You hear the phrase a lot like "it's just a game", but remember, you do play with real people. Of course, you can't beat up people physically, but you can in fact hurt someones feelings.
This is why getting emotionally attached to EVE Online is bad for you. EVE Online is set up in a way to give the player lots of freedom. Trust the guy that wants to play evil and you might lose all your assets one day. If you don't like this fact at all, then at least be warned; someone might disappoint you one day.
Stuff like this happens all the time, for example Pandemic Legion recently, i bet most of them just shrugged over it.
Some people are having more fun by being good, some people have more fun being "evil".
This just depends on how they like the game to be played, regardless if they are in fact very nice people or horrible jerks in real life.
In EVE Online, it's all about risk vs reward and since you can lose everything in seconds; don't risk what you can't afford to lose.

I'm also one of them and it does not make the game boring to me. There are people who will trick and cheat in every game they play in RL just to win. They also will be dishonest just to succeed. Many of those people also play EVE. Why should they suddenly behave different ?

Riddle me this.
If my main character on this account is honest, forthright, helpful, and responsible...
... and my main character on another account is prone to nefarious activities of all sorts including (but not limited to) theft, scamming, ransoms, suicide ganking...
what am I?
Answer: A person playing a game. ===== The world will not end in 2012, however there will be a serious nerf to Planetary Interaction. |

I'm a noob. I got poded by someone in this very thread. I strayed into 0.0 by mistake. I could ***** and moan about it since the odds weren't exactly PvP however it taught me how to plot courses properly! Anyhow I figure I should route out this evil by doing evil things to evil players... and I'm going to have lots of fun doing it . The odds will be against me I'm sure, patience is a vertue...

The Game: If you don't want to get shot, don't undock.
If you don't want to have stuff stolen from you, don't undock and don't ever put anything anywhere that isn't your items hangar in a station.
If you don't want to be misled or have your trust violated, don't ever befriend anyone, not even your dog's imaginary EVE character.
Real Life: If you don't want to get shot, live on an uncharted island as far as possible from all places people with guns could come from, alone.
If you don't want your stuff to get stolen, do the above and ensure there are no animals that might steal your stuff.
If you don't want to be misled or have your trust violated, don't befriend anyone or anything, not even yourself.
If you cannot deal with having your feelings hurt then you're doing life wrong. If you cannot understand that online games are fictional universes, even if the character(s) you're interacting with are controlled by people, you should never read any works of fiction whatsoever, as you will undoubtedly have a problem with any evil characters and subconsciously believe the author had some kind of homicidal or otherwise evil ethics/morals/tendencies, which is incredibly silly to do.
You should not be drawing parallels of character (behaviour) between a fictional character and the person that is creating it; to do so is to be naive to your own negative impact you have on anyone else in an online game by the mere act of being logged in. --- Sig removed till it's relevant again. |

Anyone who thinks that player actions taken in an internet spaceship game reflects in any way on that players' real-life character and integrity has a few issues. We are actors playing a role(unless you're ****ed up enough to think the pixels you're playing with are real). it's not like EVE just came on the market. 7 years, people. that means, you should know what it is before you subscribe. you consented to pvp the minute you bought and downloaded the game. EVE IS pvp..you can(and will be) physically attacked, economically attacked, hell, even these boards are pvp (psy-ops).
This char(new, so no history) will be a pirate. why, you ask? BECAUSE IT'S FUN GODDAMMIT. also, EVE, without such elements as pirates to spark the drama, the white-knuckle TERROR(such as it is)of having a pie go flashy in your overview, and attempt to drop the unholy hammer of evil JUSTICE on your mission-running,carebearing,easy-moneymaking-jita-trading-I never-undock-so-**** you- pimp-ship-having ass..well.
New Eden would be a boring galaxy indeed, incursions notwithstanding o7

Then be a god one, a real one and not a simple replatable pawn.
The difference between both is that one is respected and you can trust his abilityies/Skills to do his job, the other one is just a pawn acting like a pawn talking like a pawn with a very paw signature hated by the real pirates.
It's not hard to make the difference when you meet real ones and those are priceless in Eve universe but getting rares

Originally by: Burial Day All of life is full of murderers, liars, cheaters, scam artists, and thieves. I'm not sure why you're telling me this. My point isn't that EVE should get rid of those people. My arguments have been centered around making those people realize what they are.
Quite honestly the attitude of 'making those people realise what they are' is far more worrying to me than that of the EVE player who ganks defenseless targets for laughs. You seem to be presupposing a level of intellectual and moral superiority that is entirely unfounded and borders on downright sinister.
You talk about 'murder without consequence' and yet seem to completely miss the point that the lack of consequence is what totally invalidates your position. When somebody is 'murdered' in EVE they suffer no real consequence, they do not die, they do not suffer pain or terror, there are no grieving families or friends, no bystanders traumatised for life by what they have witnessed.
My main used to be a -10 rat and I killed many helpless new players without a flicker of emotion, yet irl I've put myself, by choice, into situations where I faced a very real and immediate danger of being attacked and killed myself in order to protect complete strangers for no gain to myself, not because I 'had to' or it was my job but simply because it was 'the right thing to do'. How does that fit into your cosy, narrowminded paradigm?
Are some 'griefers' in EVE scumbags irl, undoubtedly. Many, however, are not and are in fact perfectly lovable and decent members of society. Perhaps your extreme and judgemental attitude is more a reflection of your own insecurities and fears than a true assessment of the psychological condition of other EVE players.

Humans are evil by nature, just look at any warzone how the winning side treat the civilians as long as they can get away with ****, murder and anything else they can think of.
I mean look at Bosnia during the Balkan war. Or the Afgan warlords that invented the "dancing man" interrogation method. Just take two prisoners, decapitate the first one, pump down petrol into what is remaining of his throat and ignite. The second prisoner will tell you ANYTHING.
In eve we just get to do what we can't get away with in a reasonably civilized country where it is a major risk to get punished for it.

Humans aren't evil by nature, if that were true to the extent you're suggesting we wouldn't have made it even this far as a species or the world would be a far far darker place than it already is.

Then the second prisoner is an idiot.
Firstly, the first guy didn't feel a damned thing after the initial slice, so what was done to the bag of bones leftover was irrelevant.
Second, the same fate awaits the second idiot no matter what he does or does not do. He should spit in their eye and make it worth his while. Terrorism only works because of morons who fall for it.

Also.. this kind of generalisation is just plain daft. Maybe you're admitting that you'd like to kill people for ****s and giggles if you could get away with it, but the evidence of thousands of years of civilisation indicates that the vast majority of humanity just want to get on with their lives and be left the **** alone. 'Evil doers' are, and always have been, a tiny minority it's simply that the impact of their actions are felt more immediately and more keenly than those of people who do good or simply do nothing.

Rawr Rawr Rawr im a evil pvper here to kill you Rawr.... Really cmon pvp and scam is part of the game dont cry about it just accept it and addapt. If you get ganked in highsec becuase your transporting everything your own in a hauler and your on auto pilot you desearve to get killed for being stupid. If your dumb enough to look at a contract and see omg it says it in local it must be true, and you get taken for a couple hundred mil. you deserve it. If someone knocks on your front door and tells you can get this amazing deal all you have to do is give them your ssn and your credit card number and you get scamed, you deserve it. Its called advanced darwinism. I'm not saying im perfect, just look at my spelling, and we all mess up but whining about it instead of improving doesnt help you at all.

you need to distinguish tween pirate and griefer. i don't like pirates much but i do understand why they do it. could possibly take a stab a pirating myself even. a griefer on the other hand has no expectation of profit he just wants to aggravate you. the experience i have is that a griefer in an mmo is usually a loser type in the real world. granted it's not a 100% thing but it's certainly the way to bet.
another thing is that people keep saying it's just a game and the guy getting hosed has lost "nothing". this is at best a specious argument. if someone blows up some pixels that took you 50 hours effort to get that's a lot of time to just write off as "nothing". to put the shoe on the offer foot imagine if carebears were able to field a weapon that made you mine or limited you to driving an indy for 50 hours of game time. think you might be just a tad ticked off when it happened to you?

This game is a stress releaver. Idk about you but I grief people for the simple fact that it is a game and in the real world you cant just punch someone in the face for aggrivating you, but in a game its is very possible and fun. Maybey people immagine that they are blowing up their boss or somthing who knows but in the end it is all fake. and not everyone enjoys the same things as you.

Do you think some-one is a psychopath for taking your queen in a game of chess, or putting you checkmate? No, he outsmarted you and won and give him a handshake and talk about what you could have done differently and why you lost, same applies to eve, it's a pvp game so better be ready for it even if you don't want to actively participate in it. At it's very core design eve is made to encourage pvp in all forms (game mechanics would be very different in many area's if it wasn't)
