Originally by: Kara Sharalien I regularly bankroll new players with better ships. You often see people asking for help with missions in local. I help them out, and then I say "You shouldn't be trying to run that in an osprey, here use this". and give them a skill appropriate ship, often a battle-cruiser.
I've also been known to give out decent amounts of money, 10-15mil. Pocket change for me, weeks of work for a new player.
There are only two limits to my generosity. This first is I don't give to those who ask. Begging is pathetic, and not a form of behavior I wish to encourage. No shame in asking for assistance, this is a multiplayer game, but begging so you don't have to work with other people is bad.
The second is more of a request, but I always ask people who I donate to, to pass the favor on when they are making enough money to be in the same position as me.
You sound like we could be twins. I love helping out new players who obviously aren't begging but who are new and having a rough time of it. The way I see it, is maybe they will stay in the game and not give up on it when they see there are some helpful people around...
I remember one night in Caldari Provisions chat, some guy said "Crap I lost my Drake, I'm gonna start missioning for another". About 5 minutes later he said "Enough already no more Drakes please I got 3 now" lol...

I've given billions over the years, to both friends and strangers. Whether it be in items, modules, ships or ISK. I've never really had much desire in accumulating masses of wealth in Eve, just enough to play and have fun.

A while ago I logged into the w-system Im living in, and as the ship warped to the POS, I saw 2 ships nearby. Odd, I thought I had the POS set on kill. Anyway I talked to them and found that they had cleverly gotten themselves stuck. Also they were a party of 4, and 2 were at that moment off line. I scanned out the exit for them, found it was about to collapse, and most likely would before their friends logged back in. So I gave them a probe launcher and some probes. One of them went out, fitted it and came back in to wait for their friends.
Later I learned they all made it home.

I'm very generous when I get free stuff. I tend to do the best of my abilities to pay back what I can.
For example, SCOOTER1 gives me free basilisks for me and my alt, for dual rep. Generally they last for months before they die (mainly by stupidity). Also get free guardians from him too.
I pay back by flying those ships whenever he requested and keep gang alive, in addition when needed, provide my super Leadership skills with vulture, tengu, and claymore I funded on my own. :) Not only that, when I get free ships, they generally last/survive through many battles for some reason.

I also came across unexpected generosity.
In Feb I started a charity fund that would collect ISK and PLEXes to forward to CCP in case of some humanitarian emergency, in one of their PLEX for <XYZ> campaings.
Soon enough, the Japan earthquake happened and CCP started the PLEX for Japan campaign.
I have been given more than 91.6B worth of ISK, PLEX and deadspace fitted ships to turn over to CCP .
Who thinks EvE players are nasty selfish cavemen again?

Once our corp was looted by a corp thief.
2 days later about 4 people had donated 1.5 bil to replace the items stolen, there was 4-5 donators.
(2 donators gave half a bil each)

if someone asks for money in local or any chat channel, i offer to loan them a mining laser. if someone wants help on a mission, i'll help. if a new player wants to run some level 4 missions with me to get standings and cash, i'll gladly accept the assistance.
also a few months ago, a friend of mine gave me a Vindicator completly out of the blue after an offhand remark about how i should start saving for one as i recently saw how effective they could be.

A month or so ago I was in a chat asking for advice of some sort, got to talking to a dude in private and he was very helpful answering my questions. Anyway, we get to talking about skills and implants and he mentioned that you should really spend money and get into +3 implants asap as SP>ISK; and I said that would when I get the cash, will take a while though. He just gave me 20M so I could buy the ones I needed. Couple of weeks later when I had done loads of lvl 3s with a good agent I had the money to pay him back, and I did. Not sure he expected it or if he even remembered me but yeah.

Originally by: Kurama Bingyi This past week, I came across something that I wouldn't have expected in a lifetime: Generosity. I made an idle comment in my Corporation's chat about how much I would have loved flying in a Wolf Assault Ship. Knowing that I wouldn't have been able to afford one in the near future (lol poor noob), I just made it one of those, "Meh. If I get one, great; if I don't, oh well" toned messages.
Well, lo and behold, someone had sent me a contract - for free - for a Wolf sitting in a hangar just three jumps away. Along with an optimal T2 fitting. I was utterly speechless. I know it's not the greatest of ships that I could fly, but the entire reason I had come into EVE was the opportunity to fly a Wolf. I had lost three others, before, due to my own stupidity, but this was during a time when I had hardly any major skills trained other than the ones that were required for piloting a Wolf.
So, this really got me thinking: how generous would you be if someone asked for help?
What you encountered is the difference in perceived value between a new player and an older player. To an older player, giving away something like a wolf won't even make a dent in the wallet. While to a new player its worth multiple times the contents of their wallet.

Only to close friends. When new players ask for money I don't give them any. Why?
If you give a man a fish, he will eat for a day. If you teach a man how to fish he will eat for a lifetime.
I follow that belief. I will teach new players how to make the money rather than just give it to them. Even If I have to spend a few hours doing so. This guarantees that they will have some premise on how to make money and will keep playing.
Giving money to beggars only makes them ask for more. First it's 50k, then 100k pretty soon they are asking for millions. Because the money is not theirs they spend it quickly and without much thought. Eventually when they are out of cash and nobody gives them any money or enough money to meet their demands they give up and quit the game.

Does leaving a lvl 2 frigate outside of a noob station containing a full HG Snake set count as generosity?

some months ago i was hauling some t2 frig between hubs to make profit, and made a big mistake ; i wanted to switch hauler alt in space... and the ships got assembled. at this time i had no orca, and even if i could handle the loss, it was still a blow, on wallet, and mostly on my stupidity level.
after asking help on the noob channel, i was surprised someone came, from like 20 jumps away, put them on his orca, dropped them on a station of the system, and gave them back to me.
was thinking the whole time he would leave with the ships, laughting at me for days, but no, i had found a really nice guy this time.

I tend to be generous when the situation calls for it. Once in a while I head to Arnon to help newbies out with the SoE arc. I do prefer to give gameplay help more than financial. Much more fun that way. And I always give isk to those who beg... .01 isk each.
Being given stuff... I was able to play this month because someone randomly gave me a PLEX. Freaked me out a bit because I didn't ask for it either.

On topic: Giving generously as well as your means can support is an investment that over time always pays you back with generous interest in both Isk and Connections. "Every Pirate is a lost soul waiting to be shown the light"
