V to check on the Sansha slave ship and to start hitting it. I could shoot. When I started following it, I couldn't NOT follow it. I couldn't stop. I couldn't warp off. I couldn't do ANYTHING for 15 minutes.
This was a cluster Fudge to say the least.

You know the saddest thing about this is that somewhere you will read that this was another great record, a brilliant technical achievement and a demonstration of true excellence to have so many pilots in one system, fighting it out, without the server crashing.
Of course you won't read about the crippling lag, the 20 minutes required for jumping out of this mess and the hour you have to spend without local after crashing with your client or that you were lucky to fire one round in 90 minutes, no matter how much you manually cycled or ungrouped or whatever or the GMs "we can't do anything - you should be back in control soon".

Well that was not fun at all. CCP FIX YOUR MAJOR BUGS before you release it! I was unable to do anything useful as soon as I warped in. I just had to sit there till people logged off or were able to warp out. I was expecting some slowdown. but not to the point it was at. CCP I have NEVER been disappointed in you before today.

The only time I experienced any real lag was when morsus mihi did a leroy in local. Otherwise the entire event at worst was about a 20 second delay on actions. Pretty impressive at least from my personal experience.

This is not going to be representitive of the incursion feature, in any way. It's an event, and 1700 people turned up to it, which even Jita would struggle with.

Just want to take a minute ot thank CCP for at least doing the best you can as it stands. These live events are very cool and, while the lag was pretty terrible by the 1700 player mark (being blunt, haha) it was still interesting. I do love the live events and don't want them to go away but I really, REALLY hope that you can do more to cure the lag of huge player numbers in single systems in the future.
Perfect that and you arguably perfect EVE. Everything else is minor by comparison.

I think the amount of people in system should've been capped. This is something CCP does for Jita and they should have been well aware of the possible numbers for this event as well. Must have hopped out somewhere in the jump and i just don't remember. Thanks CCP

I do not know what you people are complaining about.
First I went to Yulai to pick up Fat Belly, a ship I had left in system from the time Yulai was the central trade hub of New Eden. Then I warped around a bit, saw the Revenant at the sun, engaged and watched it disappear. Then flew to planet 5 and engaged the Revenant there. Took some time so I got bored and left Yulai instead.
No lag issues except I had to shoot my gun manually, but it reacted all the time then.
Btw. I could run a second instance of EVE while being in Yulai with my alt who was in Rens.

Hehe I laugh at you ppl that are saying you are dissapointed with the lag. I don't think you are aware of what you are asking of the system... just think about it.... 500 ppl at the sun... you start shooting the enemy. All other 500 ppl around you need to get the info that you are shooting. Now mulitply this with 500 cos they are all also shooting.... man the load and the amount of IO the server need to do....
Amazed it did as well as it did.

Normal fleetfight settings were in effect. Unless you turned off your brackets, turned off autorepeat and set everything as low as possible you would have had crushing client side lag which has nothing to do with the node. I had my client set up for fleet fights and I has no issues past a bit of modual lag which is easy to overcome.
Yeah I showed up after all to see how well it would go firsthand.

But, there's no excuse for leaving the system uncapped to at least make the game playable for the players that made it in. You guys should definitely have the stats for this after how many years of running your servers? Sorry... but I can't make light of that situation at all.
It should have been capped entry to that system. You guys have the stats on your equipment's capabilities. If you don't... then I don't even know how to address that. EPIC FAIL. Drakes ROCK! |

I was chatting in fleet and in corp throughout, and funnilly enough most of the people who completely lagged out in the engagements were running standard overviews. Not all but many. I was badly lagged- manually recycling modules etc and big delays- but it stayed more or less trundling along and stuff got done.
CCP's big mistake IMO was making the targets so uninteresting- huge fat resist monsters, just sit and shoot for an hour, blah. And now they're apparently off in Promised Land but most people seem to have lost interest.

Whenever CCP does some special event thing, it attracts thousands of people, correct? And the server simply can't handle that many. So how do we have special events and keep server running smoothly?
The answer: Kill people!
As soon as player count starts approaching dangerous levels (for server stability), the event staff get really angry and start killing AND podding people right and left, until the numbers return to managable levels.
It's the perfect solution. Who's with me?

To be fair the event staff couldn't kill people because 1. They were trying to use fighters to kill ships like true newbs 2. The lag pretty much shut down their own controls as well.

Haha. If you think the lag in yulai was bad with 1700+ in local all shooting you must run level 4 mission deep in safe highsec for a living.
What's your point? That an unplayable event would be more tolerable to the average player if they were subjected to those conditions on a regular basis?
The point is that for having 1700 people in local and all shooting you could do it with minimal modual lag. Normally if you are in a nullsec fleet fight with 1700 players you simply don't load the screen at all for maybe hours and when you finally do load you are either dead or have half hour or worse modual lag. Then the node dies.
But being an empire carebear in a system that rarely goes over 40 max you wouldn't know this.
The new supernode really is super it seems.

You are still missing the point. Yulai survived 1700 pew pewing players and only lagged a bit and on top of it all the node didn't die. This is unheard of in eve for such a massive fight.
As far as the 'know how to fight in lag' comment well you have to do what you have to do. Sorry that the general technology for single sharded servers isn't up to your carebear standards. I heard sto does instances so you won't have to worry about lag. Oh whoops even that lags too I hear. Usually much worse than eve.

Not everyone gets the same experience. For me the event was not "playable". If CCP are gonna hold these events they need to be able to offer a decent experience for everyone attending (or limit the numbers).
If CCP want to put up an SLA of what is "playable" for certain numbers of people in a system that would be a great help. But seeing as a lot of factors are outside their control I cannot see that happening.

well imo there is a difference between lag and unplayable...
Last incursion in ashab..was unplayable...
Today in Yulai was better...there was lag..a lot of lag, but with patience you could manage your modules (set weapons not to cycle) and warp off, lock target etc...

I took a Geddon and quickly slapped a drake for my alt. I was able to put some damage with geddon by manually clicking the guns every 4 seconds.
My alt in Drake was useless, barely got 4 rounds of missiles out for the 2 hrs. I guess missiles are bad on laggy situations so next time I'll bring him in a turret based BS.

Well... what I think is really the main issue here, is that if that kind of fight is insupportable, then why the frak allow more than a sensible and workable number inside of that one system in the first place? Past events have lagged as bad, or actually worse at times, a cap limit on numbers would seem to be a decent idea for future events.
I'd bet the only reason this cap limit has never been done for nulsec lagfests, is probably cos you'd instantly get enough of your own guys inside to block the opposition from entering... For live events a limit could work tho.

That's not "minimal modal lag". That was just hosed.
Welcome to a full scale fleet engagement. This is normal. Or did you think the constant complaints about it, pushed through the CSM, were because we just liked to complain about nothing? I'm guessing a lot of you have never actually seen a large engagement before, nor lag of this nature. That'd be the "soul-crushing lag" that gets complained about sometimes. In an engagement such as this, some will be able do to nothing. Some will be able to take minimal actions. Some will be able to act with only a minor delay. It's a crapshoot to tell which one it'll be for you, but if you're running a client that isn't set up to specifically combat it, you're putting yourself in a hurt locker. Perhaps the 'bears should stay away from these events because in honesty you all have no idea how to engage in that type of situation, don't know what you're doing, and aren't really adding anything.
Overall I was fairly pleased with the lag. Modules were working (though autorepeat failed, you had to manually cycle guns - more on this in a moment), but my AB jammed on (again normal behavior) and cap use seemed not to be working (again par for the course). Ship was fairly responsive given the circumstances. Issues I saw were odd grid size changes (grid seemed to only be about 20km at one point near the sun - I went off grid orbiting at 12km firing on the mothership) and of course the infinite ROF gun problem. What's been happening recently is that with the new patch, the guns under heavy lag don't autorepeat, but fire every time you click on them, regardless of their ROF. I went through an entire autocannon clip in about 10 seconds, with the only delay being what the server could register. This is certian to be exploited in any large scale engagement and should be fixed asap by CCP. Also fix the gang bonuses you also managed to break. How CCP breaks things that they're not even working on in a patch is beyond me but it's happened again.

It took many people an hour to either undock or jump into Yulai. It's not just a few cycles module lag, that's the norm for 300+ ppl highsec mission hubs. Carebears are already used to it as normal background noise. It's no different than null blob lag, the only difference is that since it's concordland, and incompetent CCP staff hit small ships with fighters, few ppl actually got killed.

ALL HAIL KIM JONG LAU!
I was in the NC fleet. My experiences were more positive. The lag wasn't that bad. I have seen far worse. I liked that you could fast-trigger your guns (i was in an Hellcat fit Abaddon) so i was blowing out salvo's every 3 seconds or so. Pretty nice. Can we haz that in normal fleetfights and pve as well? Dishing out 4000-5000 dps looks like fun.
All in all i found this event to be pretty meh. The overacting in local was pretty bad. Fortunately the NC was there to provide with witty commands and words of praise of our beloved leader Vuk Lau, may his name be praised by many generations. I hope next time our brosefs from Goons and TEST also join in. They are even funnier when talking in local, though keeping up with reading tends to get hard after a while..
We amassed a fleet because TraderJohn said the system would effectively be 0.0 and that concord wouldn;t do anything hoping to create a tsunami of carebear tears for everyone to drown in. Our dissapointment was great when normal concord rules still aplied. We had a volunteer check this out. He will be reimbursed. Vuk Lau, our wise and just leader, loves his soldiers. Anyway, we shot some at the Sansha stuff, managed to secure all three revenant BPC's and went home again to bathe in our isk and technetium.
Moderate fun was had. ___________________________________

I never stated I has no lag. Well I take that back. After jumping into yulai when it was still around the 1500 mark there was hardly any lag at all. Then morsus mihi started doing leroys in local which certainly started things lagging a bit then it hit the 1700 mark which is when the worst lag hit with up to 30 second delays for actions. But again compared to a normal fleet fight this was like ratting in your very own system.
tl;dr this was a massive improvement to how fleet fights play out.
As to the ones going boo hoo my live event wasn't smooth like my missions?

i could understand you want these events to be unique but like these incursions. just spread them up through a couple of systems in eve so the load gets spread out maybe. it will probally still just atract more people in every of those systems but could probally try it.

Originally by: CCP Yokai We were aware and mapped the biggest badest server to it... Not sure there is a server made that could keep up with the awesome turnout!
With all due respect, Yokai, I'm just at a loss to understand CCP's design philosophy here. And I'm not alone.
By now, both players and devs are painfully aware that lag quickly reaches unplayable levels when many hundreds of pilots converge on a single system to do battle, even on EVE's most powerful servers. CCP has made herculean efforts to push the boundaries of what is possible within a massively multiplayer environment, an endeavor which deserves praise from gamers. That said, it seems way past time that CCP acknowledge that there is only so much that can be done with today's technology, and that a better solution is to account for this by designing new features that present fun and challenging opportunities for players to participate without encouraging massive, server-crashing blobs. There are numerous ways this could be accomplished and EVE players have been more than willing to offer suggestions on how it might be done without placing artificial restrictions on EVE's sandbox.
Incursion in its current form appears to have been designed from the ground up to practically guarantee a gigantic blob and unplayable lag. The NPC opponents are so tough and the situation so unpredictable that there was never any doubt whatsoever how this was going to turn out. Why? This appears to just be bad design at this point.
Honestly, CCP needs to acknowledge that lag is a serious technological problem and stop trying to overcome it with a brute force approach. A far more elegant solution would be to design new features that encourage and reward small-medium-size gang warfare, not practically force players to "bring the blob or don't bring it at all."

The lag actually wasn't that bad considering how many people were in system and how much **** was going on at once.
All you mission bears who are whining are probably the same ones who say 'lol we deal with lag in highsec too' everytime a major fleet fight goes to hell. This was actually extremly managable compared to what the average 600 man fleet fight in 0.0 is anymore.
Welcome to eve. It sucked, it's broken, but at least this gives me some faint glimmer of hope that CCP is once again moving in the correct direction.

For those that were already at Yulai before all started it wasn't that bad, some 4-5 seconds for actions to execute for the duration of all the event, and for like 5 minutes some worse lag, but not bad. we where like 1700 or so, but then all the people that tried to join after the event started, got stuck in the gates. It's like the proxy servers that connected to Yulai got hammered, but inside Yulai, things were not that bad (well, you got to turn off brackets and regular stuff).
I enjoyed it, mostly because the rp event in itself, not because all the combat.
Also, incursions will indeed be spread all over eve spanning whole constellations, if I'm correct.

Incursions are spread out across an entire constellation with each system having lots and lots of sites. The maximum ships you will ever need in a gang are around 50 or so for the largest sites so I simply don't see any meaningful lag happening especially if ccp maps the incursions systems to the new super nodes.

I didn't have to wait an hour. I got into yulai in about 3 minutes max when it was at around 1500. Then went on to absolutely enjoy the very short activation delays and infinite rof weapons. Oh sorry you didn't inform yourself on how to succesfully play in a fleet fight situation.

Sorry guys for fooling you into this but CCP was unhappy with recent turnouts to the Mass Tests on Sisi so they asked me to bring 1500+ to empire system so they can properly test the Incursion code4. I couldnt deny that offer, especially cause CCP is blackmailing me to dance as they play after they caught me red handed with trillions of dirty isk on my accounts.
The good thing is that test was complete success and imba looters of NC got me 2 Revenant BPCs.

re: this.. "its not that often we can get the carebears to actually experience what its like trying to play the nullsec game"
and this.. "we can figure out how to make even unplayable situations playable "
Kudos to the nulsec-ers for managing to beat it as well as you obviously do, indeed the lag in Yulai was better than other live events invasions I can think of including node and whole-cluster crashes, but don't u see something even slightly wrong with accepting or defending this playably-unplayable situation in the first place?
Answers to it are obviously complex and there's likely no one solution to it all, but spreading the load out from one focal system might be a start, including sov warfare.
p.s. ever played Frontlines?

This is certian to be exploited in any large scale engagement and should be fixed asap by CCP. Also fix the gang bonuses you also managed to break. How CCP breaks things that they're not even working on in a patch is beyond me but it's happened again.

Pubbie is an accepted descriptive term for a certain kind of eve player. So its not name calling its simply a way to describe a kind of mentality to the people that get it.

QFT. It wasn't smooth, it wasn't a great player experience but it stayed up throughout, I kept flying around and shooting things occasionally, and the event actually ran its course without "spacial disruption". Yet all people can do is cry about the negatives. If CCP want to claim it as a triumph or a total success, that's BS too but some people want the moon on a stick.

The event might have been a milestone in number of players in one system but it was not FUN for lots of people who turned out. It was a bad game design decision. I think most of us are looking for CCP to acknowledge this and reply with a solution. I hope they have learned what not to do and will make it more fun for more people next time.
A solution would be to spread each event out over 10+ systems, preferably 20 jumps apart. This way most people will have an event close by and it will spreed the number of players per instance. But congrats to the team for having the server not crash! Now fix the gameplay please.

Edited by: M3ta7h3ad on 24/01/2011 01:58:58 It was great. While things were not instantaneous (performance took the biggest nosedive after 1000 logged in) it was playable.
Set guns to non-repeat Turned off brackets and set overview only to show sansha ships
Played.
Yes launchers were locked on however dropping target lock would clear that. Relocking target was not lagged at all, damage notifications operated as expected and approach/orbit worked if you gave it 5 seconds or so to pick up the command.
Only thing I found bugged was chat.
What was amusing was CCP YOKAI logging in at 800 users exclaiming "800 omGZ!" or something to that effect when 5 minutes before we were hitting 1700+. ----- If you kill all the wolves, your gonna end up with a crapload of bunnies, and by bunnies I mean stupid people

The live events have never been fun even when they didn't get swarmed by hoards of players. All they have ever been is an excuse to post what for all intents and purposes is an npc capital ship kill on your killmail board. If you look deeper they have all been stealth technology tests for tweaking the servers out to finally(really finally not just Soon finally) kill the lag beast in our time.

That would be good to have even minimal lag. But to do this on purpose, running a server stress test... makes it less of a game and more of a tech demo. It should have been advertised as such.

This was a live event. Incursions don't have real people on the other side of the guns. Then again, the CCP event staff are so horrible at fighting perhaps it will be an improvement.

Thats the funny thing. This was totally player organized. CCP didn't do anything at all to spread the word and only had a couple of bored interns in some ships for people to shoot and the devs running whatever test they do during such times. Just like they do with fleet fights that they are notified about so don't think it was only for this event. Besides I'm sure ccp was just as suprised at the turnout as anyone else if their comments in local were any indication.

No, for the exact reason you would've wanted it advertised as such: because then nobody would've attended, and CCP wouldn't have gotten the data they needed. People do not hesitate to complain about lag but usually can't be bothered to help CCP in their attempts to fight it.
This way CCP get their data, some lucky players get BPCs, low sec pirates get a swarm of dozens of carebears to shoot at (which they never stop crying for), and role-players got some continuity **** to setup the actual Incursions. Not bad for a day's work I should think.
Also: you nullseccers who handwave the lag in Yulai under 1700 players as 'nothing' compared to your fleet fights? Have fun out there, because you can keep that ****. I won't be moving to 0.0 unless there's literally nothing else in the game that I haven't done yet.

To be fair to the way you play in nullsec the 'soul crushing lag' of fleet fights isn't really an everyday thing. The majority of the time you are out on much smaller roams or exploring or the ton of other things you do out there. And if the guys having the fleet fights tell ccp ahead of time then their fight doesn't even effect the rest of nullsec at all so the net is that the majority of the time its about as lag free as high sec. But if you don't like the lag of big huge fleet battles then call in sick to eve that day and go mission in empire with an alt.

I've been there on my own once or twice to visit old friends and such and didn't have trouble (but it was always in covops and I don't think I ever turned the cloak off). My post was based purely on the comments of yon brave men and their proud lagfests.

For what it's worth, wormspace mechanics have and still do work well for small gang warfare.

Congrats to bff Morsus Mihi for getting those BPCs. Looking forward to lighting your cynos.
To all you carebear pubbies, quit crying about how much it sucked. Get a job, learn a little about computers other than how to talk 1337, buy yourself some decent hardware, and put together a rig that can do what you want it to do, instead of settling for some one-size fits-all crap-in-a-box homo-genized SUX5000.
To all of you who can't be bothered to read and want the entire eve experience spoon-fed to your fat face, read up. Incursions will be spread out over an entire constellation. It won't be anything like what went down in Yulai.
To CCP, congrats on getting all that pew pew working in one system, even if it was a lag-fest for some lazy and/or uninformed failboats.

Tip: Eve is not a distributed computing platform, your own pc does not have any impact on lag whatsoever.

I think he was talking more about client side lag which is graphical in nature and not server related. If your only getting 3fps then nothing is going to work very well as you client won't be able to process your clicks consistantly or it simply crashes.

Its really sad to see how manny people have grown costum to server lags, and then thinking they know it all cause they been in a few fleet fights. Even more stupid then the fact that loads of people there dint get a good experience out of the event.
But atleast now i can see it, and laugh about those silly ******s trolling what they call carebears. I had to miss out on the local trolls cause my chat was gone due to this so called 'Event', this thread is good replacement for it tho.
3 cheers for forum PvP
On a side note, if CCP really wants to lag test TQ's High-Sec areas, make a proper lag test event and im sure there wil be even more people there to help crash the 'Super Node'

Sure they can. Being a paying customer doesn't buy you any rights beyond what the developer wants to give you, and if they choose to start setting pop limits, then that'll be what those paying customers are paying for.

Well I was there, and I loved it. Yeah, it was laggy, but it mostly worked (weird glitches aside).
Lets look at this more closely ... there were 1700 in local. Around 300-500 at each site. That it was mostly playable shows the servers could handle 600-800 in system pretty well, with a few glitches. When it dropped to 500 or so, there were plenty of players getting their jet-can PVP on with no issues.
This goes against everything I've heard about 0.0 blob warfare and makes me optimistic for the future of the servers
If CCP want anymore testing, I'll be there. As for whether this is "the way to do it" or not, I say do it. Honestly, who would turn up if CCP said "Erm, right ... please everyone go here and erm, mill around a bit. KTHXBAI"
That hundreds of players were cycling modules / drones / etc at mostly single targets lets CCP measure performance more accurately, and improve & tweak the underlying algorithms.
Whiners will only see the negative side of things, that's a given. But a lot of those who turned up had fun.
Oh and to all the "OMG Incursion sux!" people - look at the site info. They're all designed for small-gang completion, not blobs. I have every confidence this will evolve into a great game feature.
Also - funny effects:
- That I could fire weps as fast as I could press F1. I calculated my peak at 10,000 dps before fear of RSI got me - I launched 5 drones ... and 20 appeared on grid controllable. They were all "fighting" for a while .. but, I never saw them again. (Anyone interested in their funeral arrangements, PM me) - No matter what I did, my cap held at 100% - I got bumped and got my Mael up to 4k/s
How is that not fun?

Just checking in to say I was there and I had fun!
High end machine, was getting good FPS but yeah problems with cycling weapons, launching drones and keeping range due to lag. However there were 1700 of us in there all activating lots of modules and launching drones, not to mention the NPCs. The people who I noticed having problems in our fleet were those who had to have more people on their overview (Fleet commander, scouts etc).
Not CCPs fault that we all wanted to be there! I hope we get more live events after the incursions start, but am not too hopefull. ""

Sorry, node was re-enforced at downtime today and is on the biggest node. Just more players than this little system could take.
For the first few incursions I would suggest having multiple systems have an incursion at the same time to split up the player base willing to go to an incursion so it will not get that high in any one system.

Confirming that even though the ashab event peaked at less than 1/3 the number of the yulai event the grid where the sanshas showed up was completely unresponsive. I was using no effects, all graphics settings low, no brackets and even logged off my other client. After failing to target the revenant and sitting on grid unable to leave I was finally forced to logoffski in order to get away from the mess. On the plus side the rest of the system was totally fine, just the grid with the event on it was an unplayble nightmare, one of the most un-fun things I have ever done in eve. _____________________

This has always been an issue - they started out with the wrong platform to begin with. However, now we are 8 years down the pipe, a complete system rewrite would be a heavy, heavy undertaking considering how much CCP already have on their have on their hands.
Still, if they did it, I would love to see them do it in something else than Python. Why not have a look at Erlang? Yes, it would take some time for them to train their staff, but any experienced programmer should not need long to get a good grip of advanced functional and concurrent programming. Erlang is a brilliant language, and has already proven its worth many times over in the context of massive, concurrent server environments, a picture Eve fits very nicely into.

I was probably in the (almost) perfect location at the start of the Incursion in Yulai last night - I was sat 9along with about 10 other ships, but not in a fleet) 100km from the sun when the Sansha's arrived - I postede in Yulai chat as soon as it started but there was so much chatter I doubt many people noticed!
The player blob was in large part organised the day before - one of the public channels I lurk in had sert up the rendezvous point in Alentene and they expected the incursion to happen in Yulai - their reckoning being something to do with the incursions happening in or around trade hubs.
By the time I got to within weapons range the whole area was blobbed and although my weapons cycled, they never fired; but my orbit, align and then warp to commands all worked fine.
I only really got stuck when I decided to warp out of the system and like many others got stuck at the Tourier gate.
