Server downtime is really destroying my experience with Eve. It currently occupies over half of the time that I have available to play.

Firstly, during Beta the server downtime was at a differnt time of day. Had I known that the downtime was going to move smack bang into the middle of my "prime time" after launch I would probably have never bought the game.

Secondly the server downtime is usually at least an hour and a half, I have never seen it take only an hour as advertised and I don't know why they persist with this blatant lie.

Then to add insult to injury they have these extra extended downtimes which usually mean I can't log in at all for that entire evening.

I usually get home from work at about 7:30pm (9:30GMT), after cooking and eating dinner I am usually ready to start playing at about 8:30pm (10:30GMT) but due to the nature of Eve it is pretty much impossible to get anything worthwhile done inside half an hour so it's not worth logging in.

So I wait till after downtime which is usually around 10:30pm (12:30GMT) then I get to play for about an hour and a half before I have to go to bed so I can get up at 6:30AM to go to work.

So that means that during the 3&1/2 hours when I can play Eve (10:30->2:00GMT) I get to play for 1&1/2 hours and only cos I am burning the midnight oil to do so. In fact last week I was so tired and fed up that I didn't play for a whole week cos I needed to sleep.

I wish they would reduce or eliminate the need for downtime, I have never heard of a MMORPG that requires over an hour of downtime every single day.

At the very least they could rotate the time of day that it is done so that it's not just one group of players who are constantly affected by it.

Lovly addict :-).

The extended server downtime gave me the opportunity to buy:

- 2 bins of mineral water,
- pound of cherries,
- chives,
- eggs,
- 1/4 water melon,
- 5 x 20 kg cat litter,
- 96 cans of cat food.

Which means I can roughly play 3 months in a row now. Cats got to eat and I am using liquid fertiliser.

Got work CCP. You saved my day! And now no downtimes for the next 3 months please.

Scnr.

Looks to me like you're in the same timezone as I am. And I agree, the dowtime is highly annoying. But, in my experience it's rarely longer than 1 hour 15 minutes,a nd I've experienced a number of times where it was an hour, even a few where it was less than an hour. Get yourself the eve status program that resides in your systray, available from EVE-I.com. It can give and audible warning as to when the server has come back online, giving you a better chance of getting more time in the game. You'll find that in most cases the server is back up ontime, and CCP generally give a warning of extended downtime.

Well fact is you can't satisfie everyone... if you set downtime to 15:00 or 16:00 other ppl will cry.

Fact is that 11:00 is right in the middle of working day in iceland and therefore the right time for maintenence since it has to be done at some time. And it seems as if staff has to be around the servers.

I don't expect them to put it right in the middle of US or EU prime time and I appreciate that they would want to do it during CCP office hours. But at the very least they could vary it from between 10:00GMT to 16:00GMT so that I could have a downtime free night sometimes.

ôScheduled downtime for Tranquility is 11:00 û 12:00 GMT each dayö

Eve has now, by my reckoning, been running 56 days (8 weeks). Could someone please tell me on how many of those 56 days you were able to log back into game at 12:00 GMT and start playing? And by playing I do mean being able to log into your char and not wait 497 seconds for start-up. Obviously aside from days like today when there are issues to be resolved. Once? Twice? Ever? Please CCP, donÆt state something you categorically cannot abide by. Rather put: ôScheduled downtime is from 11:00 GMT till we get back from the pub sometime after noon.ö (IÆll settle for ô11:00 GMT till some time after noon.ö) Its called ôbeing honest with your paying customers.ö

Extended downtime 1st July 10:00-13:30 GMT
We had to extend the downtime more than anticipated. This was in part because more time was spent on taking backups of all persistent data, both to eliminate all chance of data loss during the database maintenance and in preparation to move a new backup to the Test server as part of patch preparations.
...

Well, darn. Are we running out of things to complain about? You must be one of those people who whines about having to stand in line at the grocery store.

If you have ever worked in a corporate environment, you would know that nothing is ever done when it is supposed to be and complaining about only makes things take longer.

My advice to everyone is that if they don't want to put up with it, to just move on to a nice single player game and quit complaining. Running a huge game like this is very complicated and even with the best team things go wrong, slip through the *****s and take time to fix. It is a fact of life and that is just the way it is.

Complaining about it will not change one thing.

My 2 cents

Down time is something that must occur to maintain this type of a game. I think we all have become spoiled with the past games, and that multiple servers have been available to log into incase our main playing server went down. Factor in that past games have also had servers in different regions, allowing for more regionally suitable downtimes. Eve however is different. There is main server "Tranquility", which in its self is a network of about 55 servers. The servers are based out of London, despite CCP being located in Iceland. When this server cluster goes down, everyone goes down.

1100 GMT is actually the best time to bring the servers down, since the majority of the player base (North America and Europe) is not online at the moment (or even awake in my case).

The problem that most people face is that they live in a time zone that just happens to have the downtime right in the middle of their main playing time. This is unfortunate however it is unavoidable. With a game that is played globally, someone will always get screwed on the time zone issue of the down time. With better equipment downtime could be reduced to near nothing (99.99999% availability) however that would come out of the money that CCP does not have.

The only resolution is to suck it up and bear it. Or quità your choice. Personally I donÆt care if you quit, that just leaves more Arknor for me =)

Dobby I am assuming that half of all of your Eve game time is not spent waiting for server up otherwise I am sure you would be a little more sympathetic.

Leaving Eve for greener pastures is something that has crossed my mind but it's something I really don't want to do. I REALLY WANT to play Eve.

But I am increasingly finding it hard to justify spending $20-25AUD (almost as much as I spend on my net connection) per month when the server is always down when I want to play.

But this is not an "I'm going to quit" post, I'm just really frustrated. As I said before, had I known about this before release I would probably have never bought the game.

Its a simple case of numbers, the servers go offline at what is typically the time when the least players are online. Sure it will affect people in certain time zones but these happen to be the minority in the game so ccp wont change things to please you while upsetting the majority of their playerbase. I know it sucks, but bear with it.. Im almost 99% sure there was a mention during the beta that downtimes will eventually be done away with if possable.

The idea that a game like this needs to have down time is a bunch of BS. I have played most other mmorpgs out there and most do not have down time every single day. You have down time every single day in this game due to ccp's inability to program a precentence state and dynamic world. They have to reset the server every day to refresh the supply and demand for trade goods. I find it very inadequate that in the 3+ years this game was in development that they couldn't program and random and continuos reseeding of trade good supply and demand.

Shadowstrike, as I said before I don't expect them to put downtime anywhere near the EU or US prime times but at the very least they could rotate it around a few hours before and after the current time slot to give at least a small amount of relief to us Aussies.

Having it rigidly occur at the same time every day is just a killer.

I'm sure after they get things running smoothly the downtime will go to once a week or once a month. They will eventually run out of things to do.

Your sneering remarks about CCP's coding abilities notwithstanding, Sunda, there are some advantages to making that programming choice. The devs' posts have already discussed the extent to which they're eliminating jobs from the downtime and moving them to dynamic state changes.

I would much rather see the current situation - where there are known tasks that need to be performed daily, but which are gradually being refactored to take place over the course of a game day, reducing the duration of daily downtime, and maybe one day eliminating it entirely. It's a better state of affairs than other MMORPGs that claim monthly uptime but suffer all-encompassing crashes, complete chat server failures, and 48-hour stints of unplayability at downtime (*cough*AC2*cough*).

Back to the topic though - I agree; varying the downtime through the day would be a good thing for Aussies and Kiwis, but on the other hand, having a known downtime date/time is good for planning production and research run times around RL garbage like going to work for people on EST, for example.

If you look at server stats, when they do do the update, the server stats are on the rise from the peek low point.
In other words the population hits it's lowest point about 1 hour before they shut down for maintanence and is already starting to get more people on it when they do shut down.

I agree with the principle, but I don't feel we currently have a known downtime.

It's known +/- a half hour or so on each end.

What I would like, in order of preference:
a) No downtime. No other MMOG has it. DAoC pulls off 1-month-plus uptimes.
b) Downtime moved randomly/rotated around a set of the least populated hours rather than picking one hour.
c) At least nailing down the beginning and end more accurately.

What I see as easiest for CCP to implement, in order from easiest to hardest:
b),c),a).

I see no reason not to implement option b) (Downtime rotation, with downtime schedules posted in advance, possible every Monday post the schedule for the coming week.) This way I could actually log on and start skill training before work most days, rather than having to ALWAYS start a superlong skill the night before. (I'm on the East Coast in the US - Downtime extends from 15-30 minutes before I wake up to 5 minutes after I absolutely have to leave for work.)

Aussies are still getting stuck with this crappy down-time. It wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't every day of the week. Evil or Very Mad

Considering eve is worldwide, you can't make every tz happy in that regard . It makes sense for them to do it when they are at work and not at silly o clock in the morning in iceland.
