This past week, I came across something that I wouldn't have expected in a lifetime: Generosity. I made an idle comment in my Corporation's chat about how much I would have loved flying in a Wolf Assault Ship. Knowing that I wouldn't have been able to afford one in the near future (lol poor noob), I just made it one of those, "Meh. If I get one, great; if I don't, oh well" toned messages.
Well, lo and behold, someone had sent me a contract - for free - for a Wolf sitting in a hangar just three jumps away. Along with an optimal T2 fitting. I was utterly speechless. I know it's not the greatest of ships that I could fly, but the entire reason I had come into EVE was the opportunity to fly a Wolf. I had lost three others, before, due to my own stupidity, but this was during a time when I had hardly any major skills trained other than the ones that were required for piloting a Wolf.
So, this really got me thinking: how generous would you be if someone asked for help? |

Edited by: Kiandoshia on 29/04/2011 11:29:47 I have given 100m+ to complete strangers before. A friend of mine got a CNR after he was kinda skint (I did get it back even though I didn't ask for it).
It's not that I am super rich myself and could give away faction ships whenever I feel like it, so I dunno what motivates me to do these things...
I'm probably too nice =P |

If someone asks for iskies, it¦s usually a scam, and i don¦t give anything.
When the situation matches, one can have 100m, who cares about 100m, it¦s peanuts. |

If they ask for help, not very. If I see they need help, quite.
I've given away hundreds of millions of ISK. But I've never given any to anyone that says "please give me ISK". |

I have been given 60 mill to get an Abaddon, loads of corpi armor, loads of help with missions and fittings advice, a fully kitted out Harbinger, sold loads of stuff at half price including a fully fitted Noctis, your level of ****headeness is directly in correlation to the help and free stuff you get without having to steal or scam for it...... |

I give stuff to my corp & corpmates all the time - billions and billions of ISK worth over the years.
Why?
Because when they are having fun, I am having fun. Simples.

I regularly bankroll new players with better ships. You often see people asking for help with missions in local. I help them out, and then I say "You shouldn't be trying to run that in an osprey, here use this". and give them a skill appropriate ship, often a battle-cruiser.
I've also been known to give out decent amounts of money, 10-15mil. Pocket change for me, weeks of work for a new player.
There are only two limits to my generosity. This first is I don't give to those who ask. Begging is pathetic, and not a form of behavior I wish to encourage. No shame in asking for assistance, this is a multiplayer game, but begging so you don't have to work with other people is bad.
The second is more of a request, but I always ask people who I donate to, to pass the favor on when they are making enough money to be in the same position as me.

depends on the situation but I usually try to help out corpmates that are new to the game - guess I would usually spend in the 30m range (ship + some basic implants) and draw the line around 60m.

Generosity is easy when you can easily afford it. For a newb 5 million is a lot, for older players it's nothing.

If they simply ask for a gift of ISK out of the blue, the likelihood of them seeing anything from me is quite low, even if they're otherwise good friends. If I see them struggling to obtain something, I might assist a little along the way, and eventually give them what they wanted (but didn't ask for from me) so they also get to keep everything else they worked for so far.

I can't remember how many ships I've given to corp/gangmates but its probably 30+. Usually its on a roam and they get popped - I have a ship nearby, they don't so I contract them it to get them back into gang fast. I never bother asking for iskies - what goes around comes around usually.
I can remember maybe 5-10 inties, about the same in Jags/Wolfs, 3 Cynabals and a Sleipnir. The rest is a vague blur

Its hard to be generous in this game because of all the scams. When I played SWG I gave credits and equipment all the time.

I am happy to be generous as long as it is the time of my choosing, begging makes me callous, so much so that if you were on fire, I'd pee my pants before helping.
That being said, I've given hundreds of millions of isk to new players and even returning players, when I saw a place I could help, and a place where I could assist someone getting more fun from the game. I believe in the spirit of MMO (you know playing with other humans) so if I can help that, I am glad to do so.

I rarely just give out stuff.
Even to friends, I usually ask something small in return.
For example, I would sell a fully fitted abaddon for 30 mil or a fully fitted drake for 10mil to a friend.
Not because I need the money, but I know this way, I don't feel like that they owe me anything, or the other way around.
It's just something psychological, but usually ends up better this way.

Like most of the people in this thread, I too don't give free stuff to anyone just asking for it, I just can't stand begging. It's like people running around with a sign saying "I never achieve anything". Some of the PVPers I fly with are just poor as ****, the good friend ones I often offer ships, simply because I rather pay a couple mil for a proper gang, than having us die in a fire because we flew useless ships. Other than that I know that those people won't trash the ships (k they will, but at least they're trying ).
Obviously the generosity has its end somewhere. A T2 frig, who cares. A BC, why not. A cynabal for really cool dudes. Not quite getting to giving away free Machariels yet.

Edited by: Lagruna Zegata on 29/04/2011 13:02:47 Long time ago...once went to EOH poker channel and I was shocked at how expensive the tournaments were to participate in. Out of the blue a null-sec alliance member sent me 28 million (minimum tournament buy-in). I won 22 million and sent him back the 28.
Once saw a new pliot named Belli'cose....so I contracted her (what else?) a free Bellicose cruiser!
I both give and receive and small goodies worth 10-50m with friends regularly.
EDIT - incorrect number

Running lv1s for one hour gives what? 1 mil? Running lv4s for one hour gives what? 20 mil?
Which one of these can you do while watching a movie?
I rest my case =)
(New players can't do lv4s so no matter how much they play and struggle, theres nothing much they can do about that fact. Lazyness has nothing to do with it. You have been brainwashed by the capitalist society to think that.)
