Edited by: Lacrimae on 29/03/2011 07:59:18 I was tripped by some random Icelandic girl who apparently didn't like me being tall. However, it wasn't so much outright hostility I was experiencing in general, but it wasn't a party to celebrate EVE either after RoXoR left stage (though FM Belfast did quite well) - it seemed more like any other concert that just happened to have quite a few EVE players and the others just kind of tolerated us while they took over.
One thing I've realized that I missed the most is the lounge area of 2009 where the PvP tourney had been. That gave people a chance to sit down and talk and be social, as well as get away from the hustle for a bit.

For me all was quite fun for my first fanfest - I highly recommend repeating that open-mic "panel" next time(s)!
The boxing event showed a very extreme variant of a combination of deadly-serious and staged-goofiness - Blood-soaked face for charity - you don't have that on the "Who wants to be a millionaire - Celebrity" show; The two commenter were awesome with their witty lines :)
It was great to have a printed schedule, but I'd have preferred the start/end times to be aligned across all rooms. That way you can compare what is at the same time more easily.
Also: Coffee crawl ftw! -- We race. We die. There is no beauty anymore. |

I tend to agree with Lacrimae to be honest. Fanfest was awesome as always, but there were a few small things that were a bit meh.
I think the OP pretty much covers it perfectly.

I agree with Lac tbh, she has summed things up well.
One thing i really did miss from last time was the epic rear projection screen in the main presentation area, with the station ships moving about in massive size!... that was amazing. The stars this year were a bit meh.

Things which could be improved:
- Less NPCs at the final party! The amount of people let in made it suddenly feel like us geeks were on display and just kind of tolerated, instead of this being a party to celebrate the end of an awesome Fanfest. I miss the days of it being all about celebrating EVE and with EVE related things throughout the night, instead of the teenage tan-fest it turned into.
- Manned wardrobe wanted for final party! It took us 20min to find our stuff, spread over the floor and table behind the coat racks. Loads of people lost stuff. We also had to rescue a girl who was literally getting choked after one of the racks fell on her!
These two points. Although Icelandic women look ****ing great, it felt as if we were intruders. Also the fact that it was jam packed with hardly any seating.
Other than that, it was my best trips yet!
Then go to the f'ing gym ffs!!
Icelandic Women are smoking hot - pull ya finger out and you might get lucky next time.... thats now your goal big boy for next fanfest?

Unfortunately I couldn't make it to fanfest this year, but if the party was similar to that of 2009 I really don't see the problem.
Lots of pretty ladies in the same place, often doing the first move themselves. How could you ask for more?
One way to accomodate for those who don't feel like mixing with locals is maybe to have another large room (the Tranquility room?), possibly accessible only to attendees (not sure about that), with lots of seats and music at a very low volume so to allow normal conversation.
Just food for thought anyway, I am quite content with the party.

Firtly thank you CCP for a truly Epic three days
Food was definitely better.
RoXoR and FM Belfast we epic. Need more of them and Permaband. Booka Shade... meah.
Great selection of stuff on the program
Much better organised with the registration etc
Please try to run the PvP torny on time or at least publish a new schedule. My team missed most of Friday while waiting for our matches.
Where were the big screens playing eve videos at the party on Saturday? Need more spaceship p0rn next year please.
Also bring back music intros while people go into TQ. Walking in there for the big events last time you have prodigy and RATM playing.
What happened to the free shots during Pub Crawl with a Dev? We got one but last year I thought there was one per bar?
Finally FFS make sure you announce the date and let people book early next year. Dont wait until the last second to tell us your putting it back six months.

Fanfest was fantastic as usual, loved the Blue Lagoon (shame its such a short visit). I managed to get a sinus cold and lost my voice on registration day but I braved through and attended most of it.
A couple of things I think were a bit strange or could do with a bit of improvement:
- The Goldern Circle Tour with the Devs, was missing the Devs (or they were bloody well hidden in the coach)
- The talks seemed shorter and didnt 'reveal' that much. I was expecting a huge chunk on Incarna but it was a 20min talk that was later 90% repeated in key note/CCP presents.
- Vuks lack of presence on the CSM stuff. Yes alright he rage-quit but not even a 'thank you' for his work over the years came across to me as a bit of a sad attempt to avoid the issue.
I'd love to see the next Fanfest in a bigger venue, I think we are starting to stretch the limits, especially in Sisi and Multi rooms. I would also like to see the old Icelandair booking system that lets me pick exactly what days I want to fly in/out this 5/6/7 day option really screwed up the ability to do a flight from Manchester AND do the goldern circle

No Guristas Lighter was the first problem. Then selling out of things on 2nd day and no restocking make it worse.
Janks is sure it looked great on paper "WE SOLD OUT OF STUFF" but there is the flipside, a lot of money lost by simply doing a poor job stocking it.

Edited by: Halaxi on 29/03/2011 23:31:03 Edited by: Halaxi on 29/03/2011 23:30:39 On the whole, it was a pretty good FanFest, CCP staff were cool and definatly willing and able to mingle with the players and talk EvE, or just have some random banter.
Presentations were good, and although they may not have been stocked with OMG levels of cool 'coming soon' stuff (suprise of suprises, asking CCP to focus on polishing/fixing/debuging existing content leads to not as much new stuff), the new stuff they had was very nice. I'm sure there were some squeals
Some minor issues however, mostly due to organisation:
* some roundtables either did not have a ccp person there, or were not managed properly so that whatever good ideas could have come up were just swallowed by the usual moaning (large scale combat round table being a prime example of the latter - please make sure whoever is chairing the tables is actually able to do that task, or indeed turns up)
* cloakroom and lobby area: sweet baby jesus, would it have hurt to turn the lights up a litte? Also, could have done with say an extra rack (stop laughing!) for folks coats and such.
* Party at the top of the world: was fun as usual, however a couple extra bins would have made the staff and party goers lives a little easier. Music was good, but more variety would have made it awesome. Inviting the locals...okay, looking at it objectivly I get that it's a good business idea (more sales, greater exposure, etc), but there really should have been more bouncers, as there just wasn't enough for that number of people. I personally didn't get any bother with the locals, but I saw plenty of them acting like ******ed drunken ****heads, and heard/saw others having issues, all of which could have been solved with more of a security presence. I also perfectly understand the sentiment expressed by many player attendees: letting the non-players in kind of removed or diluted the whole 'EvE Festival' aspect for me.
* smoking area: next time, put it on the other side of the entrence, so that those of us who do not partake of the cancer sticks can get in without having to run the nicotene gauntlet.
Hal.
edit: some of those issues, particularly party-wise, I'm sure were out of ccp's hands as they were most likely handled by the convention centre - hopefully feedback will be heading their way too.

First the bad..
The Round table locations.. A hallway? Come on. What is this? Grade 2?
Air conditioning. Is there a law that says you can't have the AC on in the winter? The round table rooms were VERY hot and stuffy after you packed people in them. If CCP knew ahead of time how many folks were coming, they should have had a good idea of how many people were going to be there. Most of us walked around the whole event with our coats. Open some doors. Turn the AC on. I know I'm Canadian, but damn.. Even the folks from the equator were complaining about the temps.
Smokers, outside the entrance. Seriously. WTF.
EVE Store. Half the products weren't there. And having prices in ISK instead of in USD like normal? I did the conversion to Canadian, and almost everything was MORE expensive at Fanfest then it would have been with the conversion via the EVE store. I WAS going to buy a set of the ship models, but they would have been almost 20% more and that was even including what it would have cost me to ship them home from the Online EVE store.
And WTF was with the Tax exempt receipts? I didn't learn about these until my last day in Iceland when my wife bought **** from the local mall. I could have gotten 15% of the taxes BACK if I'd been given the right receipt. This cost me almost 75$. CCP, WTF. I mean, I know a FEW of the attendee's were from Iceland, but come on. Err on the side of caution. EVERY person buying something from the store at Fanfest should have gotten a Tax Exempt Receipt. EVERY store she shopped at at the local mall AUTOMATICALLY gave her these receipts when they realized she didn't speak Icelandic.
Why couldn't I buy cases of Quafe? I know it woulda been a ***** to haul around, but STILL.
Event Schedule. Apparently this was better then the year before, and if so, then DAMN... Why would you have ANYTHING planed opposite the keynotes, and CCP presents and so on. Several times I had to choose between events pertaining to PVP. Large Scale PVP at the same time as Incursions? Worm hole space at the same time as the opening Ceremonies.... and so on.
I understand you guys "party hard" so couldn't get up and going before noon, but I didn't expect to miss half the events due to scheduling? Maybe next year you should NOT have 6 separate events going on at once. Maybe cut it down to 3 smaller ones at a time, and keep the BIG stuff so they're on their own. If we have to stretch fanfest out to a week, it probably wouldn't be a BAD thing. Hell, I'd be VERY happy.
Food... the selection was good. The Pizza sucked. It was old. Cold. And Stale, and WAY too damned expensive. When I can buy a large pizza not 500meters from the convention center, for the price of 2 slices, it's just a money grab.
And I know the devs have to keep tight lipped on things, but answers more then "Can't do that for XXX" "Hmm, Nice idea." "want to, but..." I'd have liked to hear more "That's what we thought, and it's coming ...."
And the partner plugs. Folks have went on about it. I'm glad you guys are partnered with nVidia and IBM and everyone else, but keep that stuff to the Sponsor showcase. That's what it's FOR. The info from them was good, but keep it all on one area.
VOLUME... The Presentations were either too loud, or too quiet. Round tables too quiet, anything in the larger rooms too loud.
"Party on the top of the world!" I'm partially deaf in one ear, and it was STILL way too loud. I LIKE loud music. I LIKE chest thumping base. but when I can't talk to my wife who's in my arms and my lips are 2 inches from her ear, it's too loud. Seating.. OMG who ate the chairs. There was no seating in the event. Price of alcohol.. I know you guys import most of it, but WTF. 1000 Kronar per drink? 500 for a soft drink? I know most folks who play eve will like Trance/Techno, but not for a whole night.
Now the good.
The atmosphere was very cool. The whole gallente them was cool.
The setup of 3 screens in Tranquility room was nice.
outta room.

The atmosphere was very cool. The whole gallente theme was cool.
The setup of 3 screens in Tranquility room was nice.
Every dev/CCP employee I dealt with was cheerful and upbeat and enjoyable to be around.
I like that you guys are an irreverent company, and the videos are cool and all, but remember. EVE players. Short attention span. If it takes more then 30 seconds to get into something.. oohh shiney... a you tube video about a monster truck doing a back flip...
Golden Circle and SOE. Wife was VERY happy about these. Great deals. Needed more though...Fan fest, 3 days after all.
SAW LOTS of CCP employee's around. At my hotel(The Grand) on the Golden Circle tour, at the event itself, at the after party.. Nice to see CCPers mixing with us common folk.

Agree on most part with the positive feedback. Nothing to add here except that I learnt from personal experience from fanfest 2009 not to be drunk as a skunk the first day.
The negative parts: - The long queues in eve shop. Was told to come back on several occasions for my tax receipt. When I got back on last day the queues were gone but they closed up shops really early. Only 3000ISK lost on taxes I couldnt get back but still stank to be turned away in door at 14.30 on saturday after having been told to come back several times.
- The music was way too loud. The base wasn't nice and hade a nasty screetch to it. Seriously, whoever was the sound technician should be put on public ridicule.
- The drug dealer that scoured around FF at the big party. I'm well of how different peoples opinion are different on the morality of the use or not use of drugs and won't go into that discussion. But getting asked if I want "coke", "weed", "extacy" wasn't that much entertaining. The drug dealer was pretty small and skimpy, his "goon" friend was a little bigger.
Did however enjoy trolling him and tell him he should be more careful of who he asks about getting to sell drugs. (Showed him my work ID which is to say.. very "official like"). The guy panicked and explained he was only doing it to survive in this harsh icelandic economy.. then skimpered off into the crowd of people to find someone else to sell to.
- Security guards that didnt let people with fanfest tickets in at around 00.00 GMT sucked big time. They let too many "random" scrubs in which made it impossible for some real attendees to be allowed in.
- No beer tickets for the normal people? wtf! Oh well at least we got the authenticator thingy instead.
Can't think of much more.

Lac's summed up my feelings on it pretty well, not much more to add, personally.
I will say the "Women in EVE" round table was pretty meh. It's a tired subject and all those questions have been asked before; it didn't help then and it wasn't particularly enlightening now. If you want to get more than just the same old answers, you're going to have to set aside more than one hour and get someone to moderate it properly.

NO! just no.
I honestly didn't go this year because I didn't have the iskies, but it was the same last year and was my favorite part in the entirety of Fanfest... what's not to love? Fellow EVE players to party with, Icelandic locals to mingle with, and more or less hot girls.
I plan on going again some year when I can afford it, but if they make the ending party exclusive to fanfest attendees I'll be sorely disappointed.

What disturbed me most was this "scripted" feeling to all the events... such as when Zulu wanted people to shout "**** yeah" three times... I think that tradition started when Hilmar gave us the new graphics engine (trinity) and people spontaneously broke out in cheers and "**** yeahs". But if you need your (dismal) marketing scrub to force this kind of response from the crowd then it just becomes cheap, hollow and frankly a bit sickening.
That kind of crap might impress 15 year old wow players... most of the eve players I talked to... well, not so much.
If you want euphoric cheering then maybe give us something that's worthy of cheers?

I'm not saying to not let anyone else in; I'm saying to cut down the number of them, as they literally took over, caused problems, diluted the "EVE" feeling and so many people were let in that FF attendees had trouble getting back in after going outside for some fresh air.

while i thought in general the fangfest was awesome, some of the 'round tables' were kind of pointless.
The 'what makes good people bad players' table was awkward and felt like an attempt for this university guy to sell us his book about research he did in 2009. The funniest part of that table was when he opened up for questions was from somebosy asking "Werent you supposed to interview me?", cue more awkwardness.
The t1 frigate round table was just some dude from Battleclinic giving us stats about ship losses posted on their website and felt like a waste of time. I'm sure i think a guy from veto just up and left after having a good question of his kinda of ignored and also because there was nothing of merit being talked about.
I also heard that there was no DEV to head the discussion at the Faction Warfare round table because that person got double booked. I kind of laughed at that because it sums up their (percieved) attitude to FW.
Maybe the whole point of these tables was to let the subscribers feel involved with the game without really changing anything, or even just filler for the fanfest itself.
That said, the main events presented in the big hall were great. I GOT SCAMMED BY DEVS ON THE PUBCRAWL where was the hßkarl? |

Have to agree with all of the sentiment from Lacrimae; my biggest problem with the party was that the vast number of non-Eve players turned the whole thing from a party with other Eve players to a party it felt like we were barely tolerated at. I spent most of the time outside the main room, up in the cafeteria area, just talking to people, because that's what I come to FanFest for -- not to squeeze myself into a room with 2000 kids that think I'm a freak for playing computer games. I can understand why CCP wants to throw a party where they can bring in some of the locals, and I admit that it would be nice if FanFest wasn't such a sausage fest, but I'd rather hang out with 1000 guys and put up with some clumsy but good-natured advances than the kind of palpable disdain that I felt from a lot of the outsiders.
Honestly, I'd be happy if there was an alternate party for Eve players where we could just hang out and talk with some drinks and without overpoweringly loud music. That's really what I go to FanFest for more than anything. -- CAPT Svetlana Scarlet Caldari Independent Navy Reserve

I said to someone they should open another door and just let EVE players back in that way and the NPC's can come in another door. No idea if they listened to me or just common sense hit them in the face but at one point there was another door EVE'rs could come back inside so it was much less of an issue.

Fanfest awesome. All was good, great people most of all. Lots to do, food was o...k... Party was dire, hot boys and girls yes, but did they give a hoot about us ...no... Many of us had our coats stolen and I got kicked by some local big meat head for no reason..erf Solution to party, tickets. At one point, a friend and I couldn't actually see any eve people dancing, all locals, who obviously thought we were nothing but a a bunch of geeks!
