It is easy to counter use drones / FOF missile's / sensor damps and possibly some others its not the best EW its a good one i admit that but can be countered if you work around countering it.
Each EW weapon as such is used for debuffing a enamy ship if used right most people are going to call OP about it but why so much on ECM?
So i ask again why are people so butt hurt about it? |

Its because when I've locked and pointed something no other ECM can get that point off till I'm dead.
ECM can, and it can do it to 4 others if the ecm is from a falcon. It also now has me ****** because I'm pointed and now unable to control range because my web stops functioning.
In small gang ECM shuts everything down, other forms of EW do not. Sensor damps could do it but its hard to get a lock range down to within inside point range. |

It's because the basic effect of ECM is simply bad gameplay. Getting killed is never exactly enjoyable, but getting killed while you can just twidle your thumbs and pray for the goddess of RNG to smile on you is just terrible. It just takes too much control and options away from the victim. It doesn't exactly help when the counters, outside of having more people, aren't exactly great against anything else.
This isn't just a problem with EVE though. Similar effects are in many games and in most of them there are game mechanics in place to prevent it from working longer then a few seconds at a time with a temporary immunity provided to the victims afterwards. Even in pen and paper games veteran managers avoid using certain enemies, because a bad roll of dice can make it so, that the players can only sit and watch as they are slowly beaten to death and they can only pray for a good dice roll to be able to do something, as in actually play the game. It has never been a good mechanic in any game and only seems to be workable when you put severe limitations on it's use. Something EVE currently doesn't do, so people will complain until the day such restrictions are put in place or ECM is finally changed to something else. |

Because the only way to counter ECM is to fit to counter ECM. This completely gimps your fit, while at the same time means you've wasted a slot if you don't encounter ECM.
Let me put it this way:
Sensor dampening: You can fit a sensor booster, which also increases your lock time and lock range. Energy neutralizing: You can fit a cap booster, which will be very useful for keeping you alive in any real fight. Tracking disruption: You can web your enemy and fit more tracky ammo, both of which will mean you hit while disrupted. Target painting: Lol. Man up and take slightly more damage. Webbing: Gotta go fast. Pointing: Commit to the fight.
Then we come to ECM: ECM: Fit a gimpy module which only decreases the chance of you being locked down, not stops it, and wastes a slot because it has no other beneficial effect. "We will create the introduction thread if that is requested by the community. Also, we will have an ISD Seminar about the CCL team in the coming weeks in which you can ask your questions about the CCL team and provide some constructive feedback to us." - Countless pages of locked threads and numerous permabanned accounts later, change is coming. |

Again, the reason ECM is such a sore point is that it is does something no other ewar does: it completely locks you out of the fight. All you can do is try to fly off and hope that no-one else is there to prevent you from doing that as well. Its only actual counter also has no additional benefits (and no guaranteed results) unlike the counter-modules for all other ewar. That double-whammy is quite ridiculous: massively larger effect from the ewar itself, massively smaller benefit from the counter-ewar.
This also hints at what needs to be done to it: make it less crippling and make the counter relevant to other tasks.
GǪand of course, on top of this, there's the random nature, which is frustrating in and of itself, and the curiously and pointlessly long cycles that offers no differentiation between different ships and classes. As DSQ points out, it pretty much combines all kinds of bad gameplay in one neat package. GÇ£If you're not willing to fight for what you have in GëívGëí you don't deserve it, and you will lose it.GÇ¥

Some points:
Sensor Damps decrease your lock range and break the lock if the target is out of the range.
ECCM increases your sensor strength and affects how easy you can be probed (signature radius / sensor strength = probe indicator size, wasn't it ?)
ECM is chance based, that has advantages and disadvantages for both sides. You can never be sure to jam a target, just increase the chance, you can never be sure to not get jammed,
The four electronic warfare approaches are supposed to be different, if you want everything getting normalized, i can recommend WOW, otherwise ... htfu ? |

Arazu/Lachesis without specific boosted sensor can't target "Tha Falcon" before the Falcon targets the Arazu/Lachesis -if one can take several ships out of the equation, the other should be able to target at least at the same speed, instead of a stupid 200km targeting range without sensor mods (Lachesis) when Damps at this range have no effect
The only viable reason why you actually use these ships being long point, and as you mentioned, a competent Falcon pilot will simply jam without a single problem the long point (106km for Lachesis all 5, faction point, claymore boosting) along with 3 other ships without much of a problem.
However if I can agree ECM is a little bit too OP it's exactly because there's no actual effective EWAR counter to ECM, Gallente Damps could/should be the one but to make this happen a lot of changes are needed to gallente Ewar and dedicated ships.
EDIT: ECCM is a little bit like RAH, they're not useless but let some pvp virtuous come here explain us everyone should fit at least one brb |

ECM has no stacking penalties in fact, it gets significantly strong with more 'dice rolls' ALL OTHER EW gets weaker, despite not being able to do enough with one module anyway.
TDs arnt as broken as damps, because 50% less range or tracking, hurts way more than 50% less target range or scan res, its not the 20 second warp out to die slowly that a jam cycle is.
This is why ecm drones are so good, 5 damp drones stacking penalized do up to one modules worth (the large ones), where as ecm drones get 5 rolls of that dice every 20 seconds and only one needs a jam at any given time.
Im surprised in a game this complicated, where your knowledge is rewarded, the game designers allow everything to hand on a dice. And they have let this happen for far too long. http://img299.imageshack.us/img299/4375/mynewsig2.jpg |

On a more serious note: If they give ECM a stacking penalty or make it so only one ECM module can be activated on a ship by any one pilot then ECM wont be the small gang/solo killer.
Or, someone said something like this earlier and I thought it was a good idea, make the ECCM module a 100% garuntee you can't be jammed. ECM fixed.

So you want protection from a contingency, but you don't want to have to sacrifice for that protection. No. People would gladly have the protection from a contingency if there was some more reason than that contingency to fit it, much like with all other counter-ewar modules. That's the whole point: the other counter-ewar is not dependent on contingencies.
You fit a sebo because it provides a good boost to your ship, and the fact that it also gives you a buffer against damps is a very neat bonus should that contingency be realised. You fit tracking enhancers/computers because they provide excellent boosts to your guns, and the fact that it gives you a level of protection against tracking disruptors is a neat bonus should that contingency be realised. TPs are a bit different in that they don't have a counter-module, but that's because they don't affect your performance GÇö only everyone else's.
GǪbut then we have ECCM, which provides no useful boost to your ship (no, being a minuscule amount harder to being probed down doesn't matter unless we're talking about the 1:1+ sigrad/sensor ratios) and should the contingency be realised where they provide a bonus, there is no guarantee that it will have any real effect.
So yes, it massively gimps your fit compared to all other counter-ewar modules. GÇ£If you're not willing to fight for what you have in GëívGëí you don't deserve it, and you will lose it.GÇ¥

The idea is that ECCM boosts your sensor strength, so maybe it should combined with some other type of module related to that function. A module which boosts scan resolution would probably be the most favourable choice. |

Before the last round of mining ship changes, miners were told to fit a tank, even though it gimped your ship for the purposes of mining. There was a tradeoff, but eventually CCP changed it .
Maybe they'll do something similar with regard to this issue. This one seems a bit more complicated though....they can't just add an extra mid slot toll the ships and dedicated EECM slots seems unworkable. Redesigning ECM seems the best route but they have to be careful not to unbalance Caldari as a whole. |

It's very simple. There are two problems. First, it's chance based. There's no skill, no tactics, no nothing, just a dice roll and you're either ok or you're screwed. Second, it's a sort of stun (which I'm defining here as a broad denial of actions). More important than practically, it's psychologically intensely annoying; it's been proven time and time again that the best way to deal with stuns is just to never, ever apply them to the player.
Is it possible for them to be balanced/fair? Certainly. The problem is that dice rolls and stuns are only fair in the long term. Fighting and player psychology don't occur in the long term, they occur in the short term. That's why win/lose rolls and stuns are universally loathed by players, however over or underpowered they may be. The other consideration is the perspective of the player. If you're neuted, tracking disrupted, damped or webbed, you may not actually be able to do anything, but you feel like you can, and that's extremely important. ECM causes the player being jammed to feel helpless because they're simply not allowed to even attempt to do anything. Other forms of EWar still give you at least the illusion of being able to pull out of the situation based on your actions. You may scoff, but the simple psychological effect of this helplessness vs the illusion of control is probably the single most important factor in why jamming/stuns always cause so much ire in games. |

add a script to sensor boosters that boosts ECCM strength (to what eccm modules used to, ie 96%), its a sensor booster right? http://img299.imageshack.us/img299/4375/mynewsig2.jpg |

Wall of text incoming. Be warned, you might learn something from my infinite wisdom should you keep reading.
The problem with ECM is like others have mentioned, it is the only kind of electronic warfare that is all-or-nothing chance based.
It is also the only type that doesn't alter ship statistics in any way but rather affects a ship functionality directly. In a bad way I might add.
EVE doesn't have any kind of "radar" (anymore anyway) or similar as any player can see any other ship in the same grid. ECM is technically jamming or confusing the opponents radar and similar detection systems but in EVE it merely breaks locks. And immersion, cause let's be honest - totally locking out a player just like that is kinda meh. In WoW terms or similar MMORPG's it would translate to you being permanently stunned or whatever by your opponent whilst he bashes your skull in.
The best thing I could think of in order to change ECM somewhat, would be to make it so that a target under the influence by ECM is unable to get a clear picture of what the grid looks like. Basically the overview should start hiding ships based on their signature radius (a bit like a cloak effect - yes if possible it should also visually affect a player aka hiding ships from the playing field).
For example, if a battleship gets a healthy dose of ECM on it, it will lose track of the smaller ships entirely. It can still lock on to bigger ships cause they are...well, bigger (sig radius) - at least until the ECM concentration is big enough to even hide those. Smaller ships with their stronger sensor strength would require quite a dose of ECM if they were to be unable to target battleships or larger targets. This means of course that ECM would still be viable on frigates, if the goal is protecting your own frigates. Going back to the battleship, should it have an ECCM or two then it would simply require more ECM on it in order to get the desired effect.
Distance should of course still play a role - the closer the ECM is to the target, the stronger the effect. ECM drones excluded of course.
This IMO would put ECM in line with all other electronic warfare by removing this whole chance based attribute, whilst at the same time not changing the way ECM functions too radically. It will still prevent a target from locking another target, but only if said target is small enough to hide from the affected sensor strength. |

Here, ladies and gentlemen, is somebody incredibly stupid. Medslot modules, such as ECM, do not affect DPS. Therefore I could choose to either gimp a shield tank (which is unfair because it then reduces my ability to defend against actual damage, even when there is no ECM on the field) or to remove a utility such as a point or cap booster (which is unfair because this either stops me holding an enemy down or reduces the survivability of an armor tank). In this way, I can choose to take high DPS, or I can choose to watch a target fly away. CCP says this system is flawed. Deal with it. Whining at ECM is a tradition in EVE. If you would remove ECM from the game it would just push all the tears on "too much logistics" or something else what's annoying. Why is ECM at the top of the list? Because you can't lock anything and in many cases it doesn't matter if you could lock or not. You would have died anyway without getting a kill. The result is the same: you jump into a t3 gatecamp with Guardians, you get blobbed without ECM or killed by a smaller fleet with ECM. Anyone who believes in fair fights or balanced PvP in EVE does not understand the game.
CCP nerfed the Falcon a long time ago and people are too lazy or not experienced enough how to deal with it. ECM gives a chance for a smaller fleet to counter a bigger one. Before the nerf it was overpowered indeed. After the nerf the killboards were filled up with loads of Falcon losses.
Ofc it's a pain but it's also a pain to - get nailed down by a Rapier at 50km while the main kills you - get killed by a bigger fleet - get killed by a t3 fleet with logistics - get killled by RR BS's - get killed by neuts - get killed by bigger ships - get killed by a hotdrop - get killed by nano-**** - get killed by Loki boosted points and webs
I am sure you will find many more examples where EVE is totally unfair and sucks because it's simply a multiplayer game where you always face a bigger fish.
ECM is meant to deal with numbers or logistics. And I see a lot of logistics around these days. On the other side you can use it to kill a solo BS in your Cruiser by perma-jamming with your alt. Sure. But there are many other different ways to die horribly in EVE. ECM is not the worst one. Bring snipers or nano-ships and Falcons are pretty useless on the field. They die fast or have to run.
The much bigger issue are ECM-drones. Nearly anyone is using them and tbh you don't need a Falcon in this case. You face a small fleet of Hurricanes. They suck your cap to death and perma-jam your ship with EC-300's out of the fight easily. Bring a Falcon and you get smacked by these guys for sure.

so to summarize that, eccm is too specialized because it just makes you harder to probe and harder to jam and you don't want to use a module slot for that?
oh that is so cute, how about "no" and also "too damn bad" make a decision, commit to a fit, if you think you can fly without eccm, do not whine around, if you think you need it, do not complain if no one tries to jam you.
this is just .. really dumb, you want essentially that caldari ecm is nerfed by the means of implementing the counter function into something else so you can fit it without remorse
yea, so if its that good, bring it yourself, not like you have to reroll from mage to warlock and level to 80
this entire ecm discussion is a great example of "nerf sissors, rock is fine", although the drone thing ~ might be worth a second look ... maybe |

When you get a chance, can you summarize whatever the hell it is you're trying to say? Or at least be more succinct and try to avoid references to World of Warcraft, whining, how cute I am and anything else that distracts from the point you're trying to get across. Application of some basic grammar to your reply will also go a long way to solidifying your "argument", whatever it is. |

Got nothing to do with numbers as numbers does not matter too much. It is rather how modules function against one another. ECM is the oddball by a longshot in this regard as it is a do-or-die module. With other electronic warfare modules, it will merely put another player at a disadvantage in one way or another, usually which results in reduced or delayed DPS. ECM on the other hand totally removes a player from the action if successful rendering with said victim absolutely no way to do anything. Unlike the other modules, when it comes to ECM you cannot solve the problem by simply moving closer or using a module that reduces the negative effects. ECCM is a module that merely increases your odds of actually participating in a battle should you be targeted. Otherwise it's a dead-weight module.
And frankly the risks of failing an ECM hardly outweighs the advantage of totally removing a ship from the action for 20 seconds. Specially not since this can be done multiple times. In a long fight, those 20 seconds can stack up quite nicely, regardless if it is a big or a small fight. Definitely beats having a reduced lock range/increased lock-time, cause you simply have to try and move closer or have a sensor booster, which normally gives you a longer than normal or stronger than normal sensor anyway. Which doesn't make it a dead-weight module. Your turrets getting disrupted? Well, you can still shoot and hopefully dish out some DPS - which may be enough to win the fight. And you can always fit modules that boost your turrets, which also acts as a counter. Getting cap drained? Same story here. Good thing that we have logistics, boosters and whatnot else against that. And even if you're drained you still have some limited capabilities at least until you're totally dry. And you can still shoot during the time you're being drained.

Because 1. It isn't 2. Situationaly very effective, but easy to kill if not.
3. There isn't a mod that defeats ECM.
True - but there are so many other ways to defeat it , many have been listed already in this thread. Simply pressing F1 can work.
So. Train ECM. Fly it. See for yourself.

Love the irony in the above statement, unless it was meant to be facetious, in which case, bravo for your wit and humor.
Will throw my own hat into the ring for a second though. I hate ECM. Can't stand it. It's about the most un-fair bullshit mechanic you could think of in this game. That being said, I trained up on ECM, bought that T1 Caldari ewar frigate and a Falcon and suddenly I don't hate ECM so much. As a matter of fact, I find it quite fun now and only think it's unfair when it's being used against me. |

GǪand that's fine GÇö if ECCM gave a buff that was good enough to fit to the same extent as ECM ships are used, the whole thing might balance itself out. As it is, though, they don't and that means that the whole GÇ£fit ECCMGÇ¥ argument is silly and doesn't actually answer anything. Fitting ECCM does indeed gimp your fit.
The argument why ECM needs to be fixed is a completely different (and much simpler) one: ECM in EVE obsoletes other ewar. This fact alone is reason enough why ECM needs to be completely removed and reimplemented. It does what RSDs and TDs do, only better, and the small detail of ECM being chance-based all the time (rather than just some of the time as with the other two) is not nearly enough to validate this massive overlap in functionality.
GÇöGÇöGÇöGÇö Long Tippia RantGäó, skip if you hate these things GÇöGÇöGÇöGÇö
As much as I dislike real-world comparisons, it's actually a good thing to reference to see what the problem is. Real-world ECM essentially does three things: it makes a target harder to lock, harder to locate with any precision, and harder to track (as in GÇ£identify from one sweep to the nextGÇ¥, not as in EVE-mechanics tracking)GǪ or, wellGǪ it does one thing, and those are the three broad effects. RSD simulates that first function GÇö a noisy signal means you have to sort through more garbage returns before a positive lock can be established, or you have to move closer to get a better resolution on the signal. TDs simulate the second function GÇö the fuzzy signal means your pin-pointing is off and your guns are pointing in the wrong direction, and you can't spot movement as well because it's just a big blob of weird returns.
ECMGǪ doesn't simulate the third function, and that's kind of where it all goes wrong. It just causes you to no longer have any kind of targeting functionality at all. If you can't target anything to begin with, difficulties in getting a lock and in figuring out to the millimetre where the target is become inconsequential. ECM should be complementary to those other effects rather than invalidating and superseding them.
Exactly how difficulty in continuously identifying a target could be turned into EVE mechanics is a different discussion, but I'm fairly convinced that it's that kind of complete revamp that is needed GÇö nerfing and patching and stitching the current mechanics will not suffice because the fundamental overlap is still around and it's the overlap that is the design flaw (and this flaw is further compounded by the player psychology and frustration in having stun effects, as described earlier). The incomplete stop-gap nature of ECCM is just one of those flawed patches, and if ECM actually did something drastically different, ECCM could in turn be given a more general and beneficial functionality.
GÇöGÇöGÇöGÇö GǪyou can stop skipping now GÇöGÇöGÇöGÇö
Basically, ECM needs to work in completely different ways from what it does now and desperately needs to stop being a horribly designed stun attack. Make the overview go wonky; make people lose their target information; remove the 20-seconds-of-non-action cycle; reduce the max target number; whatever. There are plenty of ideas already and that pesky real life thing offers hints about where to look for more. The overlap and ridiculous disability it creates needs to go. GÇ£If you're not willing to fight for what you have in GëívGëí you don't deserve it, and you will lose it.GÇ¥

I could repeat the arguments about how ECM is, regardless of balance, a bad game mechanic because of how it is chance-based, heavily binary, and prevents people from playing the game. But someone already made that argument, and the only reply it got was "deal with it".
I could repeat the argument about how ECM is, regardless of balance, a bad game mechanic because it ruins small gang warfare. But someone already made that argument, and the reply was not terribly different from above.
I could repeat the argument about how ECM is imbalanced because it completely overshadows every other ewar in the game. I could repeat the argument about how ECM is imbalanced because the only countermeasures are either not terribly effective (implants) or require you to gimp your fit with a single-use module (in contrast all the other kinds of ewar). I could repeat the argument about how ECM is imbalanced because it has no stacking penalty, unlike every other kind of ewar except neuts (which have several effective countermeasures).
I could repeat all that. But it would be a waste of words, as no one has meaningfully addressed any of those points. it's awfully hard for a debate to move forward if one side refuses to make substantive arguments.
But, fine. Let's look at some of the justifications presented for the current ECM mechanics in this thread.
Cede Forster wrote:ECCM increases your sensor strength and affects how easy you can be probed (signature radius / sensor strength = probe indicator size, wasn't it ?) ECM is chance based, that has advantages and disadvantages for both sides. You can never be sure to jam a target, just increase the chance, you can never be sure to not get jammed, Being mildly more difficult to probe is completely worthless in a fight, and is in fact completely worthless for pretty situation that doesn't involve hiding. So the countermeasure no additional benefit in a fight without ECM, unlike the countermeasures for every other kind of ewar (tracking enhancers/computers, sensor boosters, cap boosters, energy vamps, cap batteries, etc...). The other countermeasures might be a suboptimal use of a slot if the corresponding ewar does not appear on field, but the slot is not completely wasted.
(Halcyon Ingenium made a similar argument to the above quote, and the same response still applies).
Misunderstood Genius wrote:ECM is meant to deal with numbers or logistics. A fair enough point about the logi, but there are other ways of dealing with logi that aren't nearly so disruptive to the rest of the game. The numbers argument doesn't hold up, because if they outnumber you, they can bring more ECM and then kill your smaller gang while you're all jammed. Effective use of all kinds of ewar enables a weaker force to engage a stronger one by exploiting vulnerabilities in the stronger force's composition. It also enables a stronger force to crush a weaker one with even less effort than usual.
And that pretty much covers the vaguely substantive defenses of ECM in this thread. The rest has been the usual "l2p, htfu, eve isn't supposed to be fair" non-arguments. |

There's no such thing as "quintessential proof" -- or even regular proof -- in Eve theory crafting. To imply otherwise is to poison the discussion from the very beginning.
Besides, I have yet to see any empirical evidence of an actual problem and not just a bunch of anecdotes and griping by people who've been jammed.

People like their combat to be nice and neat...no surprises, no unexpected issues, no chaos. ECM introduces chaos and disorder into a combat situation that otherwise might have been cut and dry. ECM is an x-factor, something that many people do not account for, or simply do not want the headache of accounting for. Some people cannot stand when a win has been snatched from their grasp, a victory that they believe they deserve before the battle is over.
I personally support all forms of ECM, even when they have been used against me (and they certainly have been used against me), because it keeps combat from becoming cookie cutter and otherwise predictable. With the presence of ECM, all wins must still be earned, even when ECM is not present. No one is entitled to anything, and those that think they are, ECM ruins that little mindset.
ECM is one of the things that makes Eve hard. Remove it at the risk of becoming more vanilla like so many other MMO's. A good predator knows how to live in balance with his prey, lest he follow them into oblivion. |

As a recon 5 falcon pilot, I don't think many of the suggestions in this thread are worthy of serious consideration. But they should be addressed.
First, ECM is chance based, but only to a certain extent. If your jam strength is higher than the target's sensor strength, they are permajammed, and that is the only way. Chance to jam is jam str / sensor str per cycle. The maximum attainable jam strength on a Falcon is in the neighborhood of 15. BCs have sensor strengths in the range of 17-19. Logistics, recons, and T1 BS in the low 20s.
Most ECM ships do NOT focus jams on one ship, thus negating the whole multiple jammers issue because getting caught with no available jammers when enemy reinforcements arrive usually gets you or someone else popped. They cycle jammers until one hits, leaving the rest off. So let's not talk about focusing 4 jammers on one target.
ECM ships are notoriously easy to kill once you get dps on them. Get rid of their ECM defense and they would be pretty useless except as dps decoys.
Reducing the max lockable targets would be pointless. Even 1 lockable target is enough to put dps on the ecm ship. With the maximum lockable targets available to some players in certain ships, they would be completely immune to ECM. Frigates with only a couple targets would still get completely locked out. It wouldn't change anything that neesd to be changed while making certain ships immune to ECM. That would be bad game design.
Splitting scan res and range damping between Gallente and Caldari. There is a reason you don't see Arazu/Lachesis/Keres very much. Range damps are easily countered by speed fits, which are prolific due to speed mechanics reducing dps. Scan res damps are useless vs anything that is smaller than a BS. Also, damps are easily countered by the fairly common sebo, though that is not it's primary use.
Tippia made some interesting comparisons between RL ECM and Eve. Not bragging, but I work on ECM and ECCM for a living. We should be glad that eve ECM does not do some of the things that real ECM does. Otherwise we would have to dock for repairs everytime a strong ECM ship blasted our sensors at close range, thus completely burning them out.
As for how well eve ECM does replicate some RL effects, one method of jamming relies on overwhelming the target's sensors with sensor noise. This relies on knowing which type and frequency of noise to produce. Racial jammers simulate this well. There are lso broadband jammers that broadcast on many frequencies. Multifreqs do this well.
ECCM is an able approximation of boosting one's sensor strength. But if the opposing noise is greater than your ability to discern your signal from the noise, you're still screwed. And you can only broadcast with so much strength, and receive a certain level of signal before your transmitter or receiver burns out.
Another method focuses on providing an EWAR suite with false information. The simplest way of doing this would be a decoy system. Flares and/or chaff can confuse sensors and make you miss. They last for only a limited time. I'd be on board for that. But such systems rely on ammo, and are strictly defensive.
Electronically, there are countermeasures suites that do this as well. One need not burn out or even blind a receiver to make it miss or lose lock. Give it multiple targets and confuse it. This could be simulated by screwing with the overview as suggested. I wouldn't like to see things removed from the overview. That would be too much like cloaking. But adding things... that sounds interesting. Could create a lot of confusion. Can you imagine the comms?
"Primary is Falcon."
"Which one?"
"What do you mean? The ******* falcon!"
"There's 3 of them!"
"FFFUUUU!!!! Nerf Falcon!"
The easiest way to put a bit of nerf on ECM would be to make a skill that increases one's sensor strength. So easy, yet so effective. Call it "Sensor Integrity"
However, knowing what ECM and ECCM are capable of and why they do the thgns they do, I have to set myself in the HTFU section. ECM is supposed to be unfair. It is supposed to make ti so you cannot function while your enemies bend you over the barrel and ride your ass like a little *****. You are trying to kill your enemy. Why should combat be fair? There is no e-honoure in combat. Why should a simulation be any different? Fit your ECCM. Be glad you have anything at all.

By current mechanics, other than blobbing the only true way to counter logistic ships is ECM.
Sensor Damps are gimped and are usually not worth using for the purpose.
Logistic ships are a force multiplier like ECM and can usually repair far more dps than an equal number of ships can bring.
Logistic ships like Guardians are very hard to neut and stop the chain unless you have all the logistic ships in neut range, which is most of the time unlikely. |

Yes, but unlike ECM there are ways to deal with range. On top of that, keeping a longer range also means you reduce your own DPS by yielding long range weapons. If someone is using range then you have to either be able to shoot further, move faster or some such. You are in no way rendered unable to do anything. Oh, and like someone else mentioned: dont try and use your example as a specific 1vs1 situation.

My earlier suggestion to ECM wouldn't really change the situation with logistics much. If nothing else it would force them to use ECCM/remote ECCM more if they want to stay in the action.
As for the other electronic warfare, an easy way to buff them somewhat IF NEEDED would be to simply increase falloff range. It wouldn't be an overkill buff in any way, merely extending the operating range somewhat. Playing around with maximum range as well as strenght of effect at maximum range shouldn't be too hard I believe. Just require tons of testing to find a suitable sweet spot. |

It's a /facepalm logic chain you and Tippia like to follow - very "blinder" style logic.
Do you realize where some of the best "hardened" equipment came from? NASA -among other things, to reduce the redundancies of systems used to keep spacecraft and satellites operating. They developed hardened chipsets, resistant to radiation damage and electromagnetic effects cause by such things as solar-flares. The backup systems were needed for when primaries failed - not *IF* but when they failed.
IRL we don't have ships designed to be safely shielded from all the effects of space; nor do our ships pass through wormhole powered gates without messing up systems. Any ECM comparison from our day and age would be like the fears of tank crews against spearmen of the stone age - "ohh... careful of the pointy sticks!!!".
Simple fact: EVE's ECM doesn 't effect smaller, less shielded items like missiles and small drones - if these are protected, then why the hell wouldn't those "cheap systems" be put into *ALL* ships?
As for ECM vs other EW - well, the same "defenses" response to those technologies work under ECM effects - except CCP added "stacking penalties" to them because they were seen as "overpowered" - after that is when ECM took the lime-light -- lack of proper BALANCING.
Fixes? - Remove the stacking penalties from other EW - we can have "staring matches" in space as SD's go "god mode". -- OR -- - Drop the effect duration to 10s while keeping the cycle duration 20s. ECM drones? they don't coordinate firing times. Ships would *NEED* more than 1 specific mod to keep the jam going by cycling the timing correctly. Actual skills? *gasp!* -- OR -- - Block targeting of anything *EXCEPT* the ECM controlling ship. *pop* goes the EW! ...
Like the fixes?
The first one puts it back towards "weakest" EW in the game. The second requires multiple modules to keep a target jammed. The last gets your ECM EW ships relegated to the "disposable ships" category.
It is messed up and your "justifications" for the imbalances... Yup; we're talking with ECM users alright. |

Soldarius wrote:Tippia made some interesting comparisons between RL ECM and Eve. Not bragging, but I work on ECM and ECCM for a living. We should be glad that eve ECM does not do some of the things that real ECM does. Otherwise we would have to dock for repairs everytime a strong ECM ship blasted our sensors at close range, thus completely burning them out.
[GǪ]
GǪtbh, making ewar damaging much in the way of normal weapons could be an interesting way to go. We already have module damage and ways of repairing it, after allGǪ
Anyway, I was mainly talking about the effects it has on your detection ability and how some of them are simulated quite nicely by the other ewar types, whereas ECM is radically different and how it renders the others rather meaningless.
When I was talking about messing with the overview, I was rather thinking about simply removing information from it GÇö not about removing targets. Eg. suddenly all ship types are replaced with GÇ¥small, medium, largeGÇ¥ and/or names are blotted out. Or you lose things like range and tracking, as well as the damage indicators under your locked targets. With this kind of scheme, it might even be possible to get rid of the whole random nature and make it gradated instead: the better the jamming strength compared to sensor strength, the more information is lost and at the extreme end of the spectrum, you're just given a list of [unknown pilot] [unknown ship] and you have to rely on visual identification through your camera drones to pick your targets.
The main point is that it needs to be something different than GÇ£render all targeted modules uselessGÇ¥ because that's just too wide-ranging an effect. If the random nature can be removed as well, that would be a bonus. GÇ£If you're not willing to fight for what you have in GëívGëí you don't deserve it, and you will lose it.GÇ¥

Realistically, unless you're flying with a Command Proteus and an Information Warfare Mindlink, no you cannot.
With MAX skills, no heat and minus a Proteus or Info Mindlink, you're looking at just under 15 jam strength.
With MAX skills, overheat and minus the Proteus/Mindlink, you're looking at just over 16 jam strength.
Add a Proteus, or even an Eos if you're poor, and a Mindlink, now you're looking at 18 (no heat) or 21(w/ heat) for jam strength.
Realistically, in the neighborhood of 15 jam strength is the most you'll ever face from a Falcon pilot.

You hit the nail on the head. Losing ships is not a big deal, but losing ships while you don't even get to play but only watch is not fun.
Locking out the victim so they can no longer play but only watch is not the best mechanic in the world to begin with. Making it ridiculously easy to perma-lock makes a bad mechanic terrible. Add some crazy range to this terrible mod and you made a terrible mechanic the worse mechanic in video game history.
The fact that a single ship (not even necessarily a falcon, but even Griffins and Blackbirds.) can completely lock down multiple enemy ships indefinitely, at a range the victim can not possibly fight back is OP. ECCM is a total fail counter, besides gimping your fit they are terribly noneffective at what they do. The only counter to ECM is ECM of your own. That's bad balance when the only counter for a mod/drones is to use that mod/drones yourself.

Not the worst idea for a solution:
ECCM Burst - Breaks any current active (and working) ECM on your ship, maybe an "X" second immunity on top of that? Give it a reasonable cycle time , maybe 1/2 to the same of a standard ECM module. A good ECM pilot can counter by staggering or carefully applying each ECM module. You can still get perma jammed but it requires the ECM pilot to work for it. |

Ah, the "Appeal to Authority" logical fallacy.
It may be true. That doesn't make it less of a fallacy.
The real problem isn't whether or not a system in-game mimicks a real-life system. The real problem is whether or not a system in-game is balanced with other systems in-game. With regard to ECM, my opinion is "very nearly, but not quite."
I'm not so sure I'd "nerf" ECM. But if it's nerfed, I think it should be in such a way that gives other nearby ships (including friendlies) a smaller chance of being jammed than the target. That way one person isn't hopelessly jammed by a fleet. Hope would remain, because the fleet could inadvertantly jam their own tackle pilot! So i ask again why are people so butt hurt about it? ECM as it is now is quite OP in the way that it works. ships that do not have a bonus to ECM modules are sometimes able to permajam others and I've seen a case when 2 different people, 1 with a racial ECM and 1 with a multispec, were able to jam a dual ECCM fit logi battleship for a few cycles in a row.
Captain Robby wrote:It is easy to counter(:) use drones / FOF missiles / sensor damps and possibly some others(.) its not the best EW(.) its a good one(,) i admit that(,) but can be countered if you work around countering it. here's the problem with what you said: Drones - the way they work makes their behavior based on luck and maybe timing when you're going against an ECM ship.
FOF missiles*(not missile's, that means "missile is") work as you want them to only when it's just you and the other guy. these missiles would lock on to ANYTHING that is not the ship that launches them - that's what Friend -OR- Foe means.
Sensor Damps - yeah I wanna see you try activating sensor dampeners when you can't even lock on to a target to apply them on.
as for using the direct counter - it just fails. it's that simple. ECCM fails. |

Because ECM, as it currently is, is boring.
It's not overpowered. ECM is hardly something present in every single fight. Some fights against ECM you'll win and some fights you'll lose, pretty much dependant on the numbers involved, the skill of the pilots and the ships/ranges involved.
But most of those fights, at least the parts involving ECM, will be horribly boring. Either the jams hit and you and most of your friends will be sitting there doing nothing AKA boring. Or the jams don't hit and the jammer will be primaried and killed in short order, causing him to sit there doing nothing AKA boring.
ECM does not make fights more interesting. It either makes them less interesting for the victim if the jams succeed or it makes them less interesting for the jammer if they don't. |

its not actually because of falcon the system is broken, sure no one likes ecm effect on them however it does not effect everyone equally.
The main and biggest issue is that with the sliding scale of eccm strength and availability of utility mids on smaller ships, makes using ecm against other small ships VERY strong - where you actually need a BB, scorp, falcon to jam bc/bs
A td on any ship effects any other ship just the same way, in the same amounts, ecm chances increase vastly the lower the eccm value. http://img299.imageshack.us/img299/4375/mynewsig2.jpg |

Simple solution - allow to use ECM on carriers and all ships that are able to jump :) ONLY ! |

Because people are frustrated when they are hit with CC effects and substitutes (and being as slow paced as EVE combat is, its CC are loooong). It's so prominent that some game designers refrain from bringing any form of hard CC into their games just avoid some frustration induction that probably will be associated with their game (ohnoez). |

For all the complainers, I advice you to fly ECM ships and see how it performs. It's not as gamechanging as it seems & due to ECM's reputation, almost any NON-jammed ship will be charging for you, so you better get ready to flee the moment you enter the battlefield.
Lets say that in ajn optimal case, I manage to jam 4 at once (very unlikely, but assume I use racial & manage to jam one of each) I can be assured that next cycle, at least 1 perhaps even up to 3 (4 if unlucky) will break the ecm. If they're smart, they started moving towards me, (or getting ready to jump)
ECM boats are amongst the most fragile as wel, as they need to sacrifice alot of tank to be effective.
These days, I fly my Curse, more effective & less visible effect, meaning players don't charge after me so easely. |

Because it's easier to complain about it, than it is to change a favourite fitting.
ECCM - Midslot Sensor Backup Array - Lowslot
Shield Tank, Web, Point & MWD are all midslot - A higher priority is placed on all of these than eccm Armour Tank, DCU, Damage Mods are all lowslot - A higher priority is placed on all of these than eccm
The most frequent argument used is "Web, Prop & Point are all vital in PvP and you NEED all 3 to be effective" The other favourite argument is "You aren't garaunteed to run into an ECM boat, so a slot with ECCM fitted is a wasted slot the rest of the time"
EvE is an MMO. Bring friends, spread that Point/Web load amongst them. I have often seen "don't try to do everything with 1 fit, specialise" given as advice
Consider that advice returned.

I have to agree with the last few comments but only somewhat.
I had a dual ECCM fit Damnation and it couldn't be jammed but unless they put some kind of damage bonus on the Damnation for HML after the December patch I don't know if I will be able to put the run to a falcon either. I can get a HAMnation to over 30 km but that isn't even close to what a Falcon can Jam at. R.I.P. Vile Rat |

would you fit SDA on if they had no effect on your ECM? please stop with your weak arguments and just fit F.O.F missiles to your deimos and HTFU. |

Because people don't want to sacrifice raw offensive DPS for utility. This game is awash in over specialized ship fits built with a single purpose in mind. ECM requires them to drop some offensive capability on the possibility that they might encounter something that completely nullifies their DPS output. Rather than accept that and fit for more than one purpose they come here to whine about it.
I personally like the idea. Currently the only place you see unspecialized fits is in wormhole space where just about anything could happen. A lot of WH dwellers don't have unlimited station hangar space nearby and often engage in non-PvP to make money.
A similar despecializing would be a welcome change to me. It makes the game less predictable and PvP less of a Rock/Paper/Scissors game... |

I still don't quite understand why people want to-go fits you never go wrong with. EVE's "fitting freedom" is a bitter joke already. |

There are many posts on these forums regarding turrets innability to track .....
So I'm guessing TEs/TCs don't "work" either. |

Logically, then, CCP should make ECM more and more powerful until these people do learn to take countermeasures. Excellent! |
